Welp, I'm neutral. While it makes sense, that can create petty conflicts between threads and groups.

Agreed, we also need a polling statistic thingy at the top of the thread that lets people register support/opposition/bleh without actually having to post.

If the meaning of a thumbs up is simply support for the topic, for the purpose of gaining the 5% rule, then does this suggest that:
1) The character based thumbs up/down enables people to post 3 times per account.
2) There is no need for a thumbs-down because a thread because no thumbs = no support to force the vote through.
3) A thumb up down mechanism on a OP isn't sufficient, as the OP will just the topic, but doesn't address all the pros and cons listed by people replying.
A more advanced (and useful to the CSM) would be support for the views expressed in the posts. So the addition of a thumbs/down option on each post, or a rating system on the thread for useful posts.

Serenity I think the mechanism for forcing a vote may need looking at - if a thumbs down option were available a certain percentage of thumbs up vs. thumbs down could be required, once the vote reaches a certain threshhold.
That said, I think this thread topic serves as a general "issue" on the nature of this thumbs up thing, and so I support it as something the CSM should address.
Procedural matters like these are things this inaugural CSM could get squared away to make the whole concept of the CSM more meaningful and powerful for the future.
