I hope these effects will be released on TQ otherwise CCP have actually managed to sink to SOE's level, which is bad.
They're not lying. It's called marketing. I'm not saying it's a awesome to do that sort of thing, but it's definitely not new to the industry. In my opinion, EVE doesn't NEED that kind of thing given how fracking gorgeous the engine is. If CCP is having a hard time taking pretty pictures they should let me know -- I've got zillions. :D
But winterblink your forgetting how CCP has commented more than once that they might put this feature back into the game :(
SO for everyone that ever heard them say they might put it back, were really confused because the hope is there.

I kinda wish CCP would just tell us if EA is getting the new effects or not, Instead of leaving us playing the speculation game.
That is all.

If its just a question of not releasing the hi-res textures because of performance issues, why not release an optional patch/texture pack so players (like me) with good enough hardware can enable hi-res textures and enjoy the shmexy gfx?.. and players with older pcs can use the default textures. I would have thought releasing the higher poly models mentioned by MotherMoon as an optional patch would be less of a possibility than the textures but if not, same argument as above applies.
CCP, if you've paid your artists and they've spent the time producing hi-res textures, why keep them(the textures not the artists) locked away only to come out for trailers?

If ships don't break apart in the expansion I will be extremely ****ed. Putting shots like that into 'Screenshots' if they don't really exist is akin to straight up dishonesty.

Edited by: Saiutt on 02/06/2008 23:02:37 Yer.. its only noticable really in the larger image. Also, is it just me or does the station look like its been 'shopped aswell? Its most obvious on the top left dome shaped bit.. Surely thats more than just AA? Its got a thin black line around the edge. I would go so far as to suggest its not even rendered by any version of the trinity engine. It looks like an artists drawing thats been plonked on top of the image. http://www.eve-online.com/empyreanage/assets/screenshots/07_large.jpg

i figured i'd reply to this thread as i feel its a pretty hot topic and definately should be discussed more.... still no official word from the Devs eh?
lol @ winterblink with the burger..... so true! :)
as for the main topic... well... i feel its pretty simple really CCP should absolutely never say "actual gameplay" or "actual ingame footage" if its not. These screenshots ARE ingame footage, the trailers ARE taken from ingame footage but as been stated before, not "our" version that we play. Which "could" be miss-leading to someone whos never even looked at eve-online before.
its kinda bork of CCP to release screenshots thats quite clearly the DX10 version of EVE. You can force the premium graphics to use AA with some tweaking and software but defiantely doesn't look ANYTHING as good or high res'd textures as the screenshots/trailers are. Its called marketing, but they are from the game, just not our current version of trinity, yet.
Most likely several reasons for this which i'll list a couple i think could be reason. 1) CCP need the game to look its absolute BEST it can possibly be for advertising reasons, when your selling a product you REALLY wanna make it look the best product there is. 2) CCP are most likely waiting for the everyday gamer to catch up with technology, im personally am STILL running a BFG 7800GS A.G.P board. ACIENT!!! just as an example. NOT everyone has the top of the line machines to run eve like those screenshots, alas, not released the high res text and DX10 build for premium, yet.... 3) Ambulation.... this still isn't released yet... possibly a xmas release (we can all but hope) but if you remember from one of the very first times it was even mentioned about ambulation, you would only be able to have ambulation enabled if u hav DX10. This would co-inside a possible DX10 client of the premium graphics engine to boot. Which would make the most sense as its essentially a graphic expansion, it would include all things DX10, and of course, would be added to jus like FW will be added to down the road to expand it.
final anylisis.... the screenshots and trailers may NOT be in "our" current versions of FW/Trinity/Premium gfx client, the devs are using it, so its there! and alas 'taken from ingame footage'
thats my take on it all anyway..... and i seem to remember that a dev mentioned they use a diff client to the one we use for development purposes in an interview once.

well i think you'll find that their not... as i said it could come off as very miss-leading to someone who's never seen eve-online before and expect the game to look like those screenies....
but an offical word would be nice though, and those screenshots and wallpapers for FW, SWEEEEEEEET!!!! lol... does make it look awfully good

CCP uses a non-compressed texture pack (at the very least) for their screenshots. That's been admitted by a dev in the past. I've no idea if they have a dev-haxxed client as well, but it wouldn't surprise me. My system has all the available consumer bells and whistles forced on and my screenshots look worse than texture resolution alone should explain. Still looks great, it just doesn't look like the 'official' shots.
'In-game' should mean 'in-MY-game'. Except we're all so used to being jollied along, we don't protest when companies lie to us. At least CCP does it less than other companies.
Still, I doubt we'll see those enhanced backgrounds and effects for months (or longer). I'd love to be proven wrong though :)

There are very few new "renovations" features in this expansion, although work on that is continuing in the background. The issue is that it takes a lot of effort to release those, and that usually precludes doing a major release with other big features at the same time.
However, there *are* ship graveyards at sites that make sense in the backstory from the book, and those have been renovated (although you won't be seeing your own Naglfar splitting apart like that if you get blown up).
I'm not 100% sure if we're still using uncompressed textures for screenshots - The reason that it was done in Trinity was because they had to start making marketing material before all the work was finished, which included the work to decide on the best compression scheme. Most of the shots you see with the high res textures also lack shadows because of this, because the shadowing scheme relies on the ships being baked down to a final form.
I hope that answers most of your questions - I can't answer anything about planned release dates for more renovations work, because I don't know, and it's possibly still subject to change. The work is still going on to get the content ready regardless.

While the burger looks better then it does in real life everything shown in the picture is present when you purchase it, EVEs screen shots advertise features that are not present when you play eve hence CCP lies to its customers more then SOE does.
Touching up screen shots is fine, everyone does it and everyone knows everyone does it, adding stuff you wont see in the game means its no longer a screen shot, its becomes artwork/concept art/wallpaper. Screen shots are supposed to show people what the game looks like, not what developers want it to look like.

I'm sorry to say: No, you did not answer the questions that were asked here. I would like you to answer the following question for me:
If I go to the bank, withdraw 10k Ç, go buy the best gaming computer money can buy and then install the current version of EVE:EA on it and increase all graphics settings to the max, will I be able to get exactly the same screen shots as the ones that you claim are "taken from the game"?
a) No b) Yes
Btw. and I mean "exactly" the same... not "the models are the same but with totally different textures" (which may or may not be released sometime within the next five years...) I want to know if the screenshots you are selling us as "in game" are actually what I (as a paying customer) can get from your product in the form you deliver it to me in exchange for my money... or are these screenshots only some nice fantasy that some marketing dude got shopped?
Thats what I want an answer to. Thx.

You won't get "exactly" the same shots, no.
The guys doing the screenshots have tools to set up screenshots using game assets that do exist in the game client you install, in locations and situations that don't necessarily exist in the game itself, but this isn't that different to the situation you get with expensive Italian sports cars pictured in privately owned scenic locations you could never take one you bought to - the car however, exists as pictured.

Thanks for the response Mr. Redundancy! So that means the screenshots are products of marketing and to be taken as such... thats good to know (and not totally unexpected either). I'm glad that CCP admits to this fact (even if the homepage, screenshots and videos are still missleading to any newer players that don't know they are being shown "screenshots using game assets that do exist in the game client you install, in locations and situations that don't necessarily exist in the game itself").

Thanks to the reply. I really don't think it's such a big deal.
"We are being lied to" is a little over-dramatic.
The game looks fantastic, i wouldn't say the differences from those shots to actual are really all that much. Obviously those shots are going to be setup to form somewhat of a narrative.
The guy who posted the screen-shot highlighting things that are different is truly nitpicking.

Edited by: CCP Redundancy on 03/06/2008 11:45:50 I believe you can and do get comparable images from within the game world as it exists, so I don't believe that this is misleading. It would certainly be possible to be misleading if you were trying, but that's not what I believe we do, and I think you have an overly narrow view of what is and isn't representative of the graphical quality of the game that's portrayed in the screenshots (any screenshot without the UI clearly isn't selling representative gameplay).
I also notice that we specifically didn't preface the Empyrean Age trailers with a declaration that it was taken within the game engine (even if most of it was), which we do on most other videos because they haven't been touched up (with the station explosion, mainly). Even then, the trailers still aren't described as being representative of the gameplay, so much as the feel and vision of Eve.

Then this image is in no way a screenshot of the game which will be available in June 2008, as it shows a ship breaking apart while it explodes.

For me it would be fair enough if I could turn on AA & filters, that's the only thing that is screwing me graphics wise as at 'low'res (1280x1024) in a small screen (17 inch) it's ugly. And I've all maxed out.

You can turn AA on!!! If you have an Nvidia card go to the driver control panel and select: AA - Overide any application setting. Then put it to whatever you want 4x, 8x, 16x, etc. I never play EVE without AA....at least 4x. You can also use a program called Nhancer to force AA and all that good stuff on if you are having trouble with the driver ctrl panel.

You know CCP, you could have avoided this entire stupid thread simply by telling your dudes to use regular explosions and not show ships breaking apart. People buy games based on the ingame screen shots and if we can't shoot a ship and watch it break apart then that's not really a screen shot now is it.
In the future, we kindly ask you not get our friggin hopes up just so as to attract a few more players.
But, at least you know what we want now. Ships breaking apart! Please! "Popping" is dumb!
