Edited by: MotherMoon on 01/06/2008 07:22:06 Anyone remember when we were freaking out over the wallpapaers on the Factional warfare expansion site?
WEll it's ok! because now a real page of "screenshots" have been added, just to make sure new players joining eve will see what game play really looks like, not like those silly wallpapers with the ships failing apart and everything.
Linkage
I like this one, I remember those effects in game. EDIT (Actually minus the model breaking into three piece all of the effects in the screenshot are from in-game)

So, be honest with us CCP, is this a new feature planed for the future or what? your sure as hell advertising it.
If the trailer for EA comes out and has these effects, AND it's not planned at all to be put into the game some day I will dissapointed, as one of the cooest things about eve trailers has always been it's all real time graphics. Sure it's running with super AA and such, 10 times higher rez textures. But it's all game play if you see it, it can happen.
Well other than the nyx but that's a story line thing.
I'm talking about normal combat that these "screenshots" show. it's not advertising some event in eve, it's just a normal example of eve gameplay for incoming players.
So PLEASE CCP! Tell us what is up :(
What do you guys think? PR move? or are these examples of a future update? Because honestly, they look great.

Well if I remember right, after Trinity was released, CCP did make a statement say that improved effects were coming as well. I think I saw somewhere that they said the new effects wouldn't make it into this expansion, but will be coming afterwards.
This is just from my crappy memory, so hopefully someone can link something to shed some more light on it all.
They've said that Ambulation (Station Walking) was coming out in 2008, so I'm going to guess that's going to be in late fall / early winter. It's possible that the weapon effects stuff was delayed by the staff being needed to work on that project as well.
If you notice, Empyrean Age (aside from Rank graphics) is almost exclusively content stuff after Trinity's primarily graphic expansion. Perhaps they've got the content and art departments running 2 different expansion projects at the same time, with staggered releases? That would support my theory of a graphic-based expansion coming after Empyrean age that includes updated weapon effects and Ambulation. Discoverer of the Missile Damage Formula |

Edited by: MotherMoon on 01/06/2008 07:40:03 hmm well I know for a fact that CCP works on a system where there are multiple projects being worked on by multiple teams.
Each feature as I understand it is developed for 1 to 2 years before release.
By having 4 teams run starting at different times they can release an expansion every 6 months that has been in the works for the past 1 to 2 years.
What I'm worried about is the link shown to players on the Sci-Fi channel are showing these shots. So it gets my hopes up, but I don't think it's going to happen until later... but the screenshots!

Edited by: Frug on 01/06/2008 08:16:42 Yeah the first thing I thought when I saw those screenshots is that it looks dishonest because they're clearly doctored.
But now that you mention it, if it's a planned graphics update, then that's awesome. I just... have my doubts.

I don't understand the second to the last picture. Two tempests, a rifter and a bunch of hauler are heading for an Amarr station. Why did they bring the haulers? Are they loaded with fertilizer? The two apocs visible at the rhs are sure gonna have fun.

True, it doesn't seem that hard to do for guns.
Personally I don't they need to make missile turrets, just map missile turrets into the ships.
For instance the bellicose has visible missile launchers. The stabber does to.
The drake is another example.
For the rest of the ships just make a texture that opens up like a missile bay hidden in the ships and then fires a missile and then it closes again.

I made a thread about this right after the FW features page went live and got no Dev response. With the bulldog attitude they have been taking about correcting posts with the wrong information about FW and EA I think that maybe we will see this in the expansion.

you sir haven't been part of eve uni or other learning corp have you?
Almost every new player asks "So... can I go to war with the ammar? or whatever race happens to be what the story calls for.
However your missing the point of the whole thread, the point is the only feature ARE factional warfaree like you said.
and yet they are showing screenshots.
SO This thread is asking "WTF! is that ship breaking apart!?!"
and hopefully this thread will with the older thread about the wallpapaers, get CCP out of hiding.

IMO, 'shopped.
I remember seeing the screenshots for Trinity when that was released and it doesn't really look the same in game now.
The complete lack of AA probably has something to do with it, but its definately bad karma if they're showing fragmenting wrecks rather than an explosion, then a blob of metal scraps, and then it just turns out to be a blob of metal scraps in EA too.
I'll happily eat my Racoon tail cap if they deliver on the graphics however.

Edited by: Melor Rend on 02/06/2008 10:17:35 I noticed the same thing before the last release (when the graphics were updated). The so called "in game screen shots" had little to do with the actual game besides the models of the items being the same. I even made a thread about it after the release with comparison between the advertisements and the real thing and there are massive differences. Of course the quality of the graphics wasn't as good on my PC as on the screen shots but that wasn't all - there were for instance logos and writing on the screen shots that simply don't exist in game ... so thats a dead giveaway that the pictures were not made in EVE or at least not in the version of EVE that was then released.
I find it OK if CCP makes ads to attract new customers with "enchanced" screen shots but I find it wrong if CCP releases material that is supposedly "taken from the game" when it actually has nothing to do with the actual game besides the models.
The screen shot of the rifter for instance is clearly a fake or if not then it was massively edited and enchanced to make it look better then what we (the paying customers) actually get.
So basically I really don't like being lied to by some PR-guy... make two homepages: one with the fake screen shots to attract customers and a "real" page that you can only access with user & password that has actual game footage and not marketing rubish. Or otherwise put a fat red warning above the pictures that reads "these pictures may not be real EVE graphics".
Less PR-lying please.

I started a post like this in the old Emp. Age. thread when it was first announced and the site went live. The term commonly used for this kind of thing is "bullshot". :)
As for the ships looking better, well you'll notice they look pretty spanky in the trailers as w well (look back at the Trinity trailer too). CCP's stated (too lazy to find link) that they're using extremely high resolution textures which we do not have in the premium content (yet?) to make those. Presumably it's the same for the screenshots, and then edited to add some creative splashes here and there.
Is it 100% accurate to the game? Conceptually yes, visually not so much. But the concept is what's being marketed, the visuals already sell themselves.

Well as I remember from some dev posts around trinity. Every screenshot is taken from the game actually. But it is not from tranq client but CCP internal one with "all enabled". It features higher resolution textures some more effects that were removed for performance reasons and so on

Hence the screen shot is fake, taking the shot in a 3d modeling program or in a beefed up client that only devs have access to amounts to the same thing, CCP are lying to their current and potential customers.
I hope these effects will be released on TQ otherwise CCP have actually managed to sink to SOE's level, which is bad.

They're not lying. It's called marketing. I'm not saying it's a awesome to do that sort of thing, but it's definitely not new to the industry. In my opinion, EVE doesn't NEED that kind of thing given how fracking gorgeous the engine is. If CCP is having a hard time taking pretty pictures they should let me know -- I've got zillions. :D

If its just a question of not releasing the hi-res textures because of performance issues, why not release an optional patch/texture pack so players (like me) with good enough hardware can enable hi-res textures and enjoy the shmexy gfx?.. and players with older pcs can use the default textures. I would have thought releasing the higher poly models mentioned by MotherMoon as an optional patch would be less of a possibility than the textures but if not, same argument as above applies.
CCP, if you've paid your artists and they've spent the time producing hi-res textures, why keep them(the textures not the artists) locked away only to come out for trailers?

i figured i'd reply to this thread as i feel its a pretty hot topic and definately should be discussed more.... still no official word from the Devs eh?
lol @ winterblink with the burger..... so true! :)
as for the main topic... well... i feel its pretty simple really CCP should absolutely never say "actual gameplay" or "actual ingame footage" if its not. These screenshots ARE ingame footage, the trailers ARE taken from ingame footage but as been stated before, not "our" version that we play. Which "could" be miss-leading to someone whos never even looked at eve-online before.
its kinda bork of CCP to release screenshots thats quite clearly the DX10 version of EVE. You can force the premium graphics to use AA with some tweaking and software but defiantely doesn't look ANYTHING as good or high res'd textures as the screenshots/trailers are. Its called marketing, but they are from the game, just not our current version of trinity, yet.
Most likely several reasons for this which i'll list a couple i think could be reason. 1) CCP need the game to look its absolute BEST it can possibly be for advertising reasons, when your selling a product you REALLY wanna make it look the best product there is. 2) CCP are most likely waiting for the everyday gamer to catch up with technology, im personally am STILL running a BFG 7800GS A.G.P board. ACIENT!!! just as an example. NOT everyone has the top of the line machines to run eve like those screenshots, alas, not released the high res text and DX10 build for premium, yet.... 3) Ambulation.... this still isn't released yet... possibly a xmas release (we can all but hope) but if you remember from one of the very first times it was even mentioned about ambulation, you would only be able to have ambulation enabled if u hav DX10. This would co-inside a possible DX10 client of the premium graphics engine to boot. Which would make the most sense as its essentially a graphic expansion, it would include all things DX10, and of course, would be added to jus like FW will be added to down the road to expand it.
final anylisis.... the screenshots and trailers may NOT be in "our" current versions of FW/Trinity/Premium gfx client, the devs are using it, so its there! and alas 'taken from ingame footage'
thats my take on it all anyway..... and i seem to remember that a dev mentioned they use a diff client to the one we use for development purposes in an interview once.

CCP uses a non-compressed texture pack (at the very least) for their screenshots. That's been admitted by a dev in the past. I've no idea if they have a dev-haxxed client as well, but it wouldn't surprise me. My system has all the available consumer bells and whistles forced on and my screenshots look worse than texture resolution alone should explain. Still looks great, it just doesn't look like the 'official' shots.
'In-game' should mean 'in-MY-game'. Except we're all so used to being jollied along, we don't protest when companies lie to us. At least CCP does it less than other companies.
Still, I doubt we'll see those enhanced backgrounds and effects for months (or longer). I'd love to be proven wrong though :)

There are very few new "renovations" features in this expansion, although work on that is continuing in the background. The issue is that it takes a lot of effort to release those, and that usually precludes doing a major release with other big features at the same time.
However, there *are* ship graveyards at sites that make sense in the backstory from the book, and those have been renovated (although you won't be seeing your own Naglfar splitting apart like that if you get blown up).
I'm not 100% sure if we're still using uncompressed textures for screenshots - The reason that it was done in Trinity was because they had to start making marketing material before all the work was finished, which included the work to decide on the best compression scheme. Most of the shots you see with the high res textures also lack shadows because of this, because the shadowing scheme relies on the ships being baked down to a final form.
I hope that answers most of your questions - I can't answer anything about planned release dates for more renovations work, because I don't know, and it's possibly still subject to change. The work is still going on to get the content ready regardless.

While the burger looks better then it does in real life everything shown in the picture is present when you purchase it, EVEs screen shots advertise features that are not present when you play eve hence CCP lies to its customers more then SOE does.
Touching up screen shots is fine, everyone does it and everyone knows everyone does it, adding stuff you wont see in the game means its no longer a screen shot, its becomes artwork/concept art/wallpaper. Screen shots are supposed to show people what the game looks like, not what developers want it to look like.

I hope that answers most of your questions
I'm sorry to say: No, you did not answer the questions that were asked here. I would like you to answer the following question for me:
If I go to the bank, withdraw 10k Ç, go buy the best gaming computer money can buy and then install the current version of EVE:EA on it and increase all graphics settings to the max, will I be able to get exactly the same screen shots as the ones that you claim are "taken from the game"?
a) No b) Yes
Btw. and I mean "exactly" the same... not "the models are the same but with totally different textures" (which may or may not be released sometime within the next five years...) I want to know if the screenshots you are selling us as "in game" are actually what I (as a paying customer) can get from your product in the form you deliver it to me in exchange for my money... or are these screenshots only some nice fantasy that some marketing dude got shopped?
Thats what I want an answer to. Thx.

You won't get "exactly" the same shots, no.
The guys doing the screenshots have tools to set up screenshots using game assets that do exist in the game client you install, in locations and situations that don't necessarily exist in the game itself, but this isn't that different to the situation you get with expensive Italian sports cars pictured in privately owned scenic locations you could never take one you bought to - the car however, exists as pictured.

Thanks for the response Mr. Redundancy! So that means the screenshots are products of marketing and to be taken as such... thats good to know (and not totally unexpected either). I'm glad that CCP admits to this fact (even if the homepage, screenshots and videos are still missleading to any newer players that don't know they are being shown "screenshots using game assets that do exist in the game client you install, in locations and situations that don't necessarily exist in the game itself").

Thanks to the reply. I really don't think it's such a big deal.
"We are being lied to" is a little over-dramatic.
The game looks fantastic, i wouldn't say the differences from those shots to actual are really all that much. Obviously those shots are going to be setup to form somewhat of a narrative.
The guy who posted the screen-shot highlighting things that are different is truly nitpicking.

Edited by: CCP Redundancy on 03/06/2008 11:45:50 I believe you can and do get comparable images from within the game world as it exists, so I don't believe that this is misleading. It would certainly be possible to be misleading if you were trying, but that's not what I believe we do, and I think you have an overly narrow view of what is and isn't representative of the graphical quality of the game that's portrayed in the screenshots (any screenshot without the UI clearly isn't selling representative gameplay).
I also notice that we specifically didn't preface the Empyrean Age trailers with a declaration that it was taken within the game engine (even if most of it was), which we do on most other videos because they haven't been touched up (with the station explosion, mainly). Even then, the trailers still aren't described as being representative of the gameplay, so much as the feel and vision of Eve.

Then this image is in no way a screenshot of the game which will be available in June 2008, as it shows a ship breaking apart while it explodes.

For me it would be fair enough if I could turn on AA & filters, that's the only thing that is screwing me graphics wise as at 'low'res (1280x1024) in a small screen (17 inch) it's ugly. And I've all maxed out.

You can turn AA on!!! If you have an Nvidia card go to the driver control panel and select: AA - Overide any application setting. Then put it to whatever you want 4x, 8x, 16x, etc. I never play EVE without AA....at least 4x. You can also use a program called Nhancer to force AA and all that good stuff on if you are having trouble with the driver ctrl panel.

You know CCP, you could have avoided this entire stupid thread simply by telling your dudes to use regular explosions and not show ships breaking apart. People buy games based on the ingame screen shots and if we can't shoot a ship and watch it break apart then that's not really a screen shot now is it.
In the future, we kindly ask you not get our friggin hopes up just so as to attract a few more players.
But, at least you know what we want now. Ships breaking apart! Please! "Popping" is dumb!

That was all I wanted to hear honestly. It's good to know that they might not be real shots (duh I know you can set them up) But it's great to know that at least those wrecks in the screentshots will be in the game floating around!
I still wish you'd remodel the asteroids but that's another thread and another story :P
And Also understand, this thread wasn't about the trailers, those didn't show anything we couldn't see in game I understand that. And trust me I understand that your not using you DX10 models, I have the art book and OMG I can't wait until you do :P
So thanks for the reply, I'll add your reply to the op and we can "hopefully" let this thread end as your answered our *my* question.

I'm ATI unfortunatlly, have tried several ways and it's impossible. On topic... CCP tactics are not fun at all, as these are not screenshoots taken from the current in game graphics (the ones EVERYONE can use I mean), please don't seel them as such. Post them as wallpapers or whatever, but not as screenshoots.

Trust me I know, I've seen some eve vids (playermade) that look just as good as any trailer you make. I think the issue was the way they move or the way they "explode"
I mean I know you never said "taken form gameplay" it's just... the word "screenshot" is misleading not the pictures them selfs.

Hi everyone, it's about time I replied to one of these threads. Just a short introduction, I'm SessionChange and I'm the screenshot artist here at CCP.
As Redundancy has said, we have tools here which we use to set up scenes. We can take screenshots at many times the resolution of the screen and use these screenshots for marketing purposes. As someone stated above, textures alone are not enough to explain the quality of the screenshots, it is the fact that the screenshot is taken at roughly 8000 x 5000 resolution and then reduced in size that gives the impression that we are using uber anti-aliasing when in fact we are not.
As far as the scenarios are concerned and which Redundancy did not cover, specifically the shots of ships blowing up in ways hitherbefore unseen, I'll address those concerns now. There are new assets ingame coming in "Empyrean Age" and, as far as I am aware, these include but are not limited to the wrecks shown in our screenshots. The screenshots admittedly hint at things that are not available to players ingame; yes they will be able to see wrecks ingame that look exactly like the ones in our screenshots, but these wrecks will not appear when your ship explodes, they're static wrecks which are not destructable and used for the graveyards.
Now, this does not mean that someone cannot replicate our screenshots in-game when the patch is released as you will still be able to fire missiles at them and it will appear as though the ship is breaking up.
I hope this settles this thread and answers any questions that remained.
Thanks

Yeah, at least in the US, and it'll get your ass fined by the Federal Trade Commission (and they don't take payment in deep fried puffins, you puffin murdering bastards).
Before "lol Iceland," CCP's an American company now, too, with that office in Georgia (I think--I get CCP and Adult Swim confused sometimes). They really should hire an American lawyer at some point.
Ex-player friend (lost one too many suicide kestrels and is all bitter and </3 at CCP) emailed me about the television commercial and was all "omg law suit." My exhortations to him to post "WTB: LIFE" in whatever game he's playing aside, he kinda has a point, albeit not about the commercial (I don't think they claimed that was in-game footage, did they?). --

Thanks for the reply, but things are still far from clear.
The 'wreck' in the screenshot still has it's engines on, exactly the same as the non-wreck in the background, so the Rifter is not merely shooting at a graveyard wreck.

Yes, maybe some Rifters are flying past an old wreck, which still has its engines running and looks brand new except for being only very slightly broken up, and the Rifters are firing missiles at the wreck instead of at the functioning transport vessels in the background.

The screenshots are clearly misleading.
Taken in 8000 x 5000 that is neither available or reasonable for the user and scaled down gives the impression of AA at a level that is not available to the client. Using static assets but leaving the viewer to assume this happens in "action" is similarly misleading.
None of this is illegal.
We just came to expect more from CCP and it's taking us a long time to get used to them just being another company.
A bit more...
- misrepresentation: screenshots - avoidance: hiding the blue bars in unfavorable threads - misleading the community: it's not a price hike, it's a simplification - general community mismanagement: Wrangler, sorry man but your not doing as good a job as you could
...and it'll start sinking in. Just let us live in denial a little longer.
