Edited by: Neth''Rae on 18/06/2008 19:20:27 It's kinda cool, one of our FC's is like a Flightcaptain on a boeing, always talking in a low, calm and instructive voice.
"Everyone align xxx, warping now.." "Hold on gate.. " "Jump.." "Covops warp to xxx gate and jump on contact" "xxx is primary, xxx secondary, need a point on xxx."
And when I look back at the time I played WoW, I remember most Raidleaders being aggressive, yelling, screaming, cursing.. Always screaming at you what to do and not to do.
"MORE DPS! MORE DOTS! TAKE AGGRO FFS! Keep tank ALIVE, HEALERS DAMNIT! I SAID HEAL!"
So is it just my FC that is really cool, or is this generally how it is in EVE? I haven't really been involved in EVE PvP before, so it's all quite new to me. I'm especially suprised since EVE is alot harsher than WoW.. Wiping on a raidboss is just a waste of time, while getting your BS popped is basically days wasted that you'll need to farm iskies to get back.
Please don't flame me though for mentioning the W*W-word, or comparing it to EVE.. It's just something that I thought of and found kinda funny and interesting..

Typically FCs in EVE need to maintain a very cool head because unlike in WoW, you have to deal with the human element. You're fighting against players -- not computers -- and the random element is increased exponentially.
The thing is, with comms buzzing, you will miss important details. A tenth of a second is super important in EVE, and if you have people chattering away and an FC has to say SHUT UP CLEAR COMMS then there goes that tenth of a second.
I tend to go against the popular EVE-style FC though, with a raised excitement level and more energy. I used to shout -at- people, nowadays I just get loud when excited. :) It's an intense game, and when something great happens it feels good.

Oh sorry that was an automatic reflex to mention of WoW. Fine post, good observation. EVE is better.

I didn't know that commanders in WoW were screaming maniacs, but that may come from the fact that in WoW the consequences of being a bad commander aren't nearly as bad as in EVE, so you get lots of people taking up the role that don't know a clue about it and think yelling is the way to go.

Morale has a larger impact in EVE than in most other MMOs, especially over the long term. A confident and calm FC will inspire confidence and calm in it's members in addition to allowing the FC to think more clearly.
In WoW, morale doesn't matter much for many reasons.
Plus, raids in wow consist of X proportion of damage/tank/healer/etc followed by pulling out a flowchart of the scripted actions they need to complete. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

Also if a fleet comander is yelling and swearing at me i might pop him..
It has happened before, a fleet comander was being a real ass so we removed him of his duties (went through a whole alliance investigation and crap lol, this was before officaial alliances).
But realisticly cooler heads = less losses and more kills. The fleet wont do well and someone wont stay a fleet comander long if they cant keep things calm and organized.

FCs in eve have to deal with much more than just their immediate grid. Overall fleet composition and position changes all the time and can encompass several systems. Intel comes from all angles. It's a much more complex best.

A basic tenant of leadership is that you have to keep a calm head regardless of what is happening. If you freak out or flinch it will demoralize your guys which means they'll start screwing up and dying.
Quite aside from that, despite how serious folks take it (myself included) it's still a game, still voluntary. I've podded FCs that I've seen try to humiliate myself or others under them.
You treat your pilots with respect that you'd in turn want yourself. Or else you'll find you have no one to lead.

Raids also have less folks then fleets. A 40 man fleet is on the smallish size for a fleet fight (though a huge roaming gang). EvE players also tend to be older, your FC might be a retired 747 or military pilot.

Edited by: Haradgrim on 18/06/2008 19:55:20 I think that WoW is a bit of a bad comparison because the Raids are so easy. The raid leader is more like an instructional video to go along with a set of Ikea cabinet instructions. In EVE the FC is like your buddy on the phone telling you how to build a cabinet starting with the whole tree.
A much better comparison would be Everquest, back in its glory days; EQ was probably the only game to ever hold a candle to EVE in terms of difficulty. A raid leader had to be 1 part sherlock, 1 part churchill, 1 part tolkein to complete the more difficult encounters, and the Complete Heal chain coordination was one of the coolest and hardest things I've ever witnessed in an MMO. Anyone who defeated the Avatar of War (took 65 people) or Ventani the Warder prior to the release of the shadows of Luclin expansion has my eduring respect in any MMO no matter how new they are to the game.... --

FCing in EVE, is totally different then being a raid leader. A raid leader, just needs to know the particulars of what the raid is going for, and to know the mobs your gonna fight. Theres not much in the way of tactics.
Where as in EVE, tactics is what wins the day. Just having peeps and shouting at them to do stuff isnt what wins battles, its the calm, cool and collected FC's who plan their actions as if playing a game of chess.
Another important difference is that FC's in EVE must deal with gang morale and inspire their troops to fight. In WoW, your just raiding cuz you want an item or whatever or points. Where as here in EVE we fight for our corp/alliance, our space, our brothers, our very survival. A good FC understands this and can rally his fleet to fight against insurmountable odds, sacrificing their hard earned ships and isk, for the fleet/corp/alliance what ever, with out question.
I also feel the do or die nature of EVE comes into play here as well. In WoW, you finish your raid WOOT!, lets come back tomorrow and do it again! Whereas in EVE, you know that with every ship destroyed your causing some one a loss. Also if you die in WoW big woop, just go get your corpse, In EVE you lose your ship and your **** outta luck. The greatest FC's understand this and show appreciation for your efforts.
But this isnt to say theres not any raging pre-pubescent know it all FC's that do nothing but freak out and be-little their own troops.
P.S. if any of my WoW assumptions are off, sue me, i only played for 2 days

I haven't experienced the "50 DKP MINUS!!!!" insanity in EVE.
I have seen FCs getting exasperated when fleet members don't follow orders (usually when someone jumps when told to hold on a gate). Also, imminent titan kills seem to get them kind of worked up. But my limited experiences have been good; FCs don't last long if they are not both competent and good at leading.

The difference may be largely the quality of your associates. There are, indeed, lots of terrible raid leaders in WoW, but there are also some good ones. As has been pointed out already, PvE raids are pretty well scripted. If the raid leader is telling people what to do, you are already loosing. In skilled raids, all you hear is social chatter. Until they get to something difficult or someone makes a mistake, that is, at which point vent is immediately silent. Then you hear things like "pull yyy to zzz, and move it to the corner," or "switch to the add," or "second rotation in."
Also, action in eve is fundamentally slower, but it doesn't stop. In WoW, the low, calm, instructive voice comes on after you wipe, while people are getting set for the next pull.
And, since this thread doesn't seem to have one yet....

Most WoW raid leaders also dont have the vast PvP politics of eve. I've seen FC's popped by their own for being douche bags. Quality leadership has more bonuses to it than just victory.

Yeah well, ofcourse there's alot of sense in what everyone here is saying.. I just thought FC's would be a little more strict, with like militaristic discipline and maybe curse a little now and then.. And then I remembered W*W and the difference was a bit hilarious, I've really grown to hate w*w, and I hate it more and more the more I get involved with EVE..
I like the Piano Consert vs Throwing up out of a window comparison :>

Edited by: Des Garcons on 18/06/2008 21:32:56 There both totally different. Wow raids are a much smaller group of ppl. You get to know ppl better since the biggest thing there is 25 man raids. Eve is pretty impersonal in big fleets of 200.
I accually liked being on vent in wow more than teamspeak in eve, but i think eve is a much deeper game than wow. Wow vent has a wild feeling were ppl can blurt out anything ******** and everyone laughs and has a weirdly fun time. If they tried to do the same in an eve fleet all you would hear is ppl yelling coms coms and only the FC should be speaking :X
Eve tends to attract nerdy players who are into scifi and arnt as outgoing. Wow tends to attract pretty much everyone so you get a weird mix of people.

I think in WoW you sometimes get that kind of excited shouting at the end of boss fights when you're usually down a fair few people and getting close to a wipe. For the most part my experience of raiding in WoW was just chilled out banter while people just got on with their job. The games so scripted that you don't really need to think about what you're doing and besides I seemed to spend most my time just pressing three buttons over and over again for several hours on the off chance I might actually get a useful drop and have the most DKP to buy it.
Not the most taxing of things to do and certainly not worth getting stressed over.
