I'd like to share this little thing that happened to my Corp mates. We log on and find we have an Eve mail. We are at war. Nothing new there since thats the way Eve works except for a few details which are a bit sickening and ironic. I'll just post a copy of the Eve mail my CEO got as a reason :
Quote: 2004.05.13 19:44:00 Greetings,
As you have no doubt noticed, BDCI has declared war on your corp. Very soon, your pilots will experience the thrill of combat in Empire space! Exciting, it is not? Nowhere shall be safe... except inside a station, of course.
This will end in one of two ways:
1.) You deposit the sum of 60 million ISK into my account. Why that number? Well, the number set by whomever it was your corp ****ed off in E&B. I'm just the messanger.
2.) We get bored hunting your members and move on to something else.
Number two is not likely to happen soon. I would urge you to take option one as soon as possible as I can assure you that my pilots can do more than 60 million ISK in damage to your corp in a relatively short time.
The choice is yours. Make the right one for yourself and your corp. We are mercs. This is not personal so don't take it as such.
See you soon!
Sel
That was sent by Seleene from the Body Count Inc.
Now for those of you who were in EnB and on Andromeda my guild was the Freedom Fighters. We came to Eve as refugees when EA killed EnB. The Corp is 99% from the same guild and the oldest member is barely 1 1/2 months old in Eve.
I have no issues going to war against another guild of the same age as us if just for the fun of it, its just a game.
Now we have a bit more complex situation, we have some person who has a grudge against Freedom Fighters in EnB and has carried that grudge with him here to Eve, has highered Mercs to hunt us down.
Now for the important question : Are we safe in our homes, our children, spouses ?
We already have someone who has a grudge from another game who is hiding behind this group of mercenaries .. I might need to change my real life name now and so do my Corp mates

ahh ...... good question i like to think that 99.9% of the time this kind of thing is in essence good natured and stays online
though i have been told of at least one time where a player of a game took it too seriously

Well, if you recieve any abuse through convos, local, evemails etc, file a harassment petition immediately.
Other than that I don't really understand why they want a war over 60 million. But one suggestion is that you look for an alliance and see if they are willing to help you it if you join them or something.
You can obviously fight the war alone too.

I'd like to say from the start, that so far, Body Count has acted with honor towards us, though ofcourse it's a little scary to know we might be fasing their guns this time tomorrow..
So while we'd like discussions about this, I dont want it to be seen as though we're slamminng or badmouthing Body Count Inc.

What I'm wnodering is who would be so crude as to do this from E&B. I can think of a few cowardly characters who we shunned out of our guild due to bad behaviour/language/stealing .
Rest assured one way or another I personally aim to find out who this is and deliver them a package with my name on it in the form of a podding.
Of course I hold no grudge against BDCi it's a MORPG and that is the role they have chosen to play. i do not know what my superioirs have decided to do yet, but in the meantime you shoot me i shoot you? :) spose i better upgrade my clone

This is BDCI's mindset, we attempt to make the targets of these contracts feel welcome to ask questions and discuss the options they have before them, in the end BDCI's goals are to make a profit and do so through contract killing, with this being said we strive to maintain a professional image while carrying out these contracts. _______________________________

I totaly agree with Henna, we have nothing against Body Count, they are mercs and they are doind what they are paid to do.
My only concern is the person who hired them. Incidents have happened in real life due to online games. SOme poeple take that too far and personally to have that thing happen from one game to be carried over into another game ? It really makes you wonder about safety.
It would have been different if who ever has the grudge actually moves up and faces us instead of hiding and cowering.
Seriously folks, be really careful while playing online games. Things might get nasty and not in the online world.
Call me paranoid but when you know it happened before you can be sure it'll happen again.

I can understand what you're saying Spacehulk. During our last contract a member of the "victim" corp sent real life death threats to both Jezzebell and Seleene. It was ridiculous. It was petitioned and I hope the GM's did something about it. The GM's won't tell you the punishments they give out.
Just make sure you petition anything like that. People that do that shouldn't be playing games like this.
As for the war, it would be easier if you paid up. If not, then we shall see you on the field of battle. ----------------------------

It is unfortunate that some people take games too seriously, but it is a fact none the less.
Im just a neutral bistander (pardon my spelling) but why dont you use the situation to your advantage?
You dont know the party that is bearing the grudge against you, but if im not mistaken, Body Count does... Why not pay the ransom, then pay Body Count double to track down your enemies, fair is fair after all...

I say you use your time to learn pvp, this is an invaluable opportunity for good experience and fun.
You're going to take heavy losses while learning, so stick to frigs, use stock equipment, ask for setup tips from experienced pilots, and always make sure that you have an updated clone.
Other than that, get on voice chat and start kicking some butt! _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. "Can I be a consultant for EVE II?" - WhiteDwarf |

It would be nice to learn PvP against equally skilled players and not some professional assassins. If this loser who has carried a grudge over is such a big man why doesnt he just fight himself? 1 on 1 a frigate duel to the death.
Instead he hides like some coward behind the skirt of a professional assassin. I'm sure body count wants to make a profit but I have to believe there are other targets out there you could attack besides a bunch of newbies.
Just my opinion. |

Let me take this opportunity to clear a few things up.
1.) I have no idea what other merc corps are experiencing, but the influx of new E&B players/corps has spawned what seems to be an avalanche of vendettas. Over then last two weeks, BDCI has received more than one such contract. Apparently, the lack of PvP over in E&B let some anger build up and these people see EVE as their release valve for that. Let this serve as notice that this is not the first, nor the last contract of this type we shall attempt. Business is literally booming right now.
2.) I can assure BDCI's targets that I meet with each employer in a private convo and if they start swearing and talking like they are going to be sending people mail bombs, the convo ends immediately. In-game revenge is fine, but there is a line which we prefer not to cross. Myself and another BDCI employee have been on the receiving end of such nonsense and understand all too well that some people are better suited to playing Gran Turismo 3 than an online interactive game such as EVE.
3.) BDCI consists of players who have decided to pursue the merc path in EVE. Our goal is to do so with a level of detachment and professionalism that will speak for itself. We enjoy what we do, but there is no malice involved. Which leads me to my next point.
4.) To those who might raise their voices at attacking a n00b corp: **** off. For one thing, it's insulting to our target. And yes, I said target, not victim. I don't buy the concept of a n00b such as has become commonplace on these forums. Anyone with any knowledge of this game knows that a new player can be lethalafter three to four weeks of training. Look at corps such as Omega Academy as just one example. If our target wishes to put up a fight, then they will be met on the field of battle with respect accorded to any warrior. Smack talk means nothing; only the end result (who is in a pod) matters.
5.) DigitalCommunist raises an excellent point. While it would be easier, and most likely less expensive in the long run, to simply pay us off and make us go away, BDCI would not be unhappy if our target decided to throw everything they have at us. They might lose it all, of course, but they might do some damage to us as well and learn something in the process. As CEO of BDCI though, I would strongly advise against it. All the talk is amicable now, but when ships start exploding, people tend to get ratherą unstable.
In closing, the choice to pay or fight is now in the target corp's hands. The CEO or her appointed representative may contact me in game to discuss terms whenever they please. Good luck to all involved. -

Spacehulk, I have no idea what kind of skills you guys have trained. But this is an excellent opportunity to learn PVP while you have no Implants to loose.
Train missiles skills and use friagates and fight in groups, a group of frigates can take out a BS if they are properley armed and used. (mOo has a nice video showing it being done)
Hopefully you find out who your real enemy is

Piece of advice for you, don't pay them, 60m can buy a lot of frigates, you'd be better spending your money on supplies and fighting it out with them.
Perhaps some bellicose freelancers may join up with you just for the combat experience? I know if I didn't have commitments with Gradient I certainly would.
Don't be lulled by the facade of civility from these mercs, they don't call them 'dogs of war' because they are honourable. Expect a dirty fight and you won't be disappointed.
I daresay your nemesis will surface eventually, these people find it hard to resist the urge to gloat. Once you know who it is you know what to do! Personally I wouldn't hire 'dogs' though I'd do it myself, much more satisfying and honourable as well.
I wish you all the best in this.

To The Freedom Fighters:
If you're only a month or two old most of you, you will be no match for the experienced players of BodyCount. But don't let that get you down, and keep your clone up to date. This will be the best way to learn PvP and as someone already mentioned 60million buys a LOT of frigs Just be willing to lose lots of 'em and at least a few clones, and you'll come out the other side an able PvP'er...
I've lost a ton of frigs and cruisers this way.. fighting much more experienced players
Have fun (and don't count your ship losses, it gets depressing)!

best advice i was given is ... hide :)
yes merc corps like to fight and prolly very good at that . but i dont think anyone like to jump 25 gates then see he need to jump more 25 gates ...
check local , go out of the highways , split to small groups , keep on the run , watch local always make some insta and safe bookmarks ,
and you know one thing that enb has taught us is patiance .. use it :)
just make this contract the most annoying/boring thing that body inc had encountered . merc's like the thrill if not they would kill rocks , use that to your advantage .
that and if you can keep hostility / flame level to minimum and the war will be over in a week . and you might discover some interesting stuff in your travels :) .

You have to realise, that EVE is a game where the strong survive, and the weak die... the strong pick on the weak, thats why we are fighting the CA allaince, hehe.
forming a corp with mostlly EaB players will leave u guys open to attack, as most corps need a ballance, with old and new players....
if body count are looking for entertainment, celestial apocalypse would be happy to oblige, by filling up your war slots and moving back to empire:) ....

Edited by: Rana Mortius on 14/05/2004 12:04:22 as you are a new corp they (body count) likely know little about you.
stay on the move. this a good time to open new offices across the galaxy and get to see the galaxy itself.
as you stated you are about 12 players who have been in eve for a bit over a month. you probably dont have the kind of money that is asked from you. this 'war' will give you an excellent opportunity to get used to high risk life which will be a big bonus once you venture out into 0.0
- add all body count members to your list of buddies (this will make it easier for you to skim through the list of players in local and assess the situation. also you will soon learn your opponents online habits and be able to use timezones to your advantage) - make insta dock bookmarks for your headquarter (should you intend to keep using it for the time of war) - engage only at your advantage - drag the conflict out as long as you can (if anything this might inflict hefty costs on the person who issued the contract) - keep moving (if you set up shop away from your head quarter and are tracked down... move) - create scout alts that are not in your corp. use them to check if the station you intend to undock from is camped
all i can come up with. dont pay any ransom as it will only make you a bigger target.
you will be suprised how much a good war can spice up things :)

Look, it's quite easy to avoid an unwanted war if you're willing to use some cowardly tactics.
Simply put at least one alt for every main in the corp. Then exit the corp with the mains, keeping them in the (safe and impossible to declare war on) noob corps. Never take the alts from station, simply use them for hangar access, etc.
It's annoying and cowardly (although hiring mercenaries to kill noobs is just as cowardly, so I don't see why you should care), but at least you'll avoid losing ships if you really have no interest in fighting.

Just a thought but I am guessing that BDCI will be charging their client on a per diem rate as anything overly protracted would hurt their pockets if it were purely fixed fee.
Drag the war on for as long as possible, enjoy the PvP, watch your opponents carefully and learn from them and make your nemesis pay a lot of money for the privelege of you getting what will be very good PvP training at the cost of a few new frigates.
