For at least two years, the dominant conflict in the game has been between two alliances known as Band of Brothers and Goonswarm. Band of Brothers, known as BOB, is a wealthy, elite (some would say elitist) group that many players simultaneously admire, fear and despise. Goonswarm is a proudly profane group that conducts highly effective psychological warfare alongside its military campaigns. Like the members of BOB, Goons are also simultaneously admired, feared and despised by many Eve players.
Perhaps the most famous, powerful player in Eve is a character called SirMolle, leader of BOB. In real life he is Par Molen, a 41-year-old manager for a heating-and-cooling systems company in Sweden. Shortly after CCP, the company that makes Eve, convened its player council in Iceland, Mr. Molen welcomed more than 150 players from more than 15 countries to the annual weeklong BOB barbecue near Copenhagen.
At the barbecue Mr. Molen unveiled a new strategy called Max, for Maximum Damage. While most Eve campaigns center on taking and controlling regions of space, BOBÆs new Maximum Damage doctrine focuses on simply pillaging and destroying the territories of others.
ôOur goal is to control all of Eve,ö Mr. Molen said in an interview over an Internet voice chat program. ôItÆs totally impossible to claim all of Eve physically. But itÆs possible to control the people. ItÆs possible to control the alliances, be it by economic means or fighting means or political means. That was the goal and that is the goal.ö

I gotta say, regardless of the relative merits of Max, it is somewhat impressive to announce this in the New York Times. Not that the paper is the bastion of journalistic integrity it once was, but it seems that at least one of the writers is an Eve fan. That's the only way I can think of to explain this puff piece...

I realise Sir Molle must have submitted those details along with permission to publish them but it would frighten me to do so i think. I would be afraid because having all those real life details revealed in what should be an anonymous thing is bad, maybe i'm just paranoid. Just dont answer the door if a strange voice say's "pizza!!"

Okay. So they're going to use glass-cannon BS to take down cynojammers then bring in 150 cap ships to one-cycle all the towers in a system, ****-sock it for two days so as to completely dominate the system the whole time, blow up all the POS, then leave. Or you can pay them a tribute of 10 bil/month or whatever for them to leave you alone.
This sounds a great way to never shoot another spaceship again.

Goons for me was a means to andend - the end being bob humiliated, crouched in their own space. Their allies gone due to molle's egomania and utter incompetence. I had a blast kicking their ass for the better part of a year straight. Fit in? I never did. Ask goons themselves, but I got to kill bob****gots everyday. That was all I needed and I was quite good at it.
I might be a huge****got - in fact I'm pretty sure I am. But I'm nothing compared to them. I stand in AWE of their ghey.

...and the overwhelming bulk of their space, as well as any semblance of "invulnerability" they may have once had.
BoB used to be seen by most of EVE as the summum of badazz; now they're just another loud-mouthed windbag alliance with an attitude. Shoot them enough, and they retreat.

Somewhat brief article, but then again, most people wont be able to read more than a few paragraphs about an online game
I must say I would quite like BoB if the manage to shift focus away from the conventional. Exactly how and hwoare unknowns.
Interestingly enough, there are a lot of players as well as goons sounding very bitter about the whole thing.
I for one would welcome a change of the overall strategy of 0.0 alliances. Perhaps those who also enjoy the game feel the same. I like an opponent that tries new things. If old ideas arent working or stop being as fun as they used to be, try something new.
I kind of feel sad for those who are stuck. The whole "they cheat"-debacle is getting old, as are the titan-related complaints. But this is CAOD and a degree of amateur-putdowns must be expected I guess
At least this post gave me a reason to temporarily turn off my forum filtering. Just long enough to realize that Goons are as big, if not bigger failures than BoB.
BoB wants to own all of 0.0 - an admirable and somewhat overly ambitious goal. Goons want to, well I dont really know, but one thing they used to want was BoB dead.
Both alliances have "failed" to some degree, but I dont see Goons getting their meta-game smackdown delivered via the New York Times.

I read quite well TwoSide, considering English is not my main language that is. As you may remember, selective reading is a Rah! skill.
That article was 98% BoB and 2% goons. Any PR-consultant would agree that BoB got their message across, while goons merely managed to get a piggy-back-mention.
My point was that a few people are stuck in the past. Both in terms of what they want and expect from the game, but also in the way they continually bring up past transgressions.
Also, I am way cool and that entitles me to have a lofty attitude towards all the non-Gemeni people. |

Thing is, the shift away from trying to hold many stations has already occurred to a large extent. Before, the focus was on owning many stations, renting them out to others and so on, which BoB have done to a larger extent than most.
Now, most alliances tend to see holding many stations and large swathes of territory themselves as more of a nuisance rather than something to aspire to - with the focus switching towards who is controlling the moons rather than who is holding the stations/territory.
In an accessible region like say ... Fountain... not bothering with stations much is in fact a very sensible solution. In an inaccessible region far into 0.0 much less so.
Soo.. if just going around capping moons and ganking caps without bothering with stations is what they're trying to sell as their drastic new idea, they're about half a year late.. if it's something else, we'll see. |

The funny thing about this, is that folks are focusing on the Goon/BOB thing, and the OMG They're in the NYT thing.
Most aren't looking at how this is going to effect 0.0 alliacne's.
Look at the past.
When has BOB had the most fun? When they were steamrolling over the south and when the whole south was "Choo Chooing" towards NOL.
Now, it's a reapeat. Sorta. They're STILL going to go out, and most likely siege systems, blow up POS's and so on. But they're NOT going to take them over? (Other then a few POS's for a cap ship highway most likely and some high end moons)
But if they for example steam roll across the south again, and NOT have to worry about defending any of the territory they take.. Takeing a scorched earth approach to things. Then they'll be able to focus their power on destroying the space of hostile alliance's.
Once they've done that, then they can move on to the next, without worrying about leaving 10% of their people, and billions of isk in POS's in their wake, and just focus on the NEXT one.
But what WILL happen in their wake? Most likely smaller alliance's allied with BOB will roll in and claim SOV. Why not? I would. You may even see BOB "Pets"/Allies helping out in this MAX approach to 0.0 pvp.
Step back and look at it.
You get to go to a hostile alliance's space. Pew pew. Crush them. Then move on to the next. Minimal POS/Supplychain work... other then moveing around some fuel via Titan's/Jump Freighters for Cap ship Fuel.
And in their wake, new alliance's can move to 0.0 and setup shop. They can be potential targets a year from now once BOB has rolled around the map.
So what's your best bet?
Clockwise?
Or
Counter Clockwise?
I'll go Clockwise. Some good moons in Fountain. Say high to PL and friends when you go through. :)

So the Max strategy is clearing out hostiles from territory, then installing pets. That sounds familiar. . .
Does Max differ from traditional conquest only in that BoB won't defend their pets from counter-attack, because territory defense is not part of the doctrine?
And if their pets don't take sov, then the more space BoB clears, the harder it will be to patrol all of it to prevent others from returning after BoB has gone on to engage other enemies.
Max sounds like an easier doctrine to begin than to sustain.

the only twist with the new MAX campaign is that we get to see which carebears re willing to bribe BOB not to attack them
but the twist we receive is that even if BOB attack they will not be taking sov so the alliance that gets attacked is never in danger of long term loss of SOV

I dont understand this originality jab. Would it of been better for them to wage a war in the same fashion they(and nearly every other space holder) has been doing for their entire existence? This is actually a original type campaign for their alliance as they have never waged war in this fashion at a full scale.
However what type of war would be considered original? Goons are complaining that they aren't original because they're already fighting people without threats of conquering, but Goons didn't come up with this type of campaign either.

The point I apparently failed to make was that eve is a popular game and big groups get their 15 minutes. Does that mean power has shifted dramatically since that article posted? Not at all. I just pointed out that the argument people who either don't know the past, or are conveniently 'forgetting,' is wrong. I don't have the proof handy to avoid being called a liar, but I'm sure someone does. |

MAX was not explained in not much detail at all - but it sounds like BoB wants to control EVE through fear, influence, and embargo's sorta?
That sounds like a revolutionary approach at warfare in EVE - however It sounds like it could suck badly - for all sides. The Embargoes in example, could require BoB alliances to just bite on it for a while - in effort to starve opposition, or everyone else who may be considered "collateral damage". I just hope it doesn't seriously screw up the economy in EVE - that is if this actually is pulled off.
This is a huge undertaking and will require the cooperation of many-many-many people with a good head on their shoulders - even Molle himself cannot effectively coordinate just a fraction of this, if this happens on a Galactic scale. BoB will need a army of agents at work on this, however, they already in a way do, for the most part.
BoB Spy Rings have usually been quiet, in the shadows, and professional - but this sounds like it would be the first major activation of the BoB Spy Ring, to the point where we can see them out in the light, feel the effects, and be aware of who's causing it - unless people are incredibly stupid and blind, which never fails to amaze me...

Not whining about bob playing smart - but I'm concerned about the complexity of BoB's strategy, on such a large scale, and the sheer seriousness of it, would take the fun and casual play away from EVE. A lot of people like to play to win - and that's fine, however this could force casual gamers to deal with this, and maybe even stop playing casually.
I have no idea what the plans of MAX is in detail, however if they want it to work - I imagine this could possibly happen at it's peak, so I can't help but be concerned of it screwing up markets for a lot of players, even those who are not involved in the war in any way at all. If bob creates enough embargoes, it's going to eventually effect people outside BoB's targeting computers, and create collateral damage.
If that became the case, would CCP step in and intervene? If it actually happened that way, and BoB was controlling all the market flow in their favor, this change would literally change ALL of EVE. People would acknowledge the economy to be moreso a prison - and CCP would have to as well maybe, depending on what they want?
If CCP wants the alliances to run their course undisturbed, then I guess they would let it be - but if they are more concerned about the game being ruined, they would have to step in if a lot of people felt that way about it. I'm not CCP, so I'd have to hear it from them - but I imagine they would say yes to both, and would be at a cross on this issue? |

If that is how it's going to be, though it sounds like thats just a part of what is described in MAX, it's already been done. In fact, it's done all the time - pretty much every single npc 0.0 based alliance employees this tactic - which usually is nothing more then the local pest more than anything.
I had read they were going to basically operate by controlling the other alliances (making them pets), by economic means (embargoes), or by fighting politically (propaganda, political PvP), and fighting by traditional military means (pillaging, raiding, etc).
To me, as I was reading this, it sounded like BoB is basically going to continue what they are doing, but drop the whole POS war thing and fighting over territory - but rather using embargos, propaganda, political, and Total War tactics to drive opposing alliances into submission by breaking their spirit.
The situation that many of BoB's pet alliances were in, were a perfect example of these tactics BoB has used and is saying they want to use more - they break alliances so badly, until they submit, surrender, and pay protection money and spill blood for BoB when BoB says.
I have been very neutral in the central conflict between BoB and Goon, and don't care for it - however, and I'll probably be flamed for this by forum alts, but I'd rather live nextdoor to Goon space and deal with their crap, then live next door to BoB space and have them relentlessly bully and milk me and everyone else in my alliance. Tolerating them out of fear just seems like slavery to me, IMO - or being in a prison made out of fear.
If they wanted to control the entire galaxy, this would be on a galactic scale - which is why I was concerned about all the embargoes - it would effect everyone, not just BoB's enemies.
But either way - they would be an alliance with very little space - since that wouldn't be their focus in this plan. They would instead have all of their forces spreading influence and getting more pets for them to milk resources and fleets out of.
As to wither or not they would want to keep Delve in the MAX plan - don't know, I suppose they could - however all it would take is for Delve to be sieged, and their MAX plan would come to a screeching halt. If they wanted to go with MAX, without end, they have to give up sovereignty altogether, and treat their influence as their new measurement of power - not territory.
However, yea - it is a coincidence this happens during the BBQ - it could be something as simple as a motivational stunt. Or, it could be something that was nothing more than talked about, and BoB may not even do this - and this is just the new thing everyone in COAD has to gossip about. We just have to wait and see what BoB does then - but it would take a few months probably to even notice MAX actually working (if it does), if they are indeed speaking the truth about this and will follow it.
BoB has had a history and reputation for keeping anything like this secretive - it is odd they'd even talk about it, unless they just wanted to be in a NY Times article. Maybe it's just a attempt to mislead, or they wanted to be in the NY Times, or they really mean it. |

It is simply a ******** ill thought out strategy of fail.. It is fun though to go out and kill opposing fleets but thats all it will do.. MAX is another name like BOB and thats all this will ever be a name, a fluff peice in a newspaper and a lot of jokes regarding how Molle sits around wanting to be as cool as Tyraxx by wearing an even larger pink hat..
