I remember about a year and half ago when I quit eve there were always tons of pirates hanging out in this forum and sharing stories, videos, kills, tips, whatever. Now it seems like all of that is gone.
Are there still any well known pirate corps? Do people still do the rove around and ransom ships, camp gates for isk?

I'll stick my neck out here and break the combo by giving an honest reply. I think it has certainly degenerated alot in the oldskool 'roam low-sec' sense, which is something alot of the oldskoolers mourn the loss of.
That is not however to say that it has completely died out. I am though, personally of the opinion that the profession of piracy has been massively neglected. I know it's meant to be hard mode and I'm not after it being easier, I just want more pirate related content :D

I recently returned to the game after a break and I have found quite a bit changed.
It is rare to encounter another solo pilot, I am not talking about the 2 week old players ratting in a .3 space, but more of targets that would actually be fun to engage. If you happen to come accross a solo pilot 9/10 times if you check adjacent gates/systems with your cov ops alt you'll find he has friends waiting.
The game has definately shifted from small gang warfare into a large gang mentality most commonly using some form of baiting. Piracy is of course still there in the sense that there are -10s rolling around, it has just changed.
A lot of engagements follow a similar pattern of 2-4 players engage 1-3 players who in turn have buddies warp in/uncloak/undock w/e then the aggressing gang either dies or was just baiting the defending gangs friends into the fight so they can out blob them.
In short if you want to not die too much you have to roll around with a solid group, and dont forget to mix in a couple falcons, 1 to jam their gang and another with just caldarri racials to jam their 2-3 falcons.
Dont get me wrong though, this game is still a blast, just gotta adjust to the changes.

Well maybe Cranberry was right, maybe he was the last of the legendary pirates that made EVE what it was...
That, or maybe all the pirates are ninja salvaging at the moment. It's getting to be such a fad... salvage prices are dropping accordingly.

Piracy is very much alive and well in the bleaks. Factional warfare has brought lots and lots of targets.

In my area, piracy is alive and well. Lots of competition as well as plenty of anti-pies and random targets. Over just 4 systems we managed to kill at least a dozen ships/pods, 1 successful ransom, a couple faction mods, and a firetail BPC. We also didn't loose any ships in our gang of 4 which is always a plus.
Everyone is right about the baiting and falcon tactics which is rather annoying but if you play things smart and get to know the region locals before committing your better ships, you can usually size people up pretty well.
Having a lot of intel as well a few decisive victories will usually earn the grudging respect and fear of local pirates and anti-pirates alike.

It is easy to say that piracy doesnt exist from the safety of high sec... do a bit of roaming and you will find plenty of pirates. Most pirates today exist because they were sick of claiming space in 0.0 and wanted to return to the smaller roaming gangs and away from the blobs.
There are still old school pirates out there... just harder to see because they are spread out and you have to actually enter low sec to find them. With faction warfare, many people are busy on alts as well...
Piracy is alive and well... _________________________ CIVIL DEFENSE |

Lars speaks the truth. Tbh, piracy is still there. Though a lot less than before, and I'm not that old. And fights happening are mostly pirates vs pirates, sorta.
Because of the new "mentality", everyone might have gotten a bit more shy about fighting. You have to take a lot of time to gather intel to avoid painful reality checks. It's a game of outsmarting, it's always been. And if you're getting blobbed/falcon'd, well you just been outsmarted too, sad and true.

The "good ole" belt piracy is pretty much gone. I have also noticed a shift in victims.
Victims are less vocal. I don't know if this is evolution from other MMOs but my hatemail of death threats, put your head in an oven, etc has gone down I'd say 90%, and my wallet has increased by about the same.
With low-sec dead here is what I see on the other two areas, and it is similar (just different in scale)
In empire space:
This has evolved to exthorting (with wardec) entire 100 person+ corps for a relativly small (but individually large) sum of around 100mil on average from a one or two person corp. It's a very shadowy business and very political, and pays very well. But, take the experience and tactics of a couple old-skool low sec belters coupled with the new ships and fittings, and a couple pirates can obliterate, (slaughter really) ANY blob of 10-30 ships they encounter.
In 0.0:
Take those same old-skool belters, give them powerful ships and even more skills, they can annhilate any alliance roamer gang. And, with 0.0 Alliance mega-blobs and cap ships, big alliance blobs are getting slower and slower, with agile pirate gangs waiting/hiding out the blob and striking faster than the blob. So a moderately sized pirate corp can control an area of space as nomads without being burdened by a large logistical footprint using NPC outposts.
My warped take really. In summary victims are keeping their mouth shut more, pirates are becoming more political, and low-sec camping/sniping/ganking has been nerfed to oblivion. Even ore-theiving has been nerfed from pro-miners with 10 accounts sucking empire right after uptime, and a ore barge that has the cargo space of a jet-can.
The only honest empire pirating nowadays that makes headlines is suicide ganking which is staring at a nerf bat also.

I solo pirate mostly (in a taranis or my shit-fit Thorax) As a semi-new player (under 4 mil SP still about 1 mil in industrial related endeavours /me smacks forehead) It can be tough at times, isk isnt great as well, although if i get one or two ransoms per day+ salvage from wrecks i can turn a meager profit at times, although loosing a ship more than twice a week can severally put a damper on things. Still fun though.

It is not what I expected but the general opinion it is the most fun we have had in EVE so far.
IMO Piracey is now all about:
Probing Mission Runners Who's got the most Falcons Not hanging around in one place for to long Getting blobbed *Waves to GIS* Getting baited *Waves to Q-S* Baiting Ninja Gate Camping Being smart Blasterthrons Not seen to much ransoming yet TBH
As far as roaming goes, I notice more targets seem to come to us now we are Out Laws living in an Out Law Community. In fact we roamed Black Rise last ngiht and didn't see anywhere near as many targets as you'd expect.

what he said.
I think the problem is that piracy tends to be quite seasonable, priates have to evolve when new mechanics come into EVE< and the ones who stay behind have a hard time to make money anymore.
I do have to say though that a lot of losec regions seem to be dropping in activity and profitable targets.
over the last days two fleets disptched for a nice old roam in losec, one went towards goinard form Oulley, and the a roam yesterday in the placid region.
the Goinard area was pretty dead until one stage we actiallly had a 50 man GC sitting on the other side, we were 24, so a nice small gang. we jumped through and wanted to engage them and they ran away, it was really surprising, just goign by the numbers they shoudl of had the upper hand, kind of put it down to the Blinky red thing when 24 ships appear on the overview, flashy like a disco. and this was apparently also a FW hotspot, but no encounter.
Placid was weird too, about 6 months ago there were corps in that area that server our arses to us on a plate, but this time? nothing, we got hell of a lot of kills within a short time, but compared to a few months back, it was dead. NOrmally full of faction ships and good PvPers but nothing in this case.
also a lot of the Pirate corps have probably suffered the most after the Big alliances, in terms of people leaving them to 'try' FW. so many of the known Pirate alliances have crumbled to a small number, and I know this from how wel lthe recruitment has been goign for our alliance, sometimes gettign 10 to 12 people form a single corp applying at the same time, and staying there.
Pirates also don't stay in the same region for long anymore, like in the days, you woudl have a known pirate corp in one area, and they woudl be the underdogs, causing pain for eveyone there.
Thhese days, they don't do that either.
ah, where are the days, when a CNR woudl come through the gates at least three times a day to be removed from existence

Piracy, as mentioned before, is definitely not dead. However, yes it has changed quite a bit. I really really really miss the old days when I could roam around solo and not have to worry about a giant WTFPWN gang jumping me for hitting their bait.
There are next to no miners in lowesec anymore, no ratters for the most part. So most of it is gate/station camping or scanning people down in missions. I really miss the piratey times from about 1-2 years ago :( ---------------------------------------

I miss reading lots of the "good on ya!" posts in C&P. There's less thoughtful posts and more "ur a dumb nub" going on here. That said, I've seen several threads in recent days where there has been some old C&P flavor. Like this one, for example.
As EvE evolves, so should piracy. If what you were doing becomes less viable, change your tack. I think that's where the real beauty of EvE lies. The fact that what worked six months ago doesn't work so well now really keeps things fresh.

Yep since i started the age of the myrm has gone, being told constantly now that no one goes round low sec alone - i'd put it down to more people playing but really i wouldnt know - gate camps are stiil in many of the same systems and also at high sec ones more and more often - i see wrecks and cans all over the place, usually haulers but shuttles and Atrons (my atron :( to be precise) are getting ganked for valuables.
Maybe CCP should start a police corp like the FW militias entitling any within to treat low security status pilots like war targets? That might just make things worse.....

Edited by: Father Weebles on 13/07/2008 06:56:38 When I first joined Eve over 2 years ago I moved to Placid. There was a couple corps that were infamous for piracy. Fast forward a year, this time low sec right outside Geminate there was another group of pirates that claimed the area. Eventually, these pirates were kicked out by 00 pvp corps.
I think that as the population of Eve has gone up pirates have not been able to keep up, meaning there are less and less of them, and more and more alliance blobs. Also, as alliances have grown and moved their empire HQ's into lowsec, the small but elite pvp corps have followed them right into previous pirate territory. Due to the availability of 'free' targets right next door, pvp corps and alliance blobs go after pirates with little problem. It is impossible for these pirates to make a living being blown up and camped in stations all day, so they move to different regions that are known to be more ghetto (space with little value to alliances). I'm sure there are pirate corps that still live around Placid because it is right next to Syndicate, where no major alliance calls home. I suppose their numbers are more condensed in these certain regions of space.

Faceless alt 1, Crime and Punishment 0.
When you know where to look, piracy is still very much alive in Eve.
Sadly most of the mainstream stuff seen now is people craptalking eachother, sitting in gatecamps podding rookies and bigging themselves up with alts in an attempt to create some form of reputation.
I remember a time when this forum was full of genuinely funny stories, when people wrote piracy guides for rookie pirates and when people traded punches for real reasons.
I'm glad I decided to distance myself somewhat from this forum, it's done nothing more than turn into the lowsec version of COAD.
Bring back the glory days of piracy with Jexter and Fist, Shamis Orzoz, Drosssk, Fairlane, Zap, TBone, Siddy, Ikvar, Trey Azagthoth Tank and Daakkon along with m0o, The Jokers, Frick and Snigg, to be honest. What's around now isn't a patch on the character those guys had, and the stories they created.

As well as being able to kill frigates/inties (as you can now on warp to zero) you could kill haulers with ease, cruisers, recons etc
Dont forget this was before the HP boost as well - so ships had a good 33% less hitpoints.

You're making me even more nostalgic than I was. *Sigh*
And no, piracy isn't dead... I'd say it's more like... "zombified"... but not in the Yulai zombified way, because that would be somewhat cool.

There are enough eve vids that i have seen that say this but, leave your gang's and start pvping solo and you will find piracy. Its is a chance tho since you might run into a big group but, if you smart you might beable to beat them and out manover them. Find a ship you like equip it and go out there and see was new.

Piracy is completely dead. It has become so extremely safe for people to mine and rat in lowsec areas now like Mara and Aurohunen. I would really recommend that everyone flying a battlecruiser or a hulk head on out and get comfortable in these safe and profitable systems. ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

Well, Ive just reactivated recently with a few other people to pirate the same way we did years ago and tbh Im having just as much fun now as I did before. Maybe thats just because of the people Im with or the fact I dont care about losing ships/equipment.....
In all fairness this forum has become a joke and isnt really worth posting on anymore; I am only reading it because I'm bored at work. So if you are actually looking for evidence of piracey on the forums I dont know many that I hunt with or talk to that bother to post here anymore. The only people I recognise on these boards is Verone and Kublai.

lol, do you need to re-read my post? And dont get all emo with me. Let me clarify it for you; many people have already mentioned that 'old school' pirates dont pirate anymore, Im saything that yes there are still plenty, its just alot of them have lost interest in the forums, therefore the forums are nothing to go by with regards to pirate activity.

I think the two of us, along with kublai, kehmor (<3), ikvar since his return and a couple of others are the only ones left from all that time ago. Most have quit, or sold out to large alliances and become sheep with a number branded on their ass.
It's sad to see really. Most pirate corps don't tend to last that long these days, they generally tend to die out after 6-8 months as people find they can't handle being outlaw.
There's a few corps out there who've been surprising resiliant though, mainly due to sheer numbers giving them the staying power.
Lowsec is quite a different place than it was a four years ago, unfortunatley.

Piracy has fallen from grace very much in the last 8 months to a year.
Now days you just get a bunch of roaming gangs that are out to kill stuff. When you pay a ransom for the most part you can be expected to be popped anyway, with a ohh you paid one isk to much or one isk to less... people think they are kewl.
People say pirates have no honor, though I tend to disagree a good pirate has a good name, Its marked and cursed as a pirate but at the same time their reputation is known..
To many lolz kids out there that just get a power trip out of having another ship locked down and blowing it up, or doing something dirty sense after all thats what pirates are... dirty right?......
Having a -10.0 standing does not make you a pirate either... As many seem to think too.
As a counter to the problem I just moved out into 0.0, at least htere you know if its red its probably going to shoot at you the first chance it gets, and its going to blow you up... its not going to ransom you.. and your pod is done too
To all you old school true pirates "07" take up apprentices, pass on the knowledge and dont let the "honor" die!

Piracy isn't dead, in fact people keep asking this question about every other month. You don't have to keep asking a dead guy if he's dead right?

an interesting thread with some unusually measured replies.
since this character was born (my first character, i do have alt haulers for when i really need shopping and an alt trader now to sell stuff i loot)
my sole income is from piracy. i have a trading alt, that sells loot but the source of the isk is piracy, i kill people take their mods or ransom them. thats all i do.
killing people and being contracted to kill people.
personally i class myself as a pirate.

Piracy only seems like it is dead because it's much harder to accomplish value in today's galaxy. There is still opportunity there that no one wants to find anymore.
I have been a pirate since the days of my creation. Since the fall of some really good corps and pilots there hasn't been any real quality prospects to fall back on. We did have good prospects come along like Veto and the like, but again the idea of mixing old with the new has never turned over well in any event. So the turning towards our own corps and goals to only fail made it much worse.
Still today, I can't help but stress even more than before that alliances are spawning left and right. Alliances that control space and set laws to all those who pass. These laws, these rules or maybe these guidelines on which these weaker pilots follow in order to survive in a space that is unknown to them even when controlled is a prime hunting ground still today. It's unethical, maybe a little insane to most but where there is law; you will find me.
Piracy is not dead. It's only weeding out the pilots who don't deserve to be here.
