Ok, before I start, I want to say for the record this is not a whine post.
Last night while running a Level-4 mission, both my girl and I were probed out. Shortly there-after, said prober left and a Gila appeared and began to salvage and loot our wrecks. Being that I was in a salvager, I went back to the station and undocked in my Megathron Navy Issue (was in a mission fit, wasn't expecting what happened) and went to the mission area. Upon engaging said Gila, I was warp-scrambled and webbed (I know I was in deep crap now).
Two buddies came into the mission. A Basilisk and a Raven. However neither one of those guys had aggro. Only the Gila pilot. So here I am webbed, warp-scrambled, and staring Death in the eyes. I know what's coming. I knew it from the second that warp-scrambler went on me. The Gila pilot EJECTS as does the pilot from the Raven. Now I can no longer shoot the Gila OR the Raven OR the pod or I risk Concord action. So all I can do is wait. I try to warp out because there was a temporary pause in the warp scrambling but said Basilisk was a nano Basilisk and decided to bump me. Hehe. Clever, eh? Anyhow the original pilot I aggressed (Gila) now pops into said Raven and the Raven becomes bliny red. The Basilisk starts to rep the Raven from my assault and then also goes blinky red. I attempt to engage the Basilisk and the Raven tracking disrupts me.
I died. A painful death. My backup (Dominix) also died. =(
So was this an exploit? Or a clever gank? Using a Gila to aggro, having buddies come in, swapping ships (during which time I *cannot* engage) and whatnot? Just looking for some thoughts. So I lost a True Sansha Navy Issue Mega. Big deal.
Just looking for your thoughts. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) |

Aye. I know that, in itself, is not an exploit.
The part I am finding questionable is this:
I had engaged the Gila and then his buddies (Basilisk/Raven) showed up. Said guy in Gila **ejected** from the Gila (thus meaning I could no longer shoot at the Gila nor the pilots pod) and had to disengage. During that time, I could not do anything to prevent the gank. I had nothing to shoot at. The Raven pilot ejected and said Gila pilot took over the Raven. Then the Raven went blinky-red on me. So my question -- and the part I think is a possible exploit -- is the fact he ejected to avoid combat. I couldn't do **anything** during that time. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) |

Yep. That pretty much explains it. I was expecting to engage a Gila and only a Gila. Wasn't expecting this at all.
And said Gila was orbiting me with a MWD. My tracking was good. But not THAT good. Lol.

That was a pretty damn sweet gank.
Sol, the bad news is a think your gonna find that is not an exploit, though it may be deemed one if it becomes frequently used in todays game climate...
I think in this particular case, having never really heard of that particular use of game mechanics, CCP may in fact say "good job for planning that" to the guys who actually ganked you.
Also, never undock with the possibility of any form of aggression (can thieves included) without a combat fit (The guy stole from you, right in your face, you kinda tried to use the Mega as a show of force, kinda "F-OFF NAVY MEGA" thing), ESPECIALLY on a navy issue ship, but I'm pretty sure you've just been made aware of that.
All in all, I'd give it a clever gank factor of 8/10

Yeah. It was a mistake on my part for sure. It was tanked Therm/Kin and like I said, I was expecting just to engage a Gila. Had both my girls Domi and my Mega been fit for PvP properly, they all would've died. There's no doubt about that. It was my mistake for undocking in it. Lol.
Also I didn't know if you target an empty ship -- that they can't get into it. That's a new one on me and one I wish I knew about.
Note: It wasn't about a show of force. I was in a rush because I want to kill the Gila and it was all I had in the system. I was indeed sad to see that my Deimos and Myrmidon were two jumps away. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) |

His complaint is that he couldn't do anything while the switch was going on, as the aggression timer doesn't apply to pods. That might be a legitimate complaint, although I doubt it would change much since chances are his friends brought the battleship quite close to him to minimize downtime.

Exactly. The timer also doesn't apply to ships that are un-piloted. So I couldn't do anything to defend myself for about 45 seconds. ~Solo Hoist The Colors. (CEO) |

The best thing you could have done was stay aligned. As soon as he left the gila the point dropped and he would have had to relock you in the raven.
They could have bumped you out of alignment of course but no they did not exploit. It's borderline to me personally but eve is very black and white and they didn't break the rules.
edit: you can continue to shoot the gila after he ejects. If someone else hops in it. That's the exploit. ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

However that is not true. As someone already mentioned very correctly, he could've TARGETED the Gila and Raven. Thus making both pilots unable to board them. In this case the only thing the aggressors could've done is: 1. Basilisk tries to keep you bumped 2. The 2 other pilots would have to go away and grab some other ships before aggression runs out. Actually only 1 of them had aggression rights if i understood right. 3. Meanwhile you can call in friends to grab the Gila + Raven

That is pretty sweet, but I think it would be far more appropriate if the Gila (in this case) remained a legal target despite the fact that the pilot ejected.

As I recall you are only unable to board a ship that doesn't belong to you while it's targeted, so both pilots could have reboarded their original ships, and relied on the basilisk repping the gila to kill the navy mega. There is of course a 30s session change timer to reboard, so bumping aside, warping becomes possible.
It's not the first, or last, time we'll hear about mid-fight ship swaps.

Could be funny if done right ;)
Otherwise, no exploit there, just very cleverly done.
Alternatively, you could/should kept the Gila AND Raven locked. As far as I can recall, you cannot board ships which are locked.

If he had targeted the raven he would have been fine. He should have popped the gila (since he can, concord wont come) and then he should have just left while keeping raven targeted. I am sorry he is dumb

Regarding the "target the ships so they can't board"-tactic, afaik the original owner can always board the ship, targetted or not. Not sure if that applies to corp members as well, but from tests on SiSi I've always managed to board my own ship while targetted, even when others can't - as it's targetted.
But either way it's a good tactic to target the ships to prevent the "switch trick".

PS. It's not an exploit or anywhere near it, you aggress the *pilot* not the ship, you should have sucked less mm'kay.
According to my understanding of the EULA and various guide lines (and me being me i've had to aquaint myself quite a bit with it to avoid...more bans) this isn't even in a grey area, it's so legit you can eat off it.
In fact, I bet several gm's are laughing at your petitions right now going "holy shit that is some wicked ass piracy man, we GOTTA try that during the lunch break!".
The only gray area where it becomes an exploit is if someone (else) hops in the ship the victim is shooting. The victim will then get concorded. I've lost 2 or 3 battle haulers to this :( ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

First off you should never use a faction ship... but yeah you know that by now or you knew that the moment two more showed up ;)
It is a simple loop hole because the system sees the gila pilot as a poor person who just lost his ship and is on the way to get a new one to get back at the aggressor. The sad thing is the system as such got used to its limits and kudos to attackers who thought out of the box and made it happen. But my guess is we could possibly see a fix to this loop hole soon as if there are more people using this.

He had communications with a GM. He was in a hauler, canflipped a battleship. The battleship engaged the hauler, the hauler pilot ejected and jumped into a Raven (same exact thing) and popped the battleship pilot.
This was said to be an exploit by that GM.

According to GM Tacgnol, this is not considered an exploit. So two different GM's have conflicting views? Interesting... Do the GM's even communicate? Would you happen to have a GM name?

Ship swapping was considered an exploit for a month or so earlier this year as boarding another player's ship would mask your name in the overview with the name of the ship you boarded e.g. Ibis. Eventually the glitch was fixed and ship swapping was allowed again.

Given that scenario, I don't think the gankers were clever, only ballsy. Had the OP actually understood game mechanics, he could have popped the gila and prevented the Raven from attacking by targeting it.
It worked out in the gankers' favor because the OP was ignorant to certain game mechanics.
Here are some confirmed concepts, use them to decide for yourself:
- If you can legally shoot someone, you can also legally shoot their stuff. This includes, but is not limited to, drones, jet-cans, and un-piloted ships.
- Targeting an un-piloted ship will keep everyone BUT THE OWNER from hopping in it.

This is one of the things I just love/hate about EVE - the total lack of accessible documentation. Yes Galen it's very interesting. It's probably been about a year since I had this happen to me.
On two instances that I recall I was shooting a covetor in my itty5 and the pilot ejected. Another pilot hopped in (I'm still shooting here...) and I was concorded. I learned later that this was an exploit
So there is (or was) something happening with targeting ships and locking people out of them. I can't be bothered to test it and see exactly what the mechanic is, but yes it is (or was) possible.
edit: If you're not following my replies what I type may be confusing. In short: what happened to the OP is not an exploit. However, if someone had hopped into that Gila it would have been. ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

YES 100% exploit. ITS BOARDING SHIPS LEFT IN SPACE. u get banned for that!
this becouse this trick also can be done by automation with a current banneble exploit in game. put up a pos. drop the 3 ships in there. raven, gila, basil. then jet them. they are now all under corp tag. get the gila to find a target. target agresses on gila. warp in the rest :) becouse all 3 ships are under 1 corp tag they cal all 3 join in the fight.
this is exploit of 2 months ago. and read this quick. my last message explaining the original exploit got removed verry quick :) and this is 100% exploit. do not try it u will get into problems --- Somebody needs a hug! |

Again, this was an exploit as boarding other ships in space would mask your name. This 'overview bug' was fixed in build 53162 and as of that patch, this is no longer considered an exploit. Yes there was no official news item regarding this other than just the usual "Several exploit issues have been fixed, making EVE a better world to live in for us all." - though it does not matter as the issue that led to these "tactics" being classed an exploit have been fixed. Petition as much as you like for clarification but you will be told the same thing and you will not get reimbursement.

Originally by: Solomon XI Ok, before I start, I want to say for the record this is not a whine post.
Big deal.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with flying your (faction) faction fit BS into a mission. As long as you keep it mostly pvp fit that is.. omni tank and web at least. If it can handle pvp it can handle a mission just as well. Also keep a friend close that can provide you with cans of boostercharges to keep your rep etc. going..if you just keep tanking them and perhaps damage them for what it's worth they'll call it a loss and bug off. Can you clarify here? If you got a CONCORD warning trying to shoot the ejected Gila this is a bug, and if by sheer luck it left server side evidence you may have some ground to ask for reimbursement.
If you only thought that you could not shoot it, well, take it as an expensive lesson in aggression mechanics.

In the meantime, you fail.
Yep. That pretty much explains it. I was expecting to engage a Gila and only a Gila. Wasn't expecting this at all.
And said Gila was orbiting me with a MWD. My tracking was good. But not THAT good. Lol.
Was fail on my part for bringing out the Mega. I know this.
You could of just went, hey mission loot isn't worth risking my 400mil + ship. ----------------------------

stupid question hehe
what about using this to avoid fight? lets say your getting pwned and you're scrambled.
couldn't you eject which now the aggressor has to turn off scram and offensive mods or get concorded. now reboard and warp off if you had the ship aligned or whatnot before attempting.
curious.

That's not quite how it works.
I start shooting you..you eject. I can still blow the ship up because it still belongs to you. You can re-board the ship if you want. But I don't have to stop shooting it. (ps: this is how you can extend aggro almost indefinately..think about what *other* things a pilot might own that you can shoot while he's not present...)
Now...while I have your ship scrambled, nobody else can board it but you. (getting rid of the 'I got concorded exploit' that was out there for a while) So I can choose to keep it locked (for eject ransoms) and wait for a pilot.
So no..you're doing it wrong. I figured that the university would know and teach rules of aggression, methods of saving your hide, and actually have it correct. Instead of asking here like a nub. --

they do :) i was just looking for some abuse way to shake agro :) metagaming ftw hehe
I probably should drop the tag :P been around a bit long anyhow
was just curious about abusing eject like abusing insta warps to grief the griefers :)
since the OP said that when the guy ejected he couldnt fire on the gila or he'd get concorded. So if thats the case If I eject you cannot keep the ship scram'd or you get concorded if the OP was telling truth

Originally by: Solomon XI Ok, before I start, I want to say for the record this is not a whine post.
Sounds completely fair to me.
I used to use that trick to pop hulks in empire with Ogdru Jahad.

He should have been able to shoot the ejected Gila (that the logistics could have kept alive anyway). The CONCORD stuff is likely mis comprehension of game mechanics on the OP part. -- I'm done whining about AFs, it looks like they are making them right \o/ |

Originally by: Siigari Kitawa This was deemed an exploit by a GM my friend told me about.
Edit: I did petition this. And was told it was not an exploit.
next time convo me ingame if u have problems with a petition. i can help translate gm messages and help you form a direct and stable return message.
basicly the first step gm's is telling you there is nothing they can do. honestly this makes the gm look like a idiot but it works. you accept the gm's holy word and forget it. cleans up 90% of the que :)
what you should have done is ask for a gm2. i always ask for gm2 when the first gm shows lack of knowlage.
and the news item about the can flip board ship trick was in the news. but they didnt want to tell the world. so it was kinda cryptic and not clear what clasified under the exploit.
this clearly was the same exploit. but instead of ship it was the player that changed. could have been direct effect of the patch even.
anyway what you can do is make a new petition start it again. gm will directly tell you that hes sorry bla bla bla. gm will also tel you that ship loss of 2 weeks ago is not posible.
what you can tell the gm directly is that petitions sometimes take longer then 2 months so it is posible. and the original petition was handled badly and incored.
if you keep whineing and whineing gm's will give up becouse they fialed at the first petition witch was handled the wrong way.
then you get your ship back with less fitting and i think you should be happy with that.
ps. : you could get a ban warning for posting gm's petition returns.

I didn't copy anything directly from the petition. I merely quoted a small portion of the petition, in my own words, by an anonymous GM. Ban isn't likely. Rules are meant to be bent, not broken.
Really though, from what I've picked up, it was a lack of understanding as far as that particular game-mechanic worked. Was an expensive lesson but well worth it. |

And there it is. Out of the mouth of the OP.
That's what they did, they bent a rule. Kudos i say. And thanks also to the OP for highlighting this tactic. |
