Edited by: XirtamVotf on 12/06/2004 17:10:02 Edited by: XirtamVotf on 12/06/2004 17:09:31 SA and CA engaged today in U-Q and the game was rather unplayable. There were around 56 players in local all together. Mods would not respond for alot of players, including SA players. Players were dropped during battle, and targetting was a task at least. The lag was worse than before the upgrade with less players in the fight. Both group leaders agreed that we would constructively address CCP about this, can CCP respond ? The lag was so bad that both leaders agreed upon a cease fire.

To add my first hand account of what happened, i have a pretty solid connection and beefy PC, and i exerienced the lag also, but i could still fight effectivly. A corp m8 wasn't so fortunate, he was destroyed with no control whatsoever because of this said lag.

Due to the insane lag, modules not turning on, etc, the leaders of SA and CA agreed to a 2 hour cease fire.
This has to be the first time in history that these two sides have agreed to something. ;)
This cease fire alone should give CCP some kind of indication as to the problems involved with the current servers. -- Intergalactic Teeth Pullers "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." Albert Einstein |

I agree with XirtamVotf here. This is not the first time it happens. I've seen a battle where I freezed like half of fleet for 30 seconds... And then unplayable lag with modules not coming online etc... For the same amount of pilots or even less.
Lag is still bad in eve. CCP must do something

The problems seem to be getting worse with the upgrades, not better. I was firing at zeal dragon and had him at 60% shields then I fired for 2 mins without any bullets leaving my gun and finally had to relog because nothing was responding.

i was flying a raven in this battle and sat quite far away from the gate. The lag was massive and although i was able to keep in the fight it was taking a long time to target and near impossible to reload missiles.

I was at the fight in U-Q and lost my Typhoon due to lag. I warped in and tried to switch on my modules with no success. They just started to come on line as my ship disintegrated. I have been in battles previous to the server upgrade and it was never this bad. Proud member of Curse Alliance |

yes i have to agree with xirtan on this one. I was taken damage from 3 bs in my BB when my mwd decide to go offline just as i was trying to warp out. Also i could not reload my missile launchers. Not really a good state to be in in a fleet battle. ___________________________________________________

My PC setup is.
AMD athlon XP+2800, 1.5 Gb DDRram(3200).
256 MB ddr ram Nvidia Graphic card.
My connection is a cable con,1024/512
I have no bottlenecks on this PC.
I have always experienced somekind of lag in this game, when engaging in large fleetbattles, but never have i had this kind of lag.
I always run multiple programs in the baclground when playing. programs like fraps, and webbrowsers, and Firewall protection.
But at this specifik battle, since i had noticed an increase in lag when fighting, i had closed all my background programs, the only program i had running was my mem monitor.
during the battle i had no mem or package loss.
I warped in at 60km, tried to aquirre locks on enemies, and turn my ship around. I was flying a tempest in this battle. Not one of my modules did respond, my screen totally froze, and did first clear up, when i was in my pod.
Now pods are extremly agile and warp instantly, but in fleetbattles pods also experience lag, i was dead in 20 seconds, Normally i can hold myself in any battle, but this was so sewere, that i would have been better of just blowing my own ship up.
Its not loosing a ship, ships can be replaced, but the lag has to go.
I hope CCP, reads this, as we all love this game and want to have fun.

To me the game is showing a general sense of laginess all togheter. I am sometimes spending 5 minutes to log in (with DSL), and this isnt after a server reboot.
At oen point I was at a gate by mself, and I clicked down to fly that direction, and my ship started going down, then up, like when a movie is stuck in a loop, and after abotu 30 seconds my ship started to do what it was supposed to do. 60 or so in local, no combat going on, at the gate by myself.

I think is still client lag though, not so much lag of the servers anymore, yes you do have a fairly powerful pc, mine is even more so, however in large fleet engagements I still get **** poor frame rates, Think about it though, Rendering all them ships, missiles, turretfire, tracking the movement of turrets, some serious calculations goin on there... Basically its not gonna go unless the implement a feature of the game not drawing the ships and just showing brackets(which kinda defeats the object)
I dont think its gonna go away tbh. Sass Arcane Technologies |

I suspect that they have made something with the code, maybe put in something for upcomming patch.

This is not to flame CCP, but help CCP understand what the players are experiancing. I have a high end machine and also never had this bad of a problem. I really love this game, and want to see it grow, not see people leave out of frustration. I think that most veteran players would not have stayed this long if we didnt love this game. So this should be a constructive manner in which you address CCP to make it better for players.

I just reactivated my account this past week, and I have been getting tremendous lag spikes with my dsl, and this happens when I'm alone in a system. I have a solid PC, gig of ddr ram radeon 9800 pro, updated drivers and ill just freeze for a good 30 seconds a few times a day. It didnt do this when i played months ago, at least not as often, but it sure makes traveling in 0.0 riskier, and makes u pray when engaged in battle that u don't get b|tch slapped by the lag monster.

From what I have seen the newest CCP actions have moved some load from servers to the Clients, this I notice has increased the harddrive activity on my computer and created an non existing before bottleneck regarding HD on my computer. So you guys experiencing a newly added lag , check your HD load while lags occur to check this.

We also experienced that hellish "can't reload, can't do anything" lag in 9-266Q during the first battle against UNICOR. It was really frustrating, I could move my raven from system to system (even tho it took ages to jump and warp) but everytime I tried to reload or use a module nothing happened.
Could there be a way to allocate server resources dynamically so that resources are allocated depending on the amount of ships in a system? If this is already the case, it is not working in a stellar fashion

Lag was so bad during this engagement that i could not even rotate the camera or lock anything, only person i could engage was the one who locked me first, other people locked me and i was not aware of it until i read the logs. No target boxes ever appeared on my screen.
warping away in my pod resulted in "warp drive active" staying on screen for the duration of the battle but my pod never left the battle scene. i was able to watch the battle while not actually being there (cant have been as nobody podded me) i had to request warp about 3 times and eventually warp to a gang member before the battle scene left my screen.
i have a decent system and run much more graphical games than EVE, such as FPS shooters (BF:V etc)

Here is my 2 cents worth.
I have logged calls with CPP about the lag as well...Well this is the answer that they gave me...
"I am sorry for not have detected your problem earlier. Your problem is connected to your Internet Service Provider. You can see it in your tracert.txt file where there is a jump from c.a 30 ms to 650 ms between routing nodes. There is something extremely wrong with that connection and there is nothing we can do about it from here. You will need to connect your ISP. I hope they will be able to solve your problem and get you up and running as soon as possible."

let me see, everyone across several continents has ISP problems as explained there. No its not EVE at all.
not a coincidence that the server "upgrades" happened at the same time this problem became worse, nope not a chance.
not to mention that its only EVE that presents problem.
But still, must be everyones ISP.

Their is something in the the way the clientside interacts with EVE, as I am no programmer i cannot get closer to it than that.

There is a missunderstanding.
CA and SA did not agreed to stop fighting each other. We agreed on a 2 hours cease fire for fleet battles and a free passage for the CA fleet back from U-Q to HLW. Both parties fought well again.
This cease fire was over today at 19:00 EVE time. The numbers posted in an earlier reply aren't correct, like usual.

id like to reply to this thread but it took 2 minutes to load the forums, go figure.
i lost my ship before this engagement but we experianced the exact same problems. i cant agree that its my isp cuz everything else i do, i have not problems with.
heres my 2cents from another thread.
I lost my apoc in a fleet battle in system qsm few days ago and after the new upgrade.
the lag was so bad that i was dead before i even saw that i was taking damage. from the logs 5 people were pounding on me and yet there was no indication id been targeted. i had my main target, a secondary cruiser target and that was it. i have target set up so that when im targeted, i target back. so i should have had warning that i had a ton of people shooting at me.
from what i can tell my shield modules never fired, my armor repair modules never fired, i never even moved enough to warp out. no one was close enough to scramble me. from the log, i cant even tell if my guns had ever fired when we engaged.
and yes, i have a fast system, cable modem, blah, blah , blah. typically, i can run my two accounts with np. after this last upgrade, i can barely run one. since i got bounced back to empire im finding that entering space from a station is extremely slow, jumping in is slow, ect, ect.
id fully have to agree that this has something to do with the upgrade as things worked ok before and now they dont.
im not a uber PVP pilot but i know when to get my ass out, how to keep it together in fleet combat. im chalking this one up to a lag kill.
and i hope ccp fixes the damn fix they just put on us. lc

Well the fight tonight seemed to go allright... even tho to warp away you had to log off and log back on, and if u jumped through a system with over 50+ people in you'd have to log off and back on to get to see what your doing...
During my time in CA iv found out that if you log off and log back on in a system with alot of players that the server allocates you enough packets to make sure you get the optimum performance in that system... to me it seems thats kinda b0rked in the system allocation configuration... mayby somewhere to look at CCP?

Here is a recap of my playing days in eve to date. When i was on my 10 day trial i never was booted once and only saw minor lag. lag is a part of mmorpg. beit client side or server side. BUT what i have experienced can only be explained as headen down hill. right after my trial we got the new hardware was starting to be released. lag started worse then ever i could expect to be kicked to desktop every 10 jumps or so. then as time went on it has become unbearable. now me sayen that ill also admit i have a pos puter. but friends and corp mates i have hunted with notice the same thing. Last nite i was podded. Lag struck i could only hear sounds of the battle. Lag ends and im in a shiney new pod. i hafta agree this is on the part of ccp. had it been like this during my trial i doubt i would have bought the game, but im addicted now so ive just come to the realization i bettter stock up on ships Ripp Tyde F.R.E.E.E. Did anyone run tracerts during the lag spike?
If some intermediary router (geographically close to wherever CCP's server is) that happens to be on all players' routes to TQ was having a bad day, this *might* not be CCPs, or the hardware upgrades' fault. It would be CCP's own ISPs fault, perhaps.
I wasn't there, of course, though I'm just presenting another possibility. One that is probably wrong.

You know I've had about enough of these CCP "its your own fault" type answers. It's not like there's only one or two people having these problems.
If I order a pizza and they deliver it cold, they don't have to start whining how they were stuck in traffic or that their motorbike broke down, wich isn't their fault because someone else made the bike, I ain't paying.
If CCP think I'm gonna keep paying to play a game under these circumstanses they must be smoking more pot then I already thought they were.

This is not an occasionally lag spike we are talking about, its in there everyday.
Something is wrong, we have talked about this for months, some say its clientside.
One thing i can say for sure, i have had no decrease in lag since the hardwareupgrade, on the contrary, it has become worse.
One of the participiants in this tread said, work around it, adapt, fly in samller groups, I can say, that even small battles 3v3 lags so horrible, that it is not an option, Another one saidd their is always lag in an online game, well thats true, untill now i have been in hundreds of battles, never lagged out before in my life. Yes i had lag but not as severe that i couldnt function in the game.
Before anyone says, upgrade your system, I have a pc constructed for gaming, a very powerfull one, i have a superb cable connection.
During the fleetbattle last night, i had no mem loss and no package loss whatsoever.
The only background program i was running was my mem monitor, Why did i have that running, well it seems that in addition to lag, EVE also tends to have severe memloss sometimes. but not last night.
I love to lay eve, its the best online game out there, i hope CCP sees this, because we the players also want to contribute to this great game.
But when you cannot play, the game you want, then its somewhat without a purpose to be here. So Say I. Einheriar Ulrich of the Bloodline of Einheriar.

well look at ccp's side for this problem. Due to the complexity they wont have no clue what is actually causing the lag. It can be a routing prob a server hardware prob or it can be somewhere in the code.
If it's in the code you prolly wont see no official statement that they gonna fix it, cause they damn now as well that it would take too long to find the bugs, and there is a big chance they will never find whats wrong.

Network lag and ISP have nothing to do with that! In fact, EVE is incredibly lag proof - you can have bearable game experience even with 25% PACKET LOSS! 650 ms is uber ping, EVE isn't bloody Quake where you need ~50ms!

I mean honestly id hate to say i lost every battle due to lag. sounds like a lame excuse. but so far every time i have lost a ship or was pk'd it was due to lag. and that really sux. what needs is a much much better level of detail system
Not just have the ships apear and disapear, have various models for each ship each with different polygon counts. The high poly ships should have the shading but the low poly ones should not. This is all about the cliant at this moment.

only lag i get , as far as i can tell, is caused by my computer. i have a p4 2.4 1 gig ram and a gf4 ti4600 , not the best system but should be able to handle eve decently. and it usually does, but when i enter systems with lots of people sittin at the gate, or when we are bs chaining, my computer locks for like 30 seconds, hard locks , memory usage shoots up super high, cpu usage shoots up to 100% and doesn't move, and u can hear it thinkin about something, tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick for 30 seconds to 1 min. this has caused me to die more then once, warp in, get the lag, y hello thar nice pod.

Your system should be able to run much more graphicaly intense games such as UT or BF:V for example, never mind EVE.
However your "tick tick tick tick" problem is probably quite serious. Your hard drive is most likley dying, i would replace it ASAP and backup your data before it completly fails on you!
It could be something else but if it only happens at certain times like you said its your HDD. i cant tell for definate without actually hearing it for myself. while your at it clean all your fans out... if it still does it then its definately a hdd about to die.

Yeah this was crazy....my first experience in a really large battle...I had no lag when i jumped into the system..warped to a safespot to find out where needed. I then warped to the battle....a scene that was locked on my screen for at least 45 seconds...didnt see ships......just a sky FULL of missiles...then next frame i saw a megathron locked onto me...then i saw him fire on me....then i saw another shot..and then i was in a shiny pod..which i never saw..only could tell because the interface changed at the bottom....then the message that ship is out of control...then woke up in a clone station. maybe10-12 frames total were displayed over a 2 minute period. This is insane, and totally unplayable by me...and dont let them say its my PC stats either, because while a bit old my system is at least 4 times better than the minimum req. stated on the box....I never had this problem running 2 accounts mining or whatnot....or even smaller battles (40-50 ships) in the past. I really want to be active in the PVP aspect of the game....IF I am able to. Please fix this problem CCP...this many people from all over the world cant be wrong....the finances must be there to fix it. ~TJ

as side note to this i was wondering how many people have expirienced an increase in client crashes due to their server node going off line?
as for the lag in the vast majority of cases it has to be server side, i guessing most here have a system more than capable of running eve, i myself have a 64bit ath 2gig of ram and a 9800pro, my connection has never been problem, its seems glaringly obvious that the recent hardware upgrade hasnt gone as smoothly as hoped and is causing a problem, most alliance players have seen action in large battles, and also have risked a jump in on a camp, we know risks and we decide to take them based on what we think is a chance of a victory, but atm there noone prepared to take that risk and who can blame them, i guess we have to hope things get better.
a little bit of info from ccp on the recent hardware upgrade and ongoing work/problems related to it would be nice tho, if only to give players encouragement to stick with eve and look forward to a less laggy expirience.
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |

CCP does not care for people saying the performance is bad or good for a few, they are interested in CPU load, the load balancing on the servers and having an enviroment that is stable for the whole community. Even if that part only mine's and spends 50% of the time they play afk or using mining macro's.
Every battle over 20 players in the same grid still lags you to death, irrelevant is how much cpu, patches or servers are installed. The performance is still rather weak. Now i think most of us here can understand CCP having problems to get the new equipment running like it should, but a lack of communication is what upset most of us. - - -

Guys, let's see how ANY fps based game server like:
Quake 1-2-3 Halflife BF 1942/Vietnam
can hold up 100+ gamers shooting 10-20 projectiles constantly on 1 server (since 1 server consists of more than 1 system i count 100+).
The server may be able to keep it up but YOUR pc won't because it has to render it. Especially the guys with NVidia cards :)

Hmm not true. I have been around since day one in this game. I have always swered to Nvidia cards, never had any problems. My PC is a highend gaming machine.
I have been through all the patches, and i have played since beta.
When the community and most of the players in this tread are old timers say the lag has grown worse, try to listen instead of playing smart.
The lag has grown worse this last month. Situations that never have lagged before are showing up, even small skirmishes are lagging like its 50v50 players.
The Lag i experienced in UQ that night was very very bad ask around and you will see.

Cardassius sorry mate but you dont know what your talking about in this case, did you bother to read the thread at all ?. This has nothing to do with client lag UNLESS to do with the way it connects to EVE. Alot of the complaints are also to do with small engagemants 6 ships and lower. And this matters how? We are playing EVE. The only thing that makes EVE worth playing is pvp. Pvp often involves large groups of players shooting.
The game should be able to handle it. It if it isn't EVE simply won't be worth playing any longer.

Not been playing the new Joint Operations:Typhoon Rising Demos then? Their servers max out at 200+ (in beta testing) and around 120 in public servers, so it is possible, whats more, JO's optomised for dial-up modem play (apparently), so you can get decent (50+) numbers even on a naff connection. Rather spoiled your point now haven't I, sorry
Of course, thats only network lag. By the time you get to those numbers you ARE going to get graphics lag, and because of the nature of EVE, you can always see (and so render) the entire battle, whereas FPS you can only see a small section of it.
The solution would prosumably be to have different quality gradients depending upon camera distance from an object. Also all the other options to lower quality/turn effects off etc that people have already mentioned.

Regarding CLIENT lag: Try to have as few Guiwindows open as possible. for example chats, cargo, scanner, etc. whatever you dont need close. Run in fullscreen, it performs a lot better. If that is still not enough, there is the chance of CTRL-TAB (hide all gui windows).
512MB Ram for one client is a possible hardware upgrade if you dont have or even a 9600Pro for ~110€.

I see a lot of people making suggestions that are meant to be helpful, but I also see tons of experienced people from several regions, on opposite sides of a couple of very serious wars, agreeing on one thing only, their experience of battles, especially larger ones, being totally unplayable.
This is my experience as well. My last fleet battle was a few days after the upgrades and lag was HIDEOUS, as bad warping to a gate battle as it used to be pre-castor jumping into a mined and droned JIP. Unplayable is an understatement. Very soon (if not already) nobody with sense is going to join these large battles, which account for a significant portion of ôstorylineö, at least for the moment in EVE. How are we going to resolve conflicts, binding arbitration? Scordite mining competitions? [/sarcasm]
Please CCP, fix this. WhatÆs the point in mega corps and alliances if we canÆt fight in large groups?

The thing that really gets me on this thread, is that not one CCP representative has even replyed to this topic.

I've been in many large fleet battles and to be REALLY honest the only lag i experience is my video lag, yea it takes me like 10-15 secs to load the 8349573498573 objects floating around before i am fully functional, but other than that its on my side as far as all the **** in space im having to render and such. Havnt really expereinced server side lag but maybe like a total of 10 times. And as far as lagging like hell in a 3vs3 battle uuummmmmm that is unheard of to me, theres something wiggin out or something, 3vs3 and lagging like that makes no sense i just dont see that being on CCP's end, i dont see how it could be but i dont know anything just what i hear and experience, just wierd though! Oveur has allready been made aware of the problem, and CCP now know about the lag issue. Thank you CCP for looking into this.
This way we can get back on track, and continue to make this the best online game ever.
The thing that gets me about these threads is the ppl that dont read them properly. CCP have answered as per Einherars post above... Get with the program ppl
