Originally by: Chorizo Chorizo Im sorry to whine at everyone but I was someone who was raised with manners.
Every where I go I see people cursing each other out, last night I asked for a fight with someone in Amarr and was called right off the bat.
I can always block people but its getting to the point where everywhere I go I see people just vulgar nasty language.
I know its the internet and all that stuff and we need to be thick skinned etc.
I really wish I can time travel to eve 2 years ago where the population quality was more adult like.
I can envision eve in 2 years from now being one big jita.
Will be people spamming and cursing everyone out everywhere.
Nice troll...
I mean, jeez... 4 years ago I saw some real fun where language was concerned... ATUK and Shinra had some guys who could REALLY throw the smack-talk... so I don't know what the heck you're on about only 2 years ago.
Have fun blocking most of EVE... because I suspect that's where you're headed with this.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 15/09/2008 17:22:52 The only time I've ever actually gotten mad over a chat convo in Eve didn't include any profanity at all. It was more like me and another guy, the both of us obstinate in our refusal to concede any point of superiority to the other's argument, droning back and forth in local for like twenty minutes. Or it seemed that long. Probably wasn't more than five or ten in reality.
Profanity-laden chat is just funny.

Sigh. Swear words are just another way to express ideas. There is nothing that should be offensive about them. If it bothers you, then the problem resides between keyboard and chair.

Op.
Do yourself a favour, steer clear of high sec mission/trade hubs, most of the people that do and sadly can are little more than attention seeking to the masses. It is fair to say though that it's the few that make lots of noise, most say nothing, some like me just block, few again join in.
Quiet high sec systems, low sec ect, you will find in general more polite people.
As for in general, there's just more people out there, there's allways been the people that do, huh funny somebody should mention shinra/atuk, it's not wise that i repeat the incident here, but after an hour of tasteless jokes about minors (im sure you understand what i mean) they were petitioned, sadly each and everyone of them continued to log and carry on talking.
One of the saddest situations iv'e ever come across in this game, and one of the reasons i started to lose total faith in ccp.

Agreed. The language is deteriorating and there is no reason for it. It's pathetic and childish. Too bad thats the way things go...

to the op: stfu. eve is a harsh universe if you cannot stomach the language then perhaps you should visit the link at the bottom of this post as their game has a built in swear filter.

My buddy got a 24 hour gag on his main because I closed a private convo unexpectedly and he wound up going on about my man parts in 'Help' instead.
Don't know about swearing tbh, ive always though the best smack talk was pillow talk.

I smack because: 1. It's fun for me and funny for whoever's with me. 2. Angry people make mistakes, and will often make HORRIBLE tactical decisions because they want to "get back" at you, and then they die.
If you don't like it, petition them.

Originally by: Roc Wieler This phrase sums it up for me, and is in line with what a few others are saying.
"Swearing is but a crutch upon which uneducated people lean to express themselves."
I don't agree with this at all. I, and probably most other EVE players, have a perfectly good command of my language, yet I still choose to swear because it might be the most fitting word for the application. Why should I say 'I'm rather vexed, due to losing my Vexor' when I could sum it up perfectly with just four letters, 'F*ck!'. In my/our culture this expresses how I feel much more effectively and accurately that say 'Darn it!' for example.
(I hope I didn't misspell any of that or I'm f*cked...)
edit: missed an 'I' out! &%#@^*^%!

Originally by: Ishina Fel To me, bad language is a sign of low intelligence.
I don't care who uses it, what people they are IRL, what their actual IQ is, or how old they are. If someone levels personal attacks at me, I stop regarding them as a human being, and will from then on treat them like a spam email.
This is the insult I return them for their vocal insults. Most of them never notice, and never feel insulted, but that is not the point. The real point shows itself when those same people come around suddenly needing something from me or my friends a few months later
To me, insulting someone is simply a tool to use to kill them. If it takes a little bit of vulgarity to get them to undock so I can pod them, so be it. Quite frankly it rarely takes any actual swearing on my part to goad someone into making a mistake, but sometimes (as an example, people like yourself) it is the most effective way of offending someone.
Make them mad, keep them off balance and then kill them. I regard people who make blanket judgments about other people who they don't know to have little to no intelligence and anyone who bases their assumptions on a small amount of contact over an internet spaceship game's local chat channel (or anything similar) is at the bottom of that pile.

Calling it "adult" language doesn't make it so. Puerile smacktalk in local remains puerile smacktalk in local. I don't find it offensive so much as tedious and rather pathetic. Adults (of whatever age) don't need to posture and e-preen like that.
So yeah, I'd like the community to be more adult too.
