Im sorry to whine at everyone but I was someone who was raised with manners.
Every where I go I see people cursing each other out, last night I asked for a fight with someone in Amarr and was called right off the bat.
I can always block people but its getting to the point where everywhere I go I see people just vulgar nasty language.
I know its the internet and all that stuff and we need to be thick skinned etc.
I really wish I can time travel to eve 2 years ago where the population quality was more adult like.
I can envision eve in 2 years from now being one big jita.
Will be people spamming and cursing everyone out everywhere.

First off, love chorizo sausages, amazing things.
Second off, Im a very mature 26 year old law school grad who feels the need to swear like a dirty sailor, at times, in local.
It can be a very emotional game when everything's riding on the line. I believe that warrants some highly volatile langauge. ----------------- Friends Forever |

Its a video game. I'm not going to curtail my language as if I'm at work while I'm playing a game. Granted, there's a fine line when enough is enough but if someone drops the occassional F-bomb here and there or whatever its not a big deal.

Doesn't eve have an 'adault rating'?
dont get me wrong, racial and religous comments are teh no-no, but surely you can critisise people using colorfull language?
Personally i run a no-smak policy becuase its good for buiseness, but in an adualt rated game you must expect this?

Chorizo,
No point in using colourful language if no one is going to be offended by it.
Thank you for filling such a valuable role in life.

Must... resist... asking what... you are now...
On a more serious note. Yes, there are many tools in the Verse. Yes, said tools make a lot of racket. Unfortuanally trying to put a filter on the internet is like trying to defend FEMA post Katrina, its just not possiable.
How else do you think we ended up cursed with 1337 speek? I blame filters. -----------------------------------------------

To me, bad language is a sign of low intelligence.
I don't care who uses it, what people they are IRL, what their actual IQ is, or how old they are. If someone levels personal attacks at me, I stop regarding them as a human being, and will from then on treat them like a spam email.
This is the insult I return them for their vocal insults. Most of them never notice, and never feel insulted, but that is not the point. The real point shows itself when those same people come around suddenly needing something from me or my friends a few months later

Edited by: Qordel on 15/09/2008 15:46:46 As an adult, I speak however the **** I like. As an adult, you're free to block me. I have no interest in seeing every "naughty" word across every language and different societies filtered or prevented online.
You're correct that people are adults and as adults we live in a world where people can say whatever they like and we don't run around crying and tattling.
Really, who in the hell are you to dictate whether someone can utter curse words and vulgarities or not? This isn't Hello Kitty Online. This isn't a Disney game. You're not better than anyone else simply because you think certain words are "naughty". Good for you. I don't care.
I'm extremely offended by racist and homophobic remarks -- here and elsewhere. Now that truly is offensive. Words chosen to convey thoughts are not particularly offensive unless you're used to being daddy's pretty little princess and chastising people for choosing more colorful language. What is truly offensive (other than telling people how to talk) is hateful language. You can spread your homophobic and racist tripe without using any vulgarities whatsoever.
I really wish I could time travel to some period in the future where someone doesn't get their panties in a twist because someone says the F word. Not to mention, I can't wait to live in a world where the greatest catastrophe facing mankind is offending people by saying sh*t instead of "p00py" (which I find far more offensive for the sheer stupidity of the word).
So, in short, I don't give a **** if you were raised with manners. I was raised with free speech and the expectation that in return for my freedom to say what I like, I am expected not to prevent other people from saying what they like. Even if it's something I don't particularly care for.
As for vulgarity being a sign of low intelligence? I find that the most unintelligent people tend to be the ignorant twits who go around wasting their energy giving a damn how other adults speak. Just because you swear up a storm when you're at a bar or watching a game with some mates doesn't mean that your typical conversation consists of the same language.
Frankly, if you think that leveling such insults or judgments against us for our choice of colorful language bothers us in the least -- it does not. Not one iota. Such a person is clearly so unbelievably up-tight that they'd suck the joy out of any situation. Really, what could be a sign of lower intelligence than giving a damn what language other people use, anyway? And even more, whining about it on forums. Were yout he kid who ran to mommy and daddy if another kid said something on the playground? I don't doubt it.
Now, if you had been criticizing the actual DISCUSSIONS in Eve, I might be more likely to side with you. I don't care if someone talks about what a terrible F-ing day they had dealing with mother-F-ing gatecampers.
On racist and anti-gay hatespeech and other mindless, hateful, ignorant soap-boxing -- I would entirely agree with your disdain for it. However, you didn't say anything about that and were more concerned with people not conducting themselves as they would in the sunday-school class you apparently teach when you're not on Eve. Fortunately, I have found those topics to be rarer in Eve than elsewhere (thank the holy flying spaghetti monster for that!).

I'm sick of people not using the apostrophe mark and starting all their sentences with 'I'
Seriously though, I don't like to see it that much either, but it's a free world; If the language bothers you this greatly just ignore local. Sorry to sound harsh but I'd rather they didn't dumb down the adult sandbox we play in, because you feel sensitive when someone calls you names.

Nope teen, but of course "Online interaction not rated by the ESRB".
But it means that if you do say very adult stuff you will get your bottie smacked if you are reported.

I don't see the point in actually using "naughty words" when you can be far more descriptive using Shakespearean insults.

This phrase sums it up for me, and is in line with what a few others are saying.
"Swearing is but a crutch upon which uneducated people lean to express themselves."
Doesn't matter what age you are, what rating the game is, it all comes down to lack of ability to communicate in any other way.
For me, I find it disappointing because I enjoy RP. I play my character. If you're in my fleet and you're cursing needlessly, you aren't in my fleet for long.
