The problem is that the internet is full of imbeciles. What you see as encouragement for mild harassment, lots will see as a demand that they immediately go and petrol bomb his house. You have to be really careful with what you say on the internet because people WILL take it out of context and things will go downhill quickly.

Boom This is why you exercise CONTROL. Once competant authority peels back enough layers, they'll come to realize CCP has only exercised token control and in very arbitrary ways. This adds up to IRRESPONSIBILITY, something the authorities frown upon. Suffice to say CCP is now engaged in damage control 'cause they let their little attack puppy off the leash. Smokestack lightnin' shinin' just like gold.

There is a line - where ever that may be is part of the subject of the debate - and CCP needs a policy that consistently enforces it. I've said this over and over - I've no problem with the Goons in game - in fact their gaming goals, the desire to burn Jita, it's all good for the game. But what we saw at the Alliance Panel, what we see daily on forums, what Alexander Gianturco himself has allegedly been subject to (death threats to his dog) - all of it is showing a far shadier side to EVe than we want or need. It's time this was properly worked out.

When you play EVE for years you will find out that a lot of people are addicted to this game and play EVE for a living. Some put a huge and insane effort into a second virtual life. I am 100% sure that these guys take such a call extremely serious. It's like working in creative business. Skills and talent will become be a part of your personality the more successful you are. If you fail at work you might get depressed because you believe that work, skills and talent are the most important thing in your life. A char, the ISK and all your stuff in EVE have a value. They are not pure virtual goods for free. EVE is not a game. EVE is work. And the more you play and work for it, the more you collect and the more you are a part of the community or finally a leader of a corp or big alliance the more this game will mix up with your RL-personality and you start to fly to Island to behave like a celebrity.

People lie about killing themselves often, most don't follow through. People tell others that they don't like that they should kill themselves all the time, or drink bleach, or play in traffic. Why is this different? Because the person claims they are unstable, we should tip toe around them like walking on glass? I'm sensitive to people disagreeing with me and I'll hang myself if someone does!

Harassment in game (regardless of someone's mental state) always comes with the option of walking away. A death threat doesn't. I'm not justifying what Mittens did but those two events are not comparable. And let's just let this dead horse lie already.
