Do you have the Ore strip miners?
If you take time to code something it needs to be useful so that players use it. If they do make a faction Hulk, then I hope it will have a better tank for 0.0 mining; as is we need deadspace gear to tank the 0.0 belts.
No, my indy character doesnt have the ORE strips, hes got an HX-2 and a michi's, and with command bonus does 1960m3 or thereabouts, with 22k range... the ore strips would be quite a bit less yield, even if the range was better, and with me, yield is biblical, add on to that the 600 to 800 mil price tag for three of them and I can easily pass on them and not feel like i missed out on anything. I also agree on the tank being better on a faction hulk. Ive tanked 0.0 rats, and its not easy with a t2 set up. Again, your talking over a quarter of a bil for a gist a type booster alone, add in faction hardeners etc... not something i want to turn over to the guy that catches me napping in a 0.0 belt... however, if a faction hulk had better resists, and could tank the 0.0 rats with t2 gear... well then, the hulk would blow up, leaving only the t2 mods that are cheap for them to scrounge out of the wreckage.. in which case, i could live with the loss :P

Hey Chribba, is it a high-sec mining command ship/hauler/freighter, what? I guess you don't know. I can't be arsed to read the entire other thread, so please feel free to speculate ;).

My personal take, and based on dev responses, is that the Orca is intended as a hisec mining support ship, meaning essentially a mining hauling vessel. With a 250k cargo capacity, and the ability to haul and empty cans, it becomes a bigger version of a mining hauler, although not as big as a freighter. I'm planning to use it instead of a freighter.

The only official response has been that its primary function will be as a transition between transports and freighters. Filling the gap between the 900k and 40k cargo space holdings.
Everything else is just speculation at this point. |

Let me speculate that the T1 version will be a simple big hauler and the T2 version will be the mining foreman ship.

A bughunter linked it somewhere on test server, its just not seeded yet and the info isnt finished yet(like the description and picture, but the required skills were already there and so were the stats). ------------------------------------------

Not that you could necessarily go on it, as it is obviously not final, it is basically the same skill reqs as the rorqual, minus the jump drive stuff. It filters down to training Capital Industrial Ships to I, and you meet the req's.
The stats on SiSi are obviously not complete, the material req's are not set, the capacity is only showing 20,000m¦, with no corp hanger, and oly 2 low slots, so that obviously won't fill the gap they are trying to fill... what I'm saying is, take them with a grain of salt for now. There's still montsh to go until the expansion.

No fair I speculated that first.
But really, it's the only way.
To fill the 'small freighter' role, it has to be much cheaper than a normal freighter. In order for it to fill the 'mining support' role, it would either need to be very heavily nerfed, or somewhere in price between a freighter and a rorqual.
I can't see how you can do this with the one ship without failing horribly at one role or the other.

the textures you see there are provisional ones so we could continue with our prototyping internally. A blog about the orca complete with high res screenshots of the complete new model will be coming out hopefully sometime this week.

Edited by: McFly on 22/10/2008 10:13:39 The Orca from my research (all from test server/SQL Dump) is not going to be a bigger cargoholding rorqual. From what I can tell it will process ore, have foreman link bonuses and etc.
The key point I see in it's use in empire is going to be for compressing and processing in systems that have no stations. You will still most likely see haulers running to these babies in the belt to grab the processed ore, drop of fuel and head to the nearest station hub.
I plan on implementing one for Ice Mining. Hopefully it's cargohold will allow that. There's no station in the system and I have a Highsec pos there for mining ops. It will be interesting (once it hits SiSi) to see how many Mackinaws a single Orca can support.
Looking forward to that blog CCP.

I believe Chronitis mentioned that the info on the test server is old placeholder info, and in no real way reflects the actual ship. So far, the only 'real' information is the model itself, which was found in the patch, and the word from Chronitis that it will fill the gap between haulers and freighers (cargo wise). This just accentuates the point that the 20,000m¦ cargo hold listed on the test server is FAR from accurate.

thats actually one of the better designed ships ive seen in this game, at least as far as looks. I like the 6 (storage?) pods on the sides.. what are the chances those pods can be dropped off at a belt to be filled up and picked up again in 2 or 3 hours, before they deteriorate?.. ok, dreaming again but was a good idea and would get rid of the jetcans. Also be a nice isk sink to be able to build replacement pods for the dopes that forget to pick them up, or the ones that get popped. Should be able to fit a jump drive mod to it as well when in lowsec so it can be used like a JF, and have to remove the JD Mod to get it back into highsec, might also be a good way to catch a few of them at a gate when they forget to uneqip the JD. just speculating / dreaming again.
