I was under the impression that the minigun was a railgun, what is the difference?

a minigun is just an accelerated version of a machine gun, which in itself is a very accelerated version of a semi automatic weapon. so instead of say 500rpm you get 2000rpm.. and when those rounds are each 25mm you are talking massive destruction. (for example the GAU on an A-10 warthog/thunderbolt II). rpm=rounds per minute.
Railguns projectiles are accelerated magnetically whereas miniguns and such are driven chemically by the explosion/combustion of the gunpowder

Minigun is a multi-barrel rotary cannon, except in the US Army personal minigun project that created a man personal multi-barreled machine gun that was also called a minigun. See Predator for what it WOULD have looked like if they could find someone big enough to hold its recoil
And presently both the UK and US Navy use a system of twin low caliber miniguns for throwing 100,000's of rounds into the air infront of incoming missiles. Think the Brit version is called the Goalkeeper, but it only works at short range and so is only effective against conventional warheads. Strap a Nuke to a missile tip and getting inside 1km means death. Much like the RAF's idea at one time of dropping Nuke Depthcharges in the event of WW3. That way you don't need to get THAT close to your target, the heat wave boils a few million litres of sea water and the concussion wave crushes anything with a few km underwater

I will be interested in how they intend to deliver the ordinance (projectile, also known as bullet) into rugged terrain. Or, to say it simply, I don't know how they can fire the bullet over one mountain and have it land near the base of another. At a range of 250 miles, it seems that the trajectory (bullet's path) might limit the weapons use to targets that have no natural bariers in the way. That means we won't be able to hit anything in a canyon, unless the bullet has a very good guidance system (hard to make tight turns at 6km/second, I think). And, did you see the cost estimates per bullet? $10,000 each? It'd be cheaper to make bullets out of kryptonite..
However, the US military has done quite well on the Star Wars/laser project, even though we've only been able to use ground-based lasers and have yet to deploy them in the field (to the best of my knowledge). We have also been doing a bit of testing with sounds, which should be non-leathal but cause a migrane for anyone targetted by the weapon (might be nice for separating terrorists from civilians). It seems that there are difficulties in selecting new or non-lethal technologies. For example, the military rejected a laser system that could target the eyes of any potential enemy and blind them (only found one news story on this, so I can't confirm the project's existance). It may be non-leathal, but it's not that much of an improvement.
Also, the army and airforce have made their own leaps into the 21st century. US troops are now being equipped with a new typre of armor made out of ceramic plates. The old flack jackets could stop shrapnel and small-arms fire (pistols, ect), while the new armor will stop 'armor-piercing' bullets (such as the type shot from an ak-47). The airforce's last generation of piloted fighter jets have already been designed, and the US expects to improve computer-controlled aircraft (such as the current Predator drones, which have recently been equipped with missiles).
By the way, I believe that US helicopters are equipped with miniguns that can fire up to 4000 rounds/second, but are usually set around 2000 rounds/sec because we don't actually need guns that fast. They are powered by the aircraft's battery. |

2 Weapons i have heard of in theoretical developement are :-
Blinder/Fear Mine : Its actually from an episode of Above and Beyond, but its a mine that flashes light at a frequency designed to stimulate the fear sensors in the brain. Its a realistic idea though based on something similar to the effect lights have on epileptics. Or if that doesnt work a mine designed to simply burn the retina out is also in developement.
Sonics : If you pulse the right frequency with enough power you can cause the human skull to vibrate in a resonance that crushes the brain, you can even get a Tank into resonance such that it kills the crew. And if thats not scary how about a focused sonic wave of 200 Db+ that causes air friction and burns you alive Sound disperses too quickly but if focuses right it could be a lethal short ranged weapon with NO protection against it

Macht nix.
I think he was also as much obsessed with math as some of us are with Eve. According to my math teacher Gauss once was deep into his studies one night when an assistant rushed up and urged Gauss to follow him: "Quick, your wife is dying!"
His reply: "Tell her to wait with that until I'm done here!!"

Sadly, No. But I'm happy to see I'm not the only swabbie (retired) who plays this game. By the way, frigates are NOT "DD" Destroyers are DD. frigates are FF.

This is the coolest Topic on a forum I have read in a while, lots of interesting weapons mentioned here. I wonder how many are science, and how many are science fiction
That sonic guns sounds a little too sci-fi for me, probally could be done however! Which is the scariest part... ------------------------

Gauss guns and rail guns have been on the cards for a long time. With technology making smaller and more powerful batteries, it will only be a matter of time before hand held railguns are thought of. Just imagine troopers with a gun capable of firing through three brick walls or even a sheet of solid steel to kill you
