Originally by: Leonstein Railguns utilise Coils or Rails to achieve acceleration of a Magnetically affected mass (Usual Nickel Slug) to extreme speed, due to the speed of the projectile involved the mass can still be very small and yet carry massive damage...So the power supply will have to be huge (The BS Reactor as mentioned) but the gun could be very small, possibly only a couple of inches in bore. The theory of Guass Cannons (Coil Driven) or Railguns (Rail Driven) is well old, so its not a BIG shock they've got it on the way
The whole thing was started by some German Prof. called Guass, thus the Guass Cannon...
Isn't Nickel non-magnetic? As are most metals. There has to be some amount of a ferrous metal (iron) for electro-magnetism to work?

Nickel, the element, is ferromagnetic and similar to iron in that respect. A US "nickel" is not magnetic, as it is actually mostly copper in composition :P

Here Iam posting in this thread again.
A metal doesn't have to be ferromagnetic to work in a mass driver (I like that term more then coilgun, they are the same thing). There are two types of coilguns, reluctance and induction coilguns. -Reluctance uses ferromagnetic metals, where the projectile is accelerated towards the center of the coil through a pulse of electricity. -Induction coilguns use non-magnetic metals. Typically aluminum. They work by REPELLING the projectile. They are placed past the center of the coil, protuding towards the target. The coil is pulsed very quickly, this induces eddy currents onto the surface of the bullet, these currents repel the magnetic field coming from the coil thusly accelerating away. This is actually slightly nicer for multistage designs, since you don't have to worry about turning the field off in time as you do with reluctance coilguns, which can suffer from suckback if the field lasts to long. However aluminum doesn't make very good bullets, so you run into some problems there. It's to soft and very light.

Jacxx is right a electromatic does not have to have a ferrous metal to work any metal of which current can be inducted into can become a projectile. This concept can easily be shown py taking a 60Hz coil sticking an iron bar about the same size of the inside diameter of the coil and attempting to push an aluminum ring on th the bar you can hold it there for a lil bit. As soon as you let go though probally cuz it is now burning your fingers. The aluminum ring will shooot of off of the iron bar.(make sure coil is plugged in and has power) Thus demenostrating eddie currents. |

Just what this world needs. Thank you USA for not curing Cancer and making more weapons. Set your priorities straight.
Yep its a shame, especially when they allready dominate militarily. Such a waste
oh great so now we have to do EVERYTHING for you huh? And besides we like weaponry. Metalstorm by the way is an Australian company contracted by the US DoD. As far as the railguns (EM guns) go, the major physial problem is that the round travels so fast down the armature of the weapon that the plasma wave welds the round to the rails effectively ejecting some superheated gas out of the barrel and killing the weapon...But have no fear there will be a solution soon..probably some kind of carbon resin with metal embedded...who knows.
I for one won't apologize for my nation's excellent contributions to science especially in the realm of erectile dysfunction. I think all women and men should love U.S. Pharmaceuticals for this reason alone.
We will be the ones to cure cancer by the way, you may continue doing nothing to help. Thanks.

Edit: The armature creates the Electromagnetic Force, it is not the rail or barel itself necessarily.
Microscopic imperfections on the rails as well as the armature are vaporized when the rails and energized, since their resistence is so low as to be non-existent, firing currents can reach upwards of 10 thousand amps on smaller guns. More then enough to vaporize copper, steel, or pretty much anything short of tungsten. The speed of the projectile has nothing to do with its likelyness of welding. Infact, by practice, injecting the projectile into the rails helps to prevent welding, since it doesn't remain in contact with any one place on the rails long enough to weld into place, causing the projectile to almost "ride" on a wave of plasma. You can test this by touch the leads of a small capacitor, such as a photo flash capacitoe, together after charging it. The wires should spot weld together, probably not substantially with such a small pulse, but noticably. This is the same thing that happens inside a railgun, except on a smaller scale.
The armature itself does not neccessarily make the electromagnetic force. The capacitors for a railgun are always discharging, albeit slowly. The bullet only accelerates this discharge, amplifying the EM force. This doesn't apply to the coilgun at all however, since the bullet is only a way of changing the EM force into Kinetic. If there's no bullet a field will still be formed around the coil.
Lastly: The railgun is one amidst many "EM guns". Least efficient by far. But if you are going to talk about an EM gun, please use the correct term. To many people refer to everything that uses an armature to convert EM to linear kinetic force as a "Railgun". It's quite annoying.

what I can't wait for is the next generation of plasma-kinetic weapons which will be very interesting.

In: Conference Record - Abstracts. 1990 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, Oakland, CA, 21-23 May 1990. p. 167-168. Abstract: Summary form only given. The MARAUDER (magnetically accelerated rings to achieve ultrahigh directed energy and radiation) program at the US Air Force Weapons Laboratory is a study of magnetically confined plasma toroids that will convert stored electrostatic energy into plasma kinetic energy. The first phase of the experimentation only forms the toroids and does not attempt to compress and accelerate them. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculations have been performed with the 2-1/2 dimensional code MACH2 in support of this phase. The simulations demonstrate the formation of the torus, including reconnection of the poloidal magnetic field components. Number densities in the toroids are on the order of 10/sup 16/ per cm/sup 3/, and the magnetic induction is on the order of 1 T. A series of calculations shows that only a limited range of discharge energy will produce toroids. Too little energy will not push the plasma through the initial, injected poloidal field; too much will not allow a good reconnection.' More proof that USA is playing EVE and also in line with the most broken race in EVE, Caldari.
US got the lead in their missile technology (Tomahawks) in the early 80's. Who does that sound like?
And now railguns? Does it need to be spelt out more? -

Because, you know, the US is the ONLY country in the world that could possibly be working on building bigger weapons! Every other country in the world are just little and peaceful and completely devoid of corruption and any idea that violence is a neccessary evil! Blasphemy! Just those big bad americans always causing problems!
And Krulla: Yeah designed to kill civilians like you and me. That's all these weapons could possibly be used for, mowing down innocent civilians right? They couldn't possibly be accurate and strong enough to eliminate precise people from hundreds of miles away. They definetly wouldn't be used on an enemy military who would kill YOU the civilian, or any of our own military without a seconds thought. There can be no good coming of a more efficient weapon.
Seriously, the US has some.... okay, many, government related problems, Im not gunna lie. But don't assume that everything we do is done for some kind of evil purpose of taking over the world.

Because wasting human life is totally worth trivial politics. Besides: He's out of office in like 2 years, which is the exact reason we have the 2 term rule.
War is inevitable, be it with good cause or not. I for one support a way in which to wage it with minimal losses, or atleast minimal unneccessary losses. Collateral damage is the very reason we don't use nuclear weapons, I'll be very happy when we don't use bombs at all.

Im gonna deviate a bit from the weapon aspect to the power aspect of some of these weapons. I was reading an article in Popsci that was about battiers capable of running cell phones and labtops longer then the current batters can. The wierd thing is they are as thin as a piece of paper .003" or .076 mm thick. The way they made these batteries is by creating a virus with that contained a certain charge and then coated it in some metal. its said to be 30% more effective then todays current batteries. I just thought this was very interesting imagine a car batterie sized battery made like this could probably run 3 cars :) since we all know lead acid batteries are clunky and outta date.
Also its too bad that hailstorm project got shutdown was an interesting read.

This is what you get when your millitary budget is larger than the next 20 nations combined and 6 times bigger than Chinas.
