The US Navy has apparently been busy. They have been focusing heavily on the next generation of weapons and propulsion systems, including Microwave, Laser, and Electromagnetic-Kinetic weapons, more commonly known as railguns. What specifically surprised me was the fact that the Navy plans to deploy these systems as early as 2011, on their DD(X) Frigates. The range of these rail guns is estimated to be over 250 miles.

I don't see why you should be surprised - we've had working railgun prototypes as early as 1986. Funded by the US Government, several US universities have taken part in nearly every stage of the development of railgun technology. Everything but the targetting system is unclass, so feel free to Google it.
The hardest part was to create a power cell small enough to be mobile. Having a nuclear reactor onboard, ships don't really worry about that... Seriously, the power cell is the only real obstacle, hence why we are seeing ship-based railguns yet nothing for tanks. Even with a small 25mm tungsten-carbide rail delivery system, there's just no way to fit a replenishable power cell on a tank. Projected timelines for tank-based railgun weapon systems is so far away it's not even being considered.
At least, it wasn't in the mid 90's when I [Edit for content]...
BTW: seeing what a real railgun can do is mind-boggling

Railguns utilise Coils or Rails to achieve acceleration of a Magnetically affected mass (Usual Nickel Slug) to extreme speed, due to the speed of the projectile involved the mass can still be very small and yet carry massive damage...So the power supply will have to be huge (The BS Reactor as mentioned) but the gun could be very small, possibly only a couple of inches in bore. The theory of Guass Cannons (Coil Driven) or Railguns (Rail Driven) is well old, so its not a BIG shock they've got it on the way
The whole thing was started by some German Prof. called Guass, thus the Guass Cannon...

Aye, doesn't it suck when technology is stopped only by nature? The only thing stopping those guns from existing is a lack of a powerful enough cooling system.

There are always better, cheaper, and more efficent ways to kill each other
Looking at the velocity on those rail guns... bet they could peg a aircraft with a ship mounted one if they had a good enough targeting system.

a minigun is just an accelerated version of a machine gun, which in itself is a very accelerated version of a semi automatic weapon. so instead of say 500rpm you get 2000rpm.. and when those rounds are each 25mm you are talking massive destruction. (for example the GAU on an A-10 warthog/thunderbolt II). rpm=rounds per minute.
Railguns projectiles are accelerated magnetically whereas miniguns and such are driven chemically by the explosion/combustion of the gunpowder

Minigun is a multi-barrel rotary cannon, except in the US Army personal minigun project that created a man personal multi-barreled machine gun that was also called a minigun. See Predator for what it WOULD have looked like if they could find someone big enough to hold its recoil
And presently both the UK and US Navy use a system of twin low caliber miniguns for throwing 100,000's of rounds into the air infront of incoming missiles. Think the Brit version is called the Goalkeeper, but it only works at short range and so is only effective against conventional warheads. Strap a Nuke to a missile tip and getting inside 1km means death. Much like the RAF's idea at one time of dropping Nuke Depthcharges in the event of WW3. That way you don't need to get THAT close to your target, the heat wave boils a few million litres of sea water and the concussion wave crushes anything with a few km underwater

I will be interested in how they intend to deliver the ordinance (projectile, also known as bullet) into rugged terrain. Or, to say it simply, I don't know how they can fire the bullet over one mountain and have it land near the base of another. At a range of 250 miles, it seems that the trajectory (bullet's path) might limit the weapons use to targets that have no natural bariers in the way. That means we won't be able to hit anything in a canyon, unless the bullet has a very good guidance system (hard to make tight turns at 6km/second, I think). And, did you see the cost estimates per bullet? $10,000 each? It'd be cheaper to make bullets out of kryptonite..
However, the US military has done quite well on the Star Wars/laser project, even though we've only been able to use ground-based lasers and have yet to deploy them in the field (to the best of my knowledge). We have also been doing a bit of testing with sounds, which should be non-leathal but cause a migrane for anyone targetted by the weapon (might be nice for separating terrorists from civilians). It seems that there are difficulties in selecting new or non-lethal technologies. For example, the military rejected a laser system that could target the eyes of any potential enemy and blind them (only found one news story on this, so I can't confirm the project's existance). It may be non-leathal, but it's not that much of an improvement.
Also, the army and airforce have made their own leaps into the 21st century. US troops are now being equipped with a new typre of armor made out of ceramic plates. The old flack jackets could stop shrapnel and small-arms fire (pistols, ect), while the new armor will stop 'armor-piercing' bullets (such as the type shot from an ak-47). The airforce's last generation of piloted fighter jets have already been designed, and the US expects to improve computer-controlled aircraft (such as the current Predator drones, which have recently been equipped with missiles).
By the way, I believe that US helicopters are equipped with miniguns that can fire up to 4000 rounds/second, but are usually set around 2000 rounds/sec because we don't actually need guns that fast. They are powered by the aircraft's battery. |

2 Weapons i have heard of in theoretical developement are :-
Blinder/Fear Mine : Its actually from an episode of Above and Beyond, but its a mine that flashes light at a frequency designed to stimulate the fear sensors in the brain. Its a realistic idea though based on something similar to the effect lights have on epileptics. Or if that doesnt work a mine designed to simply burn the retina out is also in developement.
Sonics : If you pulse the right frequency with enough power you can cause the human skull to vibrate in a resonance that crushes the brain, you can even get a Tank into resonance such that it kills the crew. And if thats not scary how about a focused sonic wave of 200 Db+ that causes air friction and burns you alive Sound disperses too quickly but if focuses right it could be a lethal short ranged weapon with NO protection against it

Gauss guns and rail guns have been on the cards for a long time. With technology making smaller and more powerful batteries, it will only be a matter of time before hand held railguns are thought of. Just imagine troopers with a gun capable of firing through three brick walls or even a sheet of solid steel to kill you

I tried to find the new scientist article that discusses some of the new wave weaponary thats been attempted (and mostly discarded) by darpa and some of the were scary (an a little amusing too).
For instance the *** Bomb was designed as a moral killer and chemical weapon by stimulating homosexual urges in solders who are exposed to it (and totally true too)
There was the hyper kinetic orbital weapon thingy that was designed to be a satilite that dropped meter long tungstan rods out of orbit on a target, theory being that once they reached there target on the ground they would be traveling with such speed that impact would be like a small nuclear weapon detonating, just no fallout.
Various plasma based weapons that work either by generating a concussive presure wave on impact or ionise the air enough for high voltage discharge (those knows as so called "air tasers")
...And of course good old fashioned lasers, If they ever manage to get real working atom lasers they would make hugely powerfull weapons too, imagine a cross between a railgun and a laser, (sometimes known in fiction as particle lances or particle cannons )

I built my own gauss rifle from a long peice of wood, several magnets and a lot of ballbearings, it was quite fun. After it broke (sat on it) I built a small hydrogen generator to fuel a cannon... it was a resounding failure as it explodied when I lit the hydrogen/oxygen mix i'd fueled it with... however.. I did come away knowing that I can at least make hydrogen. Hooray.

Well there are labs that test the effects of sound pollution on buildings by subjecting building materails to extream Dbs of sound. This sound is so loud that it can cause human organs to rupture. Now the only issue is to figure out how to make it be directional at the same intensity and presto you have a sonic gun.

Hehehehe saw a program years ago about reseachinto non lethal wepons in development...
The 2 that stuck with me were the anti paratrooper one, basicly a net of some kind fired to entangle the chute on its down (Hmmm how non-leathal is making a para with all of his equipment meet the ground at speed).
And a laser to blind helecopter pilots, causing the pilot to crash the aircraft (like thats not going to cause bad things to happen to crew and passengers).
They had something about sonic based weapons as well...
Their justifcation for them being classed as non-lethal weapons? They did not actually kill when fired, the death is caused by other effects (going splat when hitting the ground or crashing a aircraft).
I did laugh my ass off as this was explained... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Heh, Electromagnetic weapons is my specialty, I build them in my spare time. Infact I went to ISEF a few months ago with my coilgun (ISEF= International science and engineering fair).
Anyway, There is a whole bunch of incorrect information in this thread. Ill just go and clear it up.
RAILGUN= An EM gun that uses the lorentz force for firing, consists of 2 parrelell rails, usually made of copper. Projectile is placed between them and accelerated by energizing rails. In most all civilian attempts this causes the bullet to be incinerated and turned to plasma. Real world use as a delivery system for anything other then solid slugs is pretty much impossible, or so I understand.
GAUSS GUN= Uses a line of fixed magnets and ball bearings to transfer and increase inertia of another ballbearing. bigger applications of this aren't really plausible.
COILGUN (MASS DRIVER)= Uses solenoids (Hollow electromagnets) to accelerate a ferromagnetic object. These are fairly easy to build and boast MUCH higher efficienys then railguns, up above 2 and 3%. Railguns are typically sub 1%.These are what I build, and to my knowledge are what the military actually is planning on using. Since they don't put energy directly through the projectile it can be used for explosives as long as they have a ferromagnetic shell. Also, one of the navy guys at ISEF was telling me about the one they are working on, he made no mentions of railguns.
That site, information unlimited, is a source of ridicule for people "In the know" as it were. Alot of their plans and devices are complete bull-crap. Seriously, don't buy things from them.

They have those, they're called magnetoplasmadynamic drives. The concept has been around for a few decades now, and recently prototypes were tested on satellites. Unfortunately, they require more power than our spacecraft are capable of generating with current technology. IIRC Caldari ships ingame have engines based on this principle.

Alot of work has already gone into sonic weaponry. Low frequencies seems "useful" as they can resonate with human body cavitities. Frequencies around 22 Hz can cause nausia and involuntary bowel movements. Your enemy can't really fire back at you whilst vomiting and/or crapping his pants.
Projected sound is a newer one, where a tightly focused beam of sound can be used to disrupt the target, whilst no-one else is affected.

This is why we come up with new ways of killing people. I have no problem with Russia selling weapons, but they really could pick better buyers than crazy dictators and fanatics. (They also sell weapons to Iran among others).
As for the Cancer, if you read Popular Science, the latest issue shows that Cancer *should* be all but trivial in about 10 years. And yes, the US is doing that too. Oh...and with that, HIV may have a cure. Plus they're making a universal flu vaccine type thing, and creating ways to regenerate both brain and spinal tissue and repair damage to the nervous system. This also eliminates Alzheimers and Parkinsons among others, plus it means being able to heal injuries that used to be permanent. All of this is less than 20 years away, some of it as close as 10.
And whether you like it or not, let's face it. It's better the US develops these weapons first, because if not us, someone else will, and it very well could be someone a lot more crazy than the US is currently.
On a side note...why should we have to cure cancer? There are plenty of other countries out there that do medical research. Don't get me wrong, I think we should, but I don't see why the burden has to be on us- you make it sound like the US is the only country capable of doing it. -Zyck CEO of Principium |

On a bus ride back from Nevada I recall a man named **** (not Feynman) who was coming back from his duties at Lake Tonapah. He expressed the peak of rocket technology that had been reached in the late 70's, the technology to fabricate the SR-71 prior to the resrouces being created, and electro magnetic propulsion. He was an active test pilot of over 20 years.
**** proceeded to discuss "lost" or "burried" technologies which are developed then never seen by the public. Under most circumstances military technology is 30 years ahead of what we get to see.
I was more curious about the power supply, or theory of such, that would be utilized for an electromagnetic propulsion system although he obviously began to selectivly choose his words when discussing this.
Now, you're probally wondering, as I was, what a test pilot for top secrect US military installations is doing riding "Greyhound" when a commuter flight would have taken him 45-60 minutes. His responce? "I don't like to fly."
Cool guy and I regret only having 3 hours to discuss technological advances with him. Being that most of the dicussion would sound as science fiction he expressed a found enjoyment from a book titled "Flight of the Old Dog". It was a far cry from what i was reading that initially caught his attention that led to our conversation. ;) Boobies: |

Its is totaly possibe to launch a projectile of the cailaber on to the top of a building. So long as the projectile reaches 0 velocity at the top of the building. Thus eliminating a long fall but instead only a few feet this also would make the risk factor of bodily harm lower. Yet you wont find me in one of those things. |

Originally by: Leonstein Railguns utilise Coils or Rails to achieve acceleration of a Magnetically affected mass (Usual Nickel Slug) to extreme speed, due to the speed of the projectile involved the mass can still be very small and yet carry massive damage...So the power supply will have to be huge (The BS Reactor as mentioned) but the gun could be very small, possibly only a couple of inches in bore. The theory of Guass Cannons (Coil Driven) or Railguns (Rail Driven) is well old, so its not a BIG shock they've got it on the way
The whole thing was started by some German Prof. called Guass, thus the Guass Cannon...
Isn't Nickel non-magnetic? As are most metals. There has to be some amount of a ferrous metal (iron) for electro-magnetism to work?

Here Iam posting in this thread again.
A metal doesn't have to be ferromagnetic to work in a mass driver (I like that term more then coilgun, they are the same thing). There are two types of coilguns, reluctance and induction coilguns. -Reluctance uses ferromagnetic metals, where the projectile is accelerated towards the center of the coil through a pulse of electricity. -Induction coilguns use non-magnetic metals. Typically aluminum. They work by REPELLING the projectile. They are placed past the center of the coil, protuding towards the target. The coil is pulsed very quickly, this induces eddy currents onto the surface of the bullet, these currents repel the magnetic field coming from the coil thusly accelerating away. This is actually slightly nicer for multistage designs, since you don't have to worry about turning the field off in time as you do with reluctance coilguns, which can suffer from suckback if the field lasts to long. However aluminum doesn't make very good bullets, so you run into some problems there. It's to soft and very light.

Jacxx is right a electromatic does not have to have a ferrous metal to work any metal of which current can be inducted into can become a projectile. This concept can easily be shown py taking a 60Hz coil sticking an iron bar about the same size of the inside diameter of the coil and attempting to push an aluminum ring on th the bar you can hold it there for a lil bit. As soon as you let go though probally cuz it is now burning your fingers. The aluminum ring will shooot of off of the iron bar.(make sure coil is plugged in and has power) Thus demenostrating eddie currents. |

oh great so now we have to do EVERYTHING for you huh? And besides we like weaponry. Metalstorm by the way is an Australian company contracted by the US DoD. As far as the railguns (EM guns) go, the major physial problem is that the round travels so fast down the armature of the weapon that the plasma wave welds the round to the rails effectively ejecting some superheated gas out of the barrel and killing the weapon...But have no fear there will be a solution soon..probably some kind of carbon resin with metal embedded...who knows.

Edit: The armature creates the Electromagnetic Force, it is not the rail or barel itself necessarily.
Microscopic imperfections on the rails as well as the armature are vaporized when the rails and energized, since their resistence is so low as to be non-existent, firing currents can reach upwards of 10 thousand amps on smaller guns. More then enough to vaporize copper, steel, or pretty much anything short of tungsten. The speed of the projectile has nothing to do with its likelyness of welding. Infact, by practice, injecting the projectile into the rails helps to prevent welding, since it doesn't remain in contact with any one place on the rails long enough to weld into place, causing the projectile to almost "ride" on a wave of plasma. You can test this by touch the leads of a small capacitor, such as a photo flash capacitoe, together after charging it. The wires should spot weld together, probably not substantially with such a small pulse, but noticably. This is the same thing that happens inside a railgun, except on a smaller scale.
The armature itself does not neccessarily make the electromagnetic force. The capacitors for a railgun are always discharging, albeit slowly. The bullet only accelerates this discharge, amplifying the EM force. This doesn't apply to the coilgun at all however, since the bullet is only a way of changing the EM force into Kinetic. If there's no bullet a field will still be formed around the coil.
Lastly: The railgun is one amidst many "EM guns". Least efficient by far. But if you are going to talk about an EM gun, please use the correct term. To many people refer to everything that uses an armature to convert EM to linear kinetic force as a "Railgun". It's quite annoying.

In: Conference Record - Abstracts. 1990 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, Oakland, CA, 21-23 May 1990. p. 167-168. Abstract: Summary form only given. The MARAUDER (magnetically accelerated rings to achieve ultrahigh directed energy and radiation) program at the US Air Force Weapons Laboratory is a study of magnetically confined plasma toroids that will convert stored electrostatic energy into plasma kinetic energy. The first phase of the experimentation only forms the toroids and does not attempt to compress and accelerate them. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) calculations have been performed with the 2-1/2 dimensional code MACH2 in support of this phase. The simulations demonstrate the formation of the torus, including reconnection of the poloidal magnetic field components. Number densities in the toroids are on the order of 10/sup 16/ per cm/sup 3/, and the magnetic induction is on the order of 1 T. A series of calculations shows that only a limited range of discharge energy will produce toroids. Too little energy will not push the plasma through the initial, injected poloidal field; too much will not allow a good reconnection.' Edited by: Krulla on 29/07/2006 12:32:33 I'm not sure what disgusts me more, the fact that these things are being built, or the fact that all you people are going "omg! Cool! It r just liek in eve lololol"..
Those are not cool. Those are horrible weapons, designed to murder people. People like you and me.
Railguns are cool and flashy in computer games, but in real life, no thank you.

Great. The US just wants us to love them, not only do they have the urge to invade and **** up countries, but they also create MORE weapons that allows you to kill people more efficient.

Because, you know, the US is the ONLY country in the world that could possibly be working on building bigger weapons! Every other country in the world are just little and peaceful and completely devoid of corruption and any idea that violence is a neccessary evil! Blasphemy! Just those big bad americans always causing problems!
And Krulla: Yeah designed to kill civilians like you and me. That's all these weapons could possibly be used for, mowing down innocent civilians right? They couldn't possibly be accurate and strong enough to eliminate precise people from hundreds of miles away. They definetly wouldn't be used on an enemy military who would kill YOU the civilian, or any of our own military without a seconds thought. There can be no good coming of a more efficient weapon.
Seriously, the US has some.... okay, many, government related problems, Im not gunna lie. But don't assume that everything we do is done for some kind of evil purpose of taking over the world.

Yeah, the way things are today this is quite accurate.

Biggest problems with weapons today is just that, that they enable you to kill people hundreds of miles away.
Quote:

What about the 100k civilian casualties from the Iraq invasion eh?

1: So it definetly has nothing to do with the general crazyness that always occurs in that part of the world, maybe it's just us who makes it so visible?
2: You prefer wars in which many people from both sides die eh? Perhaps we should go back to trench style wars where hundreds of thousands died brutally?
3: Some kind of a source for that statistic?

Because wasting human life is totally worth trivial politics. Besides: He's out of office in like 2 years, which is the exact reason we have the 2 term rule.
War is inevitable, be it with good cause or not. I for one support a way in which to wage it with minimal losses, or atleast minimal unneccessary losses. Collateral damage is the very reason we don't use nuclear weapons, I'll be very happy when we don't use bombs at all.

please get back on topic, this is a thread about railguns not U.S. foreign policy. I would be happy to take it up with anyone in game, but please get back on track.
What will be even more interesting is when they have scaled the railguns down far enough to be mounted on our main battle tanks, and later...perhaps gauss rifles for soldiers.

Im gonna deviate a bit from the weapon aspect to the power aspect of some of these weapons. I was reading an article in Popsci that was about battiers capable of running cell phones and labtops longer then the current batters can. The wierd thing is they are as thin as a piece of paper .003" or .076 mm thick. The way they made these batteries is by creating a virus with that contained a certain charge and then coated it in some metal. its said to be 30% more effective then todays current batteries. I just thought this was very interesting imagine a car batterie sized battery made like this could probably run 3 cars :) since we all know lead acid batteries are clunky and outta date.
Also its too bad that hailstorm project got shutdown was an interesting read.

Guess its better to spend billions on the millitary than to focus on fixing the many domestic problems we have or to relieve the millions of people who are starving or homeless around the world.
This is what you get when your millitary budget is larger than the next 20 nations combined and 6 times bigger than Chinas.

Sooo we have to fix the worlds problems as well?
Every country has its own domestic problems.

So how long until we find the MWDs in Irag? That was the original reason for the war. Its just been spun now to be the war for Iraqi freedom. President Bush has a 34% approval rating for a reason.
Also its funny how people forget that during the Cold War we gave aide to Iran, ****** controlled Iraq, and gurillas (including *****) in Afghanistan. Guess they've become an evil empire just recently =)

Just what this world needs. Thank you USA for not curing Cancer and making more weapons. Set your priorities straight.
Yep its a shame, especially when they allready dominate militarily. Such a waste
oh great so now we have to do EVERYTHING for you huh? And besides we like weaponry. Metalstorm by the way is an Australian company contracted by the US DoD. As far as the railguns (EM guns) go, the major physial problem is that the round travels so fast down the armature of the weapon that the plasma wave welds the round to the rails effectively ejecting some superheated gas out of the barrel and killing the weapon...But have no fear there will be a solution soon..probably some kind of carbon resin with metal embedded...who knows.
I for one won't apologize for my nation's excellent contributions to science especially in the realm of erectile dysfunction. I think all women and men should love U.S. Pharmaceuticals for this reason alone.
We will be the ones to cure cancer by the way, you may continue doing nothing to help. Thanks.
Edit: The armature creates the Electromagnetic Force, it is not the rail or barel itself necessarily.
