The mechanics of the so-called EVE's sandbox has created a pervasive gaming culture where every foul behavior normally not condoned in the real world- short of breaking the EULA/TOS - is allowed, even encouraged. Griefing, ganking, bashing, lying, cheating, killing, mass-murdering. That's the brigand mindset that EVE has created.
"EVE is Real", advertises CCP. Recently we found out that it's actually true. We saw that a supposedly normal, decent person cannot keep separate mindsets -one good, another bad. Forcefully the bad one will prevail, and illegal acts may be perpetrated. We also saw that not even CCP is able to make a judgement call based upon the laws of the country. CCP has been promoted as the ultimate court instance and law upholder. A 30-day ban is the ultimate punishment for an illegal act commited. A private apology and monetary compensation - made virtually using in-game tools - is substitute for a real-world hearing in front of a flesh-and-bones judge.
Everyone is lacking a moral compass, including EVE's sandbox.
Yes, EVE is all about brigands. Those who excel in the art of being a bad criminal are glorified, promoted, and politically supported. This is an important factor to explain why EVE - after almost 10 years after launch - remains a niche game. It's a cult, a sect, a religion of a minority who mostly seek an outlet to nurture their bad side.
There is no place for those like me that would like to create a better future by engaging in law-abiding activities. If EVE were really a sandbox, we "carebears" would have tools at our disposal to seek, promote, and even enforce our way of life against the brigands pounding at our doors.

You should be worried about the real-world police catching on. This game will end very badly you know. Goons are already metagaming, you should see how many of little goons line up behind their master brigand.
A 30-day ban will not keep the blood tide from rising up. And I mean blood spilled by goons. |

I think this is every major overstatement I have heard about this game...
I mean I just thought it was a game where I could fly Spaceships and shoot other Spaceships but now that I know I am a minority in a sect of a cult steeped religious beliefs based around being evil I don't know how to feel.
You know, I have never scammed anyone, or fallen for a scam, committed a suicide gank or put myself in a position where I could be an easy target for one. I have both PvP'd against Pirates and War Targets and have been a Pirate from time to time in the sanctioned Pirate Space. I have played many aspects of PvE in the game fine with little interruption in all sec statuses. I have talked to a lot of people and found most amicable.

Yeah, it's definitely a game where the more of an arse you can be, the more you will progress. I don't have an internet badass side, just like in real life I can't scam people or be a pirate or take pleasure in other peoples' suffering. Many will say it's not the game for me, but I disagree. I've played on and off for 4 years or more, I enjoy it. I enjoy doing missions, I enjoy going to lowsec and doing some PvP, but you can't get anywhere unless you're an arse and I'm fine with that.

Fortunately (depending on your P.O.V maybe unfortunately) for Eve those so called sociopaths are the ones that create the content that attracts headlines, be they good or bad headlines.
90% of the people I've met in this game are normal folks, sure they like to collect tears, living out a fantasy lifestyle on the frontiers of low and null sec or as outlaws in high sec, but they're role playing just as I pretend, and fail, to be a successful trader.
When I first started just after Apocrypha I made the mistake of accepting low sec missions, I died a lot, I contributed tears to the collective pool, I also got advice on scanning, probing, how to fit my ships and ISK, from the very guys that'd just spent 30 minutes tracking me down to kill me, that's not sociopathic that's practical and hands on advice from people who knew what they were doing. War hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |

A very small part of the CFC actually took part in the Interdiction.
In an ecomomy driven by War especially null War Goonswarm destroyed over 10000 ships this month.
Across all sec statuses here is the number of Non Combat Ships destroyed this month.
Mining barge 27 Exhumer 76 Industrial 60 Transport 40 Freighter 2 Jump Freighter 1 Cap. Industrial 0
Ten Thousand Sociopaths seemed to be to busy playing the game to make much of an impact on the 200000 High Sec Accounts. During the interdictions they manage on average 500 kills of Exhumers a month in an 8000 man corp. Expecting that a few of the pilots ganking are repeat offenders I am guessing that High Sec isn't being hit by the full force of these 10000. Almost like most of these people are average players flying around doing EVE Null Sec Stuff.

Indeed, it does not prove that EvE are considered full of sociopaths at all. So the claim of a Brigand Sandbox is perhaps flawed.
Doesn't mean there isn't an imbalance in the associated encounters relating to pirating however that do exist. Nor do official kills identify which "players" are related to the activity either. |

I play EVE in a system that averages 125 people a day. No one in that system ever engages in such activity that you've pointed out. On occassion we are set upon by half a dozen, or so, "visitors" at war with each other. I've yet to understand why they decide to come to our corner of the galaxy, but they do. The ONLY time said behavior occurs is when these folks happen by.
What's funny about it in a HA HA HA way is, they always last about the same amount of time before they become bored with each other, and their "FUN" activity, and disappear. Since the 125 people that RESIDE in this system are familiar with each other, local has an entertaining and amusing atmosphere, UNTIL these "real EVE players" drop by.
They then reveal themselves with their lame attempts at smacktalk, which we find all kinds of amusing - or nauseating. What these "real EVE players" don't seem to realize is, they're not the first, nor will they be the last to drop by and regale us with their snappy banter which amounts to the same things the last group of "real EVE players" came by to spew into local.
So, even when the "real EVE players" drop by, they comprise less than 10% of the population of the system. When their digital nailbiting session ends, of course, the comprise 0% percent, and the 100% just keep on truckin' like they've done all along. SO, to others reading along here, when people start up with this "all" and "everybody" and "everything" jibber jabber...consider the source.

And if you did the same count in a non-NPC 0.0 system they would be 100% of the population. You can prove just about anything with a small enough sample size. One system isn't even close to being statistically significant. |

Damn Straight.
It is their fault if they walk into a PvP area. It is their fault if they click accept on a contract without reading it. It is their fault if they transfer money with expectations of getting it back. It is their fault if they don't tank their ships.
Know why, because attacks on other players aren't crimes they are opposition game mechanics for an open PvP game.

All of Eve is a PVP area. You sign that contract every time you undock. Some areas are safer than others, but no areas are SAFE. The universe is a dangerous place, indicative of the riches waiting for those who brave those dangers. "A man with a drone-boat has nothing but time on his hands." |

I am thinking more along the line of 200+ Grid for LSE and 800mm Plates, Cruiser level HP for Mining Barges an Industrials which have Low Shield and Armor and 3-4 Mid Slots for Mining Barges.
General Boost more to tanking potential then then just base tank. If people still fly them around unfit after they have the grid, slots and base stats to support a real tank then well I don't know maybe a special server with crayons in the CQ or somethin. |

That's be my thinking; the venting gases on mining barges leads me to think they've got forges and proessing facilities already inside to make transport easier, so they would need to be able to take the temperatures associated; some ores when crushed to powder are flammable, and in confined spaces could explode, so they'd need explosive resistance... Lots of reasons the hull on industrial ships could be built tougher. "A man with a drone-boat has nothing but time on his hands." |

How do people normally deal with brigands? You can do the same in EVE Online. But it means you need to meet their force with your own and you can do that through a few different mechanisms.

A brigand game - what would you expect from Icelanders descended from Vikings?
You are what is ruining this game. There is nothing wrong with carebearing, mining or what ever.. There is however something wrong with people like you whom seem to feel entitled to play this game risk free.
This is a PVP game.. Much of PVP is non consensual and it covers broad aspects of this game in many flavors. EVE's golden rule is you are safe no where and never fly what you can't afford to lose.
Don't want to lose your 3 billion isk pimped out mission Tengu? Well don't undock it or don't complain it you are not prepared and you lose it because you failed to take proper precautions, thinking you should be safe in high sec.

Eve is no sandbox. It's more a kitty litter box. To stand before a man at an inquisition, knowing that he will rejoice when we die, knowing that he will commit us to the stake and its horrors without a moment's hesitation or remorse if we do not satisfy him, is not an experience much less cruel because our inquisitor does not whip us or rack us or shout at us. |

In this aspect EVE differs from reality in one major way.
In reality morality is spelled out for you, and laws are in place to make sure you adhere to them. Others take responsibility for making sure those laws are enforced.
In EVE you are responsible for determining your own morality, and for developing the resources necessary to enforce it. YOU take responsibility for creating and enforcing the code of conduct you wish yourself and others to follow.
If you actually feel such morality doesn't exist in EVE (which is, of course, untrue) then that speaks to a failing on your part, not anyone else. When I check troll in the dictionary, it has a photo shopped picture of you standing somewhere in the vicinity of a point.

OK, am I the only one who does not scam, have not suicide ganked, and not been what many would consider an psycopathic *******, and yet still do not believe that those actions are bad and should be discouraged.
Also, the people throwing around words like "cyber-bullying" are horribly misrepresenting the situation. A dude suggested ingame harassment of a 37(47?)-year-old male player via legitimate ingame tactics, but crossed the line with his reasoning. I agree that the "to kill himself" was over the line, but I have no problem with anything short of that.
No one should be immune to ridicule and contempt for their actions in EVE, nor for their attempt to bring their own ****** life into EVE. In every post scam/gank conversation you have in EVE, a player will (and should) usually assume that someone is lying for pity or to make you feel bad (EDIT: Unless they say they will kill themselves, in which case remember to petition before continuing your scam). |

Normal folks don't collect tears.
maybe not IRL, they certainly do in game. I've been pirated by people who are in healthcare, law enforcement, retail etc, Eve is a fantasy where you get to be what you want to be, an alter ego or evil twin of yourself, some of the people in game may actually be low down, backstabbing, thieving, scheming, conniving scum IRL but they're definitely in the minority.
Paraphrasing to fit in with eve, the french philosopher Voltaire once said "I may not agree with what you do but I will defend to the death your right to do it" War hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, High Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside. |

Normal folks don't collect tears.
"Normal folks" like to play games that allow them to play fictional heroic or villainous characters, as well as read books or watch movies about them.
Abnormal folks don't understand this and have a hard time separating fantasy and imagination from reality. When I check troll in the dictionary, it has a photo shopped picture of you standing somewhere in the vicinity of a point.

Aylleen wrote:The mechanics of the so-called EVE's sandbox has created a pervasive gaming culture where every foul behavior normally not condoned in the real world- short of breaking the EULA/TOS - is allowed, even encouraged.

You're talking about the people making threatening phone calls to Alex Gianturco's house, saying that they're going to kill him, even shoot his dog, right? Malcanis' Law: Any proposal justified on the basis that "it will benefit new players" is invariably to the greater advantage of older, richer players.

This is eve online, a hyper capitalism simulator centered around dictatorship lead nullsec alliances vying for economic and military domination of each other. At some point even test and goons will have differences, such is the way of null.
If that does not sound bleak to you then you've got problem. The only way to survive in EVE is to forge your own alliances and in essence, **** people over in order to profit. The reason you must screw them is because they want the same resources you do, and you will fight for it, win or lose.
Basically yes, we're brigands, pirates, scumbags and scammers, to those who are our competition. |

same tools, different mind-set.. Deal with it.. Just the fact i can get AK-47 and three clips for around 250 dollars doesnt mean i should make such investment and kill for fun. But i definitely can. We all have the same exact tools, just chose not to use them. "Different mind-set is an obstacle there.
So in the game terms. It means become the one we consider "corrupt". |
