2003 called, they want their whines/trolling back.
Joking aside, it's the same downtime for everyone. For some it's in the evening, the morning or the middle of the day. Instead of moaning at CCP to change it to suit yourself, perhaps you should move to a better time zone? Removed. Like i've said beofre, a rolling towntime....downtown...damnit...a rolling downtime would be possible to design if i knew what the stuff is that happens during timedown...damnit...you know what i mean!
It might even be possible to do a client sie thing, or at best, shorten the actual downtime and set some downtime on individual clients.

Edited by: RaTTuS on 15/10/2008 07:22:46 as I always post on these threads Status DT aoccurs when the server has 0 players so it is correct
however it also occurs about 2 hrs after the lowest normal server population, but then ccp would have to be in to fix anything that goes wrong with the startup 2 hrs earlier...
edit same as sherrif I've also suggested a rolling DT before also .. move it 1 hr forward each day ... -- BIG Lottery, BIG Deal, InEve

two hours earlier would be awesome. feed the hamster something extra nice as compensation for their change in schedule. Probably get a bunch more subscribers (speaking from zero experience in these matters). what time would DT be in the US zones? |

Edited by: Rashmika Clavain on 15/10/2008 07:30:35 I doubt a rolling downtime is feasible as I don't believe most CCP technical staff are probably not emplyed to work 24x7.
Christ, if I had a load of users whining that they cannot connect to the server and want an engineer to reboot it at on an hourly incrementaly type basis, I'd tell them to fo.
That said, if there is a problem with the reboot then I guess the server could stay down till business hours when the rest of the support staff arrive at work. Or are we egotistically expecting CCP staff to adjust their working lives to satisfy the forum warriors? Removed. Originally by: Gokyu If DT was changed so Australian gamers had at least some time during prime time, then subscriptions in Australia and Asia would jump up.
..and go down somewhere else. Someone has to suffer DT during primetime and right now it suits America (North and South) and Europe just fine. That's most of their potential audience covered. It's not our or CCP's fault that plate tectonics has left you adrift over there.
Quote: And there IS a solution that doesn't change the amount of downtime the system needs to run and function properly... Change downtime to every second day!!
What makes you think that's technically possible?
Quote: Another possibility could be to stagger downtime an hour either side of the current time being used if it needs to be done every day
Thereby confusing 99% of the playerbase just for the sake of a minority population living on the other side of the world.
Quote: I am leaving Eve until my daylight savings is over because of this issue, I just don't have enough time playing the game I love, due to regular downtime, to warrant spending the money.
That's a sensible decision on your part if that's the way you feel. As I noted above - it's not CCP's fault that Australia is where it is in relation to the rest of the world. Of course it's not your fault either. It's just the way this planet currently is and we have to deal with it.
Quote: CCP, do you have any response? Is it a topic you are discussing or do you not care about the Asian/Australian market?
They care about all markets but they aren't magicians. They have to accept compromises. The cluster apparently needs a daily downtime and they have decided that the solution that suits the most people is to dump DT on you guys. I'm sorry. CCP are sorry but this isn't a perfect universe. Someone, somewhere nearly always gets dumped on and this time it's you. -- (Sarcastic mission running veteran, 4+ years)

I'd say if it were feasible to run a staggered downtime they woulda done it. But it's just one (1) server cluster and if you take it down then it goes [poof!] for everyone, no matter where you are. Having a downtime every 48 hours instead of every 24 hours would probably result in a massive amount of lag in the second day. Added to that, if something goes wrong with the database server(s)* right now a lot of people will be complaining about their losses. Can you imagine the whining and whinging if this happens during a second day?

CCP has replied to this question several times before.
Downtime is schedules when staffing at both CCP in Iceland and the datacenter in London, where the cluster is hosted, is at a maximum. This guarantees that if there is a problem during DT, the appropriate personnel to fix the problem is on hand immediately.

Why do these threads always complain about the downtime part of DT instead of pointing out the benefits of being able to be online immediately after DT? (Admittedly there are fewer than there used to be, but there still are some.)

Because the benefit of being online right after DT is much reduced when you have minimal time in which to enjoy it...

Im pretty sure if it was a couple of hours earlier than it would be in India prime time. Australia has far more people than India, which is a sparsely populated dessert. A couple of hours later would be New Zealands prime time and as we all know, Kiwis lack the opposable thumbs to grip a mouse properly so are very unlikely to prescribe to Eve. 1-2 hours after that even, lets say around 1500GMT would be prime time in the middle of the Pacific, which is a waste land of French nukular tests and islands now destroyed from Survivor film crews.
Let's face it- this is all about the geo-political North exploiting the Souths prime time.

The company does it because it suits our working needs; no one wants to get out of bed every day at midnight, to work on the servers. I do it because the Aussies have all the beautiful women and sunshine that, as an Englishman, I never had growing up.

could they not vary it between 10:00 and 16:00 gmt? this would keep it within the reasonable hours for the europeans that actually work on the server aswell as helping out the aussies :)

Living on the west coast of Oz,my only suggestion to the rest of you Eastern Staters is to move over here. Downtime is at 7pm (time for shit, shower and food) and is back up at 8pm if not 15 minutes or so earlier, plenty of time for a good chunk of play. While I have no gripe with the downtime, organizing ops with euro and US players though...now thats a different story.4am alarm clock ops suck. |

I am just curious why they need to go down at all other than for patches. Banks have significantly larger databases and they don't shut down their ATMs to back up or perform maintenance. Is it just poor design?
