I'm a father of 2 and my Downtime occurs right in the middle of the 2 hours I get to myself on some nights. I, like most of the subscribers, am a casual gamer who doesn't have much time for eve unlike the hardcore gamers and trolls that don't want anything to change because DT for them occurs when they are asleep.
If DT was changed so Australian gamers had at least some time during prime time, then subscriptions in Australia and Asia would jump up. And there IS a solution that doesn't change the amount of downtime the system needs to run and function properly... Change downtime to every second day!!
Another possibility could be to stagger downtime an hour either side of the current time being used if it needs to be done every day, although for an easier schedule I'm sure the first suggestion is probably the better one and would be one more widely accepted.
I am leaving Eve until my daylight savings is over because of this issue, I just don't have enough time playing the game I love, due to regular downtime, to warrant spending the money.
I'll be keeping an eye on developments but I don't expect CCP to change anything unless they can see that the above suggestion would ultimately increase the $.
CCP, do you have any response? Is it a topic you are discussing or do you not care about the Asian/Australian market?
See you all on the other side.

I'd hate Australia too if I lived somewhere else. The feeling of missing out on living in such an awesome country would kill me. -

Asia wasn't so bad as you get an hour off for dinner (7pm) after getting back from work. Australia is a right pain though at 9pm in Sydney. little time when we get back from work. gets a bit of a late night if you log on at 10pm.
we can see why CCP has this downtime time (they hate us), but it'd be nice to have a change just once in a while. |

Cant be assed to do timezone shit but im sure if you move it the same thing that is happening to you will happen to someone else.
"And there IS a solution that doesn't change the amount of downtime the system needs to run and function properly... Change downtime to every second day!!"
How do you know the system doesn't need downtime every day?
Also, can I have your stuff?

If some of you Aussies can stomach a flight from down under to Fanfest, then I'm sure the rest of you can at least handle an inconvenient downtime.

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 15/10/2008 05:40:41 But I guess on a more productive note, maybe the server managers could rotate the designated downtime every few months. Not to anything that would be inconvenient to them, but just so that it could be slightly less inconvenient for people in populated areas. I mean there's a whole ocean of non-subscribers east of Australia. New Zealand is a mere tall tail, a fictional land that many have sought but from whence none returned, so I think we can count that stretch of the Pacific as non-subscriberland as well.
edit: or I don't know whatever go away.

I think the timing of the downtime is due to it being in quietest period of the European working day because CCP staff do weird dev related stuff on the server during downtime.

Why because I'm posting on an internet spaceships forum? I have time, he obviously doesn't.
Which is fairly sad considering I work around 80 hours a week.
Lets be real, CCP probably isn't going to change DT for one person. And last time I was in the Japanese Channel (Yesterday) I sure didn't see them complaining... _______________________________________ Sig? where. There's no sig here. |

All I can say is, tough luck for being a minority in gaming. The European and North American markets dominate EVE's subscriber base, and downtime is scheduled to run at times most convenient to these players. North Americans have something like 55% of EVE's subscriber base, Europeans have something like 35-45% and Oceanians have the rest.
It runs at the time it does because it's bang in the middle of the European working day and is early in the morning for US players.
I don't want DT to change because on most days it happens when I am at work [Mon-Sat] and on Sunday I usually have to do college work at any rate.
Changing DT to be every other day would just shaft you even more - the server's downtime would probably have to be doubled, thus meaning you can play one day and not the next. The amount of maintenance the server and the database needs every day is huge, and to suggest that you can somehow put it off for a day is silly talk. If it's to be kept in good working order, it needs a daily downtime.
tl;dr: you live in a crappy timezone, the servers are on GMT+0 [almost geographically exactly in fact, they're in London], it is not CCP's fault that you live in said timezone a million miles to the East; they will not change anything to do with TQ's downtime to cater for one bloke's situation. Be thankful that in Australia/NZ you can at least go outside and enjoy nice weather occasionally, unlike here in the UK . . .

Edited by: Jenina Hawke on 15/10/2008 07:15:03 While I sympathize with the nice aussies and kiwis, I think they are forgetting that CCP are operating out of Iceland with servers based in London. That means that their working day includes what we know as down time. There may be a hint hidden here - sometimes they actually do stuff to the servers, other than feed the hamsters and drink coffee.
Ok, non-sarcastic answer to OP: I don't think your suggestions are feasible. Having different times for DT would be harder for everybody to remember and plan around (I am thinking about large scale pvp ops fx.) and having a DT only once every 2nd day - well, I am pretty sure CCP actually need to feed the hamsters every day. With the Icelandic economy being kind of broken, doing so at any time but prime working time would be the fast way to get to pay quite a lot more for subscriptions...
