Drones: drone 5 - 20 days
Ceptors: 5m-8m isk
10 Heavy drones: 800k isk

If you don't want to be owned by heavy drones, take more than 1 frigate when you attack a ship carrying them. Take 6 or 7.
Stop whining for changes and use the game mechanics that are already in place, you can't assault a battleship carrying drones with a couple 100k frigates, get over it.
All we need is a fix for the infinite range of drones. That's all.

I love this arguement.
Please add to your cost: gunnery skills, missle skills, enginnering skills, electronic skills, navigation skills, spaceship command skills, and probably more i cant remember.
I have 10.5 million skill points. My interceptor died in 4-6 seconds vs *only* drones.
You can feel free to add to the argument.
I dnt care about drone trackig or max drone damage anymore, i just want them to have an actual firing range i can work around somehow.

He¦s not whining imo since it has been said that tracking on drones will be adjusted so heavy drones will have a hard time hitting small ships plus the fact that after drones shoot at you you have to leave the grid for them to stop.
When people want changes its not always whining and certainly is not bad, changes = adapting = fun.
But thats just my opinion. Spawn of the Devil

I'm all for killing the infinte range drones.
Heavy drones should not have tracking trouble tracking something bigger then they are tho, period. Do frigs have trouble tracking cruisers? The size ratio might not be the same but you get the idea
Ceptor/Frig pilots should be able to warp away or get out of range, thats about it though. ________________________________________________________

Edited by: Xelios on 29/06/2004 07:16:10 Exactly, fix the range bug, leave the tracking alone. Lets say drones have a range of 20km after they fix the bug, lets also say a frigate starts getting hit by some. That frigate has plenty of time to hit mwd and get over 20km away before it dies. Now picture 5 or 6 frigates doing this, all attacking the drones.
Heavy drones are a battleship's only remaining defense against frigates. The only other option is to replace large turrets with medium guns and a web or two. Even large smartbombs don't have enough range to be terribly useful against frig pilots who know what they're doing.
I'm an interceptor pilot myself, I've trained all but amarr frig to 5 and I can fly both interceptors and covert ops frigs, I still say leave the drones alone. Thus far I've seen no good reason to change their tracking, other than people not liking their 100k frigate being owned by a 120 mil battleship with drones.

You just in a way explaned what the DEV team is going to do.
I belief it was TomB that said that the changes would be made since one size should not be used for all purposes, same as large weapons did in the past.
In order to defend against frigates and cruisers but yet be prepared to take on a Battleship now all you need is large weapons and heavy drones, getting hit by frigates you launch the drones, getting hit by a Battleship you launch the drones and shoot your guns, end of story.
It seems the DEV team doesnt want that, they want that you fit weapons to track and hit frigates or/and use drones that can follow and track fast moving frigates, heavy drones are not the single solution to an orbiting frigate, not by a long shot.
Use cap drainer, web, smartbomb, smaller turrets, also there was talk about smaller missiles required to hit frigates instead of the single solution called cruise missiles, heck even a low class large turret hits a frigate that is using MWD and is webbed and missile are quick to kill a frigate if it cant use MWD because it was cap drained.
Drones have 3 classes, same as modules and ships, each class has its purpose except for drones, that will be fixed according to (like i said I belief it was) TomB.
If those changes dont fit your gameplay then like all other changes that have happaned in the past, tough luck.
It¦s called balancing, right now drones are unbalanced.
Our opinions dont matter since its not our game to begin with, we just have the option of pay to play or not to. Spawn of the Devil

So by the same law a crow that costs on the market over 10 millions should be able to own a thorax that costs around 5-6? millions in 1 on 1 because the crow costs more, that logic is flawed since a thorax can take out few interceptors that cost combined the same as tier 1 battleship just because it can wield 10 heavy drones and thus kill the frigates one by one in matter of heartbeats.
The cost of things has no merit in discussions like this one since a rooky (cheapest ship in the game) ship can kill an Apoc (most expancive ship in the game) if the Apoc is fitted wrong, it takes times yes but it can be done, same as 2 frigates take on a Megathron near a planet and kill it since it has not offencive power that can hit them (this I have done with TWD).
The reasons are there but you wont see them because they dont fit your playstyle, and I know you can and do fly interceptors but that doesnt mean your views are not biased. Spawn of the Devil

What kinda lamer opinion is that....
Even if a BS couldnt hit an interceptor, its not as if the interceptor would be able to kill a BS unless he was afk.
Heavy drones ARE in need of a good nerfing. I dont think interceptors should be able to orbit a BS without gettign hit at all but currently, if a load of heavy drones are release u literrally have seconds to get the fuk outta there or ure in a pod and even in an interceptor that isnt long enough sometimes.
A ship that costs 5-10 million should be able to at least get away from stuff like that :/

First off, you assume its all balanced and good since it fits you gamestyle I assume, well news flash man, it has been stated by CCP officials that this will be balanced same as other classed items, small medium and large, in the past it was large = best, it was fixed and people adapted after huge amounts of flaming.
Now the same will happen with drones and again people flame the changes even before they happen, seen it happen since the start of the game and it seems it will never stop when changes are to be made.
I for one find it really hard to belief that people cant see that its not balanced and needs fixing.
For an excample, its a drone controlled by the ships AI, one drone with huge gun (compared to other drones) should have somewhat harder time to track its weapon to follow a fast moving target, smaller drone with smaller weapon that does less dmg per shot but simular damage per second turns its weapons faster to follow fast moving targets, the only draw back is that the smaller drone has less defense but then again that drone is smaller an can you imagine something, you can carry more of them and launch new after each is destroyed.
I am not sure but I think that is the plans that are being made at CCP Development department regarding drones.
Try to look at everything from both sides since being totally blocked from one side always yeilds terrible results. Spawn of the Devil

I forgot to add, people didnt complane when sentry guns were given lock times and tracking so now they get wreckings and misses.
Yet people complain if tracking for drones will be looked in to.
Drones dont miss and they kill any frigate in seconds no matter how fast it goes, ordit you target at 20+km/s at very close range in one of the smallest ships in the game and they still dont miss, nothing should have godlike abilities in a game.

---
I am actually of the oppinion that drones are... underpowered.
*waiting for reactions*
Now, I am not talking about large drones being able to take out frigates faster than a Claw on speed. Mostly, it's an oppinion formed from the cumbersome drone system. What need looking into (pretty soon): * Bug Infinite range of drones * Design flaw The loss of drones when warping out * Design flaw The difficulty associated with launching specific drones from a large set * Balance issue Drones are just an extra tiny amount of damage. One interceptor turret is actually able to deal more damage per second than 3-4 Heavy Drones. * Balance issue Drones, being close ranged, completely lack the speed to keep up with their host. * Design flaw There are only 2 kinds of combat drones, there should be 3 (medium drones missing) * Design flaw "Medium" drones are missing one or two drones * Feature request Long ranged, but poor damage dealing drones, would be intresting to have * Feature request Utility drones does not exist (I know some are in planning), such as looting drones, repair drones, and EW drones. * Design/Balance issue Drone bays which are limited to drone size only, does not really cut it, nor fit in the EVE universe.
On the last point: I'd like to see a completely new drone system, whith these features: * Fitting There is a special drone hard point. Or rather a Drone docking slot. This effectively limits a ships capabilities of carrying drones to such an extent that Drone specialized ships become a viable, and possibly more balance, option. * Fitting Drones currently require no attention, nor maintainance, from the ship. It would be more intresting if they came to require CPU and Powergrid. As an added effect of this maintainance, they should be repaired when docked after/over a time frame. * Utility Drones should not stray from the host ship too far. Effectively they should remain at a range where they can quickly return and dock when the host enters warp. * Balance I am not adverse to see drones have tracking. At the same time, damage should be increased. * Skills Drone tracking, drone damage, and drone utility range should have separate and clear skills. The skills allowing the use of a drone type should have a homogene type of bonus. * Effect Gallente ships will more greatly rely on drones as a form of weapon, instead of support or frigate protection (which to a very large extent they are reduced to now), while at the same time the fitting requirements ensure that balance issues do not go out of hand.
Bottom line: drones are a bit broken, and they are of little real use. Any change the Devs do to drones will not have as big ramifications as the turret changes on the EVE community. * Do not be afraid to change and improve drones, developers! --

I'm not sure what purpose heavies will serve after they get nerfed. If they cannot be used against smaller ships for close defense what are they for? They have negligible impact when engaging another bs.
That leaves attacking indies, hardly seems necessary to use drones in such cases.
The argument that a bs cannot engage a frigate but that a frigate can engage a bs due to relative size seems to have been ignored if this change goes ahead.

My suggestion:
Heavy Drones : Used against battleships and other capital ships. High tracking penalty against frigate, Medium penalty against Cruisers.
Medium Drones : Used against cruisers/battleships, medium tracking penalty against frigate, no penalty against battleships or cruisers.
Light Drones : Used against frigates, no tracking penalty for any shipclass.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The reason why i want to see these changes is so that the drone carriers becomes more important since they can carry several waves of diffrent drones and would be optimal for handling Drone defense. I want the battleship pilots to be forced to chose between using either only drones against other battleships or carry some drones against frigates incase some would chose to show up. They always do .
I would also like to see the drones beeing worked on abit more when it comes to their range because at their current status they can start hitting a frigate orbeting at 5km, and still hit it at full damage while the frigate is moving over 100km away.
But FIRST OF ALL, CCP should fix all the important bugs instead of nerfing the game to sheit !!
My Suggestion to CCP and TomB : 1: Decrease the payments to whoever is doing the nerfing. 2: Increase the payments to whoever is doing the bughunting.

Fix the bugs yes.
If you want to balance stuff, why not DOWN-balance the damage output from 3 small turrets for example, thats a good place to start balancing considering how much small guns cost in ammo/capdrain to fire vs damage output.

just a case of swings and roundabouts, it seems to me that at the moment the gallente bs's have the edge with 425's in terms of dishing out damage - i do more damage at greater range with skills 4 & 4 than i do with 1400's in my tempest @ 5 & 7. With the redundancy of heavy drones i will have to replace a couple of the big guns with 250 rails (or even 150's?) to fight off itty bitty ships. I also think that a totally new drone system is in order.
Combat Drones should be a viable defense vs small crafts, but they shouldn't be the be-all-end-all of frigate defense. And most importantly there should be several ways for frigates to handle attacking combat drones, i.e. outrun them, mess up their tracking etc.
Someone also mentioned that if combat drones wouldn't be able to 'wtfpwn' frigs anymore they'd be useless, since they're no good against anything larger. IMO this shows that the usefulness of drones is atm very limited, there needs to be more flexibility in drone warfare.
In conclusion, this begs for a complete overhaul of drones. Some suggestions: - Combat Drones * implement both tracking and range restrictions * classify the current drones as light/medium/heavy combat drones * light drones: high speed, good tracking, short range, low damage but high ROF * medium drones: average speed, tracking and range, more damage, slightly lower ROF * heavy drones: slow, mediocre tracking, long range and high damage, low ROF (note that this means 'for drones', i.e. the tracking on heavy drones should still be at least as good as the tracking on heavy frigate weapons) * possibly add missile drones to the mix for some variety * make the signature resolution on drones dependant on the parent ship and the size of the drone (i.e. light drones on a frig lock almost instantly, while a heavy drone launched from a BS might well take a few seconds to archive a lock)
- 'other' Drones: * Repair Drones (hull & armor) * improve the cost/gain ratio on Mining Drones * Salvage Drones (to pick up stuff from containers/deep space) * possibly add Deep Space Survey and Recon drones * missile defense/EW drones * suicide bomb drones
- general: * ECM Burst to cause drones to lose their lock * add drone-related modules, e.g. hull upgrades that increase drone bay in expense of speed and/or cargo space, other modules for repairing drones in the bay or enhancing drone attributes(tracking/speed/sensors/ROF) * give gallentean ships (esp. cruisers) some drone-related bonuses
I think those suggestions would enhance drone warfare a lot.

As far as i know the NPC prices when they came out were a bit more expensive then frigs, 600-800k or something.
The prices are high right now because of the high demand.

So that's supposed to be enough of a justification to let them kill anything except another BS in a matter of seconds?
Let's face it: Anyone with enough skillpoints to use a BS to anything else than mining/hauling has enough cash that one lost BS (that's 30 mil insurance money lost, not 100 mil. Unless they were dumb enough NOT to insure it) won't exactly bother them.
Furthermore, this isn't about price balancing, it's about balancing the ship classes. BS should be powerful, but limited in their engagement possibilities.

A drone is the size of a speedboat; a frigate is the size of a Coast Guard Cutter; a cruiser is the size of, well, a cruiser; and a battleship is the size of the USS New Jersey.
When someone suggests that a drone should have a problem with tracking a frigate, I find that odd. It's like saying a guy on a speedboat would have a hard time pointing a rifle at a circling coast guard cutter, even if that cutter was moving very quickly.
I think drones should be able to track ANYTHING in the game EASILY. They're tinier than anything else out there and super maneuverable. So long as the damage they do is not sufficient to make them a really viable weapon against larger ships, they should have no problems attacking what their gun damage IS suited to.
So here's my suggestion:
Small drones: Tracking good enough to hit frigates easily Gun Range 10KM Speed high and maneuverability high Gun damage and ROF about equal to a frigate fast-firing gun (pulse laser, autocannon, blaster)
Medium drones - slower, 20KM gun range, tracking good enough to hit cruisers easily but have a bit of trouble with exceptionally fast frigates, damage and ROF equal to a cruiser fast-firing gun.
Heavy drones - longer range, tracking good enough to hit BS/industrial, trouble with fast moving cruisers, very hard to hit frigates.

Battleship carrying Anti-frigate drones = Battleship wins. Good Friggy pilot Vs nub battleship pilot = frigate wins.

The solution to this problem is blindingly easy as far as I'm concerned:
WEAPON - COUNTER
Turrets - tracking disruptor, ECM, damps Missiles - defenders, smartbombs Drones - ???
Implement a "Drone Control Inhibitor I". Point one at an enemy ship and it loses control of some or all of its drones. The tech 1 version affects 50% of drones launched from a host ship, the tech 2 affects 60% and so on and so forth.

2 L smart bombs.
If the drone optimal weapon range would actually work and if ECM burst wouldn't be ****** up by the skill and if drones wouldn't have instant relock, then ECM burst would be a good module against drones too.
Drones need to be fixed ASAP. -- Stories: #1 --

anyone saying that a single frigate will win agianst a bs, is smoking *****
i get about 45 dps from my rifter, with 3 125mm autocannon (uber rapidfiring, ultra short range), basically, an uberdrone with a human pilot
to do that, i have to get inside micro smartbomb range, and even a mild sheildtank repairs more than that per second, so, i need lots of freinds to kill you
you want to kill me in your bs? without guns, missiles or drones? mount 1 large smartbomb
i'll either pop or run, in seconds
that's if drones got nerfed to have the trcking of a big gun
as is now.. i simply run away as soon as a bs shows, because evena little old granny in her minerthron, has enough heavy drones onbard to kill me 100 times over before i make it into range

Abso*******lutely
Any lone frigate/cruiser should run there ass off if they see a bs.
Quote: Let's face it: Anyone with enough skillpoints to use a BS to anything else than mining/hauling has enough cash that one lost BS (that's 30 mil insurance money lost, not 100 mil. Unless they were dumb enough NOT to insure it) won't exactly bother them.
Maybe if you run your ship with no equipment on it. Named equipment can make your ship worth up to half a billion. Why bother spending so much on expensive rare equipment when your barely a threat to a frigate/cruiser?
Drones should be able to crush any frigate/interceptor who actually is foolish enough to attack/EW them. All they have to fix is the infinite range bug.

Drones are bugged at the moment they hit 100% of the time for max damage every time , they also have unlimited range.
This is a known bug that needs fixing before any changes are made to drones.
Thats the reason cruisers/frigates are being killed so quickly and Bs can deploy drones a and mine all day without fear from NPC.

I dont know what you all are talking about but Heavy drones DO NOT kill off Interceptors in mere seconds if they are going faster than the drones. Heck a mwd equiped interceptor at close orbit takes a minute or longer to kill off with 9 Heavy Drones.
A MINUTE IS 60 SECONDS not 2 or 3 as some of you make it sound like.
PLUS
If you read the storyline Drones were SPECIFICALLY MADE to combat small, super fast "fighter like" frigates that the Caldari had.
A Heavy Drone is about 100 TIMES SMALLER AND LIGHTER than a frigate!!!!!!
STOP WHINING AND USE THE RIGHT MODULES!!!!!
There are ECM bursts and Smart Bombs, along with your own drones, that work VERY WELL on Drones.
Of course some of you want to be able to have it all and not be able to be killed.
TOUGH!!!!
Drones were meant to fight small, Fast ships and they are doing their job just fine!!
Only thing that needs to be fixed is the range bug to make it match what is listed on stats AND a speed boost.
P.S. BTW drones will have speeds of 2000 M/s to 4000 M/s when Shiva comes along so unless you got 2 MWD's forget about running away

Heavy drone dmg = 20 ish, against shields armour say 15 6 drones minimum on a bs so 90dmg every 2 secs so with a 600hp frig you have < 14 seconds to warpout, an inty closer to 20 and thats the maximium about of time.

The cycle time on an ecm burst is 30 secs, drones insta lock please tell me how this is an effective countermeasure.
Large smarties are great for killing drones.... but how am i meant to dig up 1k of grid on my frig a t2 small takes about 10 cycles to kill a heavy... no frig has any chance of surviving for that long

One thing that buggers me about drones is that they keep hitting you from insane distances. I was attacking a thorax from a corp we're currently at war with in my interceptor yesterday and he released his drones, so i had to run.. but even when i was 100km+ from them, the friggin drones kept hitting me, almost costed me my Taranis.

Edited by: Kathira on 02/07/2004 06:50:39 Edited by: Kathira on 02/07/2004 06:40:57 The one and only bad thing about drones is that they do not have a real range part.
But you cant repair it with the standard "Drones should only hit up to 20 km" cause then droneboats are toast against all stuff wo cycles at 25 km with more speed than they have. And they have not really speed. The best heavy is around 450 m/s which you can outrun with every frig + AB.
So when you want to make the range thingi you'll have to create other drones for range combat over 20 km ........
In the end you will see that there will be so much different Drones that really no BS can be loaded with enough of them.
1. Frigate drones short range 2. Frigate drones mid range 3. Cruiser drones short range 4. Cruiser drones mid range 5. Cruiser drones long range 6. BS drones short range 7. BS drones mid range 8. BS drones long range 9. BS drones ultralong range
There will be no place for Repairdrones / Targettingdrones / Shieldboostdrones .... .
The best dronecarrier = dominix can hold 30 heavys and can loadout a max of 15 in one turn what means that this specialized ship can do .. 1. Have around 9 from each for short and mid range and skip the rest (300 dronebay free) 2. Have around 7 from each for mid and long .. range and skip the rest ( 500 dronebay free ). 3. Concentrate more on ... The numbers of 7 to 9 above will only hold if the dronesize would be the same as heavy = 250 med = 100 small = 50.
And do not forget that there are 4 different drones (damagewise) for each of the choices.
Mabe thats nice for the Dominixers, cause then real nobody can know how that ugly thing is fitted and droned.... , but for all other ships with thei're more limited drone bay it will be a real hard part of choice which drone to take and which not.
Then you also need a fix in throwing them out aka special pools / commands .. .
The next thing you will read in the foren are
HOW TO FIT MY ARMA DRONE BAY ? Any suggestions ?
Maybe that is a good part of the game but it will not make it easier.

You are obviously a noob and have not fought Drones that much.
ONCE you ECM burst a Drone you stop attacking it's owner, you attack the drones. Once they lose target lock unless the owner specifically chooses drones to attack you they will not auto attack. If you start to shoot the Drone's owner then they will auto attack, but not if you attack other drones.
Med smart bombs or deploying your own drones AND missiles works very well.
The fact that players with interceptor's think that they should be able to kill off cruisers and BS's solo and not get damaged is RIDICULOUS!!!! This is NOT Star Wars where you can use a couple of Torps to Destroy a Moon sized Station.
SMART pilots will be split up in special groups for attacking the main target, attacking the main target's escourts and attacking any of the target's defenses (drones). Those that want to solo kill BS's in interceptors are in the WRONG GAME and should quit their subscription so as not to waste money.
Heavy Drones DO have a optimal range of 1000 M for damage. I have seen MANY times how ships going much faster than the Heavy Drones in 5 to 7 km orbits take ALOT less damage than ones orbiting at speeds slower than the drones. The only thing is that their falloff range is 60 km ?!?!?
SO the ONLY thing that needs fixing is the range bug and a speed boost, since they are 100 times lighter and smaller than a frigate they should be having base speeds of at least 1500 M/s.

I agree with his general statement. The range bug needs to be fixed.
Drones having a limited range is a good idea. 5-20km depending on the drone type. Tracking for drones would not be a good idea, would just make them useless. A set range, always hit with fluctuating dammage.
Look at it like this, you are a frig pilot, you see drones, get out. Frig should not be able to handle drones. And when you complain about not being able to get out of range, keep in mind that the drone is also moving, at least 300 m/s.
Drones are meant as an anti-frig/cruiser weapon. Thus, a drone SHOULD wtfpwn you.
There should be more types of combat drones, long range, short range, fast. One thing I would like to see, is a slow drone, about 200 m/s, designed for tanking on battle ships. And they would take up about 400 m¦. If the drone pilot were lucky they would get one hit off on a frig with this drone becuase of how slow they were and their lack of range.
There should not be a anti drone mod. We already have one, its called a smart bomb. If anything I think we should see drone pilot side mods. Things to increase control range, and firing range. Extended drone sensors 1 and drone accuracy 1.

Originally by: Gariuys nerf is such a overused word. Try "balance tuning" or "game mechanics improvements" or something.
Its not balance tuning or game mechanics improvement. Nerf implies a fck up, an unbalance, an uneeded or unwanted unnecessary change, something to increase complexity of the game unnecessarily. I cant see how everyone supports these lousy changes that only serve to make the game more complex, more time consuming, and a LOT LESS FUN. Its NOT an improvement. Its a NERF. Its downgraded, made harder, unnecessary, unwanted, unwarranted. Theres some words for ya.
When its an improvement it will actually balance the game instead of tilting it in favor of the newest people that havent worked hard to get anything like a battleship yet. Not everyone has a bunch of corpmates they can go out and blow things up with so there needs to be a jack-of-all trades sort of ship and weapon class. Not everyone has a huge escort that can cover every type of ship with every type of defense and fire.
I believe nerf will be the word for quite some time as the game spirals downward with more and more unbalancing and unnecessary changes, with no fixes to bugs that have been in the game since the beginning. ---------------------------------- Stop screwing up whats currently in the game and add the new content that was promised months ago. Thanks. |
