Edited by: Irek Dabry on 22/07/2004 19:49:45 Ok, so I just bought an ATI Radeon X800 Pro (256Mb). Replaced an ATI 9700 Pro (128mb) card.
The installed ATI's latest drivers, made a couple of tweaks (FastWrite off, Vsync always off, anso-whatever filtering set to application preference). Cool, I thought.. time to check out EVE!
After fiddling around I was still only getting, at best, 20 FPS! Wtf! I was getting worse frame rates with my new X800 than my 9700!
I went ahead and tried the latest Omega drivers (www.omegadrivers.net) and after a couple more tweaks I was able to get a steady 20-25 FPS, unless there was station in the view, then I would get 15-20 FPS.
Don't get me wrong, the load times between jumps and exiting the station is a lot better, but the FPS suck!
What am I doing wrong?!?
Edit: this should probably go in the EVE Technology Lab forum if someone wants to move it. Sorry!

try looking at your framerates with the interface removed as its a big drain on framerate, plus have you seen an improvement in performance of other games/apps/benchmarks? ive got a 9800 pro and i get better framerates than that if its an empty system but any heavy work load in eve on the gfx side will test the best hardware.
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |

Is that windowed or full screen?

I haven't tried it with the UI turned off, I might try that just to see what I can get. (Not that I normally play that way).
I play it full-screened at 1024x768 with 24-bit color. I've changed the colors around but that doesn't really seem to do anything.
My system specs:
AMD XP 2200 Gigabyte mobo (can't remember which) 1Gig RAM I'm not seeing much improvement on my other games either.. yes there is some, but not what I'd expect. I ran 3DMark03 a couple of times and the highest score I got was 8300 with ATI's Overdrive turned on.
While messing with this last night I realized my mobo only supports AGP 4x, so I have a new mobo and CPU (AMD 64 3500+) on the way. I'm sure that'll help, so we'll see where we end up once that's installed. :)

Yeah, the AGP 4x HALVES the x800's transfer rate. 1.1GB/sec on 4x, 2.2GB/sec on 8x. and yes, it does use all of this.
Just wait until new BTX Form Factor boards come out with PCI express and 8.8GB/sec video transfer rate!!

The AGP bus is not your problem, I can assure you. (Despite what the gentleman above claims). You can run a recent card on AGP 2x and still get excellent performance except for the highest resolutions.
Anyways, your problem is not your videocard - it's your CPU. Your CPU is pretty old, and will be a major bottleneck for EVE performance.
I'm suspecting that the higher-end videocard only increased the strain for the CPU somehow.
Anyways, upgrade the cpu to a newer one and you're fine. Also the speed of your memory is important - having 1 gig of it is cool, but if it's PC133 EVE will run a lot slower then if it's DDR @ 166 or 200 MHz.
I noticed this myself - by accident had my memory set to 133 Mhz (DDR) - and was cursing abotu the horrible performance. Later on I changed it to my default overclocked settings of 180 MHz and EVE is running smooth as butter!

Simple.
You need a new motherborad.
As someone said wait for a MB with PCI-X.
Not worth buying a MB with a max suport of 8 piplines.
Had the same problem a when i bought my 9800 XT card. (forgot to buy a MB with 8 piple suport)

Well thanks for the advice. I already have the new hardware on the way, so too late to wait for the PCI-Express stuff. Besides, my vid card isn't PCI-Express so it wouldn't help!
Oh well, I'm sure it'll be better than what I got now!

You might try older Ati drivers since the 4.8 version was retracted being too dodgy.

Got an Asus X800 pro today. Used Asus 3.06 drivers and it works flawlessly. Getting up to 32fps on 1280x1024. With the advanceDevice=1 turned on and using 32bit Zbuffer. Might get a little more out of it when I hardmod it to and XT but I don't have a clue what core GPU I have.
But in short works A ok for me. ___________________________ Favorite bumpersticker of the month: My head hurts! |

yes, unfortunatly upgrading just your grafics card sometimes does not work... glad you hsve this sorted!! PCI-X would have been good to wait for, and the boards will have an AGP slot as well for a for year atleast anyway. But your fine with the MB you have bought, PCI-X will be awsome when it really gets going, the only issue is, by the time it does get going you will prob have to upgrade again anyway lol...

X800's are too good for current CPU's - all the reviews I have seen have stated these cards are too advanced and are bottlenecked by CPU's of the day.

Sorry but PCI-X won't improve a bit. AGP8 has more than enough bandwith for a game like this. It's not heavy on the textures like Doom3 is gonna be. So if you get the PCI-X version of the X800 it will hardly improve the fps rate of Eve.
Like Joshy says is that the CPU will make a difference. And this generation GPU's is developed for the AMD64/PIV EE so lesser CPU's won't benefit as much from these new GPU's.
And before yesterday I used to have 512Mb PC2100 on my 250Gb chipset board and the performance wasn't that good. But using 1Gb of PC3200 definately helped out there. Since the game is leaking or using up memory on the long run. It starts up with about 150Mb of heap and after 4 hours it's up to 300-380. So with that rate you could easily play a whole day with the 1Gb. ___________________________ Favorite bumpersticker of the month: My head hurts! |
