Have to say im liking a lot of these ideas.
couple of thoughts, inline with the drone changes to make them smaller, and having multiple waves, would we be able to controll more than 10 active drones possibly a third tier drone skill ?
Would it be possible to setup squads of drones, so 10 drones launched could be split to 2 groups of five, and sent after two seperate targets. Easy enough to do now with the invert selectoin option. But with "disposable" drones, and perhaps auto replenish options this becomes more complicated, and keeping track of which drones are going after which target gets very confused.
Have EW drones been concidered. Perhaps only as big fat drones, but being able to send a heavy webbing drone after a frigate would be cool. Lots of options here :)
What are the implications for mining drones, will they be chaged too inline with any size changes to comabt drones / drone bay (if any) or are they gonna be left as is.

Oh! and while you're at it with drones.. please fix the active drones window so that it'll remember its own size :) Spanks in advance. -------

Does this mean that a solo BS in 0.0 wont be able to do spawns with frigates, since drones will be useless (and smaller drones will die)?

Edited by: RollinDutchMasters on 26/07/2004 00:37:15 At least for me, any reasonable number of drones on the screen causes massive graphics lag, absolutely slaughtering my framerate. While hordes of drones from the carrier-type ships sound good, I'm a bit concerned that itll make already laggy fleet battles completely unplayable.
Would it be possible to either simplify the drone models or include a toggle to prevent them from rendering at all?

there needs to be a better way of controlling drones,
also their status like health is always incorrect, and their range should be displayed somewhere
the other question I had was, will there be more drone variations? i saw that the repair drones have been 'created', will we get those, and possibly webifying/cap draining drones too?
and can you please explain which drones are blaster drones, which are railgun drones, which are projectile drones, etc.. because a lot of the new skills for drone combat are revolving around that. So far I dont see any distinction
my idea for drone size is to reduce all drone bays by a factor of 10 as well as the drone volume by a factor of 10, so light will be 5m3, med will be 10m3 and heavy at 25m3.. would also be nice to make them scoopable to anyone if the owner has lost control link for more than 5min _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. Only rendering the engine trail and the icon would be nice. The game would basicly look the same unles you focus your camera on the drones. ---------------------------

so even 10xLight Drones wont pwn a Frigate? and 10xHeavy Drones wont hit a Frigate? What do you want us to do against Frigates TomB?

Edited by: TrueFlame on 26/07/2004 01:56:16 Will heavy drones be given a damage boost? As it stands, drones are primarily an anti-frig defense measure. Nobody really uses drones in battleship combat, and without a damage boost, I don't see that changing.
Second, will frigs be able to carry classes of drones other than light? I mean, since heavy drones are now anti-battleship, I see that as giving frigs a battleship-class weapon. This could mess with the balance.
And lastly, will light drones be like frigs, in that they are near-impossible to hit at closer ranges with bigger guns (read: battleships)?
Im just curious if you have considered these things, and your decisions about them. Thank you.
EDIT: Can we get some sort or drone:ship ratio? You mention that 10x light drones won't kill a frigate...so how many will? Also, how much of a bother a light drone would be against a battleship. Thanks again. |

Please, pretty please with sugar on top, redo the drone interface.
As of today, the drone interface gives inaccurate information and is very hard to use whilst in combat/heated situation. Try and speed it up.
Some points to note for the developers: Show correct health Show the total number of drones under control Make a clear distinction of drone type in the interface Make it possible to group drones Make sure your OWN drones won't go berzerk on you if you hit them with a blast radius weapon.

Edited by: Venril on 26/07/2004 02:39:51 Edited by: Venril on 26/07/2004 02:34:09 Please explain your logic Tomb how a heavy drone. which is smaller, more fragile, more manuverable and faster then frigate is going to struggle to hit a frigate or a cruiser.
I mean compare a Vigil to a Berserker. the berserker is faster, more fragile, weighes 11x less then a vigil and is more manuverable.. But your going to make it struggle to hit a frigate.
That right there defies all logical reasoning. The people who design drones in the actual eve world (not the programmers) would surely not make a drone that is smaller, faster, lighter, more fragile then a frig. but can't hit it worth nothing. Thats just plain stupid and would defy everything in the technilogical eve community.
Your RP excuse made no sense either. Just like a missle today. It seeks out its target with deadly effectiveness. So telling me a drone can't do the same thing with the technology of eve is like saying that all figher pilots know how to dodge a missle simply because its predictable.
If that were the case. We'd still be useing guns not missles.
If your wanting to make a heavy drone unable to hit a frig please then increase there damage. Make them heavy. and Slow with alot more armor then a frig to represent its slugishness.

Im a huge drone fan and have been using them alot. These changes look awesome but they wont do any good until the drone interface gets some loving. One of the most irritating bug is the one where you launch your drones and right click on the drone bar. If you do it too soon you wont get the "Attack" option but "Close Stack" instead. When pushing that you're forced to manually take in each and every drone, that can get you killed. So far I've been unable to get the drone interface window back up after closing the stack. Only way is to right click each drone and call them back to your drone bay manually.
Just a thought.

TBH those changes are better than what I thought would happen. I'm still worried that introducing tracking to drones will have some rather bad effects on pvp overall. With the turret nerfs and the missile nerf that's being discussed right now, drones are really the only reliable defense a battleship has against a frigate. From what I see here scout drones will be next to useless on a battleship, as according to yourself 10 of them won't be able to down a frigate effectively.
Basically, people buy battleships so they don't get pwnd by a frigate or cruiser, not to fight other battleships. A frigate fleet of 40+ is very effective at fighting battleships even now, when these changes come in that's all PvP will consist of, massive frigate ganks. After all, why spend 100 mil isk on a battleship if you're more vulnerable to frigates in it than you would be in a frigate of your own?

Because you will last 10 times longer in your BS than in your frig against 40+ frigs. I hope that answers your question.

Who cares how much longer you last? Will you die? Yes. At least in your frig you'll have a chance of making it out before they scramble/web you, in your battleship it'll be just 'oh.. I'm dead.'
Trust me, when the very first tracking nerfs hit CA switched from mixed fleets to pure frigate gank. PvP turned into sitting there and waiting for them to leave, because even if we killed every single one of them if they'd killed just one of our battleships we'd have lost more than they.
I've spent a couple months training to fly all interceptors and covert ops frigs except amarrian ones, and I still don't want to see tracking on drones, because I know the outcome won't be pretty. I've seen frigate gank hordes, and it's not something I want to go back to.
