Edited by: Skye Aldaris on 13/01/2009 11:46:08 I see so many people just begging for the "best" ship, or the "best" faction...
Why don't people fly the ships they enjoy? You can base it on gameplay, or looks - But, getting the "flavor of the month" ship is quite sheeple-ish of you, is it not?
On a similar note, I haven't had a chance to see the "true" PVP side of EVE - Are DPS ships as common as they appear? Is it rare to see dedicated Electronic Warfare players, or dedicated support players?

Some people do (me included, which is why i am addicted to crosstraining), but K/D ratio is serious business.
Also half the pvp'ers got a falcon alt, so there is plenty of ewar going on. ---------------------------------------------

Because for some it's fun to fly the optimal or FOTM setup, as a new player you'll also want every bit of edge that you can have on your opponent.
DPS ships make out the core of PvP ships but electronic warfare (ECM especially, such as Blackbirds and Falcons) and logistics ships are still very much floating around space where the action is.

Interesting. I used to fly a Caracal, but I hated the way it looked. I'm glad someone likes it. :)

I figured I'd be considered "rude" before I was considered whining.

Every other month or so I spin it around my hangar, get a bad case of the enthusiasm, grab EFT and Sisi, start buying mods and trying to find a good fit..until I realise how subpar it is compared to the mega and the geddon and I just sit down and sob.

I do this often with various other ships...

This character is pretty much exclusively cross-trained Caldari/Galente with just enough Minmatar in there to fly a Sabre. The weapons I typically use are blasters or rails, neither of which are considered to be 'FOTM' right now because they're not lasers. Do I still fly blaster/rail ships? Yes. Why? Because they get the job done, because I enjoy flying them, and because it lets me continue focusing on one area and get really well-skilled in it instead of spreading points around everywhere.
I've always felt that the best long-term plan for training is to learn just enough of everything to try it out then pick something you enjoy flying and specialize in it. Don't worry about FOTM, don't worry if something else is 'better' or yours is 'crap'.
Remember, it's a game, so fly what you have fun flying. -------------------- "I am hard pressed on my right; my centre is giving way; situation excellent; I am attacking." - Ferdinand Foch at the Battle of the Marne |

QR took away alot of the fun with flying ships. The Rapier was a good example, but it somehow lost its identity with QR. Same with the Ishtar, incredibly fun. But its just 'meh' nowdays.
Theres not many ships that really performs in PvP, and people stick to these.

The answer is simple.
Many people started out this way: the "Skrew the man I'll do what I want" ideal. IE When I was a noob everyone said not to train the rokh (I was planning on long term PVE at the time) as a raven is better for missions in general etc.
But I trained it anyway. It was fun for a while: flying a shotgun barreled looking ship with guns that are so different to missiles making for a vast difference in game play was cool.
But soon the "grass is greener" complex takes over. You see your corpees melting through misisons in their ravens, you see your terrible dps barely scratch the npc bs and start to see why the advice was given.
See ppl say such things for a reason, mostly based from experience which is passed on. This doesnt mean you shouldnt try it yourself by all means go for your own goals: just dont be dissapointed when you're let down.
P.S I fly a fleet Rokh with t2 bs guns now and it is definately much funner EVE history

It's a bad habit in any PvP game, wether it's EVE or fantasy MMO's, to always base your skills, abilities, ship setups and so forth around the concept of 1v1 fights.
People tend to fit ships so that they have the best survivability and damage in a 1v1 fight.
Thats why alot new players roll into EVE, asking for the "best" ships or the "best" setups, as well as most of them having wet dreams about flying Capital ships because they think Cap ships are imba monsters that can take on anything in the game 1v1.
There is no "best" ship in EVE (please, lets not make this another Falcon pro/con flamefest). For every setup there is a counter-setup. Jammers vs ECCM, Dampers vs Boosters, Disruptors vs Boosters, Webber vs MWD/AB, Scrambler vs Stabs, et.c, so on and so forth, and thats without taking into account the specific bonuses or drawbacks the different ships have.
That's why you also rarely see support ships around high-sec. You don't need friends to do missions and ratting, can do that alone in a mission-fit ship.
Most of the PvP that happens in high-sec aside from war-dec's comes from canflipping and stealing from wrecks which is done pretty much exclusively by solo-flyers looking for a fight.
In low and null sec, there's bigger gangs and fleets working together, so having a ship fit for EW, reps, shield transfer and warfare bonus plays a whole different and much larger role. There's no point when flying alone to bring an EW ship to disable another ship if you can't also destroy it.
Unless you like to just grief them... :p -------------------------------------------------- "Every complex problem has a solution which is easy, neat and wrong!" |

I fly the Hyperion knowing full well the mega is a better ship. Why? Because its damn awesome looking. It can also fit one helluva mean tank on it.
I just don't see the fun in flying ships because they are the FOTM... then again I fly all gallente ships purely because they are gallente >_> |

Edited by: Diehard Si on 13/01/2009 13:23:59 Its like cars, some people like to have the nice flash Aston Martin/Ferrari, other people want pure performance and to be the fastest and go for the Bugatti Veyron/Gumpert Apollo.
If you want to be better than the next person you fly the best ship with the best fittings for it. But what is the best ship? Well that depends.... |

FOTM is the only sensible thing to fly as its the best and the best means a better chance of winning the fights you get into when all other skills are equal.

In the better gangs in eve you will see ewar and logistic setups as they are massively effective in a good team, in the crappier gangs all you will see are close range tank/gank fits flown by ppl who spend a lot of time on the forum complaining that ewar ect ect is overpowered......... |

I fly mostly what i like.
But then again i like the current FOTM for Amarr missions. Ill never fly ravens, since i dont like em too much. And im still waiting on the moment when a Tempest is sensible mission ship. When that happens im gonna buy one and outfit the hell out of it.
For pvp i try to fly what is fun for me with a bit of FOTM thrown in for good measure. But then im a carebear, so i mostly fly antithief ships. And mostly have intys on my kill list. Which is solo/small gang pvp, but within a very limited frame.
Fly what ya like, and then if a nerf hits eve, you have a high chance that it wont hit you.
God did i laugh at the nano whiners ^^ |

I have always gone against FOTM when i created my first char in 2006 i chose Amarr altough we then were Eve on hard mode, when my char got good and i started getting skills for Amarr Battleships and recons (and soon HACs) i got bored cause BS:es are boring and amarr are now FOTM so a while ago i started a new char and what race was the suck char according to the forums? yes Minmatar so i chose them, So here i am with a 6 mill SP Minmatar Char having abandoned a 24 mill SP Amarr/Gallente Combat Specced char.

Maby its me, if I get bored of my skilsl I never sell my char, I just take my training in a new direction. Its not like the base 900k SP you get at the start matters. And my old chat got great learning skills :).
And for ships. I fly mostly the ships I like, the ships I like happen to be good ships as well tho ;), but not soley. I fly ships that is considred sub par sometimes.

I just love my Hurricane, no ship will look cooler than it. Ever. I've got at least another 100 days training on it until I can use it at its full potential but its worth it. Oh and the description is awesome. I also started playing this game to fly one. Did I mention I like the Hurricane? Also getting an orca for looks and trading - freighters are ugly. The Orca looks to me like a giant mansion on a large plot of land with your stuff on it, just makes you feel like a king. Rifters will always be cool too. |
