the thing is I do fly the ships I enjoy I just think they are somewhat underpowered/not quite right and would like to see them boosted to make their strengths more worthwhile.

i keep asking for advise on Hyperion's, i love the look of that ship and im going to fly it.
but all i get told on these forums is to train for the mega or the domi as the hype sucks, well im still going for it.
The fact is ALOT of people will pick ships that fit their play style and/or like the looks of it, but the truth is those people don't bother posting on these forums, as from what i have 1st hand experience,
most people who hang around in ships and modules will slag off any ship unless its the FOM

You know what the best part of FOTM ships are?
Fitting 1x EM hardener and 2x Thermics.

Nah the best part about FOM ships are, is people spend so much time investing SP into them, and then they get nerfed to hell.
Thats when people who pick the ships / play style they want come out on top lol.

Personally, I fly pretty much whatever I want and how I want it and have ever since I started out and thought putting some small pulse lasers on my cormorant would be a good idea.
I've done my machariel as active and passive shield, active armor, done my ishtar, which is intended for active armor, as a passive shield in one L4 (AE4 in fact, did quite well too), armor tank raven, and so on. Got a rokh I mine in, used to use a hyperion, and a navy megathron I use blasters on in missions, and the other day when I stopped using my pilgrim for grinding L2 missions and switched to my eos I got slapped in the face with a mission that'd only let T1 cruisers, destroyes, frigates, and heavy interdictors into. It was supposed to be a mining mission so I packed an exequror and ended up doing a combat mission in a mining ship.
For some people flying the "best" ship is part of the fun of the game, for others it's flying new and interesting ships/builds, and while there's a point where "fun" and "practical" diverge and should be avoided in some situations (flying a remote armor rep osprey in a mission with a buddy in a myrmidon might be fun but it'd suck in a small PvP gang) it's an elastic point in a game like this that's fun to push and pull at to see what happens.
Also, Skye Aldaris, just an observation. You ask why don't people fly ships they enjoy while condemning them as sheep for flying "FotM" ships which might actually bewhat they enjoy flying. Perhap's it's the devil's advocate in me but that's an annoying bit of (potential) contradiction. |

Hey, if they enjoy FOTM ships then that's fine with me - I was mostly refering to the people that come post here for the "best" ship, and "best" setup. |

Edited by: Joy O''Dread on 15/01/2009 12:00:12 Call me crazy, go ahead...I fly what I like. I begin the process by looking at the ships' graphics, as said earlier: FORM > FUNCTION However, I then have to balance that with the negative fun factor of getting squashed in my non-FOTMs. Luckily I fell in love with the Rifter at first site, and it's able to hold its own so I still fly one quite frequently today.
I just have to say though (*begin rant) why ohhh why can't the cross factional ships be more balanced in game. Sure, many of them are GORGEOUS, Machariel, Daredevil, Drameil, etc,... but:
One has to spend double the SP to get in the pilot's seat, but not only are they grossly underwhelming in the performance to price ratio, frequently their bonuses are all fracked up compared to their slot utilizations.
I can just imagine the devs at CCP saying, "Oh yeah, we'll give mad bonuses on this boat to projectile turrets, and then make the majority of hi slots for launchers; that'll totally reward the players for their extra efforts in qualifying for the ships! (evil cackling)"
 (*End rant)

"Best" ship? Maybe we could get a people's choice award or something and get it over with. Will it shut up the forum posters? Probably not.
If there exists such a ship it would probably spread sooner or later.

Like warping an armour-tanked bait Raven with multiple points and massive EM/thermal hardening into a camp of laser ships.
Unfortunately, there was a Raven firing kinetic torps there as well, and my ECM drones didn't get lucky. I was kinda hoping that the Raven would be using EM torps. |

I love tears of infinite sadness, they give me power. To that end I love my Thrasher, nothing extracts tears of infinite sadness better than a sensor boosted thrasher blowing a slave fitted pod. That and the damn thing looks like a bulldog with elephant ears and a bunch of ticks all over it |

I fly the Taranis, Wolf, and Ishkur because they are fun as hell. I've been flying them since before the QR changes when AFs werent exactly what they are now, and were pretty crappy overall.
I see your point, however. The problem is that gameplay mechanics always force people to fly specific ships with specific fitting layouts or else die horribly and embarrassingly. Flying fun ships is fun, but so is winning. And in a game where losses can potentially cost lots of money, it discourages people from taking "risks".
Every time a new patch comes out, the ships you *have* to fly and the way you *have* to fit them changes. It's nothing unique to EVE, it's something common to all MMOs. There's always a FOTM class/race/ship/fitting/spec that changes monthly. Just be thankful that EVE gives you the option to be able to adapt and stay on top without having to level a whole new character from scratch...

I love my crow, despite the fact that it isn't the best interceptor. I already have Caldari pretty much all trained up, and am going Minmatar atm because I want to fly a vaga and a slepnir, even though Amarr are currently the FOTM.

I still fly the ships i like. Been flying amarr since i started. Flying them now. After lasers are no longer FOTM, i'll still be flying amarr.
Of course i fly a few other ships sometimes, but i love my amarr ships and teh lasers. even before the added +25% tracking to pulse a couple years back. Missed what changes were done in the last major patch (RL issues :/). So i came back flying amarr. The only ships i cant fly for amarr are the interdictor and the titan. :l |
