Fellow Minnesotan Bob Dylan is by far one of my favorite singer/songwriters. His lyrics in particular prove powerful and timeless, and the following is just one of his many songs I feel is deeply rooted in the drearily cyclical but simultaneously hopeful state of humanity. "All Along the Watchtower" is a brilliant work that says it all succinctly, and I certainly interpret it this way.
There is something familiar happening in the darkening universe of Eve; such cycles began as soon as humanity was pit against itself.
This is one of my first thematic works. I know the Bear McCreary version of the song may sound like it is out of place for a few hardcore sci-fi fans, but I could not justify using any other cover. Enjoy, and write feedback if you wish. I'm always looking to improve my storytelling, direction, and editing and compositing skills.
The video itself is roughly in the format of an extended Eve trailer.
Other formats may become available as time or demand allows.
A BIG thanks goes out to my Veto corpmates, who spent no less than 20 hours of their own time helping me gather footage I required on Singularity.

When i read your post i was kinda' irritated to be honest, i mean what the hell has Bob Dylan, and more so 'All Along the Watchtower', to do with something as superficial and irrelevant as EVE.. i mean why do some people feel the need to associate such masterpieces with something as ridiculous as EVE..
After watching the vid, i think it does the song justice to some extent.. i still hate you tho.. it's brilliant, it raised the bar to a pretty mad level..

Well I'll start by saying that you really done a good jobe with the editing , you played well with the deth of field effect looks really nice on premium graphic , but unfortunately has no feeling , the atmosphere its kinda "low" maybe because of the audio part or maybe because has not enough sync ... some tiny ediiting mistakes but its ok ...in some places its a lil to much glowy (or maybe thats from the premium graphic)
I can't say the same thing about the content but its ok that too ... and btw to much camera shake , the camera moves are good but you could take more smoother camera moves , the song wasn't that "hard" and in some places the camera shake its unnecessary ...
The movie its more like a ccp vid than a memberworkshop , its like i;m watching all 3 empire age trailers ... anyway you done a nice job but like always you can do better

PS: Damn Kyoko, when you said you were going to make something 'different' I expected epicness but this outdoes that. I hope this will inspire others that have not yet dared to do so to try this movie style out in their work. Music is well chosen, subtle use of after effects to create a more dramatic mood, and the quality makes it all shine. If I really had to make a remark though it would be perhaps getting blinded a bit too much by missile hits / flaring stars.

I've added an MP4 (H.264) version for the enjoyment of our non-Windows folk. I'm having troubles with transcoding from the lossless original and so I'll offer this in place of MKV for now. It might be a bit slow in Quicktime for some but should play perfectly in software such as VLC. |

I was there for all of the filming (i finally got to use all those capitals for something ) and i swear it did not look that good! Not even close!
Your editing is stunning mate and even if i had not been in it and i had no idea who you were this would now be my new favorite eve Vid!
This takes us back to the old days of eve vids before all the CGI got in the way. All the new CCP movies with the CGI are cool and all but its not actual eve we play and for me that takes away from them considerably. This was made using nothing but the client we all use and that speaks far more about how great eve is than a CGI movie that all games these days have.

This vid exceeds what i thought was graphically possible with eve, any info on what hardware your using, any tips on what settings and methods you use are most welcome. 10/10 for everything, even tho I think you used the wrong font in the "data" text, but that's just personal. |

My rig is nothing special, it's just a high-end gaming rig as of when I moved to the UK and bought it about 4 months ago. Some of the components are as follows: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550, 4gb of 1600mhz DDR3, 1x EVGA GeForce GTX 280, and VelociRaptor hard drives for storage of applications as well as a separate 10k drive dedicated specifically to fraps and project files. I filmed in 1920x1200 with HDR and 4x multisampling on most of the time.

About 150 of pure editing and compositing I think, 20 hours filming with the Veto guys and probably another 10-20 filming on my own. I don't actually keep track of the time so I'm just guessing, but that seems to be the ballpark figure.

"All Along the Watchtower" is enough to make this brilliant!
(and for me to go watch Venal Beat Down / Assault of Venal III of Space Invader fame again)
It an awesome display of the beuty of EVE (when you got the hardware to run it  )
and the skill level here is really amazing, both editing wise and to get the some of the shots/angles.
But mostly because it takes a really good eye and vision to make it all fit together!
Very well done mate, I wish I could even try these days but no...why bother.

Bit of both. I can't explain it in brief, however. I might help AlleyKat piece together some of his wonderful flash tutorials when I get some spare time, although I haven't thrown this possibility his way yet. If that's the case though I might share some secrets.
Though I'm also teaching myself, so resources on the programs I used can be found with a simple Google search. |

hmmm not really blown away. You've a good computer to run it in full gfx, and the blur tools in adobe suite are used extensively.

I have to say, even when I saw the rough draft of this video before it was ready for release it almost made me have a baby.
The sheer amount of time and effort Koko put into editing this thing and shouting abuse at us on Ventrilo to get into formation properly, face the correct direction and stop being a pack of 'tards is well worth every beautiful frame of smooth AA high-defention goodness.
Just watched it again for like the 650 millionth time, it's kind of addicitive.

My second 9000 hugs for your awesomeness are for the bad-ass editing and compositing! Very cool sneaky comps in there, and I very much like the subtle use of AE to get the viewer in the action. Oh and I thought I'd not like the music but you've made it fit perfectly with the subtle SFX.

Either its too long, or the various parts of footage should be in a different sequence, because with this sort of thing it needs to escalate. Once the 'action' starts and things begin exploding you cant increase the excitement and then bring it back down, it has to continue building. In this i felt that after 75% of it was done or so, things just kind of evened out, and then just before the end they started becoming less frantic than they previously were.
This I suppose is a problem trying to fit it to a piece of music that has a set time already. What im assuming happened is that you finished your awesome video and then found out there was more audio left, so you pushed the very end back some and just inserted more filler footage.
Anyway its a great video and you really brought out how beautiful eve can be. I know that when you stare at the same thing for hours making adjustments everywhere you kind of start to lose perspective on it. There was a feeling of the video starting to let you off gently rather than just hammering away right up to the last second.

The escalation and subsequent deescalation and then re-escalation once again was a choice I made early on. I think you're talking about the sequence with the Rifters about half way through. The point I made was to keep the tension with the Caldari and Gallente as well (and yes, there are time inconstancies here if you have a critical eye) to make sure the excitement didn't drop off too much. As for the end of the video I'll be honest and say that I ran out of footage for a few seconds as explained below and really did not want to have to ask my awesome corpmates, champs though they are, to sit through another five hours of filming and me barking at them.
The two carriers exploding in Asakai at the end were placed early on but the two clips beforehand are indeed sparse. They were supposed to show that the Archon had been incapacitated or destroyed and that its fighters were stray, although it's hard to pick this up. I had rough storyboards that obviously showed what I wanted a bit better.
I decided I wanted the Amarr and Minmatar to fight first and end first with a certain ferociousness. I know this breaks things up a bit but it's a matter of taste as well. I'm a fairly patient person, and I guess what you're saying ultimately is that the pace should not be inaction-action-inaction-action but rather a linear or exponential function of particle/sprite system excitement. This is not something I'm unaware of when I make these but I enjoy debating these design decisions.

You know i totally missed out that you were showing two different fights there. had to watch it again (i like around 1:09~ or so by the way how the camera blacks out and the audio also kind of goes with it, i don't know if it was just luck how the sound got cut off in editing or if it was intentional but it was nice ^_^)
I watched it the second time and the video itself seemed much better.
Though i now have a different complaint to replace my first one with given what i now know
Given the music you picked, you shouldn't have tried to have anything 'end'. It should have been an ominous buildup and then massive explosive action that never even hints to the outcome. Just leaving people wondering as the credits roll.
Though i must say being that i did not notice anything having concluded the first time i watched through im not sure if that's a problem. or it could have been the music that kept me from realizing it. Or who knows.
Oh hell. Ive though too much about it to be able to have any accurate judgment now.  |

I don't think anything actually ends. Battles end, but the war ensues.
But yes, in all seriousness there was always the possibility -- due to the cyclical nature of the song itself -- of making the ending less conspicuous. I think that the final outcome was much less so than the original idea: a doomsday was going to go off in Asakai at the end. It was going to be done with some fancy compositing but I realized I couldn't even get a titan into lowsec.
Kale Ryoko (the guy who said my video was too fake) gave me a lot of feedback, and came to some of the same conclusions. I agreed with him most of the time but as with all art no one is going to walk away with the same exact interpretation or, in this case, perspective on possible further improvement. There is in fact a point where the artist has to put down his brush and say "it's done."
PS. Just FYI on how I work thus far: the sound effects are always added after the editing process. It took one day in Adobe Audition, and partially since I'm new to that program and also because it just sounded good, I was rather happy with the outcome.

After watching this video in youtube, I wasn't overly impressed; but after downloading the WMV (to watch it as it really should be watched), I was mightily impressed.
There are some great effects in there and I especially liked the mechanical effects of the guns be readied etc.

I put it on a flash drive and used my Xbox to watch on my room mate's HD plasma.
It was worth it. Very well done, camera work was extremely impressive. I had to assure my room mate that it was all ingame, and done without special dev tools.

this is most certainly one of the best game videos i've seen sofar. At the end, when i saw the "eve" logo I said: "yeah, sure, i knew it cant be a private project. This is high budget - profesional work done by a designer company for ccp" ... and then i saw this post and said ... god damn... so much tallent and skill for a single person...
i recently started doing my own eve-videos and artists like you are an inspiration and motivation for me.
I unterstand there is a lot of skill, tallent and experience involved and there is a steep learning curve for some of the tools. I wanted to ask you how you got the in game shots for some of your scenes. Is it ok to drop you a eve-mail about that ?

Awesome vid, fantastic visuals, kickass music.
my only crit is at times it seemed really dark, and it ssemed kinda like there was a sepia filter over everything. Too much brownish orange...could have used a little more color variation imo. I liked Push Eject's colors a lot more, but this one is better...directed?
anyway great job, i wanna learn how to make crazy vids like you :P

I will be starting production of my next video as soon as I finish moving into my new flat. It'll take longer than this one as I made a hard deadline for myself previously but my next video will have a softer restriction.
In the meantime, word is other machinima filmmakers have some really superb videos on the way out the door.

Absolutely awesome. I work in max and know how hard it is to get a good shot even when I have 100% control over the camera, the model, etc, and can do any shot I can pull out of my head. To do proffessional level camerawork using just the tools given in the game, edit, and (I'm assuming?) aftereffects to come out with that level of polish is truly exceptional.
I love the music. It really works on establising the sense of overpowering dread the imagery conjures up. I am a die-hard Jimi Hendrix fan, but his version would never have worked. Most people who don't listen to the lyrics think Watchtower is just a generic upbeat classic rock song, instead of the apocalyptic portent of doom Dylan wrote it to be. Not all battle scenes have to be edited to generic electric guitar Kenny Loggins butt rock or Disturbed screamo. Space is dark, chilling, without a shred of comfort, and I think Bear's version nails that (It WAS composed for another space battle, after all.)
Truly exceptional work, and if this is what you do in your FREE TIME for FUN, I'm sure you've either got, or are on your way to, a truly remarkable career in editing. I can easily see this format applied to telling say, the story of one of your corp's fleet ops and crash just as many servers when it comes out.
