As a dedicated minmatar pilot, i'd like to stay with projectile guns. I'm specializing around long range sniping so this post is to illustrate how this CANT be done with 1400 Artillery, which is supposed to be: "The ultimate artillery cannon. It hurls death and destruction over incredible distances." (taken from the gun's description).
Some facts:

Optimal + Falloff:

Now, this is hard data collected for all 3 guns (using the I version). Well. I use 1400mm's since a week or so. The problem for me is this: When I warp in at 60km that is considered low range somehow. When I use lead (long range) ammo I can't hit ****, so I use EMP ammo (short range) and then I make hits sometimes.
I need an option to warp in at 250km and be a true sniper with my 1400mm's. 60km is just too short a range.

Whwnever I use sniping with my rails I have 4 tracking mods on, primarily for optimal range but the tracking gets to be a whole lot better too. But the hits generally aren't big either. It's the number of guns and my rof of 5.6 seconds that does it for me.
edit: forget about warping in at 60 and hitting everything without needing tracking mods. Good range to hit now is 80km and equipping tracking comps/mods is key to good hits. With the 1400's low rof every hit counts, and every miss is a problem. Use bookmarks made with frigs if you want to snipe.

It's a bunch of Bulldung that you can't hit with lead, I hate that if it is true, at 60km you should have just as much accuracy with lead as you do emp the only difference should be that with emp you'd do more damage. It's complete crap if optimal range is in the equation that prevents you from hitting at close range, it's a complete penalty to someone that has trained sharpshooter 5 (and yes i have).
I'm not saying you're a liar, I'm saying that if what you say is true it's crap and is not a good way to code the accuracy of turrets.

Getting better hits in last couple of weeks with my 1400's with slight increase in frequency of wrecking hits i think. Wrecking hits around 1000-1200 with 2 tech2 damage mods and 2 tech2 tracking enhancers. Seem to be able to hit frigates and cruisers ok 40-60km which susrpises me (using emp of course). What concerns me is in fact the max 60km warp in which takes away the option of extreme range sniping.
On a (slightly) related point, the official line on the recent large turret changes is to fit some small/med turrets to the bs to counter smaller ship classes. However, not only do you sacrfice a large turret but you also fit a turret that gets no special bonus for med/small turrets on a bs. I can live with outfitting a bs for a specific role such as frigate killing in certain circumstances but the fact that the medium turrets i've equipped are less effective than on a cruiser is a bit of a bummer

Now I'm back in the Mega using 5 tracking mods and 3 damage mods, and doing hits of 200 at 120 km. Just have to sacrifice all armor and shield but it does hit and does kill. The fact that I have almost 2m in gunnery and cant take anything down without the assistance of EIGHT mods kinda ****es me off, but anyway thats the deal.
