I've just looked at the upcoming EVE retail box at the german amazon.de page. There's a list of the box content:
- EVE client - 60 days gametime (can also be added to an existing account or converted to plex) - Strategy Guide with exclusive online content - VIP pass (to invite friends) - a special ship (if you use the gametime to create a new account)
The text says "special ship" and not "exclusiv ship" so I guess when the expansion comes out this ship will be available to everyone. Or is it really an exclusive ship which will only be available for buyers of the retail box? First I thought its a new T3 ship but just think about it. The retail box is for new players - and to give them a free T3 ship which they can only fly after month of training doesn't make sense. So maybe it's a kind of shuttle. One more question: the box description says that you only get this new ship if you use the gametime to create a new account. Well, I wanted to buy this box but I don't want to waste 60 days of gametime for a second new account (which I really don't need) just to get this ship. Would be better if you also get this special ship if you add the 60 days GT from the retail box to an existing account.

Right. I guess most of the new players will lose it on their first days in the 1.0 starting system to gankers/can flippers or other dirty tricks. |

should you refer to this EVE Online on Amazon.de I have to tell you that this is a outdated box art which was done before the features for the box where even defined.
Sorry but you spend your conspiracy power on a fake.
About the Game Time, I asked around a few weeks back and nothing was decided at this time but I was told that there will be a Dev-Blog about this before the box gets released which will explain everything.
So unfortunately more infos SOON(tm) again. |

Edited by: Disteeler on 03/02/2009 13:16:00 From the Game website. The guide sounds very nice.
Eve Online Package Contains:
- 60 Day Game Time û Useable by both new and current players.
- Instant War Access û Retail box buyers will receive an in-game certificate that will give them instant access to Factional Warfare, while other users have to spend considerable time earning the right to fight for the factions.
- Career Guide û For the first in the history of EVE, CCP will offer players goals in the form of what career they want to pursue and the inside advice on how to get there. This might become the biggest thing in this box if this works well.
- VIP Pass û Players are told how they can invite their friends and give them VIP Access to EVE Online in the form an extended trial and if the friend becomes a subscriber the player will get a 30 day free game time added to their account.
- Special Edition Ship û Players will get an exclusive ship in-game. It is special type of a shuttle that is ideal to move things around due to much increased cargo space. This is the first time CCP has created an exclusive ship, so we believe our current player base will be very interested in this.

I think that shuttle will be available for all players. Notice how they differentiate between retail buyers and players. For example, the VIP pass seems like the buddy program and the guide surely it will also be in the evelopedia

For, like, what, couple of hours and some extra ISK into your wallet OR almost instantly but with a slight minus in your wallet ?
Quote: A shuttle with more cargohold for peeps who buy the boxed version, BS. Well maybe I jumped the gun on this one.
Yes, you did. Not like a 30k ISK frigate wouldn't be nearly as good, probably better due to the fact you can actually use some modules on it.
Quote: I guess the glory days of Eve are behind us, well when they start losing all the veterans in a year or two, and change everything back and we all return ,ill be happy
Yes, EVE is dying, where have I heard that before ?
Quote: now get my weapon grouping to work.
It's working, you either have a slight visual bug which will be fixed by logging off and back on again, OR a bad case of proper usage of new feature noobitis.

From the Amazon.de page:
In deinen ersten 30 Tagen k÷nnen Sie, wenn Sie einen neuen Account erstellen, direkt an den Fraktions-Schlachten teilnehmen.
Roughly translated: In the first 30 days - if you create a new account - you can take part in factional warfare.
So it's just a kind of factional warfare preview for the new players limited to 30 days to show them some features of EVE. I guess if they want to continue with FW after these 30 days they have to grind standing as any other player.

Edited by: Ki Tarra on 03/02/2009 15:45:21 I agree with Akita T, even if (as CCP Sputnik said they are likely to change) all of the features are added as stated, they are hardly significant.
The "special" ship will likely be similar to, if not actually, an Apotheosis. There is no reason to believe that CCP will be giving out State Issue Ravens with every purchase.
Giving instant access to Faction Warfare is also insignificant: the old tutorial missions used to give you a 10% faction standings bonus for killing a couple of training drones and flying a package to the next system. I am sure that they can figure out a balanced way of giving new players a 5% faction standings so that they can jump right into faction warfare.

Don't try and dilute the arguement quoting Ships that were REWARDED for INGAME events.
special "bonus ships", "Vip Pass's", "2x the rewards" and all the other rubbish that is being considerd is outragous and i think players have a right to complain about these 'features' being added to the game.
Its not just ccps marketting group that has control over this box set, its ATARI's aswell, and theyll be trying to weasel whatever they can out of ccp to make their box set as apealing to the general public as possible.
Will i be eating my hat when the new box set is released? probably not, the last patch proves that ccp want to move closer to a system where you buy your ingame items with oog currency. The infrastructure is in place now.

Read the patch notes. Its not like any bugs were fixed last patch, it was simply CCP upgrading their website for a better $ -> Isk transfer system.

In essence I agree with you, based on the fact that as a heavy-gametime player I want to be rewarded for it. Just like older MMO's had their 'hero levels' etc reward for those that just kept grinding xp and killing npcs that gave virtually np xp for months and months.
But what you're asking for in EVE is already happening. We had a few ingame items handed out in events, and you know.. there was a reason the RP events stopped. Or so the saying goes, for those who want a tinfoil hat on. Plus the snowball launchers 2005, that didn't come back until now in 2008. Plus the Apotheosis.
And to bring some more meat on the table; when I, and many more, started, we had a few thousand skillpoints. Players today start with nearly a million. Missions when I started was impossible, you either trained learning (long perspective) or you trained straight for combat (missions, pvp, ratting), or you went to do mining. Players today can do all of that. It was also damn hard to solo missions higher than lv3, so we had more reasons to do mining, ratting, etc, while now a 3 week old player can run lv4's.. which partially is because new players have access to something we didn't: information (it's a valuable source/asset, often overlooked).
If we look at what I posted just above, it's pretty obvious this is not "fair" at all, and things are alot easier for players today. They get for free what we older players worked for. But at the same time, we have something priceless that they lack - experience. At the same time, it makes it easier for them to get into the game. I have to say the 3 months it took me to train basic t1 cruiser skills same time I did learning training, sucked balls. CCP wouldn't get many new players if they did that today.
Overall.. no, it's not fair. No, it's in much sense 'rude' to older players. But it has a point, and it does give us more targets, and players to pray on.. ship-pvp and market-pvp wise. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Sorry, but the new "special" ship would not be enough to make me spend money on a boxed set. Other than maybe for memory sake, still not really. I do not care if it is a shuttle with a cargo hold of Obelisk.
But, what I will do is pop them whenever I see them, even in Empire with some suicide Caracals, just to see some freebie go boom.

Ah, yes. I remember hunting AFK Apotheosis' in high security space on my old mission Alt with a few suicide Omens I'd fitted and insured for the occasion.
Best spending of built up security status ever
(If there is a "novelty ship" with the retail box, then big deal! I "lol" at the drama squad soiling their pantaloons.)

Yes, you did. Not like a 30k ISK frigate wouldn't be nearly as good, probably better due to the fact you can actually use some modules on it.

It's working, you either have a slight visual bug which will be fixed by logging off and back on again, OR a bad case of proper usage of new feature noobitis.

I for one will not by the box, cause I have EVE already, why buy a box for it? :) I am sure that fansy new ship will be on contracts anyways for anyone to aquire ;)
Last time I checked theres alot of T1 ships kicking your ass. Harbinger comes to mind.

So where is the (mis)information about the ship coming from? Did they just guess it because they saw it in the pictures, or was it written on the box? How can there be text on the box if the features aren't even defined yet? |

About the Game Time, I asked around a few weeks back and nothing was decided at this time but I was told that there will be a Dev-Blog about this before the box gets released which will explain everything.
So unfortunately more infos SOON(tm) again.
Ok, well let me ask you a non conspiracy question, assuming you're at liberty to say.
If the retail box really is coming out with special ingame gifts, can we buy the box and apply those gifts to an account already in existence?

And if it is possible, would it be some kind of key code to punch in similar to a PLEX? Taking it a bit further, would it be possible to sell that code ingame?
It would be a great way for a newbie to start with some decent cash. Sell off their gift ship code to a veteran player in exchange for isk.

I'm not worried much about a shuttle with a bigger hold, but offering special items for real life money leads towards a slippery slope. There's a ton of MMORGs out there already that are "free to play" but to really use them you need to buy virtual items for your character with real money. As in "Walking skill? Sure, $20! Looking around skill? Just $25 on our web site! A sword? Cannot be found in game, but you can buy any number for $45!".
So right now you get a special shuttle alongside the subscription for your money. No big deal. But what if CCP sees that it worked really well and decides to put a special 50km 20 pts Warp Disruptor into the next box? A State Issue Raven? A DDD that can be mounted onto a cruiser hull? An insta-locking battleship hull? And to ensure that only the "worthy" people (iow, those who paid cash) get the items they can not be transferred in any way.
Selling EVE items for real money might lead to a situation where you are REQUIRED to spend real life money to be able to compete. So far CCP has avoided that, actually fought against that as much as possible, but this could be a reversal of that course. THAT's what worries me here. Lately CCP has made several moves that seem to solely focus on increasing revenue, and this might be the start of a new business model.
Of course, everything said here needs to be taken with a ladle of salt and with a tinfoil hat on. |

I never mentioned Guild Wars - basically I only know it exists and that's all. There's a lot of MMORGs out (mainly with some anime theme) that do not require you to pay anything to play (DL client, create account, play), but where you have to buy magic gear from the publisher for real money. The games are balanced so you can do some testing and wetting of your feet using the free content, but after some time you'll run into problems that can only be solved by gear you need to buy.
Basically the publisher is not charging for the game time itself but for the content and is financing his expenses that way - applied to EVE it would mean no monthly rates, but all T2 and faction modules need to be bought for RL currency from CCP.

well honestly I don't believe those are real. Infact I think all of this is silly and stupid to talk about after a dev reply :P
VIP pas is for factional warfare. That's great. In fact I hope ALL new players can get into factional warfare. In fact I wish it was forced once your trail was over.
Double rewards? Yeah that would be bull****. But no one is bring that up and I'm not defending it.

Appliable to both new and existing accounts it seems. Will be a nice little perk indeed for an existing player. Nice new unique ship and 2 months game time they can sell for about 700 mil to fund the instant access faction war that hopefully gets some loving for m10. Sounds like win to me.

Well if they included a 60 day GTC in the box then expect the prices of GTC's to fall as current players will be buying the boxed version just for GTC's which will be cheaper than the ones sold from the online retailers.
So I think the boxed version will sell tons for months to come but the majority of buyers will be the current playerbase getting their hands on GTC's.
Oh and in a few months or so when the retail price has been reduced to budget expect a landslide of GTC prices. |

I'd like to point out, a few years back there used to be things called Graduation certificates, that if you actually completed the tutorial all noobs got. Now these allowed you to do a free ISM for what ever faction you did the tutorial for. Which if are still around today are pretty much instant access to FW, if CCP is introducing instant access to FW it's just gunna be reintroducing Graduation Certificates which were/are a game mechanic. |

Hopefully they'll be able to be contracted/traded like other ingame items and you'll be able to buy them from other players like other unique ships (apotheosis etc.). That way people who enjoy collecting ships but don't want/can't pay for the retail box can obtain one. |
