Just purchased a video card and a monitor as my laptop will soon not be able to run eve anymore. That means not going over to my friends house and being able to play. Also many people will not get to see the game so I will not be able to recruit more people into it as easy. Everytime I go somewhere with my laptop people ask me. "Whats that your playing." Most people have no idea about EvE. Anyway.. wish I didn't have to spend half my tax return to keep playing. At least it will look nice now.

Edited by: Cors on 14/02/2009 00:34:38 A 30$ Graphics card can do you.
And any monitor out there will do you. Even a 10 year old CRT.
Why are you complaining?
Computer games as a hobby are NOT cheap. They are cheaper then going to the bar once a month though.
High speed internet connection 20$/month Computer hardware per year, 250$(You can get by with less if you are intelligent with your hardware upgrades, or you can buy a whole new computer once ever 4 years. Eve Account 15-20$/month.
That's 60$/month total for an entry level EVE player long term. That's ONE trip to the bar a month. That's less then most of us pay for our cell phones, or our cable TV. Hell, that's only 2 Pizza Orders.
If you can't afford this, then you need to have a serious look at your finances.
As for recruitment of new players, not an issue after it hits the stores. We'll have WAY more then enough players then.

If you spent $300 US for a video card just to play EvE MAN< are you EVER doing it wrong.
For the Premium Lite client, you need a Shader Model 2 card. Think Geforce 7000 series, they can be had for $30-$40 dollars pretty much anywhere.
Did you even bother to check to see if your laptop's video card even supports Shader 2? Many do - any of the Gefoce Go series, or the ATI Radeon To Go series do...
To make a long story short, if you spent $300 just on EvE you failed hard. Really hard. If not - then quityer*****in, it wasn't just on EvE :)

I think my next PC upgrade is goingto cost me around $300 total.
This excludes the 90 I spent on a 9800gt recently that I'm going to just use on the next hardware setup. |

Agree. I do find computer games a rather cheap hobby however - especially eve online. No fancy hardware required, no expensive joysticks, throttles, foot pedals etc. Runs perfectly on a 3 year old computer.
If I only say one day a month: I'm gonna play eve-online instead of going out to a bar, go to the movies + drink/hamburgers or take a trip on my motorbike I can easily pay for my monthly account.

Look lad, you could go to the computerstore and tell them you wanted the most cheapest and oldest graphic card they have in store, and you would get a card working with EVE online premium lite client! 20-40 dollar or pound would be a likely price I think. Here in Norway I could get such a card for 300 kroner!
What card did you get by the way??

Tell her it's cheaper then you going to the strip club a few times. :) It's why my wife doesn't mind my EVE habit. She knows where I am at most times. Unlike he coworkers, who have husbands who head to the bar a few nights a week with buddies..

I wish high speed internet was only 20 USD where I live, sadly its 60 USD :(, dial up is only 20 USD, yeah I know kinda screwey but such is life where there is no competition here in the sticks :(.
I probably didn't have to upgrade my computer but I have though. At least now I'll get to see the premium graphics once I can get eve downloaded on that computer.
Now if only I could get high speed internet here for a discount, of course what is available here is often hurt by latency issues due to lack of proper infrastructure.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts.

disturbing that:
- A) You attribute EVE of all games to the reason for an upgrade - B) You don't find the fact you are so behind the curve a clue you really aren't cut out for bleeding edge computer games as hobby - C) You took the time to post yet another whine about progress - D) You didn't think to just upgrade your laptop to something newer if that's the way YOU play?
You see, no one else cares about how you see the World. The majority see it that they have a pretty kick ass sweet gaming rig and they ALSO play eve.
My point is, to use a pun, you come across as 'the tail wagging the dog'.

It's called www.newegg.com or www.frys.com
'Top of the line' is subjective. A 5 year old desktop and video card is pretty middle of the road for eve. Even three year old hardware is more than enough to run dual clients on a pair of monitors at 1900x1200 (That's what I'm running.). |

I had my last desktop for 7 years, and it was below-mid range when I bought it. And now I have a good computer that will last me for the next 8 years. $1200 / 8 = $150 a year. $150 / 12 = $12.50 a month. That's less than 0.50 cents a day for:
Intel Quad Core Q6600 BFG Nvidia 9800GTX OC+ 4GB DDR2 RAM @ 1066mhz
I can run 4 premium Eve-Online clients with this setup.
A computer is an investment. You should be happy that Eve inspires you to expand ;)

Wahhhh, technology is advancing.
Wahhhh, I don't have the easy road.
Wahhhh, I have to spend money on a hobby that requires spending money.
Wahhhh, Wahhhh.
Do you call your ISP every month and whine about having to pay the bill?
Do you whine and moan at the mechanic when he gives you a car repair bill, saying you payed for the car and having to pay to keep it running isn't fair?
Shutup you sniveling little tool.
I bought a new CPU and Video card for my 2nd PC that used to have trouble running the classic client. I spent under $250 for the pair. It now runs premium without a hiccup. I did this upgrade when the SM Upgrade was announced.
