Select "Advanced camera menu" in the Display and Graphics tab of the esc screen. Then when you right click an object you can select "parent" and "interest", which locks the camera at the parent ship but automatically tracks to follow the interest....

I figured out my problem. I had the "Enhance ingame AA-setting" box ticked. Without it ticked it runs perfectly.

My EvE appears to crash randomly when at gates (not necessarily loading them). Tried it with every cache level and with HDR off, but no difference. Doesn't happen all the time either, just occasionally. 8800gts core2duo 6600 xp
