"the asteroids are now going to communicate their value through brilliant graphical treatments"
Does this only mean the size of the rock will decrease as each cycle of mining pulls ore out of it? Or is it just "starting value = starting size", and the rock goes from full to *poof*.

Edited by: Rexthor Hammerfists on 04/03/2009 20:32:39 Looks nice and god job there.
About some bistot rocks here and there in lowsec, basicly not a bad idea imo and it has my support (for what its worth) It does make it painfully obvious that quite a few 0.0 regions are very underdeveloped, tho
Take Pure Blind as example, since i live there ;). It has similar or only slightly better rats and mining grounds then the better lowsec systems - while pureblind has all the risks that go with a 0.0 region (and way too many npc sov systems for no reason)
My suggestion would be to make the ratting and mining in all 0.0 systems profitable, some better some worse but all alot more profitable then the ones you find in pure blind currently, or outer ring, or providence etc.
Additionally to that reducing or cutting all of the lootdrops from missions (loot but not salvage) and increasing the isk rewards accordingly, would increase the flow of isk from empire in echange from goods from 0.0 and lowsec - and all the good stuff that comes with it (ratting and mining content and ppl that kill them, transporting those goods and ppl that raid them etc.)
This plays nicely with the moon mining addition in wormholes, which will cut into the profitcs of alliances holding rich moon space. Then instead of an alliance getting stupid rich, the wealth is more spread between 0.0 entities and the individuals that fight for their space and ressources - risk vs reward holds up once again.

Those new roids are looking fine and the dev team did a good job in carefully renovating the current Eve graphics. It is something better, yet the 'feeling' of how a roid belt looks like in Eve got preserved.
However ...
...from the looks on the test server:
1) Some of the low end ores (Kernite, Pyrox, Plag) should become a bit more distinguishable, they look to much alike.
2)When I warp to a belt and appear in the belt, the roids are popping up one by one as if they need to get constructed first and the calculation is not fast enough (could be my graphics card though?). This is quite ... ugly.
3) The ice is nice. Maybe it just needs to be a tad more crystallic, sometimes and at certain angles it looks more like plastic. At other angles it just looks fantastic.
4) The low sec ores are fine, but truely stunning are some of the 0.0 ores - especially dark ochre. That dark ochre is a masterpiece of art and most beautiful. Good contrast and it really looks like there are crystals embedded in the roid.
5) Other low sec/0.0 ores could be improved even more, though they are good already. Especially the hedbergite, spodumain, crokite, mercoxit roids should have more translucent parts and the specular lights shouldn't cover most of the crystals.
6) Some roids are rotating, others are not. Also the direction of the rotation is different, this gives the whole belt a nice look. Excellent idea!
All in all, nice work

Most miners I know watch (Web)TV while mining to make it vaguely interesting. That's tough competition for the rocks to beat.

I take it you're still finishing the very last ones? Some ices still use the veldspar models on SISI, for example glare crust. ... and I really think they should boost T2 plate HP.

I was just thinking and talking about it a few days before I saw them on Singularity!!!
I also thought/said, that CCP should add an effect where the asteroids break up into small pieces before disappearing when they're depleted instead of just disappearing instantly *hint hint*

No true game play changes to mining were introduced in regards to the asteroids graphical overhaul. The new art does however give players a much clearer idea of what exactly it is they are mining.

Edited by: Toawa on 04/03/2009 23:14:33 Yeah, they look great, but...
1. Despite what you say, I still have trouble distinguishing some of the low end ores; they still seem to look the same.
2. Some of the larger ore asteroids are rendered as one big boulder surrounded by shards of rock. The problem is, it's hard to tell what is a shard and what is a separate, small asteroid, and clicking on the shards don't select the mother asteroid. (This is an extension of a problem that's always been there; in order to select an asteroid by clicking on it, you have to click in or near the center focal point; miss that and you don't get anything. This is particularly annoying when you're trying to right click on the asteroid to select "Show on map")

LOoking good, not that I spend much time admiring the rocks I mine.
Of course, the rock fields are one of those graphic assets which could stand some procedural modelling to ensure that up close no two rocks looked the same.

While I welcome this change as the graphics are a bit dated in the roid belts, I am curious when CCP will go about fixing mining?
Let's look at a scenario that shows why mining is completely broken: There is a rock in a belt with 600 m3 of ore in it. A hulk arrives, mining 1500 m3/ minute. He targets the rock and engages his lasers. A minute and a half later, an osprey shows up mining only 600 m3/ minute. He targets his lasers and fires. one minute later, the rock pops and the osprey has 600 m3 of ore. The hulk (who should have popped the rock before the osprey arrived) has the target disappear, gets no ore, and his lasers don't even deactivate.

If this is your definition of "completely broken", then you have a lot to learn about this game. A solution is already in the game. The Hulk deactivates strip miner before Osprey does. It's that simple. Eve gives advantages to players who concentrate, prepare, and play the game. Word up to the Osprey pilot for knowing the game mechanics.
Looking forward to the boost to low-sec.

You've answered your own question right there.
Contrast this to: "The Dominix (who should have activated his armour repairer before going into structure) pops because he wasn't paying attention."
I keep telling people that the way to beat macro miners is to mine the asteroids out from under them.
