Exploration-minded capsuleers,
Apocrypha brings us a new probing system, and if you're the type who likes to explore, and especially if you're the type who wants to hunt down wormholes and take a few pot shots at Sleepers while grabbing their Tech 3 treasures, then CCP Greyscale's blog is for you! |

Cool stuff. I'm glad I've never bothered to learn probing, now this new way won't confuse me as much as I have no idea what's different

The new system is awesome.
Sometimes its hard to track down a specific signature if there are plenty of them in one system, but all in all very nice.

Yup, nice blog and a nice scanning mechanic in the end. The people complaining it's too easy and the people complaining it's too hard suggest a nice balance has been reached. ------------------ Ironfleet.com |

Very cool. I got on the test server about a month ago and couldn't buy anything so I never got to test much. I do have 1 question....
Can you launch Core probes out of Expanded Probe Launchers or just the core launcher?

As a possible recoding of the system scanner array, why not consider making it work like the new probing system.
What I'm thinking is this:
Have the probe launcher automatically launch 4 system scanning probes out into the system at random co-ordinates in a pattern that will cover the solarsystem. Give these probes a lifetime similar to or the same as normal combat probes, or even just let the array use combat probes. Allow the probes to be scannable just like normal ones. Destroying the probes would decrease the accuracy of the scan results in some way.
Allow the array to be activated remotely by anyone with the proper starbase maintenance roles so it can only be turned on when needed.
This would give similar functionality to the current array but it would also give the attacking fleet's support ships something to do away from the main battle at a pos and would encourage smaller scourmishes instead of everyone just blobbing the pos.
Just kind of a brainstorm I had when I read the blog.

How do you find one particular site if there are many of them in the same vicinity?

For me, this is hands-down the most exciting thing about Apocrypha (with skill queues being second to top). Yeah, sure, I'm boring. I wonder how long scanning will take now?
By the way, what does the "10 days ago" refer to? I didn't spot anything on the EVE news feeds about this, although the full Apocrypha trailer shows wormholes suddenly appearing everywhere.

Guess it has something to do with large quantities of a rare unstable element which does bad things *hints at the chronicles*
Looks interesting so far. Makes exploration much more enjoyable compared to the old system. About “combat probing” … good questions time will tell.

Been looking froward to this expansion, I've always enjoyed probing...
I've gotta say tho - I wish you guys would let stuff go obsolete rather than carte blanche modifying existing ship equipment.
Why not let players upgrade the launchers in active use themselves at a repair shop should they wish to do so? I know you what to keep your database manageable and 'obsolete tech' does not lend itself to that - but hey - your telling a story here with your game design and magicing everything overnight just does not sit well with my sense of order.
The march of technology is an opportunity to extend the game worlds immersive realism. If the old scanning mechanics have been completely binned then fair enough - sick a big obsolete sign over the graphic akin to the 'Wanted' bounty signs. Markets react and stuff can be trashed n recycled you know.
Just a thought. Not a priority.

Nice read Greyscale. I look forward to this new system on TQ.
I do have one question though, since there seems to be a HUGE ommision from the blog.
What if any changes to the astrometrics bonuses that higher levels of the Cov-Ops skill, get you when flying a Cov-Ops frig? Is it still going to be a duration modifier? or will this also get changed to strength modifier? --

I guess my above question applies to all the t1 astrometrics frigs aswell.
Growing up Amarr, I never had one.....till I was already too "old" for them. --

"The Sisters versions will also stick around, and get a scan strength bonus as durations for all launchers are now 10 seconds."
Last time I checked the Sister's Core launcher did not have a strength bonus. The Sister's Recon launcher is useless on TQ now. It is just a named verson of the recon launcher. Are you going to keep the Sister's Core launcher as a worthless item or will you give it a Strength bonus so it might see some use?

That's a lot of new info, thanks for the work. Will try to finally find a wormhole later. I have an important question for 0.0 and lowsec missionrunners:
1. Will it be easier or harder to probe missionrunners in mission deadspace with the new combat scanning system ? That is finding a battleship in a mission deadspace pocket that stays there for 10-50 minutes.
2. Will a) the sig radius b) the sensor strenght of the missionrunner ship or c) the circimstance that the missionrunner ships uses drones play a role with the new probing system ?

I'll have to try it. It's different from the actual system, but I guess it's better. I'll see it in a couple of days. ----

I used this yesterday, and it's awesome. Without any instructions at all, it was very intuitive. There was a funny moment, when I didn't know how to access the probe placement view (was warping around dropping probes), I was thinking .. CCP should visualize this, surely it could be easier .. maybe if I look at the map view .. hey what does "Toggle" option do? .. Very cool!
So my only feedback would be add the "Show probe map" button onto the actual scanning interface, since it's not obvious to the user they need to go to the map and toggle.

Open scanner, button all the way to the right that looks like a map and says "Map" when you hover over it. Press button.
