Exploration-minded capsuleers,
Apocrypha brings us a new probing system, and if you're the type who likes to explore, and especially if you're the type who wants to hunt down wormholes and take a few pot shots at Sleepers while grabbing their Tech 3 treasures, then CCP Greyscale's blog is for you! |

The new system is awesome.
Sometimes its hard to track down a specific signature if there are plenty of them in one system, but all in all very nice.

Can you launch Core probes out of Expanded Probe Launchers or just the core launcher?

As a possible recoding of the system scanner array, why not consider making it work like the new probing system.
What I'm thinking is this:
Have the probe launcher automatically launch 4 system scanning probes out into the system at random co-ordinates in a pattern that will cover the solarsystem. Give these probes a lifetime similar to or the same as normal combat probes, or even just let the array use combat probes. Allow the probes to be scannable just like normal ones. Destroying the probes would decrease the accuracy of the scan results in some way.
Allow the array to be activated remotely by anyone with the proper starbase maintenance roles so it can only be turned on when needed.
This would give similar functionality to the current array but it would also give the attacking fleet's support ships something to do away from the main battle at a pos and would encourage smaller scourmishes instead of everyone just blobbing the pos.
Just kind of a brainstorm I had when I read the blog.

For me, this is hands-down the most exciting thing about Apocrypha (with skill queues being second to top). Yeah, sure, I'm boring. I wonder how long scanning will take now?
By the way, what does the "10 days ago" refer to? I didn't spot anything on the EVE news feeds about this, although the full Apocrypha trailer shows wormholes suddenly appearing everywhere.

Guess it has something to do with large quantities of a rare unstable element which does bad things *hints at the chronicles*
Looks interesting so far. Makes exploration much more enjoyable compared to the old system. About “combat probing” … good questions time will tell.

Been looking froward to this expansion, I've always enjoyed probing...
I've gotta say tho - I wish you guys would let stuff go obsolete rather than carte blanche modifying existing ship equipment.
Why not let players upgrade the launchers in active use themselves at a repair shop should they wish to do so? I know you what to keep your database manageable and 'obsolete tech' does not lend itself to that - but hey - your telling a story here with your game design and magicing everything overnight just does not sit well with my sense of order.
The march of technology is an opportunity to extend the game worlds immersive realism. If the old scanning mechanics have been completely binned then fair enough - sick a big obsolete sign over the graphic akin to the 'Wanted' bounty signs. Markets react and stuff can be trashed n recycled you know.
Just a thought. Not a priority.

I do have one question though, since there seems to be a HUGE ommision from the blog.
What if any changes to the astrometrics bonuses that higher levels of the Cov-Ops skill, get you when flying a Cov-Ops frig? Is it still going to be a duration modifier? or will this also get changed to strength modifier? --

"The Sisters versions will also stick around, and get a scan strength bonus as durations for all launchers are now 10 seconds."
Last time I checked the Sister's Core launcher did not have a strength bonus. The Sister's Recon launcher is useless on TQ now. It is just a named verson of the recon launcher. Are you going to keep the Sister's Core launcher as a worthless item or will you give it a Strength bonus so it might see some use?

That's a lot of new info, thanks for the work. Will try to finally find a wormhole later. I have an important question for 0.0 and lowsec missionrunners:
1. Will it be easier or harder to probe missionrunners in mission deadspace with the new combat scanning system ? That is finding a battleship in a mission deadspace pocket that stays there for 10-50 minutes.
2. Will a) the sig radius b) the sensor strenght of the missionrunner ship or c) the circimstance that the missionrunner ships uses drones play a role with the new probing system ?

I used this yesterday, and it's awesome. Without any instructions at all, it was very intuitive. There was a funny moment, when I didn't know how to access the probe placement view (was warping around dropping probes), I was thinking .. CCP should visualize this, surely it could be easier .. maybe if I look at the map view .. hey what does "Toggle" option do? .. Very cool!
So my only feedback would be add the "Show probe map" button onto the actual scanning interface, since it's not obvious to the user they need to go to the map and toggle.

I haven't tried scanning down ships on SiSi yet, but I have tried scanning down sites.
First impression is that this is Win, with some caveats.
The good news is, scanning is no longer a matter of hoping you have your probes placed right and hitting "scan" over and over praying for a hit. You are active for the entire process, moving probes around and refining the pattern until you find what you're looking for. It is no longer this life sucking annoyance.
The bad news is, the positioning arrows are a bit of a pain. You're constantly trying to get your view to show you the axis you're trying to adjust. Often, you "miss" the arrows and end up adjusting the scan range instead of moving the probes.
In time, I'm sure we'll get used to moving probes around. I'm sure the GUI will slowly be improved as feedback comes in as well.
All in all, the new scanning system is a vast improvement over the old one. The randomness is gone, and the system has a more fun feel to it.

I'm surprised that the System Scanner is being killed by this - it seems easy enough to make it stay relevant. It takes next to no fitting, so just have it come up with a complete and reliable list of what scannables are in system - "Found: 2 wormholes, 3 belts, 1 ship". Full list, but with minimal or no range information. If anyone wants to invest the token amount of POS fitting into it to make it run, that'd seem to be a natural task for it to do, and perfectly compatible with the new system.
That said, this is still a great improvement from the looks of it, and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action.

I'm downloading today's patch (the daily sisi patch i like to call it), so they might have changed it, but it's probably still affecting scan strength.
edit: just finished installing new patch and my helios does give +10% to scan strength per covert ops skill level. Also would like to say I love the new scanning system also Just need to practice with the probe widgets now...)

I noticed a strange, imo bug in the scanning system, tho it may be intended
i scanned down a site in wh space and got a 100% hit. When i warped there, there was nothing, i scanned again and then the hit was 16k km away so i warped there, again nothing, so i narrowed down the probes and scanned again (they werent at .25 AU for the first hits) and then i got the right hit.
So even if you get a 100% hit with 4 probes that doesnt mean you found it, it has still deviation.
IMO that should be changed so that when you get 100% hit you really have found it

Well, they could remove the auto-warp of the probes, or the visual spheres showing their range on the map. But it wouldnt really make it any harder, it would just make it take longer as you'd have to warp manually, create safespots, warp back, drop a probe, pick up a calculator and work out the ranges, if they overlap etc..
Imo a visual interface isnt making it too easy, it's just removing the stoneage methods of doing it in the past. Stuff shouldnt be extra annoying just for the sake of being annoying. If things can be simplified in terms of displaying ranges and such, they should.

A little bit of feedback. So far the syestem is very good, except for one minor issue so far.
It would be nice if you could select to not change the ranges of the probes thru the system map, but only the Scanner interface.
A many times while zoomed in to rotate view or something, I end up changing the range of one of my probes. The more complex the layout of your probes, the more difficult this is to correct.

The problem I have with the new system is I'm betting it's gonna get old very fast. The old system had you waiting around for a result didn't require much action or thought. The new system has you actively fiddling with little arrows for a lot less time but still doesn't require much thought. In fact it requires barely any thought after you've done it a few times as there is barely any difference between sites anywhere in eve. Probing is pretty much reduced to a case of the first part of that blog repeated again and again and again and again like some sort of factory worker and after you've done the exact same thing a few hundred times all the fun has gone and your left with a bunch of fiddly little arrows.
Imo if you wanted to change it you should have made scanning require some thought, made ppl think about the process they are going through. Possibly added things similar to the stuff in the wormhole devblog where emissions from the sun could effect your ship or something like that.

Quote: This structure doesn't fit into the new quadrilateration system as it's only one location. While there are ways we could make it work, a check on TQ suggests that it's very rarely used so we decided the coding time for overhauling it would be better used making the rest of the system more awesome.
Lets analyze this for a second.
1. Only people in the corp of the pos in question can use it. 1.1 Which requires sov 2 to even online the bugger. 2. Only people in said corp with the proper roles can use it. 3. Only people in said corp with said roles and Anchoring 5 and starbase defense(aka posgunner) can use it.
What? No wonder nobody uses the damn things. They are uber hard to use.
How about you make it so anyone with the starbase password and/or access can actually use it.
Then people would use it like mad. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |

Heres a little info for everyone, i've spent about 6 hours + on the new system now. As you use the probe positioning boxes you gradually get faster at doing it, the only issues i had is when grabbing the probe positioning boxes is when you have lots of probes out close together and your working fast, you grab the probe range circle a lot, i suggest that this adjustment method is removed since i always use the scanner window to change the range as i acctually know what im changing it too.
Next people keep complaning about dealing with the arrows on the boxes when moving them, THIS IS FOR ALL TO NOTE, you can grab the boxes themselfs and freely move them on the axis you are holding them which leaves the arrows for the more fiddly adjustments when you need to perfect your persitions.
And lastly for now, the only other issue i've had was in wormhole space were i spent all my time, EVERYTHING other than planets and moons is a cosmic signature, this becomes a serious issue. When setting up several probes to triangulate the entire system i was in i had upwards of 26 signatures (you will see when you try). This causes problems as your scanning as you can confuse other close by signatures and start following them instead of the first one you were scanning, you can endup running after several sigs or losing all of them.

I agree with you here, making it more difficult just giving you a bad interface, is bad design. However they could have made it more difficult just increasing a bit more the deviation. Not the maximum deviation, mind you, there are math reasons why it can't be increased from what it is now. But the decay of deviation with sig str might be made much harsher without any problem.

By the way, the onboard scanner is still functioning fine too, just forgot to mention it in the blog.
Originally by: Artimis Scout Can you launch Core probes out of Expanded Probe Launchers or just the core launcher?
Yes. Expanded launcher does everything in one package.
Originally by: Minsc As a possible recoding of the system scanner array, why not consider making it work like the new probing system.
With regards to the scanning array, we did have ways we could make it work, and we are fully aware that part of the reason it's not widely used is that the user experience is not at all optimized - the reason we decided to retire it is mainly just down to the fact that the time spent upgrading it would be time not fixing defects in the core system, and we decided that we'd rather go for polish over reimplementing/upgrading functionality used by very small numbers of players.
Originally by: Treelox What if any changes to the astrometrics bonuses that higher levels of the Cov-Ops skill, get you when flying a Cov-Ops frig? Is it still going to be a duration modifier? or will this also get changed to strength modifier?
Yes, I should've mentioned this Covert Ops ships and the astrometrics frigates both get strength improvement bonuses of 5% and 10% respectively.
Originally by: Iridescent Moon "The Sisters versions will also stick around, and get a scan strength bonus as durations for all launchers are now 10 seconds."
The strength bonus was implemented for the Core launcher on SiSi a few days after we did it on the Expanded one.

1) Depends how good you are with the system I suspect 2) Sig radius and sensor strength both still play a part. I don't think drones are as significant as they used to be.
Originally by: Jowen Datloran Are exploration sites still within 4 AU of a planet or can they now spawn all over the system?
We've got a bit more freedom over distribution radii now.
Originally by: Serenity Steele So my only feedback would be add the "Show probe map" button onto the actual scanning interface, since it's not obvious to the user they need to go to the map and toggle.

Yes.

i scanned down a site in wh space and got a 100% hit.
IMO that should be changed so that when you get 100% hit you really have found it
Yes, this is a bug we'll fix soon

That's one month of training (rank 5 skill) wasted.
Also, exploration with a unbonused ship and low skills is WAY TOO EASY. With a non-specialized character/equipment I can find 99% of the signatures I can find with a specialized char in a rigged covops. All these skill points wasted, unless the potential rewards and/or frequency of the remaining 1% are in the same ratio 99:1.

It was easy before and it is easy now. Just different. Deadspace protection is gone, but it in general takes more time to probe a ship. If the prober is not hunting a specific ship but used to just drop a spook in a mission hub, this is probably to require him a bit more time. Otherwise it's probably the same. In some situations (big ship, expert covop prober that is capable to narrow your location "by hand" using the directional scanner) it might be easier, so stay on your guard.

a) and b) still hold. A small ship overloaded with ECCM might possibly be unscannable (I still have to do the exact calculations), or take more time to scan. c) varies. Probably will be less effective than before, but there are some situations in which will still be useful.

i had all the BPs for the different probes, and even researched them. now, i will have several repeated BPs. is any kind of compensation being studied?
i know i could sell them, but there are some issues. first, since they are researched, i can not use the market, and selling through contracts is always harder and slower. and second, i guess many more players will find themselves on the same position than me, so everybody will be putting several BPs for sale on the next days, and the price will go down quickly.
has CCP thought about this issue?

2.4 gb patch to sisi atm so I haven't checked the newest build yet but simple question,
on the system map, especially on very large systems 100+ au across where its nice to put down 2-3 probes down and max scan everywhere, once you find hits its nice to centre your camera towards it instead of double clicking on nearby planets or the probes to get closer. Could we get more advanced camera control similar to the main universe map.

So far, I really like the new scanning system; makes things a bit more interesting when scanning, not just "push scan button every few minutes".
Two things though: 1. Black background on system map. :) In some systems it's really annoying to see and interact with the probes. 2. When you have scanned a site to 100% and visited it, you should be able to warp back to it at will unless you have left the system or docked. Right now it's annoying when you have to scan down the site again unless you've bookmarked it. "Then bookmark it!", I hear you say. As I said, it's annoying. It's also unnecessary.
Did I say two things? Hmm... 3. Found sites on new scans. This is also an annoyance, especially in crowded systems. When you've scanned down and visited a site, it still shows up on new scans. Don't these sites have unique scan signatures? Can't you tell your probes to filter out the signatures of identified sites? ;)
About the interface, it can take some getting used to. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to change the scan radius of probes in the scanner window or by right-clicking probes only. Personally I use both those, and I find the adjustable spheres more an annoyance than an assistance. It would also be nice if the placement arrows were round/thicker, since at some angles they are hard to hit. Again, more an annoyance than a requirement. There's also something strange with the system map. When click-dragging to rotate the map, it sometimes rotates with your probes as centre of gravity, sometimes the star and sometimes a planet. Personal preference for me would be always the probes as rotation point, but as long as it's constant that's good too. ;)

Yes I agree mostly with either the need to make the map background black or make the grayed out signature 'dots' (the ones not within scan range of a probe) a little brighter (very difficult to see as it is, even with a black background).
And I also think you should have the option to eliminate sites you've already scanned from subsequent results would make scanning out multiple signals much less *banging my head against my monitor* annoying.

The amateurs can spend some time, locate a wormhole or site, and access that content.
The professionals can map out a connected cluster of w-systems in the time it takes the rest of the gang to clear the first site or two.
The cluster I found yesterday had 4 w-systems, and 4 entrances from known space. THat means scanning down 7 wormholes and locating the most valuable sites among the 50 or 60 sites in the unknown space cluster.

i was getting so mad lastnight, i was on the test server and i had nailed down a spot inside a wormhole space. i had droped up to 8 probes on the location at .25AU which is the strongest the probes go. the best signal stranth i had was 5.75% . i had a red dot but i could not get the location. i moved the probes all about the area for an houre and no luck.
this new probeing system is suposed to work off triangulation to find the spot, but with all skills at lvl4 and 8 probes all triangulating the spot and thats the best i can get on a location?!
i tryed to ask on the test server , but all i was getting for responce is i need to move them around, thay cant stack. and respances to like i had no idea what i was doing. i had found before i ran into this one, 3 wormholes, 3 gravimetrics, 1 ladar, 2 unknows, and a radar. i was not trying to figure out how to probe at the time i was having this problem, i was trying to do it faster, and be more profishent at it...
now with the new systems how do we tell a GM we are having problems in 1 of 2500 systems named UNKNOWN.

ok one thing I noticed was that all too often useing more than 4 probes was useless(I mean seriously useless, your also far more likely to get the ghost 100% hits with excess probes) I think aparently the math they use gives each probe you use a chance at a bogus hit, with 8 your aparetnly looking at 80% chance of a crap return.

This dev blog is one of the better. Would have been even better if you guys could have given a detail explanation in a video tutorial. Guess we have to do that now :)
I'm with you guys that recoding the pos scanner array shouldnt have been done. Though I hope you guys do work to do such things in the future. The reasoning of "very few people using the array" is only because you guys made it so extremely difficult to use them to beginwith.
Hopefully in the future it will be possible to online 4 of these in the system. Properly link them. Then anyone with the pos password will have the rights to use the array. Scanning ships is now quite a lot harder than it used to be, for instance, it is impossible to find ships that warp between two safe spots, when in fact it used to be semi-viable(Yes, I've actually done it a few times).
The system was quite good while deviation was turned off, but as of now, it is pretty hard, if not impossible to catch anything as scanning down ships takes a lot of time.
And yeah, I got a nearly maxed out scanning character, Atro V and I use 8 probes, 4 Deep and 4 Combat to get better results/a better overview of the situation. The problem is, player skills nor skill points really help as the system is simply too random to make sense in the heat of combat. It gets really annoying in particular when some ships move around and some stay static because there is no way telling if your designated target moved, if the scan deviated, or if you're even looking for the right ship/pilot.
Heck. I'd rather as for a ship scan deviation nerf than a falcon nerf atm, who would have thought so?

try this, drop 1 prob, look at the signal stranth, then play "hot or cold" with the prob and move it to make the % go up till it will not go up anymore, then reduce the prob size, and then move the probe forward and back till the signal stranth cant go up any more, then right and left, then up and down, by this time your on it. i have been finding things in under 10 minits this way.

Hi
I liked the dev blog on scanning - however, I think it needed a few more tips on UI - or at least I am missing a couple of things. I have tried out scanning for a couple of hours in a CovOps with decent skills on TQ and haven't been able to figure out how I change the center point of my view. It seems that sometimes when I click on the screen the rotation center changes and sometimes it does not. I tried specifically clicking on a probe to see if that recentered things and it did not seem to work so what do I do to recenter the rotation point when setting probes in the system map.
Next, sometimes when I move a probe I get a planar projection with a shadow circle which seems to be an attempt to mark the 3rd dimension as I move the probe. However, it doesn't seem to always appear - sometimes I move the probe and this graphic does not appear.
Next, when scanning I often get red circles as well as red, yellow, and rarely green dots. The green dots may be warpable but not always. I have had scan results indicating 100% that could be warped to and others that could not. In addition, I have had 100% results I could warp to but nothing was there when I arrived.
When I move probes to surround one of the red or yellow dots - I can often get a no results on the next scan. It may mean that the target has moved ... since I was scanning down ships ... but there is no way for me to tell.
Do the probes pick up data for ships in warp?
Are there any other resources on the new probing system besides this dev blog? There are lots of details and tips that I find would be useful but there aren't many available in this thread and the dev blog doesn't seem to cover them.
For example - is there an optimum number of probes to use? I realize that you need results on 4 probes to triangulate something - however, what radius setting is required for a warpable and accurate result - do you need 4 hits on 0.5 AU radius probes? Or will 4 hits on 8AU radius probes work? What about hits on more than 4 probes or hits from probes running at different radii? Is a signal on 6 probes at 4 AU radius equivalent to one on 4 probes at 2AU?
As players we will learn how they work over time - but from a universe perspective some of this information should already be available - and the dev blog really didn't seem to cover some basic material - only a simple example of throwing out some probes and trying to lock down the signature.
Would it be possible to get a summary of some of the UI features as well as a quick rundown on probe functionality? How many hits at what radius are typically required to pick up a signature? Does changing radius affect the probe strength for example?
Thanks!

whats the maximum range of a site (wormhole) that can appear, when I do exploration, from an object in space - when I'm scanning ? I know the the max for a probe is 32 au so I guess that should be the max au from an ojbect ?

Having had a chance to actually try out the new system, I just wanted to say that the new system is fun, interesting, well-designed, and has one of the best user interfaces of any part of this game. Well done guys - excellent work.

You can always slide the probes around. And if you are in a big system you can start with the Deep Space probes that have a maximum range of 256 AU before you narrow the search down with Core or Combat probes.
Another nice thing I've noticed is that when only a single probe is set active, the selected contacts on the result list will light up on the map when the probe is moved within range. This makes far more easy to distribute a set of probes to single out an interesting contact.

One bit of feedback on probing I would like to give is that having wormholes in their own scan group would be very very nice. W-Space is extremely crouded with tons of sites, so finding wormholes out is quite hard, and very time consuming. Not because the scanning is hard, but because there are often a dozen sites, and after you scan one down, and move on to another, there is no way to remove them from the scan, so you may end up scanning down the same site multiple times.
On the flip side, people in K-space that are looking for complexes, now find wormholes all the time, which dives you crazy. And people looking for wormholes seem to find complexes all the time.... Isn't Murphy wonderful?
Anyway, yeah, having wormholes in their own scan group also makes sense from a logical role-play point of view, since they would have a totally different effect on the space time around them then a complex or professional site.

Yes, I should've mentioned this Covert Ops ships and the astrometrics frigates both get strength improvement bonuses of 5% and 10% respectively.
You mean 10% for Covops and 5% for astrometrics frigates, right?
I can't find confirmation for this info anywhere right now, whether it makes sense to use a covops at all to explore W-space (besides not getting ganked so easy with a covops cloak).

Do you have the game 'eve online' ?
If so simply typeing buzzard into market, then clicking the i will find the answer. Similarly clicking on the variation tab and looking at heron will give you the astrometric frigate %'age.
Iknow its a cryptic ay of disguising such a bonus, but ccp work in mysterious ways

Hiya,
I have a question with regard to the Implants that can be used to boost scanning...
Low-grade Virtue sets give a bonus to Scan Strentgh, with the usual Omega implant giving a set bonus, as is usual.
What I have to ask is did CCP give any thought to this?
The Omega Implant that gives the set bonus takes up slot 6. Additional Hardwiring implants can be fitted to aid in scanning as well, and Slot 6 can be fitted with Hardwiring - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector'PPF series which gives 1%, 3% & 10% bonus to reduction in scan deviation. However another set of Hardwirings is also available for Slot 8 - Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector' PPH series which gives 1%, 3% & 10% bonus to scan strength.
The Omega stops you from using slot 6 for anything else, so surely it would have made more sense for the Hardwirings for Slot 6 and Slot 8 to be swapped around - if you use a full set of Virtue implants then you don't get additional bonuses on scan strength because you have lost Slot 6 to the Omega implant, but you can still fit a Hardwiring that benefits Deviation...
This would then allow you to boost Signal Strength AND also allow you to boost Deviation too, and it would be a choice to fit the Omega or a Poteque Pharmaceuticals 'Prospector'PPF series if you can't afford an Omega but not block the ability to decrease the Deviation from a scan.
