So I'm watching the Trinity trailer on youtube and having my soul bombarded by this beautiful arrangement of music. It's a glorious celebration of the scale and variety the world of Eve has to offer yet the jukebox in game is full of this emo nonsense.
Listen to some of these tracks on youtube:
Seranata Lucius Dei
Why can't we have more of this sort of thing?
The jukebox variety in Eve is something that the developers got so hopelessly wrong that it's a joke. You can't even play your own files.
FIX IT, GOING ON 6 YEARS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not everyone can like it, but it is good quality music. And since it doesn't stand out or draw a lot of attention it makes great background music.
EVE is the only MMO that I haven't turned the music off after a short time, in fact have always left it on since I started playing four years ago. I don't care for some of the tracks, but none of them are obnoxious or even slightly annoying enough for me to care.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

one of the reasons i got into eve over the other mmos was cause the sound, graphics, and design was so all perfectly tied to the feeling of desolate emptiness (this back when we had serif fonts)
and it's not my scene, per say, but c'mon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambient_music
specifically modern electronic ambient since the guy uses almost exclusively real synths (vs VSTs or acoustic instruments).
if you're bored, cross link to demo scene on wiki, which i used to be really into, which goes hand in hand. --

Maybe you'd like some of the music Yu Chen (kaiyoti) made for the game Infinity Universe. Look on his site, he's got a player on the left. Look for the songs that start with "Infinity."
EVE has a different mood. I like the music of EVE, it doesn't get in the way. Or as said, you can turn it off and play your own music using a regular music player. ----

I don't really care for the music either, but it's pretty ridiculous to expect any game to feature music you could really get into, especially if you go off linking obscure music that most people don't like. How about you do what everyone else does and load those songs you linked into an mp3 player and let the sounds take you wherever you like. Problem solved. _ |

To say that the trailers are nothing like the game was the topic of an entire thread recently, and is undeniable.
I mean, I can just see this change in effect. We get new, more 'epic' music for EVE, similar to what is in the trailers. A player gets into a fleet to head off for some PvP. The upbeat music is 'bombarding your soul' as you... warp to a gate, jump, align, warp, jump, align, warp, jump
Holy ****, this is ****ing epic!
align, warp, jump, align, warp jump, align, warp, lag, back in station
Hey, time to head to a trade hub to fit a new ship! On arrival we see... this? No. This. But with epic music. Like what it might be like if the ships in Star Wars spend their time bumping into each other, spinning around and lagging out.
Actually, this video explains it better than I can.
BTW, I love the music you linked. -

Stupid question really :[ I'm saying the music in Eve is depressing. Do you get an emotional high listening to any of that stuff, 90% of it all sounds the same.
Ok, so the attitude is different but the music is still depressing? Eve is fairly dystopian and that's the setting people choose to participate in. There's a great deal of emo in the foundation of things.
Would it ruin the game to have something upbeat in the jukebox?

I don't think it would ruin the game at all, though something like Prozzak would be horribly misplaced. There is a lot of music that fits the EVE universe... more than a Jukebox could possibly cover. I've dusted off some old albums just to go with EVE myself. I find it a lot better than trying to turn everyone's radio dial. _ |

No, you're pretty clear. You're saying Eve is repetitive and that having seriously awe inspiring music would soon begin to wear thin etc...
That's fine, it makes sense. But you're now saying that because of Eve's repetitive nature that it deserves to have dreary and monotonous music. That is like pure concentrated emo, the kind which makes your wrists burst open of their own volition.
There's nothing wrong with having a few tracks which actually inspire people rather than constantly remind them that Eve is a dystopian poo hole.

Well, the idea was to highlight the contrast between the track in the trailer and what's currently on offer in the jukebox. You pointed that out clearly. The question is why were they trying to portray Eve in that particular way.
Undocking for the first time only to be greeted by this slow dull monotony, which some people may like, isn't going to suit everyone who is lured in by the theme of the trailer. There are better ways to inspire a sense of wonder than with lifeless tones. Yes, of course it's subjective but it can't be denied that it seems like false advertising. They could at least 'try' to cater more to the brand of music they thought was so fitting.

Yeah, I have to say, I really enjoyed the eve music for quite a while, until I found eve-radio. However, like many have said, the eve jukebox captures the mood of being out in space perfectly. And the music isn't depressing, it's relaxing, learn the difference. If you really get depressed from this kind of music, I wouldn't suggest trying any form of meditation. Actually, you probably live your life like that movie crank, but, I degress.
I agree it couldn't hurt to put some more options in, but when that is just as easily done by opening winamp or whatever media player you happen to like, I would much rather CCP fix bugs and balance than add some songs that a fraction of the community will ever listen to.
Btw, I find Under the Asteroids (or something to that effect) in the jukebox to be quite upbeat, just not epicamzingmovieherololz upbeat.

Judging by the thread, looks like CCP made the right call.
That making the game look like it does in the trailer in an impossibility might have had something to do with it too. -

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean a) it's not good, b) people don't like it. It's your preference, that's cool, but some people might disagree.
Hmmm, not what I asked.

No, the answer wasn't what you wanted. That happens sometimes, you can either get used to it or just stop posting new threads.

You think everyone who doesn't like what you like is an emo fan? Here's a hint: My music is crap; barely worth being called music. So is yours. The difference is attitude.

Because Eve isn't an upbeat game. It's supposed to be angry, dark, annoying and frustrating. If you want upbeat go play Hello Kitty Online. :D

No, depressed and/or whiney is emo. Angry, dark and frustrating is just what it says. You really should know the definition of something before you start using it as your goto expression, otherwise you just end up looking like a tool.
Oh, and in case you decide to actually start listening to the people in this thread who are trying to explain to you why CCP chose to use Ambient, it's because it's there to fill in the soundscape without getting in the way of the games other sounds. That's the whole point of a game soundtrack and Ambient serves that purpose well while at the same time sounding futuristic. I'm sure you'll quote how Star Wars used instrumental blah blah blah but the fact of the matter is that it was made in the 70's and electronically created music was primitive at best. I'm willing to bet that if the original movies had of been made today, the soundtrack would have ended up much different. (Keep in mind I actually really LIKE the Star Wars soundtrack).
Also EVE does have a few rock/metal type tracks that play when you go into complexes that are quite a bit more upbeat.

<3 the music in Eve <3 RealX (but not stalker fashion mind, its ok RealX you can drop the restraining order now) <3 the MP3 of RealX live at one of the Fanfests
The music has a mood which suits Eve, there are a fewer of the newer pieces which add an "Industrial" flavour to the "Ambient" mix but I still prefer to think of it as its own genre of "Eve music".
If I don't want to listen to "Eve music" I'll find something in my collection I am in the mood to listen to at the time (and that's pretty varied) or go harrass one of the DJs on Eve ... I mean Eden ... Underground Radio

I'm scared if I listen to the music too much I'll wake up 12 hour later covered in a strangers blood.
I disagree that the music is in anyway "emo". Its purely electronica it sort of need lyrics to be emo. Discussions on music are pretty redundant and lame though, so I'm not going to get sucked into the Original posters obvious attempt to cause a flame war.

I have read the first page of the thread. I came to the following conclusions:
a, some players are horribly illiterate (or perhaps inaudiate) in regards to music. b, somehow, ambient music does not fit empty space c, you people have no mp3s, apparently.
Guess what: the music is completely optional. And besides, sometimes you want something that blends into the background and does not take your mind of the game. The current EVE ambience suits this perfectly. An upbeat, heroic theme would fit maybe for fleet fights, but apart from that, EVE should be one thing in regards of ambience: cold.
As for myself: trun music down, crank Winamp up, load Darkthrone/Darkspace/Neptune Towers albums, and blast away.
(thats black metal/black metal&black ambient/dark ambient respectively)

In that case why should CCP add more music, of any kind, to the jukebox, when in this day and age, the player can just as easily find some they like, and play it with a media player? As I said before, CCP has better things to do (regarding Eve) than make music that most people won't even listen to (as most players, granted I am assuming, already listen to their own music if they don't like what Eve has to offer).

People used teamspeak and then Eve voice was added, so they see the need to cater to what players want.

Simple way to add upbeat music to EVE. Turn off the music in game and play something on your computer. I do it all the time.
Although I do personally like the ambient music. Gives the game a good feel. There are some days where I listen to something else.

hmm, mixed feelings about the music, some of it I love some of it is..meh.. and the rest seems to generate a feeling of apathy within me.
I stare at the screen sometimes thinking, omg Im so bored, this game is so boring... switch on some decent out of game music, suddenly I have the energy again.
Its kinda like the ships... a lot of the designs are shocking, no architect on the world would design such monstrosity's. They had a golden opportunity to radically change the designs with trinity but I guess we are forever stuck with them just like the music.

Yes, but Eve voice was added to facilitate gameplay in fleets without the user having to find a server on vent or ts (which sometimes required the exchange of money). Adding new music, or adding the ability to play your own music through the jukebox isn't something that would facilitate gameplay in any meaningful fashion. Would it be a cool feature? Yes, but not a useful one (In terms of gameplay) like Eve voice.

I like the music. I even listen to Eve music in my car sometimes. Akat Mountains and Do You Know Where You Are? are great to drive to... and It's Full of Stars.
Granted, the in-game versions lack the drum tracks, but when in-game, I prefer the music to be unobtrusive.
It's not unreasonable to say that the in-game music doesn't suit your taste, but I agree that it is unreasonable to expect CCP to cater to every player's musical tastes. It's not worth the effort because it would be impossible to please everyone.

They had considered it, but then they found out that they would have to pay liscencing fees, which would in turn mean the players price would go up to compensate so they decided against it because the players still had the option to listen to their own music with a third party program.
But please, continue to be ignorant I'm sure many of us find it very amusing.

Then choose a different format. Ogg Vorbis:
We make commercial, closed source software. Can I use Ogg Vorbis at all? What licensing do I need to pay?
Again, there are no licensing fees for any use of the Ogg Vorbis specification. As a commercial developer, you are free to create and sell (or give away) open or closed source implementations of Vorbis encoders, decoders, or other tools. However, if you use our software rather than writing an independent implementation, you must respect the terms of the license. Our libraries are available under our BSD-like license and can be used whole or in part by closed source applications.
Are there licensing fees for distributing, selling, or streaming media in the Ogg Vorbis format?
No.
If there aren't any licensing fees, how are you going to make money off the format? Will you charge fees later, after Vorbis becomes popular?
The benefits of a patent-free, license-free format outweigh the concerns of making money directly from the format. The Vorbis format will always be free and in the public domain. Xiph.org is investigating a variety of models for funding development, some of which may include licensing non-free Vorbis-related programs and libraries to commercial projects. Nevertheless, the reference encoder and decoder will always be open source and third parties will always be free to modify or reimplement them.

Seriously though, and while I can kinda understand your point of view, Civilisation IV being an example of a game that does have the capability you are eluding to, I would prefer CCP to spending their time and resources on actual gameplay than an optional item that 99% ppl I know turn off. Just because it's not in the style that you'd prefer doesn't make EVE's music, as you say, poor. I find much more emotion in the music of, say, Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey (Note: not much pump-up at all and mostly mood and atmosphere) than the latest pew-pew sci-fi epic awesome shoot stuff holycrapitblewup ****-fest. Orchestral music in the vein of Hans Zimmer and the like are meant to do one thing, make you take ****s from epic.
EVE isn't modeled after those super-rad lazer-powered space awesome. If the mood and atmosphere of EVE makes you feel emo and want to slash wrists then by all means do so. I, for one, find the music tranquil and totally fitting. Putting the canned epic crap in the game would just destroy the feel of EVE, in my opinion.

Now I neither flamed you or called you names, something which you seem to have a fondenss for, and I think I was the only repeat only person to post that said anyting in support of your argument, that being that internal user control jukeboxes are possible, and you give me that attitude.
Fair enough then, I revoke my previous post and replace it simply with 'stfu'
Which alt were you posting under this time?

Music is way too subjective to argue about. Me, I like the in game music in EvE. Every once in a while you get a suitable beat going after you jump into a mission, but I like the fact that the vsat majority of the music is subtle. Mining to some upbeat stuff would just not fit at all, IMO.

Emo rage quit ftw. ;p
Edit: Me off topic? Nope checked everything out, all on topic and points addressed in original post.
Hmm two constructive replies in a row, glad to see you can argue your point so successfully. Wish I had such powers of persuasion as you. I guess I have no choice but to do/think/behave just like you, my new God. /bows
If you cant handle the fact that I pointed out that you and minsc were talking about too very different things without resorting to juvenile behaviour, so be it. I was prepared to actually support you in favour of a revamped juekbox, but your attitude quickly killed that.
btw, I have only two alts on this acount, but i can create another if it gives you something else to take to your therapist..whats that? not seeing one? you should...
Flame away, I am no longer listening and no longer care.....

The ambient music suits the deep space feel of the game, but it definitely is not fun to listen to or entertaining. Personally I would love several radio stations on eve, perhaps npc specific based on where you are and also variety of genres.
I tend to turn it off for itunes or vent.

The music for mission complexes can be good. EVE Radio isn't bad at times. Or good ol Winamp ftw.

Why can't we have more of this sort of thing?
The jukebox variety in Eve is something that the developers got so hopelessly wrong that it's a joke. You can't even play your own files.

emo ? nothing in the eve music is emo, i don't think you know what emo is. its what homosexuals listen to when they lack the balls to come out.

Despite of i love the trailer tracks, the EVE jukebox music is amazing. I think that you point of view about music is poor.

I'd rather have something like this instead of that generic hollywood soundtrack cheese that only fits the trailers and cinematics.

I've come to the conclusion that Zantei is confusing the mood of the music, "Dark", with a genre, "Emo".
Music in EVE will always be dark, no amount of complaining will change that.

actually the tracks you chose are emo, i.e. melodramatic, and more suited to introduce some product. i cant think of ANY situation in this game that would match the music you chose....well maybe an EPIC situation, like a 10/10 plex, or officer fight.
eve music is super chill, like the game. it matches lazy missioning, mining, exploring. when im pvping i turn all music off to hear the FC
