Edited by: Hawkyy on 15/04/2009 01:33:58 Traveling 20 jumps to a mate, didn't know the default was set to quickest and go through low sec, causing me to tab out with autopilot on, only to tab back in and find ive been podded and lost my Hawk i just bought for 20mill that took me ages to save for. So yeah:
Don't tab out while traveling through low sec.

Never sit in high-sec and expect a "fair" fight when doing the can-flipping trick; the other person can and will bring out something bigger to kill you with.
Never mission in low-sec.
Keep your clone up to date.
Assume that everyone who approaches you in low/null-sec (and isn't blue/corpmate) is about to kill you.
If someone else enters your wormhole, assume that they will try to kill you. (lost a Drake that way).
Keep your clone up to date.
Never accidentally fit an AOE (area-of-effect) weapon to attack a WT on a station.
Learn the instawarp: spam warp-to when you're in deep structure.
Oh, and: keep your clone up to date. Obviously what I say isn't always what my alliance thinks. I hate to break it to you, but this is in fact my signature.

1 Get a secure, reliable, and repeatable source of income in game before you try PVP. PVPing on a shoestring budget is hard. PVPing when you have the isk is fun.
2 Every ship/system/race will eventually get nerfed. Plan ahead.
3 READ THE PATCH NOTES.. You'd be surpised what won't suprise you on patch day if you do.
4 This game is boreing without friends. Make some. Find some. Buy some. But get some some how.

1) Have at least 2 accounts and run them at the same time. 2) Going to low-sec and constantly doing large fleet ops gets really boring because you only see little blue and red dots because your zoomed out. 3) 1 quality post on the general board for every 999 completely useless posts.

-Don't let CCP take away your 10.0 security status after the first major EVE update post launch.
-Buy and stockpile more Gisti stuff before 0.0 complex are nerfed.
-Unanchor and store your POS before it runs out of fuel, and someone else cleans up your mess for you.
-Don't go AFK for 20 mins in your 6billion isk faction battleship while missioning, even if just one ghetto mission turret is shooting you for almost no damage.
-Don't trick yourself, into believing that you can commit to other people's dreams and have constant time in your life to commit to doing the really cool things in eve when you totaly don't.
-Don't waste all of your isk trying to be Entity, you suck at life and can never be him.
-Don't jump your dread out of high sec before high sec building ability is removed. *shakes fist at Chribba*
-Don't leave tons of battleships in capturable player stations. --------------

The best Tech 1 mods are often as good as their tech 2 counterpart. The exceptions are tech 2 modules that get bonuses for advanced training skills (Heavy missiles for example)

Learn your damage types and your range, both offense and defense
Anything you need is sold either on the market or via contracts.
If using contracts, make sure the one you accept looks like a dozen others (but maybe for a slight price differential). Nothing shouted in local or structured in an odd way in contracts is worth paying attention to.
Do not, under any circumstances, start a corp with a couple buddies and expect to grow.

- If you're planning on "checking out" low sec for the first time take a cheap ship.
- Learning skills are a great investment. I know it's been said but it cannot be enough.
- You can target multiple ships and fire at them all with different turrets. Seriously I was trying to take on small swarms of NPCs and only shooting one with all my guns then moving onto the next before I realised this. Sure they went down quick but I was having to wait for a target lock on each target after the first and when you have a basic ship with not great tanking abilities 3-4 NPCs can take you down pretty fast.
- Train skills so you can lock a good amount of targets at one time. This applies to mining in particular so you can keep rats at bay and continue mining at the same time without sacrificing extra high slots for more firepower.
- Drones. Learn to love them.

May sound stupid to most, but ctrl+clicking on things in the overview or in space locks them. I was playing a month before someone told me that ;)
I imagine the new player experience is a little more detailed nowadays tho.

1) Should not have trained Caldari.
2) Spreading my skills out all over the place instead of finding a goal and aiming for it.
3) Never took the time to learn trading stuff. So many hours spent just training because I didnt have time to focus on a mission that I could have spent on a trading run.
4) Not training towards Capital ships.. "They will only be for a select few anyhow". Right.
5) Spending my first two years in High Sec being a silly mission runner

1. Don't go Caldari. 2. Don't train Missiles. 3. Don't train for a Falcon. 4. Don't think just because I'm a small ship in a fleet that I won't be primaried. 5. Corp members just might be a spy and betray you. 6. Just because you have a warp stab doesn't mean you can't be stopped. 7. Don't take a PVE tank into PvP.
Oh, the days I was a noob. Lol. Now I have no excuse for making stupid mistakes, now they are just dumb moves.

Edited by: Babel on 16/04/2009 11:42:56 Edited by: Babel on 16/04/2009 11:41:27 1. That low-sec/null-sec is not as dangerous [if you have half a brain] as majority of hi-sec players tell you it is. Notwithstanding hub-alts of 0.0 mains who like to brag in local. Took me a year [!] to realise I was listening to ignorant rabbits ....
2. That being -5.00 or lower from a Empire faction does not mean that A. hi-sec gates to hostile hisec are locked or B. you insta-explode entering that space.
3. That lots of people give advice in Eve on stuff they really just have no experience of at all and just let legends continue .... mainly to justify their own behaviour [see 1. and 2.] :)
4. That the only foolproof way of finding out how something really works [or not] is to do it yourself [see 3.]
5. That you can link Regions, Constellations and Systems into chat windows by dragging from the title at the top of each F11 mapbrowser box - Total Win ! .

....that it is futile to specialise in anything that might be fun or really profitable in Eve...cause as soon as you are skilled for it and learned the tricks....CCP will nerf it
...that CCP's scamming approval policy destroys nearly all proper social interaction within the game - everyone expects you to be a scammer as well...

Dont use auto pilot, especially when flying through low sec. YOu will get your ship popped doing this. Use Warp to zero instead. Its faster and its safer.
Learn to press f10 when flying through low sec and use a scout
Also train for 2 jump clones right away
