I should hope not!

This is the longest single sentence I've seen in a while! Nowhere in the OP was there any mention attacking carebears for what they do. Nowhere did I say they were doing it wrong. The OP expresses the point that the most emotionally unstable group of players in Eve are not the griefers, but the carebears who consider themselves stable pillars of the Eve community.

har har .. this gave me a great idea.
CCP should get the rats to appear in local as players and have them screaming at the players as they kill em.
Now, imagine losing local and having all of these npcs in local screaming at the one person ratting.
Imagine being the scout .. "There's 220 people in here! Oh nos!"
Oh the evil genius of it all ..
You think carebears give you a hard time?
Try tanking a war dec gang and docking up as you are out classed and out numbered.
The obscenities .. its far worse than any 50year old guy mining asteroids and getting a can flipped can spew.
In fact, the only thing thats true here from the OPs post is :
"Take someone's reward away and they get upset".
Apply that to any "HOW EVE WAS DESIGNED TO BE PLAYED" career (What a lot of tosh that call is) and you get people upset, on TS, Vent, Private Intel Channels or local.

Because mocking your perpetual whining provides meager entertainment on a slow afternoon. But it's not quite certain exactly what you want addressed that hasn't been addressed? Are you ****ed off because complaining about personal attacks and phone calls is trivially agreeable? Or are you ****ed off because not everyone is jumping onto your bandwagon that it's all due to how we play the game?

Carebears who would verbally insult you for pvp are the kind that have trouble separating virtual and real world in their mind. They would quote real life laws to you and tell you that you'd be in prison now if only they knew your address, totally forgetting that what they are raging about is just a few pixels, stuff that doesn't even exist.
It is not that they are sociopaths. It is that they take what happens to them in virtual world with same seriousness as if it was real. Which does demonstrate some sort of mental error in way they perceive things. Not sure what to call it though :)

I'm not ****ed, silly. I'm highly entertained during a slow afternoon here at work. If you think for a moment that the OP is nothing more than thinly veiled attempt at trolling that managed to get to page 5 and keep me entertained, well...

blah blah blah, thanks for the posts.
If you thought this was good, you should see my diatribes on C&P trying to convince lo-sec pirates that they are not pirates, but in fact second-rate extortionists not worthy of the title "pirate".

Indeed. I wonder how many self-professed mature and level-headed pirates (such as the OP himself) would still play the game if it were not for the pleasure in upsetting players in real life. If one were to believe all the epeen-waving that is done, specifically in C&P, I'd be willing to wager that there are lots of players more than willing and eager to grief simply because it's fun and entertaining to see others engorged in misery. I'm of the mindset that those that enjoy provoking anger and rage are just as ill as those that are easily provoked.
People say that who you are on the internet is not who you are in real life, but I tend to disagree somewhat. I think the motivation for people's actions in a virtual setting speak volumes about who they are in real life, especially in a sandbox like EvE with little to no consequences.
Show me someone who gets their kicks can-baiting newbies just because they like to cause misery for another player, and I'll show you someone I don't want as a friend in real life. Unfortunately, the anonymous nature of the internet makes it difficult to correlate the two groups with any certainty.

EDIT: So I guess, to the OPs point: No, I wouldn't want to know someone in RL who threatened to kill my family because I blew up his virtual space ship. =P
Virtual world is not same as real world. You motivations for doing something in virtual world cannot be perfectly translated onto real world like you are suggesting.
In EVE, I made half my fortune through scamming. In real life I have had many chances to scam and get away with it earning real life money in process. I didn't take them because it wasn't right.

I didn't say they transferred perfectly. =)
And remember I said "motivation", not "action". Why a person does something in the virtual world is relevant, in my opinion. The what is generally inconsequential.
Scamming is a what. It's practically an accepted game mechanic for accruing wealth nowadays. I wouldn't expect someone to take virtual property rights as seriously as real property rights, just as I wouldn't expect an in-game pirate to be a murderous thug in real life. The actions in one do not reflect the other. The real question is, why do you scam?
Do you do it for the ISK (ingame action for an ingame reward), or do you do it because you get a kick out of causing misery to another person behind his/her keyboard (ingame action for a RL result)?
Can flipping is another example of a what. It's the motivation behind it that important. If you can-flip a Hulk, you might be trying to get their valuable modules should they fall for your trap. However, griefing a 2-day old in a Bantam because you think it's fun to hurt someone else in a consequence-free environment is a different matter entirely.
It's the difference between playing the game to get ahead in the game, and playing the game to cause pain to people.
Much like the OP's examples of people making real-life threats and harassing phone calls, I would consider people in this category as people I wouldn't want to hang around in real life.

Good Idea - Assuming humans do stupid things, like threatening or even killing each other because of actions in a game. Bad Idea - Assuming how they choose to play a game makes people more or less likely to do that.
Good Idea - Pirates are less likely to get mad because they lose more ships in general Bad Idea - Assuming that the pirate wouldn't get just as mad if he lost a ship he wasn't prepared to lose
Good Idea - Posting constructive critism Bad Idea - Trolling by randomly insulting OP just cos people have whined about this before

Thread delivers
I really worry about some people who play videogames. There was this one guy I used to kill in another game and ev ery single time I did it he'd get so mad I was afraid he'd burst a blood vessel in his brain and fall over dead at his keyboard.
I felt like getting him one of those mini zen gardens.

There's two types of stupid gamers: Dweebs and Dorks.
Dorks we all know. These guys take their game out into real life. They wear "EverQuest" tee shirts, dress up and do LARP, that kind of thing. You can usually find this poor creature sitting in the food court at the mall talking about his level 80 warlock and how great the last raid was.
Dweebs, though ... they're very similar, but fundamentally different. A dweeb can't separate his real life from his game. He usually breaks down into threats, insults, even likes to brag about how big he is and how he'd kick your ass in real life. Dweebs are also known to try to bring 'courage' and 'cowardice' into every game action, which really is just showing their hand that THEY require courage to do simple things in this video game.
This is an imaginary world. It's fantasy. Its pretend. It doesn't require any courage or steely resolve to do anything, any more than your three year old fighting dragons in your back yard. In fact, if you need to grab your courage to undock ... you might need to rethink your life. Do something for real, join the military, climb a mountain. There's real courage, and imaginary life doesn't come close.
IF you can't separate the actions of other players from real life, you are disturbed in the head. If you think that every time some player comes by and blows up your ship, you have SERIOUS EMOTIONAL ISSUES. If you see every can-swap attempt as a personal affront, you need to visit a doctor.
Because it's a GAME. Do you hate those NPC's your killing? Probably don't even give them a second thought. Player-versus-player interaction is no different. You killing someone else doesn't make you a better person, or smarter, or stronger. Cause the game is simple enough that twelve year olds can excel in it.
Time to grow up, and separate the imaginary space ships from your real world. Quit taking it so personally, play your game, and have fun.
By the way, on the whole 'sandbox' issue. You know what a true sandbox is? A small enclosed space with just a few toys. You CAN go off in your corner and play with your own toys, but there is nothing stopping other people from coming over and interrupting you. THAT is a sandbox. It's not a license to play undisturbed how you want ... it's a license to play how you want, despite others.
That includes the ability to take the toys away from everyone else. THAT is a sandbox.
Freedom. It's often a nice principle, but most like the idea ONLY if they get to make the rules for everyone else.

The difference between EvE, and Real Life, is one is imaginary and doesn't actually matter.
What in gods name causes someone to care about some anonymous digital representation talking about how great he is? WHY is that annoying?
It makes no sense. That character/forum personality DOESNT REALLY EXIST. It's like holding a grudge against a character in a fantasy novel. Sure, the character is dislikable, but he's not even real. Why hold a grudge?

You're already assuming that what the OP stated is universally true of all those that don't choose to partake in combat PvP. I suppose you also agree with him and every single pirate and thief in Eve is a well-rounded and decent individual in real life.
Oh please people are just people. You get ****ers in all walks of life and you can't make assumptions about whole groups of people based on the actions of a few individuals. I've worked with the public so I know quite well how easily a ***** can ruin your day and cause you to forget all those friendly and polite people you've dealt with beforehand. I'm just not stupid enough to think that all the general public are *****s and know that its just a minority. I'm also intellegent enough to know that sometimes the person that has just been an arse to you might have been having a bad day and that it isn't indicitive of their normal behaviour.

You're writing my assumptions for me? No, your correct in the fact that there are idiots and fools in all walks of life. And I agree, people have a bad day.
There are *****s who pirate, and *****s who mission run, but so far I've let a lot more calm and levelheaded individuals who partake in PvP than those who don't. I personally can't stand pirating myself, but view pirates as players just as much as me. The issue is that the players who pirate and pvp are often very cool about it. The players who I've seen get ganked/stolen from, however, are most often NOT.
Generalities? Possibly. But it's also personal experience.
But that being said, I disagree. *****s, *******s, fools and idiots ARE the majority.
