But take a good long look at yourself, and ask yourself what you would do without fear of consequence.
What keeps us all in check?
Speaking for only myself it is not much when it comes to Eve. I avoid making Concord mad. I like my CEO so I try not to make him mad. Besides it's kind of hard to make him mad anyway. I like most of the people I use to fly with in Eve so I wont mess with them (there are not that many). Everyone else in the game I don't care if they get mad at me or not. To me it is just a game. There are so many ways to avoid being "griefed" in this game that I do not have any sympathy for people who complain about being "griefed".
In The World Outside of Eve what keeps me in check is The Law. And I don't go around griefing people at work because I need the money to play Eve. That's about it. Oh, and the wife. Don't want to make her mad.

Originally by: Ratchman I'm not knocking pirates in general. That was meant as a wry comment about the OP.
Way to admit **** poasting on my thread.
Originally by: Ratchman You're right in that there are no 'safe' places in EVE, but that is not the point I am making. The point being made is that the OP seems surprised that some people take it personally. Some people will have an extreme reaction to the simplest thing. I've seen someone seriously beat someone because he didn't put salt and vinegar on his chips.
No, I'm not surprised. My personal experiences were just illustrations. They aren't the focus of the thread.
Originally by: Ratchman I'm not justifying such behaviour, but you have to remember that people are diverse and react in many different ways. Some people will laugh off adversity, and other people will deal with it by stalking their oppressor. The point is: these are real people. You should expect some cursing at the very least. Some vindictive retaliation is to be expected too. Death threats are extreme, but are very, very rare.
Congratulations on stating the obvious.
Originally by: Ratchman The trouble with the OP is that the anonymity of sitting on his computer has dissassociated him from the human reaction you would expect.
No disassociation here. I think you've pegged the diagnosis on the wrong party. It's those who fly off the handle with personal threats that suffer from said disassociation.
Originally by: Ratchman I'll bet he would never have done that if the person had been sat right next to him at the time, because then, the human emotion would have been quite evident, and there would be no barrier between them, and the fear of a violent reaction becomes a reality.
This is ridiculous. You can bet your ass that I'd blow up your Internet spaceship if you were sitting next to me. Why should that matter?
Originally by: Ratchman Yes, this is a game, and I treat it as such, but I do remember that I play with other people. Sometimes I do things to deliberately anatagonise others, but I am under no illusion as to the impact my decisions might have on other people, and I usually have to be offended against in the first place to even contemplate that. I'm no carebear, but I am aware that there is another human being at the other end.
If I ever get to the point that I feel I can't do an allowed action in a video game for fear of personal retaliation, something is very wrong indeed. If someone is so personally vested in a game that they respond with vitriol and threats, maybe they should reconsider playing.
Originally by: Ratchman As someone wisely said earlier, if someone is a good person in real-life, but a bad one online, what would they do if they did not fear the consequence? Many of us are only good because of the law of the land. We might even convince ourselves that we're good people. But take a good long look at yourself, and ask yourself what you would do without fear of consequence.
Relevance? If ethics are personal or enforced, I don't much care. So long as there aren't any threats, it's just different means to an end.

I've come to realize that high-sec can flippers are just sad little kids that can't take low- or nul-sec game play. They have to take actions that call for zero skill (stealing ore from a can) in hopes of having a little fun. These are the same kind of folks who gatecamp or basecamp with four or five battleships to kill one cruiser in .4. Sad, really. :)
If you put your ore in an unsecured can, expect it to get stolen by these kids. I've personally never seen anyone get excited over it; I think it's just these can flipper kids using it as an excuse to post verbal vomit on a posting board.

Sol, man, go get laid. For the love of God, or the hatred of carebears, either way do yourself a favor and go hunt p**** instead of pixels.
You call yourself a badass pvper, well good for you, because obviously you need to escape to Eve to do it. Just like carebears need to escape somewhere in order to have a stable risk free life without a fear of rejection or humiliation because they risk that in their daily lives where they are the real pvpers. Go cash in your 401k, sell all your gold to a tv commercial, dig a hole in the ground and become a vegan cause your done.

Originally by: Sol'Kanar We've all seen it. The quiet and seemingly level-headed carebear having a wonderful time in his isolated perception of Eve. Courteous and polite, this friendly and often jovial inhabitant toils away at mining rocks or doing his part to rid the universe of infinitely re-spawning NPCs.
It doesn't take much, however, to bring this brittle facade crumbling down. This once stable pillar of Eve society quickly collapses into a hateful sociopath spewing vitriol and real life threats.
What heinous act could elicit such a change in demeanor? What outrageous event causes such polar behaviour? Steal their ore. Steal their salvage. Steal their loot. Shoot their ship. In other words, play the game the way it was intended, and a once rational player becomes a hateful sociopath hell-bent on hurting you in game and out.
I've seen carebears petition another player for an offensive name not because they were offended by it, but because they were angry and wanted to "ruin" another player any way they can. I've watched them unload with a laundry list of personal attacks about me, my mother, and my own children. I've been personally threatened with bodily harm more times than I can count because I won a fight or stole something in game.
I submit to you that the pirates and thieves of Eve are more level-headed and well-adjusted than those they antagonize. I've tangled with other pirates and thieves, and win or lose, have never been subject to the abuses I so regularly receive from carebears. In Eve, just as in real life, it's the quiet ones you have to worry about.
I come at your wife / girlfriend with a knife in my hand and a cool, calm and emotionless expression on my face. She doesn't know me, I don't really know her. She screams, yells, throws things at me.
I stab here countless times, she bleeds and dies. You enter the scene and see this and you do everything in your power to harm me anyway humanly possible. I avoid your glutches.
I submit to you, cold hearted killers are more level headed than the victims.
Real life comparsion, but I happen to believe people playing the game are real people, not pixels. So if another player causes me harm, it was a person to person, not pixels to pixels.

Grief play tends to make people angry unless they are the predator instead of the prey.
The thing is though that it's tears that fuel the grief play, and these tears tend to enable the bully mindset in some folks. Perhaps the best thing you can do is just ignore griefers. It bores them and sometimes they just go away. The worst thing you can do is throw a tantrum on local.

That's because pirates and thieves in EvE understand that this is just a game. Eventually the game will come to an end and there's no point in planning for a long term future. Losing everything in a hilarious stunt isn't a big deal to them.

I must have struck a nerve with my comments to get that analysis. Much of what you say is actually right. It is a game and people shouldn't have to fear their actions in it.
Don't give yourself the wrong impression of me! You struck no nerves, I just like to debate. Most people on Eve-O don't measure their words and just shoot from the hip.
Originally by: Ratchman What you fail to appreciate is that fact that people do not see the world in the same way. The fact that you gave out your phone number (or made it publically available) to someone who is now threatening you in real life shows you have little appreciation for this fact.
There is all sorts of information you can dig up on someone with very little effort. A phone number is a required piece of information when registering an Internet domain.
Originally by: Ratchman As for being a neo-con, I feel rather insulted by that.

Schizophrenia (pronounced /ˌskɪtsəˈfrɛniə/ or pronounced /ˌskɪtsəˈfriːniə/), from the Greek roots skhizein (σχίζειν, "to split") and phrēn, phren- (φρήν, φρεν-, "mind") is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a mental disorder characterized by abnormalities in the perception or expression of reality. It most commonly manifests as auditory hallucinations, paranoid or bizarre delusions, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social or occupational dysfunction. Onset of symptoms typically occurs in young adulthood,[1] with approximately 0.4û0.6%[2][3] of the population affected. Diagnosis is based on the patient's self-reported experiences and observed behavior. No laboratory test for schizophrenia currently exists.[4] |
