So despite every expert telling them it's a bad idea, despite all the protests and petitions (the big one reached 130,000 signatures), despite it being completely ineffective... the German parliament passed the internet censorship bill today. Not 2 hours after the bill became law one spokesman for the CDU is already considering widening the blacklist to sites that promote "Killerspiele" like Counterstrike.
As a public service to my fellow Germans I present the "how to get around Zensursula's Wall" guide.
1) Go here and pick an open DNS server 2) Follow the steps here to change your DNS settings
And it's just that easy. Here's hoping the Federal Court will strike this stupid law down as being unconstitutional. Either way, guess who's not getting my vote in September?

Well, technically they can't. Member states can do whatever they like, just take a look at what Italy is doing to the freedom of press and speech.

This site seems fishy! Take one of the top-three IP addresses of DNS servers and enter it in google. You may be surprised to get any hits at all, but you will actually get a lot of them. Here is one:

Considering it is in the interest of large bureaucracies to solidify and increase powers of control that seems highly unlikely even if it were possible. |

Good call, what I did was I ran the IP's through IP-tracer and found one in a western European country like Austria or France. There's lots of other open DNS servers out there, even some official ones run by the OpenDNS project, so "shop around" |

Edited by: Evthron Macyntire on 20/06/2009 06:53:03 It should be safe to say that 99% of politicians will say whatever they can to get elected, after that they don't care about you. Never mind that they are supposed to be representing you, as that is what a democracy is, but rather, in reality they do what the party leader says.
At least in Canada it goes that way. Don't listen to people who tell you otherwise. It's once in a blue moon that someone votes against their party.
You are unlikely to get your message across unless you start disrupting the normal flow of life. Block traffic everywhere.

Meh, in 15 years or so the internet generation will be the people who are elected.
This is just old idiots trying to hold on to whatever power they have left. A last bid to get control back over the people's opinions.

Question is in 15 years will there be an internet left? Or will it end up like radio and TV?

This, and the other question is if there will be any more elections in 15 years.

Using proxy servers and changing your DNS is not (yet) outlawed in Germany, though I am sure they'll get to it eventually, given time. |

The sad thing of it all is that current politics are led by people who originally fought against such kinds of oppression... The 60's, vietnam, the rise of the new media, the idealistic movements of then...
I wonder when they forgot about all that. Bunch of sadistic hypocrits. Even worse, most of the population is too apathic to do anything against it, everyone always thinks that someone else will fix it.

i see it in the opposite way entirely. i see complete internet control and censorship as the inevitable result, with people only being allowed to do what is socially acceptable to do on the internet in the end.
right now it's the will of the people not to censor the internet, but our minds can be changed if we are told one thing over and over again, even if it isn't true, especially if scare tactics are used. Even on the internet- if you have enough money you're going to get your message displayed on ads, and bumped up in social networking sites, etc etc. one thing that will never change is that the powerful always want more power. the powerless can always be convinced to give it up.
look at china, where the message is almost completely controlled. most people dont even know to dissent. so long as they are fed they are happy. that's the end result i see for all societies and by extensions the internet.

You're being quite pessimistic. In general, people do not enjoy being subject to any form of censorship; witness the backlash against Green Dam, for example. No-one in power can ever afford to upset too large a fraction of the population, and I don't know of any country where the majority believe that heavily state-censored internet is better than open access. |
