Would be kewl if we had a ranking system throughout EVE.
Each kill is rated by the number of skill points of the person killed.
So someone going around killing 2mil skill-point characters vs. someone going around killing 15mil skill-point characters should be weighted in some way.
Top 10 Most Player Ship kills in the last week Top 10 Most Player Ship kills in the last month Top 10 Most Player Ship kills ever
Top 10 Most NPC Ship kills in the last week Top 10 Most NPC Ship kills in the last month Top 10 Most NPC Ship kills ever
Top 10 Most Pod kills in the last week Top 10 Most Pod kills in the last month Top 10 Most Pod kills ever
Top 10 Player Bounty Hunters in the last week Top 10 Player Bounty Hunters in the last month Top 10 Player Bounty Hunters ever
Top 10 NPC Bounty Hunters in the last week Top 10 NPC Bounty Hunters in the last month Top 10 NPC Bounty Hunters ever
Top 10 Most Player Ship kills by a Corporation in the last week Top 10 Most Player Ship kills by a Corporation in the last month Top 10 Most Player Ship kills by a Corporation ever
Top 10 alliances/corp POS'es destroyed
Top 10 Miners
Top 10 Richest Individuals Top 10 Richest Corps Top 10 Richest Alliances
Top 10 Illegal (non-war) killers (corp/individuals)
Top 10 Agent Standings (corp/individuals).
The next category compares Loyalty Points (LPs):
Top 10 Most loyal Amarr pilots Top 10 Most loyal Caldari pilots Top 10 Most loyal Gallente pilots Top 10 Most loyal Minmatar pilots
Perhaps have an auto reward system that gives some recognition to each of the top 3 people in each category...maybe a dog tag or something...I don't know.
All these "lists" should be updated weekly or daily during downtime and be available from the EVE Insider link on the EVE webpage - this way we don't have enormous lag on the webpage like the Character Info link.
Also have the links to the portaits of the pilots and their corporation for recognition.
And make sure that its anopt-in program (thanks Andrue), so not only do you limit database storage, but those who want to stay anonymous.

I'd like to see that as well. Only difference would be to give players the option of keeping their name off the list for anonomity. --

The CA killsystem (CMS) already has many of those details, with full top 10 rankings by corp, player, etc. It gas also some rather extreme levels of functionality (including kill searches, date limitation, full client integration and a load of other stuff)
If CCP want to buy rights to it, contact Jaabaa

I agree and would like to see it extended to ores mined, profits made from market. Items built etc.
I would have it reset to zero every month (or perhaps week) so that noobs could join in.
A big problem with Eve IMO is a lack of goals. Adding in a rating system gives everyone a goal for very little effort. -- (Battle hardened miner)

For the love of god and all that is holy, do not implement a score board. it will ruin the game very badly as it does any game that it is implemented in. it just fuels those who have too much time and oversized egos and creates flame fests and ego stroking.
score boards severly degrade gaming experience. "I'm comin' for ya, and Hell's comin' with me!" |

Mabye not a full out stat system, but the person who has the most podkills in the last 7 days at any given time should have their name show up a cool color when you look at them, or in local :>. Tie-dye would work, or mabye make their ship pink!

Edited by: Admiral IceBlock on 17/10/2004 12:18:24 there should be a system like you get points when you kill some one, but there should also a restriction on the system. so you cant just go to a n00b area and kill tons of them. the points you get for a kill should really be based on skillpoint of yourself and the victim. its not the best option but there is no other option left is there?
but as the lord said, it will stroke some egos..
but a list of top richest corps and stuff like that would seem cool.

Trust me, don't do it. Every mmorpg pretty much has rankings and it just turns the game into 'Who can get the highest score' rather than the 'Help your mates out even if you die doing so' which it is at the moment. Keep eve 1337 free please.

no rankings please.. statistics are ok though.. like how much gametime someone spent mining, docked, on autopilot..etc. rankings just turn this game into a giant fps fragzone on who can get the highest rank, so rankings are bad mkay.. even if there was a top 10 sexiest male characters (of which i would be at the top of) i still think its bad _____________________________________ Perpetually driven, your end is our beginning. ELO based ratings systems work by the comparison of your rating to the ratings of your opponents - where a player with a higher rating would generally be expected to beat a player with a lower rating.
If a player won more times than they were expected to win (based upon their rating) then their rating would be adjusted upward. However, if they won fewer times than were expected to, then their rating would be adjusted downward.
As an example of an ELO based ratings system try Yahoo Games.

Top 10 alliances/corp POS'es destroyed
The idea of these rankings is to infact add 'goals' to those willing to work hard.
Will that mean people will work sepecifically to gain the top position in one of these rankings...well yes.
If they are working hard then hopefully they are having fun since they are investing so much time/effort to attain a ranking.
Will it encourage certain types of behavior...yes.
Will some people be more offensive...probably.
Will some people POD more just to POD...probably.
If you want to make it an RP thing have CONCORD come out with a "Weekly Report of Activity in the Known Universe". This weekly report would include all the Top 10 lists we discussed here.
Currently the only quantitive measurement of PvP ranking is the amount of someone's bounty. The higher the bounty the more "renowned" that person is (i.e. Tank CEO when he was the first pirate to have over a 25mil bounty).
If these ranking give people "goals" that they want to work for then I think thats a good thing for this game.
I would hope that the statistics would only be calculated either weekly or during downtime...not continuously so we don't have the same problem we have with the Character viewer.

I'm inclined to say no. If such statistics were implemented in this game, then they would very quickly take over as the prime objective for many people. There are plenty of online FPS league tables out there, I thought Eve was better than that.
What I would prefer to see is these statistics being monitored covertly by CCP, and used to improve the level of news reporting and storyline interaction. We want to know that over 70 ships (when I last checked) were destroyed in a single system last night. We want to hear a report from Concord who was most involved. Why shouldn't we get reports on who the most 'succesful' pirates have been in the last week ?
The statistics should enhance the game, not be the game.

Yes, excellent idea. How about publishing it on Monday mornings so we can all look at how we did over the last week? That might deter ganking because you can't work on your figures as you play. I would also suggest limiting the range of players to ten either side.
A late thought:Don't include combat stats. With Shiva fighters get POS as goals and can win a war by bankrupting the opposition. Reserve the stats for the carebears.
Another late thought:This can fit in with role playing. It's unlikely Concord would publish combat stats for fear of encouraging fighting. Plus most fights are in 0.0 and why should Concord know what happens down there (shame about Kill Mails but most people seem to like them)? But market sales, mining stats and other carebear related activities will be of interest. Concord (or the Empires at least) will want to encourage competition in those areas to stimulate the economy. -- (Battle hardened miner)

What do you mean 'take over as the prime objective'? What prime objective have you found so far?
* Increasing the number of digits when you view your wallet? * Watching a group of pixels turn from black to orange to white and back to black? * Looking at yet another cloudy backdrop with white dots? * Staring at another bunch of rocks?
Eve is supposed to be a game and games are supposed to be competitions (not always but Eve is PvP and so is obviously meant to be competitive). Right now there is no one to compete with. Well obviously you can choose to put yourself in the line of fire because you like watching explosions but there's really no point in it. No one suffers significantly (which is good) but neither do they lose strategically. Wars are lost because one side gets bored.
Shiva at least introduces POS which is a reasonable goal if you can find enough people to help build and maintain them. We shall see whether enough people can stay together long enough to make them decent goals. It also introduces a charge for wars and that means you can break a corp financially to stop the war.
Unfortunately like it or not a lot of people don't want to fight. POS will not help those people. You might think you can ignore those people but Eve would fail within weeks if all the 'carebears' left the game.
Limit the stats to players immediately above/below you in the table but show everyone's position. Publish the stats once a week and they become a long term goal - that should deter the gankers from playing with Eve on one side and the 'score sheet' on the other.

There are plenty of online FPS league tables out there, I thought Eve was better than that.
Whatever gave you that idea? Eve is a game, that's all. Worse, it's a product. CCP support it because it brings in money. They are not working to some higher purpose. As soon as Eve ceases to cover its cost CCP will pull the plug. In order to survive Eve has to change into whatever the market wants it to change into.

Agreed, but they can be a part of the game. If you don't want them don't read them. Maybe even have CCP make it an opt-in feature. Don't bother recording the stats for anyone unless they opt-in. That might even help reduce server load in gathering and displaying the stats. There are a lot of casual players out there (I'm one) who have been playing for six months and are now 'kicking water'. Those players aren't hard core enough to want to spend hours chasing their tails for the 'excitement' of some cute explosion graphics. -- (Battle hardened miner)

Since it'll be an opt-in program basically the RP reasoning is this:
Your flight computer update CONCORD or some other "reporting agency", (make a corporation named Gallop ), receives this information that you allow to be collected.
Weekly, say every Monday or whatever the stats are updated for everyone to see under EVE Insider.

Thumbs down. If you need to stroke your ego by your number of frags go play some Counterstrike or Doom.
EVE is about so much more than the number of kills and it would be a pitty to degrade it that way.

By making it an opt-in system those who are not interested in it will never see it or be included in the statistics.
For those who want to make this a "goal" can partisipate in this ranking system.

Doesn't make a difference unless only kills of people participating count for the ranking.
I bet it would cause lag if the system had to find out who the heck has to get points for the ranking in a mixed engagement - like the criminal flagging does :P

Yes but criminal flagging is supposed to be realtime.
If we went for the weekly summary option then all the server needs to do is increment or decrement a couple of counters when the kill mail gets sent out. The harder computational work would get done during Sunday's daily DT.
In any case I think restricting the stats to none combat operations addresses these issues. Those players who already engage in PvP don't need any encouragement because (I don't know how, but good for them) they already get a sense of achievement from blowing up other people's ships.
Having commercial stats makes sense from an RP perspective and gives the non combat oriented pilots (and there's a lot of us-might even be the majority) a goal to aim for. I agree that having a spotty teenager smack talk about how many ships he's killed is undesirable but I really can't see the same thing happening with amount of Veldspar mined or number or number of items sold.
Hmmm. In fact why give the specific details? Just give the relative positions. That leaves very little to brag about since all you know is that you are above someone in the list. It still leaves something to work toward though for those who are in need of a little motivation. -- (Battle hardened miner)

m0o didn't become the most feared pilots in the galaxy by being top of a high score list.
The Curse Alliance isn't hated because the weekly stats say they're the largest alliance.
People don't flee local when the name Tank CEO appears in local because it says No. 1 Ganker next to his picture.
You may not agree with what I've said above, but I guarantee 99.9% of the people reading this post recognise the people I've mentioned. So where's the league table that told them ?
Eve is such a beautifully intricate game, with a level of player immersion that I have never seen before. In Shiva, players will have the opportunity to form Alliances that will stand side by side with the major npc factions and potentially influence the development of prime fiction within Eve. Do you believe that this was the initial intention of CCP, or do you think that the actions of players in forming these alliances led the developers to move the game in such a direction ?
Players are forging their place in Eve folk-lore, crafting the game as it develops. Yet some people want to reduce this to league tables and meaningless statistics.
It's sad; very, very sad.

You still seem to be fixated on combat.
Oh well, first I'll reiterate a solution for combat stats: The stats should be localised around your own character stats. Tank CEO's combat performance would only be known for sure to ten other people. Even they would only that that he was five players above them. Whether this represents five thousand kills or five they will never know.
Now for the bit you seem unable to acknowledge or understand: I've suggested that combat stats not be covered. As I said in my last post they probably aren't needed anyway. Something must be keeping you guys at each other's throats and you seem happy about it.
A set of stats for commercial operations pretty much destroys your above argument/objection. Or are you going to reply and give a list of famous miners or traders? -- (Battle hardened miner)

So out of 50k accounts I would know the 5 people slightly better than me and the 5 slightly worse ?
Odds of me knowing these people well enough to care.... Sounds like a pretty pointless system to me.

Ever bought/sold at Naga prices ?
Ever entered the BIG lottery ?
Ever seen people whining about Xanadu aquiring another tech II bpo ?
Keep the arguments coming coming. The simple fact is that anything a league table would provide is already being achieved by people in game, and with a lot more depth and intrigue than a bunch of numbers will produce.
You want to be famous ? Earn it, and prove it to the community yourself. You want to compete with others, then find people to compete with directly rather than a name on a list that means nothing to you other than they beat you by 0.1 this week.

This idea has been suggested many times before on Idea Lab (where ideas go to die) but hopefully some CCP peeps will see it here.
I'm all for PvP statistics. However, the essentials are ship and pod kills in the last week and alltime. Everything else is optional if it causes tremendous server load.
Top 10 lists of other activities are great, but it is probably too much to ask for right now with Shiva content locked down.
One other idea I would like to see implemented is a Local broadcast of kills of each players' ship and capsule:
Crixon destroyed Oveur's ship! Crixon destroyed Oveur's capsule! Angel Impaler destroyed Crixon's ship!
Only the person rendering the final blow would be broadcast this way. Everyone in a fleet battle can get a quick read on who's doing the kills. Also in isolated systems, everyone in local can get an idea of what's going on in the system.

Hell yeah I do. I know many players do as well. There's nothing like competition and bragging rights to light a fire in peeps' asses. Participation and fun in PvP would go through the roof with stats. Every pro athlete is obsessed with their stats, and so are game players.
I came from DAoC, and people would fight tooth and nail to get up on the top lists every week:
http://guilds.camelotherald.com/realms/war.php?server=Percival&t=weekchampions
The major downside is that these stats were not viewable in game. Eve stats, pvp and otherwise, must be viewable in game for better impact and recognition.
I desperately need these stats to be proud of. I have no life, failed out of school, and am forced to be in a stoned dope-induced haze while autopiloting my courier missions BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE PVP STATS!

No, I don't.

The major downside is that these stats were not viewable in game. Eve stats, pvp and otherwise, must be viewable in game for better impact and recognition.
I desperately need these stats to be proud of. I have no life, failed out of school, and am forced to be in a stoned dope-induced haze while autopiloting my courier missions BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE PVP STATS!

I disagree.
1. I want them to go to my head.
2. They should be kept on a different server than forums.

1.Is fair enough. I don't agree but it's a possibility.
2.Is no excuse. It's like that poster who commented that we should get rid of the character sheet because we can use pen and paper. Helllooooo! My parents used pen and paper. What's next? Pen runs out of ink? Oooh let's go to chalk and slate.
D'oh!
