Here's my problem; I work in a LAN center, and whether im working or not, im usually there playing EVE on 2 PCs. Several times a day a client comes up to me and asks what it is that im playing, and i respond by telling him EVE Online. And when the client asks about the game, i've no clue where to begin. How do you convey the complexity and depth that is EVE without spending several hours talking to the guy whos asking, multiple times a day.
I usually go with "Dude, this is the most complicated computer game you have ever/will ever see, and if you don't have an above average IQ you will fail abysmally at this game" which is pretty much true, but i don't want to turn potential CCP customers away either. I'm looking for something to say to them that might interest them, without having to spend an hour explaining how the game works. Any ideas for a quick promo speach to get these guys interested and off my back at the same time?

Yawn. Does saying **** like this actually work for you? I guess it must, at least with your boss, since you're apparently keeping your job.
Tell him whateverTF you want, and then offer him a GTC and a couple million ISK, and your "turning potential CCP customers away" issue is solved, easily enough.

A game centered around spaceships set in another galaxy where everyone plays on the same server.
If they want to know more you could tell them that everthing is player driven; from the mining and manufacturing to the fleet battles for territorial control. If they still want to know more, don't get into too much detail. Show them the butterfly effect video instead.
You don't have to tell them how much you like it; it's pretty obvious since you're playing it. No need to mention how hard it is or anything like that. Let them find out on their own if they're interested. If you sound to eager, you're going to put them off. If you sound to uninterested, they will be like "meh, whatever".

I tell people that it's a very hardcore sci-fi game with spaceships and great economy.I also tell them it is full of elitists and caters to grief style play. I then mention that it is very complicated and requires time to learn to play but can be a lot of fun if they like the games play style.

Good read, though I skimmed over the 60-page John Galt monologue (yes, that was pretty much the core of the book; however, people with the patience to read a novel that size probably get the message without the author having to explicitly write the message. Bad stylistic decision, and after reading the first few pages of the monologue, I wasn't going to punish myself by reading the rest of it. It still took me at least half an hour to skim read the thing). _________

EVE is a massively multiplayer online game. There is only one server unlike other MMO (massively online game) and at every time of the day at least 25 thousands pilots are logged in. There is a deep economy and controls are not really instinctive. In short; Its hard to grasp. But anyway, its the best game for someone that dont want to invest real time in it, since you character improve while you are offline. Combat is very slow and not very deep... Think of it as a strategy game where you control only one unit.
Thats about it.
It take 15 seconds to say that... and resume it quite well, imo.
Good luck! LOGIC & MORE LOGIC

This is how I sum up EVE: frustratingly fun
The frustrating part: It seems that it can take far too long to get anything done -- flying around buying modules, fitting a ship, getting to where you have to be, finding decent pvp, salvaging, all the session change stuff (docking, switching ships once docked, undocking, etc). Too much time waiting.
The fun part: Shooting stuff . And the rewarding feeling of winning a fight or finishing a mission and collecting all the bounties/rewards/loot/salvage.

WoW in space, sans charm and with added brutality. Badly done futuristic fantasy (WoW has more realistic physics, for heavens sake! 8-} ) Sorry, but having played EVE for quite a while, it was a huge disappointment, only the social side kept me in the game after the first few months. Then again, I was expecting an SF game and hoping for interesting combat (I'm a 'hardcore' SF fan, with much experience of historical wargaming). If you don't approach EVE with the expectations I had, then maybe you'll enjoy it more. Ultimately, the game is what it is, and if that happens to ring your bell, then great, go have fun playing it - each to their own, etc. My main criticism of the game as it is is that the UI is almost entirely a frustrating pile of rubbish, and CCP would be well advised to sort out the UI before they put effort into anything else at all. That I don't actually like the game as it is is (poor game balance IMO, too unrealistic physics/physically, game mechanics that make it feel like you're in an interconnected series of broom cupboards instead of a huge 5,000 star cluster) just means that there's a mismatch between what I want from a game and what this game provides. Clearly a lot of people do find it a lot of fun, and stuff that doesn't harm others and make people smile is A Good Thing in my book. Best thing is - give it go, do a 14 day free trial, preferably aided by an already experienced player. I cannot agree with the original poster regarding depth of game or the complexity though - EVE lacked sufficient depth for me, and whilst it's intricate, I wouldn't say it's particularly more so than other games I've played.

Originally by: Esme Nomarra WoW in space, sans charm and with added brutality. <threadjack> Does anyone know of the tabletop rpg game/book called paranoia?? its hilarious and exactly like eve in a way.
In Paranoia you live in a future society run by a computer. The 3 basic tenets of life are Trust noone. always keep your laser pistol handy. the computer is your friend.
I recomend the book (if you can find it) Paranoia(title deleted for security reasons)
I wont go into teh book, but it is ****ing hilarious really.
But the rpg game let me tell you. Your team plays a group of trouble shooters who basically try to help teh computer catch commies, mutants and traitors.
Then when you start the game you get a mutant ability and you are part of a secret society. So you know your friends are all traitors and mutants. You basically go around screwing everyone over everyone as hard and as often as possible.good laughs.

Eve is like paranoia, only in space and you dont have to pass secret notes to the gm saying you electrocute the first person at the table who uses a device powered by electricity.

It's a spaceship mmo, it has good pvp and pve and the entire market is player controlled which is cool. Its not an easy game though and there is alot of depth. Then you sell them a gtc.
You sound like an arrogant **** and I won't be surprised if your business closes soon. Also playing whilst at work? á á
