Hello,
Following problems are widespread :
- Turrets ( Artillery ), Missile launchers and enemy fire sound effects stop working after a few minutes when zoomed in on ship. You can get them back when disabling and re-enabling sound in the ingame menu. Other sound effects like targetting, warping, etc, don't have issues. - When zoomed out to the point where you no longer hear sensor booster and tracking enhancer, the turrets, launchers and enemy fire sound effects keep working, altho if one goes too far away from their ship, you can no longer hear incomming lasers. Thus sensor boosters, tracking enhancers and other modules overwrite turret, launcher and enemy fire sound effects. - When Artillery actually works, or when using Autocannons, after there will be a desync between actually firing guns and the sound effects. Alot of the sound effects get skipped. - When mission specific music is playing ( like when jumping into a mission thru a gate ), all module effects disapear. You can get them back when you start playing the jukebox music again. Targetting and other sound effects keep working. - Occasional crackling/popping noises. - The Jukebox does not work, after playing x amount of songs, it just stops playing.
Following will not help :
- Updating Bios, Windows, Drivers, etc. - Removing EVE Online including cache and settings. - Completely reinstalling OS - And thus also completely reinstalling EVE - Using Windows XP, Vista or Win 7 - Disabling advanced, non-essential, features for X-FI ( on the creative software or on XP and Win7 ). - Changing ingame settings - Running Windowed and fullscreen mode - Using 1 or 2 clients - Zooming further away from ship : sortoff a workaround - Disabling and re-enabling sound : fix for a few minutes
These issues are not client related, but bugs since Apocrypha released.
It is time these issues get fixed and an option to disable positional sound is implemented.

Support for fixing the sound issues. Some of us actually do have the sound turned on when we play.
PS. What the f¡u¡c¡k? Who makes a new interface for something (the jukebox) that broken but doesn't fix it. Why don't repaint my car that doesn't run?

I like playing with sound on, but never when I'm in combat. The sounds don't necessarily work in the first place, and not only does having sound turned on lags the game, it makes the game more likely to crash too (it's a matter of "how soon" rather than "will it"). STO, albeit dumbed down severely, runs multiple clients flawlessly with the sound on.
I wonder where CCP screwed the pooch on that score.

Absolutely unacceptable sound for a game that looks this nice, and has this many subscribers. Crackly sound with Invulnerability Fields, Missile Launchers missing sounds/playing them at the wrong time...it just needs to be fixed.
I can't really get my wife into the game if I explain the sound problems as "well, that's uh...that's just how it is."

Interesting enough, sound issues seem to have some kind of tradition in EVE: CSM 3 - CCP Meeting Minutes º 6.3.1 "Sound Engine Woes"
I'd suggest to ask CSM to have sound issues given a higher priority towards CCP, reflecting their repeated ocurrence.

That is similar to the first points I mentioned. What I mean with your quote is that we don't hear explosions from ships we have destroyed. Well the fact that you hear exploding your missiles is a bit different.
I'll test that out a bit more myself and also make my OP a bit more clear.

While they're fixing the sound engine, they should also add options to turn off specific sounds (they're all generated by pod anyway). i.e. I hate the new shield hardener sound, it's very annoying, and it doesn't really hold any important information. Why can't I tell my pod not to generate that.
I'm currently at the point of trying to extract eve res files and replacing that damn shield hum with a silent wav (or whatever format they use). Same for in-station sounds.

The sound is off currently. This is the ONLY game I have EVER played with the sound off. If CCP is only going to half-ss sound, they're better off ignoring it entirely, as most players just keep it off.
That said, sound is a key part of movies and games. There are other things more important, but at some point, I would like to play the game with the sound on.

What is going on CCP, why isnt this problem fixed yet. I just checked how long ago it was when I first had a post with this problem. 13/03/09.
Whats the point having nice graphics if the sound sucks. Shield hardeners are to loud, missile sound cuts in and out. And now I have no targeting sound!

I sincerely support this measure.
Fix the damned problem already. 3 of my real life friends and corp mates have left the game solely due to the intolerably terrible audio. Everything from onboard, to auzentech to X-fi - it blows for all...
I sent in (and so did almost every corp member of ours) in June 2009 a petition ... 1 of 2 times their help simply sucked.
I posted about the "go into setup, disable and re-enable your audio - this generally gets it back for a bit for most. Jump an acceleration gate and you must repeat..."
Pretty game, but who cares when an invulnerability field will make you want to cut your wrists after 5 minutes of droning.
They implemented the "alarm" for 25% shields in response to the fact that half the time if you were doing say market stuff while in space, you may not even notice you are getting hammered by pirates!
When my Subscription is done in September, so am I if this isn't fixed. Completely unacceptable for a 6+ year old game. I don't want to see a single tidbit of extra content until this is repaired. "Downgrade" the audio to pre-Apocrypha if need be, but fix it!
I am enjoying STO in the mean time and have bought a lifetime sub to it. Not as good all'round as Eve, but the sound works.

So, some updates...
I sent a bug report with a description of all the problems most of us are having and in their reply they said that they can't reproduce the problems on their computers. They also said that my driver was old but the last driver that creative made for my model (x-fi fatal1ty) was in July 2009. Anyway, i switched to my onboard card (Realtek HD Audio) installed the latest drivers (22 Jan 2010) and i must say that EVE sounds a bit better. It's not perfect, but definitely an improvement. So if you also have Realtek on the m/b try downloading the new drivers and pray (the latter is the most important one)...

I'm curious as to what version of the Wwise SDK framework is being used. For some reason, EVE can't load vorbis data, so I would imagine it'd be pretty outdated. Wwise has supposedly come a long way in features and quality since 2008.
Whether a current framework is being used or not, I'd like CCP to give a rat's ass about the obvious sound issues in this game.

I have tested with 3 different systems and 4 different sound devices, this does not fix the issues.
In the end I am using an X-FI music with latest drivers and all advanced features turned off.
This works just as good ( read : bad ) as onboard sound or a logitech usb headset ( which is a sound device in itself ).
Previously I had all my test hardware described in the OP, but I ran against maximum character limit so removed it in favor of listing more sound issues.
Like I said, it is not a client hardware or OS/Driver problem, but a problem with the EVE software.

The fact that your onboard sound card works better is probably because there are no advanced features used, or perhaps you may have indeed have better drivers for the onboard sound card than you had for your creative. Either way, you encountered a noob GM that was selling you BS.
I have tested with 3 different systems and 4 different sound devices, this does not fix the issues.
In the end I am using an X-FI music with latest drivers and all advanced features turned off ( EAX,d Advanced features in Windows 7, etc ).

Like I said, it is not a client hardware or OS/Driver problem, but a problem with the EVE software.
I totally agree with you there, but having to deal with noob GMs is, unfortunately, part of the process. I can't believe that anyone is unable to reproduce the problems on their systems and that just leads me to one of 2 conclusions. 1. They follow the general line "sell a lot of BS when they ask you for sound problems" or 2. they programmed the sound so that it works only on the specific hardware configuration they use (i asked them to give me a configuration that actually works. Of course no reply there).
Anyway, seems that no sound fix is on it's way and i thought i'd give some updates that might or might not help the others.

I welcome your efforts for the cause, and perhaps I should also file another petition and bug report, and keep bugging them until they acknowledge the problem or give me a working spec.
I have quite a bit of hardware at my disposal to test, and if they tell me to get some exotic hardware, then I'll go get it and tell the players and CCP about my findings. But I am pretty certain that no one at CCP can give me a computer spec that actually works 99% of the time.

Not sure what you mean.
The point here is that on some occasions the second client just does not make any sound at all. When it does work, you can still mute or disable it as you see fit ...
However, personally I have only experienced this on few occasions, mostly when trying to disabling and re-enabling sound, then all of a sudden I can't hear sounds from one of the clients. Or when I am switching between clients, quitting and restarting them, then sometimes it get's messed up.
Either way, it is a bug, but for me personally a minor one, because I don't experience this often, however some players experience this more often.

There have been many times where I have been in a mission and have had no sound from any of the weapons. CCP should focus on re-doing sound for the next patch, since it is very important.

I support this !
What we need is software stereo downmix option in audio options. This will re-route all sounds from 7.1 DirectX Accelerated sound to stereo output only. This feature allready was in the game:
http://www.netsky.org/audioQRae.PNG
If player unchecked "enable hardware acceleration" it disabled 7.1 sound and output it to the stereo. This was then removed from unknown reason ! I want that option back.

I wholeheartedly support it. So tired of the ambient sounds, drowning out everything else or just never ending. Station ambient sounds while in space, etc. Or my artillery falling silent in the middle of a fight. It's sad, but a very common statement from my friends who play EVE is: "Eve has sound?". Because they play with it off, rather than deal with it.

Sound should deserve a better treatment. I mean, EVE Online is probably one of the only games today where it is better to get sound off, as it is nearly off by itself anyway or too buggy to be used.
Also, CCP should include the possibility to customize sounds. _______ With the NGE, I'm sorry about the mistake we made. We screwed up and didn't listen to the fans when we should have. - John Smedley, CEO of Sony Online Entertainment |

I support fixing the sound. I'd really like it to be like it was back in Empyrean age, where you heard everything!
On the same note though, the new engine is aimed for a more realistic approach. Would it not be so hard to include an option to choose between the two sound schemes?

Izen; You mean the option to choose between a sloppy and accurate sound picture :-) Or was it mute since irl space is soundless.
Thank you CyberGhost for this detailed post covering most of these non rewarding sound issues. I must say its easy for me to recognize most of these sound bugs you mention during gameplay. Wonder why ccp haven't got the same priority for the sound engine compared to efforts applied to the graphic content. Its a major fail to underestimate sound quality/picture/track, something developers learned back in the late eighties. You can enjoy the radio, but MTV on mute/cracking on & off doesn't rock.
Great idea to use CSM for this approach, hope it will shake em up !

It would solve so much if this sound engine could overlap sounds more efficiently. I cannot hear my turret fire due to my armor hardeners, or cannot hear anything at all once that damned stargate chatter starts and monopolizes my headphones. All I'd need is a sepia effect for the graphics and then I could merely pretend I am watching an old-timey silent movie, with an obnoxious unintelligible chattering person sitting behind me.
/me changes the color balances on the monitor and throws some photoplay music into the jukebox...
I would merely like to see another post on what is currently being done in the sound department. The devblog that was linked in the OP is largely out of date, most everything mentioned in there has been dealt with. Many thanks go to the sound guys for fixing things like the popping sounds, I know you guys are truly trying to improve things; just let us know what you are trying to work on at the moment.
PS: Thanks for the email CyberGh0st. I am glad to see someone who cares enough about this issue to dedicate a significant amount of effort towards it. Send me another email if you can think of any way for me to further help, I would be happy to assist. |

Losing half the effects or having a repeating effect swamp/overwhelm others is a really big shame.
Also for the jukebox thing, I've noticed that it *is* continuing to play a track (you can see the counter), but it's just silent, rather than moving to next one?

Edited by: Cinori Aluben on 28/04/2010 18:53:13 This is very important, and as you mentioned, needs to be brought up by the CSM again to just re-encourage more progress in this regard. They need to follow through and finish/polish what they've started, and the CSM needs to keep on their backs.
SUPPORTED.
If you value giving priority to fixes like this, things that would make your daily EVE experience more enjoyable, vote for Cinori Aluben. My priority is that CCP make these seemingly "Little Things" a priority.

This needs to be made a high priority. I, like many other players, have just outright disabled sound because there is absolutely no reason to have it on. Theo only sound that consistently seems to work is the looping background space-y noise.
I would love to actually have working sound effects for once

I have also sound disabled becouse when I am hit by my enemies I only hear a "Beep" instead of the turret sound/impact sound. I hope this is being fixed soon, EVE has some really nice audio and ****es me off....

As an addendum, before I came back when Dominion came out, I had stopped playing a little after Empyrean Age came out, and I did not have the osund bugs they have now.
Fix. Now. CCP.

Got my vote.
I play with sound turned off because the sound is so buggy and annoying. Oh and engine trails so I can tell that I'm moving. |

Supported CCP please give this some priority, we under stand that things are bussey there, but this isue has been on going for a while now and it seems that nothing is being done about it. I also would like to see scroling out having no effect on sounds, where it pertains to my ship, hearing guns going off or other sounds is part of the experience, dont make proximity to your ship in the view a perameter for sounds. Maybe a few more options also, one i can think of is the shield, armor and hull warnings, i like those but can they be put on a seperate slider each, or at least combine all three on there own slider, turn them down so there not blaring, then you barly here some other stuff as there part of the "world sound level" slider (least i think thats the one), put them on there own slider. So come on CCP, it's time to give us working sound don't ya think.

I remember back in 2004, when sounds worked great.
Zoomed in = loud, plus you could here what was after you in the distance.
Zoomed out = just a little bit of everything..
Sounds in eve used to be very complimentary to the game.
Now they suck

First impressions from Tyrannis regarding sound :
- Jukebox seems fixed. - Artillery seems fixed. - Incomming fire seems fixed. - Issues when entering a mission seems fixed.
Not much detail regarding most of these on the patch notes, but stealth fixes are fixes nonetheless.
So for me, 2 big issues have been fixed ( not hearing Artillery and Incomming fire ).
Still a big issue is still open : not hearing explosions. I just destroyed a slave pen, which had an explosion so big that my whole screen was filled, but could not hear a thing !
So I am still advocating for an option where we can turn off positional sound.
I will update the OP later on after some more testing.

And i don't wanna turn off eve sound,k so

Updated the OP to reflect the fixes done by CCP since first posting this proposal.
While most of the major bugs are ironed out now, the tweaking of the positional sound has to be reviseted.

Quote: Now on to the issue, some items, like outgoing fire, have been tweaked a while ago, and together with latest bufixes work pretty well. However we can still not hear explosions of destroyed ships or buildings as close as 4000 meters ( maybe even closer ). Therefore the weight of explosions should be increased alot. When I destroy a large building from 70km I still want to hear the explosion, as was the case pre-Apocrypha. Also incomming enemy fire fades away too fast ( when zooming out ), outgoing turret fire on the other hand stays audible long enough ( even when zoomed out quite far ), so that is working well now imho.
Today I did The Score/Sansha Nation level 4 using paradise cruise missiles from my CNR. More than 50% of impacts on rats were soundless, when launching missiles it was deadly quiet as well. I guess 1 out of 10, the launching sound appeared. My single hybrid turret however "clicked" every time when fired). Using my laptop with a different soundcard, I still get the same missing sound picture. Cant figure out if its a technical issue or an intended sound nerf aimed at giving a more soft experience. In my world its fail both ways.

Hmm, okay yes impacts on rats will be soundless if they are too far away, that is pretty much the same issue as with explosions.
Launching missiles works for me currently, I will retest, and try with different missiles and launchers.
Hybrids are probably comparable to projectiles in terms of sound coding, so I think all turrets are still fixed for now :p

THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY ANNOYING IN JUKEBOX.
EVE should save jukebox status for each client separately.
Lets say you have 2 accounts. The first one should play EVE music. The second should not. If you log in and log out of the first account, it doesn't matter what was the config for the second account; when you log in to the second account, music will be played. Because the last active account was playing music. Thats a kind of bug, or lack of feature.

I assume you run the 2 accounts from the same installation, if you make seperate copies of the game for each account, you should not experience this problem.
Of course if you run a great number of accounts ( like 5+ ) this could become an issue with patching and harddisk space ( you need to path each copy seperatly ).
