Edited by: Triniton on 14/04/2010 13:17:21 Edited by: Triniton on 14/04/2010 13:12:08 Last night members of Zombie Inc started a massive volcano under a small glazier in Iceland. http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/04/14/iceland-evacuates-hundreds-near-restless-volcano/ Its considerably larger than the one that just ended nearby and could last over two years.
Since evacuation has been completed Zombie Inc will move in and seize the carebears lifestock.
You can follow the volcano on http://www.icenews.is/

It's an AP story, and not an original Fox opinion/drama/faux-news piece. So it's probably true that the volcano is going to erupt, melt the glaciers, and wash the Icelandians into the ocean where their frozen corpses will bob upon the waves as shark sized popsicles.

So Fox News isn't a subsidiary of The Onion? Hmm I think it is now, because the Fox News logo was used in that one - and you can only do that without penalty if you own the company
Volcano erupting in Iceland - awesome! I wish I could see that for myself. You could say: WIN
However the amount of FAIL in this clip is so much off the scale, that a FAIL tag and the usual Picard-Riker-Double-Facepalm link should just be omitted on this one.

Screwing up trying to say an admittedly complicated word in a language with no common base while being pretty close is one thing. saying "too many letters" and just skipping it is a different story.

OK...
Someone explain this to me.
Discounting news items centered around politics and partisanship...how is Fox any different than any other news outlet? I mean...I know that Fox and MSNBC are two sides of the same coin...but on basic news items...how are they different.
Ok...I don't actually need someone to explain it to me...cuz the answer is "none"...I'm just seeing if we have people in the forum capable of painting a picture with a slightly more narrow brush.

Fox News makes its money by making news "entertaining." Headlines are slanted to be as dramatic as possible, generally along the lines of 'how the liberals in government are taking your money/religion/rights/whatever away' in order to invoke Outrage(tm) in the reader. Traditionally, the news is supposed to be neutral in tone in order to present the facts of the story to the reader so the reader can make an informed opinion.
Pretty much everything in the top half of the home page of the site is geared to invoke emotion. The actual news (aggregated from other news sources) starts after the breasts section (aka the Features & Faces section which contains a minimum of at least two sets of cleavage being shown at any one time.)
Without the drama, opinions and commentary, Fox News would just serve up other news organizations' stories (such as the AP, WSJ, and local news stations.) It's not like Fox News does in-depth investigative reporting or has reporters all over the place looking for stories.
However, Fox is making a profit and the other news organizations *cough*CNN*cough* seem to be trying to emulate Fox while still trying to maintain their journalistic integrity.

You do realize that Fox is a news distribution model...right...with a conservative slant. MSNBC is the same..just from the liberal side. My point is, we all villify Fox when other networks essentially do the same thing. They all take news that is sourced from some other outlet (at least in terms of the big US stations).

I'm speaking of news items that ARE NOT POLITICAL in nature. In that regards, the news they report is just as valid as any other outlet. I need people to stay on point here. I know there is a strong desire to veer off course in damnation of Fox News. I understand that hyperbole and exaggeration rule the day amongst the huddled masses. How is Fox's coverage of a volcano less valid than CNN's coverage of the same event? Again, I know what the answer is. I'm just challenging folks to be a little honest with themselves.

TO be completely honest, it would be hilarious, except that a good portion of the idiots in this country who vote no less actually watch the piece of crap news channel that it is and think it's a good, useful source of information.
My favorite show on FOX, the No Spin Zone, with Bill O' Lielly. Read Al Franken's Book, LIES. And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them. Great book, very funny, while also horrifyingly depressing... ===

Speaking of Fox News ...
1) Fox is owned by Rupert Murdock who founded his news empire on tabloids.
2) Fox News originally was nothing but a tabloid - but - because all the other media since Turner sold CNN are decidedly liberal in their slant - there was a market in the US for any news that wasn't from a Liberal POV. Thus - Fox taking up the Conservative News Banner. If there were a more responsible news source for conservatives - then they'd probably be watching that - but since the only thing they had before Fox was Rush ... Fox is actually a step up. They have hired some people who were working for other networks in the past to at least seem to give more substance to their work - however little there may actually be.
3) The liberals - especially MSNBC - are really pretty bad too. All of the regular media include commentary - unlabeled as such - as part of their stories.
4) This is nothing new. News Papers have ALWAYS been this way.
5) We have Richard Nixon to thank though for the current state of affairs. Up until Watergate - the only reason the networks broadcast the news at all - was because the FCC made them do it as part of their license. So - since they figured they'd never make any money off of the news anyway - you had them treating their news broadcasts as prestige sources. Then - when Watergate was on - they realized that people would watch the news if they sensationalize it enough - and that was the end of prestige journalism. After that - they wanted to make money off their news staffs.
As to erupting Volcano's ... well ... I for one would be happy to have this little ash problem sort itself out before it reaches me ... those air currents flow all the way around the planet though ... and then keep on going around it again ... so we'll just have to see how this effects the rest of us.

You don't have to be familiar with Icelandic to deduce that Eyjafjallaj÷kull probably doesn't contain 'yagogokle.'

Well that backfired didn't it?
When we send James Bond in to sort out the megalomaniac cash-strapped villain who's been holding the world to ransom from his hidden volcano lair, he usually settles for blowing up the rockets, henchmen, monorail and unfeasibly fluffy cat before escaping, just in the nick of time natch, with the bad man's favourite tart and shagging his way across the atlantic in an inflatable life raft.
This time he went a little over the top it appears.
We at MFI can only apologise for the unforseen consequences of our operative's actions, and rest assured there will be a full and thorough enquiry as soon as we can locate the bastard and crowbar him out of the turncoat slag, with the customary improbable name, that he'll no doubt be hanging out the back of when we find him.

Air Traffic is starting up again, slowly, most of the dangerous ash clouds appear to be gone for now. Several airlines are doing test flights and moving empty aircraft back to their home ports. Air Traffic is starting up again, slowly, most of the dangerous ash clouds appear to be gone for now. Several airlines are doing test flights and moving empty aircraft back to their home ports.
The test flights were in the wrong part of the sky - they were in pockets of clearer air where the airlines want to fly and are not representative of normal flight paths.
The UK's Met Office (who forecast the weather) sent up an observation aircraft and that DID see significant levels of engine damage from the ash cloud.
Whilst inconvenient, the flight ban is entirely justified versus the potential risks.

No, I'm not.
You are talking about the Hadley Climate Research Unit - they have nothing to do with the Met Office whatsoever.

Regardless, the Finnish military sent some planes up and they experienced corrosion and engine damage:

Another video of the volcano, showing the shockwaves and explosions.
On a side note: The foreign press has obviusly focused most on the fly-ban that followed the ash, but not reported about the terrible conditions of the people that live in that area, mostly farmers. The noise from the volcano, the pitch black conditions in the middle of the day and the loss of animals that have had to been put down since the new eruption. People can bearly go out of the house, get little to no sleep due to noise and seeing their lands being destroyed is truely tragic.

Until the eruption is over that is, volcanic ash is some of the most fertile soil types imaginable. That'll be green again in no time flat. But until then, yes it must be pretty horrible for those living just far away enough to not have been evacuated.

recorded history.
thing is, there seems to be evidence of an even larger explosion in the area, dating back to prehistoric times. Think the remains of it are a caldera in the area with still some activity.
