It's been like this since the beginning. More stuff gets added, less lag/database issues/broken game mechanics get fixed.
Right before every patch there's a tsunami of forumposts begging to fix the existing problems instead of adding more features and stuff :)
The unexpected downtime atm is just channeling this phenomenon somewhat hehe.
Oh yea and Dust will be a Bust.

Hold some time.. they are cleaning the hamsters... they need some bath and need to dry then perfect before putting back into the Hamster wheel to generate power to the Database.
It's a complex task that 50 engineers need to do on CCP side...
Do CCP know what tha hell is ITIL? I think not! This is a Service that is PAY, not FREE! So, they need to comply the Service Level Agreement of 1 hour downtime, not 2+ hours.

You know what CCP....it's taking a long time, it's probably gonna take a long time to fix, it's a nice day outside....call the day a write off and just go to the beach and get drunk and have a Barbeque instead. I got better things i'd rather be doing and I'm sure you have too...

If that would be that simple CCP still had done.
The main problem is that you can't simply fix that server.
You need to replace it with a complete different concept.
That is nearly impossible.
And beside this the game needs new stuff.
For CCP it's catch 22. They can't just fire their staff working in a routine together.
You can't just fire and hire and keep the quality finally.
Your complaints are generally right and we all love to see things in realtime by a "secret quantum technology" but don't do the mistake and look at such a BUSINESS like a naive child ... yes: finally it's a frakking business if you like it or not. Just keep in mind what the pre-development of such a game will cost BEFORE you can even start a beta test.
And so say all of us YOUR PAYING AN EFFING FORTUNE A YEAR CUSTOMERS!!!! Get a grip CCP!!! Adding new pretty little graphics to a game we can't even log onto is like chucking a deck chair off the Titanic. It's still going down...I now remember why I cancelled my account last year.

Really, their problem is the complete lack of regression testing on their part. This should come as no surprise they have continual "database issues", when they rely on the game players themselves to test their database. "We are having a mass test today, and would like 4000 players". I have an idea, get your DBA's to actually look at all the hooks for a change and do some regression tesing!!! You'd be amazed at the reliability you'd suddenly have if your DBA's actually did their job before releasing a "fix" or new ICP.

I've been with EVE for less then a month, and twice now you guys don't have your act together. I am not very convinced if I should keep playing this game. If it is true you guys run with MS SQL, then go figure, and consider Oracle. Also you guys should build a client for LINUX, am am sure you be doing much better. Stop feeding into MS monopoly!
Have you guys thought about reimbursing your customers if missed play time?
Very disappointing!
