It has clearly coloured projections (grey) and made to semifinals anyway. Maybe we should assume that colouring and shadowing (which helps to understand projections of composition) are different things?

Over the last several weeks we have been absolutely amazed by the massive creativity of EVE Online players and deviant artists who have submitted a tremendous number of entries in deviantARTÆs "EVE Online - Design a Ship" contest. To say that we are overwhelmed by the sheer beauty, creativity and originality of so many of these designs is an understatement.
We are aware thereÆs been some controversy regarding the semi-finalist selections and have been in contact with deviantART to offer any assistance we can. WeÆre waiting for further information from them and will update you when we have news to share.

Whether it is acceptable to shade certain pieces is pretty iffy. I would have said no, but they seem to have disagreed.
The gradient on the escort carriers, however, unambiguously violates every definition I can find for line drawings.

Why didn't this win...of all the possibilities...of all the great ideas...this didn't get in...
They do look great. But they didn't follow the rules.
Quote: The six views should be clean, uncolored line drawings / illustrations / schematics of the exterior hull of the starship.
Rules like "suitable for inclusion" are vague and subjective, and can adapt over time. I wouldn't have considered the Hurricane "suitable for inclusion" as a Minmatar ship before it came out. Think of it a lot like a resume. When you're applying for a job you may be AWESOME for that job, but your potential employer has to sort through a lot of paper. If you have typos on your front page, or ignore specific requirements (say to include your GPA), then it becomes an easy way to filter yours out of the pile that requires actual reading.
Same thing here. They had a great many submissions, many of them outstanding. Choosing between them gets a lot easier when someone doesn't pay attention to the rules.
Almost all of the griping that people seem to have about the judging not following the rules comes down to the highly subjective rules. But nobody seems to be stepping up on submissions like this one and saying "Yeah, they're gorgeous designs, but he shot himself in the foot."
Well in all honesty he even shot himself in the foot by adding his name on the paper itself which is a nono according to the rules aswell... i didn't really like the designs as they look like heavily modified already existing ships to me but i can understand why people do like them. Because they pretty much look like go betweens carrier and supercarriers.
Next to the name he really didn't make it easy for any 3d artist to make a floorplan box out of the views with the heavy shading on the views themselves. ___________

I thought the judges were going to have a tough job perhaps picking the top 15 out of say - the top 30 - and that there were going to be people all butt_hurt because their favourite didn't get in etc. But 5 or 6 of these wouldn't even make my top 30... (still better than I could do, but a load of pants compared to some of the stunning designs that have been overlooked.) Cant believe that awesome caldari battleship didn't make the cut. I only have to describe it as 'that awesome caldari battleship' and I bet 3/4 of the people that have been even half watching the entries will know which one I mean.
I hope CCP ignore these clown-judges and go for their own choices. Can't believe their in-house artists will be very happy having to implement the flying spaghetti monster, and horizontal hairdryer...

TBH I couldn't care less about what is allowed according to the rules. It is only relevant and important in this competition and it only decides what 1 single ship will be included. As we now know a few of those that made in to the finals are worthy of winning, so what ever happens won't change the fact, that very likely a good looking ship will get added to EVE.
What I really care about is getting more normal ships added to EVE and having them look as amazing as some of the contestants made their ships look. What this competition has shown to me is, that there are a great many designs out there that would fit EVE very well and that there are still many niches and functions that no ship provides or where more ships could easily be added. If CCP only has plans for one novelty ship being added to the game, than no matter who the winner is I will be disapointed in the end.
CCP always tells how long it takes for ships to be added to the game, but still they waste their precious time adding useless gift ships, that just waste the little resources that seem to go to adding new ships to the game. Making the latest gift ship in to an actual ship and a salvaging ship to boot was fantastic. These kinds of additions are what I wish to see when new ships are brought to the game and I hope similar futures for many of the entries of this competition, regardless if their entries violated the rules of the competition or not. All that matters to me is that they were amazing designs and we should not let them go ignored because of minor technicalities.

Ok. Then why this don't make to semifinal? There is no colored certain pieces - just tone for all ship projection (and all lines are clearly visible).

I completely agree, the aquilon is the best one out there, no offense to other people who submitted entries, there are very great stuff in there, but I simly love the look and feel of the aquilon. It as everything, it's unarguably gallente, it has a distinct feel to it, and it looks plain cool. Why this didn't make it to the semi-finals is beyond me, for I can see no rule violation. And even if there is one it has to be so very small no one cares.

Gotta be said, ALOT of the designs are truly gorgeous but I do feel alot of the better entries didn't make it in.
I think the raw talent for this sort of design is beyond belief I'm honestly amazed at the detail your all winners in my book.
With that said some who didnt make it in really should ahve got in because some of those who were denied were robbed.

TBH, I like the semifinalists. After all, picking the ones you like it's a matter of subjectivity. But it's really a shame that so few entries had to be chosen from so many gorgeous designs. I think I saw enough ships to replace many of the once great but now old starship designs from EVE.

I am one small player of a game I love. My words on this post have been to protect those artist and players to whom worked with such diligence effort and concern, for something they loved.
Many of you put yourselves out there and like me realized too late, your entries didn't make the cut from a rules perspective, for whatever nuanced reasons. We must bow out graciously and congratulate the winners, but only in so much as we accept a righteous group of winners, WHO did follow the rules AND meet the spirit of this contest, AND did provide a fabulous piece.
I submit that we have not received the fair attention to detail we expected here by the judges, I am no bully, but I will not let them roll us and allow us to be bullied without a fight. I don't want to win, I want the right entries to win, entries that adhered to the rules, met the spirit of the challenge, *and are beautiful all at the same time. Those are the right semifinalist, not the quick and dirty, lazy mastication of ,passionless careless judgment we have had thus far. Correct the RULES violations, you can then argue the subjectivity of the good and bad art all you want.

Maybe the judges just didn't like it? I'm not "whitening" anything (except my teeth, which sadly doesn't work as well as I would hope). Someone asked why the escort carriers didn't make it forward, and it was an easy answer - they broke the rules. Not everything is going to be so cut and dried.
Art is subjective. Personally, I think the Aquilon is just ugly. You seem to like the Serval too, which I disliked. I do think I would have voted for the Precursor, and liked the Tornado from the start. But that's my opinion, which almost by definition will differ from yours or that of the judges.
The judges having different taste in ships than you do does not make them stupid, lazy, or greedy. Art is not rational. It's very, very personal, and very, very hard to quantify. The only irrational thing in this whole mess is the bunch of rampaging geeks who can't accept anyone having a difference other than their own.

Can we argue the rules and the implications of the fact they are being ignored ? If they placed legit entries up there it would be fine... as it stands several of the entries, have colored line drawings... They need to be replaced with people who followed the rules.

The whole project seems like a great way to reach out to an artistic community within and outside EVE especially with Incarna on the horizon. At first I thought people may just be complaining since their personal favourite was not included... then I looked at the selections.
http://news.deviantart.com/article/133308/?offset=10#comments
This comment on the DA page might explain the apparently poor selection by the judges.
Quote: ~knightd427 ... There's only one selection from the entire month of September in the top 15. Eleven are between October 10th-13th, six of which are from the final day of the contest. More evidence they did a rush job judging and didn't look at earlier submissions. They most likely flipped through 3 or 4 pages of thumbnails and made a quick choice so they could get back to feeling like they were doing something important. You'd have a better statistical chance of winning the lottery than to have all the truly best works submitted so close together.
Disclosure : I don't have an entry
Some extremely well done, rule abiding submissions have been overlooked. I'd suggest voting but history has shown EVE players aren't good at anything resembling democracy. Maybe the competition finalists could be reselected/shortlisted by CCP/art department if they don't mind the extra effort of actually looking at the entries.
Obviously DeviantArt can't be arsed
Though I'm not sure how CCP can do this without it being apparent that they agree with the above sentiment / breaking some sort of contractual agreement. I hope they have the moral fiber/balls of steel do it anyway.
tl:dr Great idea, well marketed - let down by disinterested judges - please rejudge. |

I can look at two paintings and assess technical ability, I can decide, objectively, if a presentation is creative, and provided I have a decent awareness of past and current trends in design I can tell you whether a work is original. When you have assembled many pieces of a similar quality then it would become a matter of taste.
The expectation was that the fifteen finalists would be of the highest quality, there are certainly plenty of excellent designs to choose from. What we got was a very odd selection which no one can seem to explain or justify given the criteria specified in the rules.
Perhaps if these decisions could be understood, people wouldn't be so almightily ****ed. -

OMG, You loose the point - look at first selections of semifinalists - there is no way aquilon or tornado(for example) could not beat LA-battlecruiser (if not rules) from the scratch, disregarding it's ugliness or other personal feelings. So seeing through rules don't give us any clue why jury voted in such bizarre way. And yes: as long as gradient or shadow don't overshadow base lines - they are acceptable. Not everyone has graphic mainframe in brain - many may need hints for proper projection-understanding leading to full view of author's vision. It is viewer-friendly presentation not rule violation.

I would argue that originality is subjective.
But the LA battlecruiser was not original by anyone standards, was not presented creatively. Plus the views didn't match up, as the ships turns to the side it somehow became thicker O.o
and Technical Artistic Skill.. well it was a box. The Technical Artistic Skill was suppose to be based on the 6 views not on the painted up version. but even then....
