Edited by: CCP Loktofeit on 09/12/2010 15:28:42 The stats of the Echelon are fairly equal to an average T1 frigate, except that it can only fit one module and no rigs. The module itself is similar to a T1 codebreaker, except it has twice the range and an eight-second cycle time.

All the excitement about the 2nd xmas gift and it's.... a frigate.
Still, at least it's better than the 1st gift and has a consistent theme... a frigate I'll never use and learning skills I'll never be able to use again.

We could be all missing something...
It could have a few million hitpoints, or 99% omni-resists, or anything even remotely useful.
Or, it could be a sub-par T1 frigate with 1 module slot for hacking without the ability to fit probes, tank, weapons, propulsion or anything else that goes WITH hacking.
To be fair, lets call it a shuttle with a module slot because no-one will use it for anything else...

"waahh waahhh waahhh i wanted X!"
If you don't like it, contract it to me.
With CCP's new(?) aim of incorporating the Chronicles into an actual part of the EVE universe, im wondering how many people here have completely bypassed the possibility that this ship *could* play an integral role in the future of the game. Sure, the Zeyphyr was nice, and the SOCT shuttle was nice, but they did nothing really to make people consider using them in a tactical manner. The Zephyr was a nice start (probe usage, sleepers ignore it, remember?), im keeping my fingers crossed that the Echelon will become something handy, that you will WANT to have one in your fleet, even if its just for bullying Sansha.
Having said that, i hope CCP dont go too far and require its use.

Of course, it's like when you were 8. And your parents have been telling you how good you were throughout the year, you score high 90's in your school tests, and get your spellings right for a grade A+. Your parents tell you they're going to get you something amazing for christmas. You've always been hoping for that Gameboy with Mario brothers.
The gift arrived, and is placed under the christmas tree. It's a smallish box sized, so it seems likely to be a gameboy. 25th arrives, and you run down the stairs to open that gift.
You feel the delight about to explode in your mind. Wrappers gone, box is upside down.
You got a pair of mittens for Christmas.

its not that we are ungreatful, its just the removal of the learning skills and reimburstment on their investment in spendable SP was just so damned freaking awesome they just shouldnt have even mentioned a second "half" of a present because a stupid frig that 90% of eve wont touch is not equal to half of somthing else so damned amazing.
should have just sed nothing and realsed it on the day as an actual supprise.

Yes, it's free. Yes, it's crap. But... CCP spent TIME designing and implimenting the ruddy thing. Time that could have been used on one of the thousand things that we actually suggested would improve the game for a lot of people. I'm not complaining that what I got was crap, I'm complaining that what they spent time on resulted in something 99% likely to be totally useless. I doubt anyone will use this for hacking, they will use a cov-ops or whatever they used before, because it can fit more than 1 module...

Well tbh I didn't expect a lot as we already had the learning skills removed, everything else would have been obscured by that great present anyway. So no, not disappointed at all. Yes a remake of the Moa would have been better but you just can't have it all! I hope the Purloined Sansha Codebreaker will have t2 stats so I won't have to train Hacking V!!

Yes, i understand that.
But you're confusing a *free gift* with *game-altering changes to the core of EVE Online*, which belongs on the Features & Ideas board. The time involved on creating and implementing this new ship will be minimal compared to the time involved in changing, testing, rechanging, retesting and implementing a game-changing feature.
Yes, many will probably still use a cov-ops frig for hacking, but i believe that it would be downright stupid of anyone to start comparing the Echelon to anything until we actually have our pods inside one to sit and play around with. You don't have a clue as to what the Echelon will actually be like until then, so how's about leaving comparisons until after that point?
An awful lot of people in here seem to be conveniently forgetting about the mindblowing usefulness of the Noctis too, considering much of the community spent a long long time badgering CCP to include a dedicated salvaging ship. Do you "smart" people even know that those who designed this ship are a whole other group of people than those who work on bugs?
They didn't take any manpower away from bughunting to make and implement this ship.
Yes you got a free ship and yes it might not be the ultimate wtfpwn mobile you wanted. There is no reason for CCP to put an I-Win button on a ship and then give the ship away for free.
Heck, CCP should just quit giving free stuff cause the majority of the whiners has a mouth big enough to rotate a Titan in and still have room for more. No matter what you stuff into it they will keep yapping for more.

No.
Thank you for your insightful insight.
What I conclude from this is that there is a department of CCP staff with nothing better to do that roll out useless items. I'm not suggesting that the people who made this are the people who fix bugs. I'm suggesting that man hours were taken up to do this, and that if those man hours were allocated to people who give nothing to the game then perhaps they would be better invested in people who CAN fix things.
I've read many of your posts and agreed/disagreed according to my own views, but the one constant is that the discussions tend to go on forever with no-one changing views so shall we say 'we disagree with each other' and not turn this into a massive back and forth? Forum PvP is so CAOD ;)

When they presented the T3s, the design for the 5th subsystem was already in the matrix, and the stat design for this ship comes down to "copy → paste". They new module would have required more work than the ship in that regardà so yeah, that's a coffee break gone.
Originally by: Phaedriel I'm suggesting that man hours were taken up to do this, and that if those man hours were allocated to people who give nothing to the game then perhaps they would be better invested in people who CAN fix things.
Again, no. They have to keep those people around for when something in line with their skills is added ù if they were simply replaced by people with different skill sets whenever there was a lull in their work load, they would simply stop showing up and CCP would soon find it impossible to draw that kind of talent. So we'd simply stop getting anything new. Ever.
Oh, and they do give something to the game: this frigate, for instance. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

It'd be nice if a regular version of this is available at some point in the future, which lets us fit multiple T2 hacking modules (and analysers?) with appropriate bonuses.

Removing the learning skills was a fantastic decision.
This? I suppose if you are into hacking (or whatever the hell it's for) this could be really nice, but I am not.
For the record, for anyone else wondering what to give me for the holidays, I am also not "into" figure skating, Hannah Montana, Twilight, or Justin Beeber -- so gifts relating to any of the above would be a poor choice.
In my mind this is like gifting a wife who has never shot a gun in her life a brand new 300 magnum deer rifle. Surprise honey! I know you said you don't like guns, but here's one anyway! Aint she a beaut! This thing'll knock down an elephant! Why are you crying?

Alternative viewpoint...
This free item is designed to be totally useless and therefore sit in hangers forever. It's use therefore is hidden and is actually there to create EXTRA load on the database and servers so that CCP can monitor how adding utter junk to hangers affects performance.
Either that or... tinfoil hat... they're all rigged with explosives and at the middle of new year celebrations they will all explode destroying whatever they are in a hanger with, reducing hanger clutter and server load... and making pretty fireworks.
There, I just came up with 2 more useless purposes that CCP could for this pile of crud.

Now go back on complaining about how ugly it is. Or learning skills. Those were received way too good to spend time trolling on threads as these.

This thread confuses me. What I'm getting out of it is that a lot of people think CCP uses the same people to design ships, code ships, test ships, fix bugs, run for donuts, get the oil changed in the company vehicles, etc.
Maybe I should apply at CCP, they seem to have a serious shortage of employees...

Well, it's what we usually get, a ship that is pretty much only good as a collector's item.
The thing is though, I got let down because corpchat was raging about "WE'RE GETTING A CONCORD FRIGATE FOR CHISTMAS!" and I got excited.
Thoughts of running around in this during christmas break, busting criminals in low sec....
But it's a codebreaking ship that most likely has no use in combat whatsoever...

But it's not symmetry that he wants. He is commenting about acceptable asymmetry. As in, making a ship which is not symmetrical but still looks nice/acceptable. Examples being the Mach (mostly symmetrical but it has that engine looking thing on one side), Kessie, Thorax etc which are not symmetrical but still look good.

One of the events showed that one of Concord officers was on the take, on sanshas payroll as it were, and spreading false info, was caught and dismissed. Now we get a free Concord ship that will help defeat the Sansha horde...... Yeah right
Just ignore those Sansha implants there

I'm hoping a real ship eventually uses this ship model, as I quite like the model. (hated apoth and zephyr models).
So, this 'gift' is really only worthwhile as a harbinger of things to come.
As a frigate with one module slot that cannot be rebuilt if lost, it's completely useless and relegated to hanger adornment.

Unless, the odds are better at codebreaking for specific sansha incursion sites, like the description of the ship clearly states it,at least compared to currently available modules....Shocking i know...

I wonder if this this will be ignored by Incursion NPCs. It has no resistances and would easily be one-shotted so I assume it has some special undocumented feature/bug.

I'll tell you what this ship needs... a built in cloak. No module.... just the generic ability to cloak. That would make it useful for something...
still... I like it. The ship looks cool. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the gift ship. It could just as easily been another snowball launcher and some snowballs that don't fit in a station freezer. I like taking my Christmas victory lap in a new ship... just for the hell of it. For everything else there's the Nighthawk and the Onyx. If CCP isn't giving away a command interdictor, than I already have what I need for most of my other operations. Thanks for the ship, CCP!

I see it as a free hangar ornament. It's nice, but I'll probably never use it.
That said, I also wonder if it's a hint from CCP. After all, the news articles have mentioned a *lot* of electronics systems, information networks, etc, and now we're getting a ship with a codebreaker... Maybe Hacking will play some sort of role in the incursions in the future?

The thing to remember here is that CCP isn't just one group of people -- it's an organization with many areas, including art, bugfixing, server maintenance, etc.
They can't just instantly restructure the organization to redirect efforts to the particular area that happens to be the hot issue of the week. So if they let the art developers work on a neat new frigate so we can get a christmas present, that's really not a bad choice -- those guys aren't going to be able to solve any lag problems anyway, and the model might prove useful in the future for something else.
While I am unlikely to ever fly the ship, I welcome the present as a charming ornament that might decorate my station in Incarna -- or perhaps for something even better, like the Noctis.
Thank you, CCP. It is a charming model, and I'm quite fond of it.

Why would that matter if everyone gets one?
Because "everyone having one" is not a factor in balancing and because, pretty soon, everyone will not have one.
Anything that has any kind of mainstream value, should be produced by players or, if given as a gift, be very very very very rare (so the value in having it is far higher than the value in using it). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Honestly yes I am disappointed, not in the new ship particularly, I could give a rats a** less about the new ornament. The main issue with me is the man hours wasted on just that , an ornament. This happens while the poor Ishkur has had a lazy turret mount on the lower port winglet forever (even before graphics revamp if I remember)not to mention the textureless look of the hurricanes rear engine cluster. Yes I have read the posts here that ship designers/modelers could not have fixed actual bugs, but what about actually fixing the ships that have something glaringly wrong instead of making us a cheap dollar store toy filled with lead and cadmium. |

I'm quite happy with it.
Modelling etc: It wouldn't suprise me if there was a stash of various flavour ship models somewhere that can be completed quickly for implementation. balancing: none required. any other new ship/subsystem requires balancing. Granted, maybe some art time could have been spent fixing the texture on another ship, but if they're redoing the whole model from scratch in the (ahem) near future, then why bother?
What I would love is if the blueprints for the gift ships became available a year or so after the initial release. Either BPOs on market, or preferably BPCs through some loyalty stores(Interbus?) or loot drops.

I think the Echelon looks pretty cool. I like it for the same reason I like the Zephyr-- the design. Also, part of what makes the Zephyr so cool is it's description and the idea behind its design (the solar sail). The Echelon also has a look unique from any other ship in EVE, and hopefully it too has a cool back story. Guess I'm just repeating myself now, but these free ships give great new ways for RPers to enjoy the game. --- It's a dream paradox...

Apparently folks need some Game Business 101...
#1 You release one-of-a-kind, never to be reproduced ship with a semblance of utility. The utility is to get people to fly it...and lose it...thus increasing the value of the ship and adding to the collection of "Ships that are Cool Because You Don't Have One."
#2 Said ship is so cool that you only make it available a short period of time.
#3 Players renew alternate (or all if on holiday break from EVE) to get rare, never to be reproduced ship. One month will be paid on various accounts that don't actually need to be renewed in order to get ship (or multiples of ship).
#4 CCP makes the most money from a single-month subscription fee for each account renewed simply for a new ship. Those who pay attention will notice you save more money for more months bought in advance.
#5 Players go "Oh goody, cool ship" every now and then, Potential Players go "Wow, they give cool stuff and free expansions! /subscribe", CCP gets extra cash-flow, and the wheel of game business keeps on turning. Rinse, Repeat as needed.
I like getting nifty ships...they sort of act as a history-book in my hangar for cool, and not so cool, moments in my EVE career. Seriously folks, you're getting an expansion (for free, unlike other games?) that is in three parts because it packs so many features (and fixes! Yay Rockets!) such as the brand new character creator (Can we say Incarna around the Corner?). Cease whining. If you want an actual 'usable' ship (like the Noctis, but combat wise) get into the F&I or AH forums and come up with something!!!

Just to reiterate a common sentiment - I hope it gets the Primae -> Noctis treatment. I hate to see working models unused save for one-off ships that, by and large, stay in the hangar.
Incursions is said to open up the CONCORD loyalty point store, though, so I'm fairly optimistic that we'll see another Noctis type re-release.

That doesn't explain however why the Echelon cannot have a usable slot layout. For its intended role as a exploration vessel it must have at least 3 mids (prop mod, analyzer, hacker) and at least 1 high (probe launcher/salvager). Also, a role bonus to scanner probe strength and/or hacker/analyzer strength would be appreciated. This way it would have some real value and many more people would resub for it, so CCP would get more money. I don't see the problem there, is it because it would inject too much ISK into the economy if the ship would be worth a lot?

There are some models out there which are in dare need of some fixes.. I don't know if CCP will ever implement their small-fixes program, which should come out of all this SCRUM, but the last thing in this regard from the art-team was the Scorpion. By now we should be running around with new Dominix, Armageddon and Typhoon if SCRUM was working.
