Yeah, the preview needs to include all the different thumbnail sizes. What's fine in 512 might look real strange when scaled down.

Edited by: Diomedes Calypso on 20/01/2011 00:25:21 Super!, all of the information is good news and really reasassuring.
It will produce better results and make the potentially great new toy a lot more fun.
Your commitment to allow us to attack it all again when the rest of your planned features are released is maybe the most important . We'll know after the beta period is over we'll be able to do the best we can with the full fledged creator that i'm sure will find ways to meet player concerns.
I'm hoping that at that time in a few months, they'll be some choices of skin color and eye shape in a few of the bloodlines that will help use achieve closer to the ethnic appearance of our prior characters in the same lines and also allow more accurate depications of most of the peoples of the world. Now that you the characters have moved mostly to real world replicas of human beings from being a rag tag collection of cartoons with a few alien features, a different level of inclusiveness is called for.
Very good news indeed... now off to have fun with the new toy with far less trepidation!
Cheers!

Can you please comment on the following:
Will said update (tattoos, piercings et al., including, hopefully, a lot more hairstyle, clothing and colour options) be available before the end of the grace period?
Are you planning said extended customisation options to require micro-transactions?
Is there anything that opposes the option of choosing different portraits for every portrait size?
Thanks.

I too look foward to all the little accesories and additions beyond glasses. Hopefully we can get some nice scarring, some non-sunglass glasses, maybe the return of the headset I know my old character had.
Can't wait for the new customization options. I already spent a couple hours just tweaking my alts. Still tentative on my main so I appreciate the Grace Period.

Edited by: Brain Boy on 20/01/2011 01:46:09 This is good news, letting us redesign when the product has aged a bit. I'm sure that it'll help with the diversity problem, rather with the lack of diversity.
Towards that end please please please pretty please, with a long limbed roe on top, can we have skeletal deformations to play with? Having everyones meaty bits pasted on the same frame is really making the otherwise great job you did look far less impressive.

You know, I really, really dislike your use of "re-customize"... when it really means "re-create from scratch". You failed to give us any method of exporting/importing any customisations, and I have a nagging feeling the "recustomization" we'll get will NOT load our previous character as default... also, there's no "reset to default" button. And don't even get me started on the fact you just can't see where in the pool of possible choices you currently are (the total absence of sliders is ridiculous), plus it's really hard at times to "grasp" the proper place on the face when the avatar keeps fidgeting about.
I did not really think EVE could get even less usable UI-wise, but the new portrait generator takes the cake. _

Does anyone know if the incoming tattoos, scars and piercings are going to cost real-life money like portrait changes do? And will the "ability to repeatedly recustomize characters in a future release" cost real-life money also, or just isk in-game?
I sure hope they go the isk route, but I find it hard to believe that after all these years of charging money to redo avatars, CCP is just going to give this stuff away in-game for isk....

Yeah. The lazy eye has to do with the fact that you're character is constantly fidgeting. This is, in itself, a cool feature: makes it life-like (the Mass Effect in-game character menu screen does this too). It's not such a useful feature when actually crafting your character, though. In my case I wound up with clipping errors in my hair (like the lazy eye, because of the unfortunate timing of the snapshot). While we're comparing, the Mass Effect in-game character creator has your character be perfectly still during creation, as it should be.
Originally by: Euphoriiia Perhaps before you do this, you should make sure everyone can get into the creator? I still get stuck at 'entering character creator'...
You need to get a real video card. I have a modest nVidia GTX 285, and it works flawlessly. Wasn't there an issue with needing 3.0 shaders, for example? Updating your drivers might be a good idea, too. --

Originally by: Lady Naween It would be nice if we could also see what the avatar will look like in the smaller portraits, my alt (this one) looked great in the large fullscreen but the tiny icon in say chat and local looks messy since the background and the hair melds together poorly.
THIS! ^^ Several backgrounds only look good in the big version and the small avatar thumbnail for the channel lists of the forums looks screwed as the contrast isn't high enough.. The same with the zoom function.. some people zoom so far out to see boobies or some pose that you can't recognise them on the small thumbnails. Please give: - More bright backgrounds - Small thumbnail preview like it is on the forums/channels with ANTIALISING - I have to choose BRIGHT EYE colors (white/blue and white/green) just because the dark stuff isn't visible and makes the avatar in the thumbnail loose his eyes >>> give option to accentuate eyes by increasing their brightness in the thumbnails support Public Idea Tracker | 24hr PLEX |

Edited by: Killajoules on 20/01/2011 05:42:24 Although I myself am happy with my portrait, I support the redo that CCP is allowing. I myself had plenty of time to mess around with the creator in Sisi and can confirm that I actully messed up my portrait in there, so I took caution while using it live.
Not everyone has the time (nor should have to) for what I did and with such a radical change, the point that CCP came around to understand allowing a 2nd chance and making UI imrpovements is good. Just don't get frustrated with your customers, their view points are valid as it would seem you understand now (@CCP)
As for everyone else Emo-Raging about the features, changes, fixes, gameplay altering nerfs ect. stfu and htfu. You're not the only one that plays this game, and go cry to someone else about how you had to alter your combat style to be successful. Theres a million other ways to pvp, try some.
And anyone emo-raging about CCP's late response, oversights, ect. Grow-up too, nobody's perfect. They're more transparent (now anyways) than most other MMO's. The point of the fact is they corrected their mistakes, what more could you ask for? (do you want it on a silver plater too?)
The only thing tbh CCP has upset me with in the past is the whole BOB thing, and I pray they learned from their mistakes and will stay out of the IT conflict. (Literally and figuratively)
TL:DR, grow up: play the game and like it or leave. No-one is forcing you to play it.
---
P.S. +1 to Please add viewing of all 3 portrait aspects (chat, forum, and char selection) when asking about finalization. It is the chat icon I have found myself most dissapointed in upon entering game with a new char.

I could get behind that. Give us a "mathematician's / modeller's view" toggle that pops down a list of all the xy (or just x, in some cases) sliders a la Poser.
It might be a bit much to get in for this quick-fix patch, but definitely for future iterations (along with a xml export of said values ù hey presto, new oog-market for ready-made sculpts). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I disagree. My character portrait looked just fine on the preview but the small icon looked awful. The Character Creator should display all those different render sizes so I can verify that all those versions look fine.

Edited by: Linda Duane on 20/01/2011 06:55:46 +1 for the Devblog. Got to adjust the eyes on this one. It looks like I'm looking slightly downwards.
Btw, what happened to the customisation of eye-ball sizes?
Btw2, what happened to the more powerful customisation options in the photobooth regarding expressions. I tried time and time again to get some smiling or a smirk, but it just doesn't work. Is this intentional to make those pictures look like passport pictures? If so, then please state this.
PS: my hair was longer in the char creator (left side on picture, actually nearly till the shoulders) than it is in the server rendered picture. Any solution to this?! And the server includes antialising, where as the client doesn't do this for the preview.. THAT SUCKS!!!!

See this post http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1451716. This is what you see if you click on the link at the EVE login screen. maybe you forgot to read that one. It says "If you are not happy with the character portrait that you have made for your character, do not despair. In the next few days we are going to give everyone who has already customized their character at that time one re-customization for use during the grace period. This will allow you to restart the character portrait creation process with your current character portrait as the starting point. Please be aware that once you have saved your character portrait it will be final until we introduce in-game re-customization in a future release."
