Having said that the ONLY choice available is the solid background gradients at the very end.
The rest of the backgrounds are USELESS and whoever did them at CCP doesn't understand portraits or depth of field. You never want a busy background because it will distract you from the subject and the foreground.
I don't know anything about portrait photography, but I know what I like, and I hate the single-color backgrounds. Most portrait backgrounds I know of, from my step-daughter's school pictures, for example, have some texture to them. The computer-rendered perfect gradients are just too... perfect. They add an artificial quality to the photos.
Originally by: cyndrogen Also the rule of thirds applies to your avatar, don't just take a picture dead smack in the center, try to offset a bit and pose the shoulders and head opposite of one another to form more interesting lines.
This, though, I absolutely agree with. :) I always wondered why photographers, when I was growing up, always had me craning my neck in seemingly unnatural directions, but as unnatural as it feels, the results are usually much more appealing...
But all this is personal preference, to be fair. I read earlier on, "don't use dark lipstick on light complexion with light hair" -- but it works for me. And so does a detailed background. So, in the end, the only rule about avatar portraits is -- there are no rules! :)

You tell em sister, there are no rules........well, maybe just 1 rule. Take your time and don't rush it, OK?

I'm trying to tweak mine a little, i don't like that the eyes seem invisible and that he is centered on the screen, but i haven't had any luck so far. Changing the lighting makes the jawline took way too angular and i can't get the shadows that i want without obscuring the eyes. Any tips?

A few tips I found handy:
- I also think it is handy to leave the avatar bald while sculting, so nothing gets obscured by hair while your at it, however I choose the eyebrows first cause they tend to change a lot of the general appearance and in my opinion each eyebrow texture needs it's "own" sculting of the forehead to look really good.
- on makeup: luckily I have a girlfriend who is quite good at applying makeup and there a a few rules: - less is more (doesn't necessarily apply if you go for a certain look) - don't go too wild with crazy colors, there's not many girls who can pull it off in rl and chances are your avatar can't, either - rouge on the cheeks is applied to enhance or dimish features of the face, for example a girl with very wide cheekbones would apply it a little under the bones to make her face look less triangular (there's only two different placement options for this atm, however maybe ccp will add more down the line)
-closeup shots stand out more and are much more recognizable
-show some emotion in your shot, however be careful with smiles so you don't end up looking like a grinning halfwit
-shadows in the face make a more interesting picture
-be careful when choosing backgrounds, so they actually fit the lighting on your face somewhat, they old character creator was more forgiving in this respect, cause lighting applied to the backgrounds as well. Let's hope CCP will bring this functionality back

I thought my original pic was ok till someone pointed out that Gallente Gallente males all ended up looking like George Micheal if you're not careful-very glad I changed it & am very happy with the result-if you try to think like a photographer-its painting with light-helps you create the ambience & mood-seen some fantastic avatars on here & unfortunately some epic fails too-be expressive-we're not plastic dolls! The right light & background can make a huge difference!

Less is more if you want a natural look-However if you want, as in my case, to express my inner punkette-more is also definatly more! lol I also agree that hair should be the last thing you look at-its a distraction, then take as many pics as poss, till you're happy

Well your eyes are narrow, and probably deep in the face, wich means that you wil have to turn your face straight into a light. Try moving around the head in all the different lightings. Its realy hard to get the lightning exactly right. I spent about 2 hours fiddling around with light and poses, and once i had this one, i couldn't get it back after i changed it. So i ran with this one, but im happy with it.

I'd say, use the random generator (a lot), and then go from one of the characters you like. It's much easier to fine-tune an assembled toon than to create one from scratch.
Hair, unline stated in one of the earlier posts, is a major thing (for a girl). It totally changes your entire look. It's one of the first things I play with; may not be final, but it will give me a great general idea as to where I want to go with my character. --

You can actually grab the eyes and move them more outwards if you first turn the head sideways... I wish I had known that when I made this portrait.

Originally by: Jaizak Aripaik Two tips for a winning smile:
1. Smiles are rarely symmetrical, and they often look more intriguing when they're more asymmetrical. Try raising one corner of the mouth more than the other.
2. When you smile, your cheek pushes up a bit and takes your lower lid with it. These effects are more pronounced the bigger, or more "genuine" your smile is.

I would like to add to this: that the chin and jaw also move towards the smile side.

Long thread so don't know if this has already been mentioned, but faces are rarely symmetrical - generally an idea to slightly tweak the eyelids, eyefolds, eyebrows, etc., to give a bit of assymetry. If you look at pictures of real people and cover each half of the face alternately, the difference in the sides of the face can be quite striking at times (e.g. one half looks "happy", the other "sad"). *****

Agree both tips. Randomize until you see something you like, then set the hair. Hair may frame the face and change the head's shape and proportions, at least for girls. Hairdo and hair color will change how young the character looks, and how trendy or grungy it is. Use it for expression to... some hairdos will conceal the eyebrows, which is both a challenge and a good thing expression-like.
Bear in mind: hair is one of women's most prominent features. It can't be left for a last thought.

- Males should avoid rogue on their cheeks unless it is intentional. It makes them blush, as if they have been caught by their boss for doing something wrong or having had a few drinks too much. Especially the older the faces should have less of it.
- Old people tend to have bigger noses and ears. I believe it is because of the cartilage that keeps growing with age. Give your old faces some proper noses and ears, and reduce them on younger faces. |

Edited by: Iris Saavedra on 23/01/2011 21:24:10 I do wish I'd read this topic before designing my characters. You guys have a lot of great advice, and a lot of great pictures to back it up. I'm using evefaces.com to look through my old/new comparisons, and I can definitely see where I went wrong and where the tips in this thread would come out. Old/New Portraits Iris is especially difficult to recreate, I think, since they don't have her dress or hairstyle anymore. I'm more or less happy with the expression she came out with (she strikes me as more analytical now than the shrewdness of her old photo), but I think her facial structure doesn't quite work, and the lighting might not play to it. Another one of my alts definitely didn't turn out well, with her serious man-jaw. :P
According to the dev-blog, I have one redesign to play with during the grace period. What do you guys recommend?
PS - Whitehound, Tres Farmer, Sophia Amelia Stone, you guys definitely have standout avatars. Very well done! Bolivia looks like a Playboy model I knew. :P |

I wish I new how Whitehound got his character to look so old!
I am extremely disappointed with the change. I LIKED my old characters. I am quite unhappy with the way they look now.
The choices for everything are extremely limited. The only choice a guy has if he wants long hair is dreads?!? Are you sh***ng me?!? All the clothing is lame. Skin color is shades of caucasian? AAArgh!

Good stuff in this post. I discovered that I liked the profile look better entirely on accident. Try all the poses and rotate and zoom a lot. Others have noted the importance of lighting (and darkness). What surprised me the most was how important the color of the light was as well.
Some really good portraits in the thread too.
