Yeah, it is of course possible that people could submit guys. And although Chribba might be a man-babe, that's not the point of the site, so we'll weed them out of the competition as we spot them. In the mean-time, lets see how well Chribba does :)

Once you submit your babe in the submission box below the pictures, it should say "success", and she will be added. If she's already in it will say "already got that one", which it did when I tried to add you. So Skree is there, don't panic

Oh and the site is in beta so further features will come. Most importantly, we will have a loser board as well as a leader board, and the lowest ranked pictures will be cleared off weekly. There will also be a babe of the week winner each week etc.

The randomizer is pretty broken, out of 1100 portraits it is the same 100 you will get. Have seen some over 7-8 times now. Yes the site is pretty addictive.
As has been noted above, a neiter button would be nice that would give -0.5 to both.
Also to be able to search for chars to see the current votes would be neat.

by the way some faces i've seen have like a 100+ votes and another face have like 10 and they both entered at about the same date, which makes me think your algorithm is completely random and match 1 vs the x others one time each without considering that all faces should have an equivalent number of votes.
and oh by the way... prune all those male faces !
and one more thing, once you get 100 negative vote just get it out of the rotation...

the Voting seems skewed because you don't know what yes votes are being compared to. This should be more like an average rating system...
vote 1-10 for each picture. then an average score presented.

The gender of a character isn't currently part of the publicly available API information we can access, so we can't pre-screen guys at the moment. What we're working on tonight is a way of reporting guys which we can moderate so that it won't be abused to eliminate genuine competition. So if people want to continue being silly and submitting guys, we can't stop that right now; by tomorrow, we should be able to remove them through reporting though.
Since there seems to be such a massive interest in rating guys against each other, we'll seriously consider a hottest guy in new eden page too. Just have to get this one working first.
And the voting system is based on elo rankings, so that the level of competitor the babe wins or loses against is factored in to change her standings on the leader board, like in chess. So it's not just the number of wins but the quality that count.

Awesome site. Not surprised it crashed eventually...
I must say that having a "both lose" button or similar would kindof take away from part of the fun of the site.I like the fact that sometimes I have to choose between two hot babes and sometimes I have to choose between two very un-babe-ish "babes". Makes things fun.

In case someone hasn't had a look at the site, anyone can add anyone by name. Removal of characters does not appear to be possible, however the chance of a portrait showing up isn't very high if the total amount of portraits climbs to thousands.
A few features that might be worth considering:
- Leader/loserboards possible to show all or filter by race
- Possibility for the owner of a character to remove/blacklist the character
- Possibly vote history or previous vote left shown for the duration of the next vote?
- You might want to remove the names from being shown and show only pictures. Then reveal the character name with the result. This might avoid a small bit of popularity contests ("I don't like that player, so I downvote him always.").
- Search of character statistics by name.
Authentication might be a bit tricky for the "please remove me" option, but could possibly be done by parsing mail via the API. (For example, send an Evemail with the title of "REMOVE ME" to a specific alt with the character you want to be removed.)
I do also remember a similar site for the old avatars, I think there you could only add yourself via IGB, and it used IGB functions for bare-bones identification etc. (Of course, this isn't strong identification.)

I didn't design this char for a beauty pageant! I was trying to get across some expression & personality-but then I'm a real girl lol! Most of 'em are so obviously designed by blokes who prefer underage Manga rejects with boobs for brains! what I found staggering, as it showed the numbers of wins/losses for each pic after voting, was how low the votes for any dark skinned characters were... My curly haired, latina self was a bit offended. but at least the eve boys I hang out with aren't disturbed by the color of my skin, or that of my toon. ;)

As per patch notes ( Users can no longer proceed to the Portrait screen without equipping a shirt beforehand.) you should not only remove men from the listing but also women not wearing a shirt

seriously. My toon is not wearing a shirt. not that you can tell... lol. ;)
of course I didn't make her boobs so big they were popping out of the bra, or take a portrait with them hanging out... and the bra really looks like a tube top with a jacket over it... maybe they could just adjust the coverage the bra makes, so it covers the boobs regardless of size. All my larger breasted friends buy larger clothes... well. not all of 'em... most of 'em. ;)
oh and what patch was this? becuase I edited saung after the patch. lol. is it an upcoming patch?

Edit: You should also be picking up a lot less guys in the mix, I've got some filtering in place. Unfortunately, the EVE API doesn't allow me to determine gender (it's not actually visible in-game either when you click on a player's profile) so we'll still get the odd guy here and there but I'm working on a "IT'S A MAN!" / "OH GOD MY EYES" button. :)

I notice the lighting appears to be mess up in the final portraits like mine is.
In the designer the lighting makes no discernible difference but looks lousy in final render.

Although, I'd like to add that having to choose between two non-babes doesn't have a real effect on who's winning the competition, since the votes are weighted (see discussion earlier in the thread). But yeah, it's not pleasant on the eyes.

I both abhor and love this.
Although, sometimes I find myself forced to pick the less manly/grotesque looking out of 2. And then there are other times I'm wondering why certain characters have such a high rating.

FYI ima guy irl as well, lol. But ya i tried to keep some personality in there, i just got tired of forhead wrinkles.. The 64x64 makes them really distracting O.o None the less i been voting for the classier ladies, but admittedly bigger lips seem to get my vote, hehe.

Wrong because some people will simply hit reload and skip the choice making the whole ranking system moot (i myself always do that).

Worryingly addictive.
Has anybody else noticed that it seems to group similar images together rather a lot. OP, is that the algorithm or just an artefact of the voting?
Can we get a full league table, I've never seen any my submitted alts, (I this probably to stop voting abuse) so have no idea how they are placed.
To those suggesting we need a neither option, don't be stupid it's not necessary, they will drop to the bottom of the table anyway.

It's probably a problem with your PC/graphics card/graphics settings. The lighting choice makes a huge difference in the portraits. |

Thanks for all the feedback. We'll definitely develop a way to search for your favourite babes and see how they're doing soon. Our immediate priority though is to make sure the system is robust enough that it doesn't get broken again
But it's all looking good at the moment, and is up and running again without major problems. So some of our future plans include:
1. Current secret project to make site more fun for in-game browsing
2. More intelligent way of filtering out men and blank portraits
3. Method of searching for specific babes to check position and stats
4. Possible future ability to create a personal gallery by logging in
5. Future loser-board and clearing of the losers off the server
I'd like to get some feedback from you guys about another issue: would it be better to have a "babe of the day", or a weekly winner? We're thinking of possibly having a competition at the end of each month between the daily winners - so one day of only voting for the top 30 or so. What do you think is the best format for winners?

Type in your name in the box underneath the two portraits you've been given, and press Submit. It'll either say Success, or it'll tell you you're already added.

Every once in a while it seems to hang on "reload". Circles just go round and round. I have to refresh the page to clear it. Anyone else getting that?

Houm, I've clicked 1,000 times (yeah, that's 1,000 matches) and still haven't seen any of my girls, whereas I've seen twice a friend I submitted right after my own babes, and she's on the leaderboard so far. Am I terribly unfortunate, does the web filter IPs so i can't voe my own submissions, or something may be wrong with my babes?

The randomizer seems pretty broken, had the same char show up three times in a row and have had several others show up twice in a row, not something that should be likely to happen with over 3000 portraits to pick from.

You want to see constantly new faces all the time to judge; you get a small deflating feeling when you see one you've already seen (if you will pardon the expression ).

1. It seems like similar "looking" girls are being put head-to-head.
2. Similarly "ranked" girls are being put head-to-head based on their current vote percentage and total votes.
Using this process pushes the leaders up, but there's a problem... My "look" is so vastly different from most of the poses, the first sorting method seems to preclude me form getting put into the mix at all for voting...

There was a really well made portrait up there that was particularly well lighted/made but its no longer in the top.
Much better than Ulvee's but I can't remember the name.

Clearly there's obvious cheating/manipulation going on here. Shame on you. Quit reloading page and waiting till you or your mate's pic turns up and just pick one. This was, I thought, suppose to be a bit of fun, but frankly the entire current leaderboard is a sham and probably needs to be culled or reset. (At least it's not a complete travesty with the fuglies). We are of course assuming it's based on win/loss ratio, but really anything with hundreds of votes with over a 3 to 1 ratio,(in fair few, close to 10 to 1) is a highly suspect result, either that or some people are perpetually fortunate in their competion.
Also there is an obvious bias issue with the randomness of the selections in the first place. Certain characters appear to have an undue prominence in their frequency. There's over three thounsand entries, give some of the others a look in too.
In the interests of full disclosure, the Corp has four entries, all I believe are currently in +ve territory and only one was actually submitted by ourselves. On behalf of the Corp, I'd like to thank those that thought it worthwhile to enter them and to all those whose preference they garnered. A plague on all your houses for those that didn't.

Noted. Looks like some of my server threads are crashing occasionally and getting restarted, which is causing your request to be lost in the Aether. I'm working on a patch for this.

There is a session-based check to ensure that the vote you cast is verified against the choices you were just served.
Also, with most browsers, if you refresh the page without voting, you should see the same match-up again. Of course, you can find ways around this to keep getting new portraits, but it isn't easy to rig votes for one character without automating what we're doing manually on the site right now.
If my logs are to be believed, I've got some guy from Germany trying to crack this problem as we speak :) But, I take it as a kind of a compliment when people try to break the system. I can always take measures to reverse out the changes or reset scores if someone does break things completely.

Nope, the results are sound. The current leaders are the result of hundreds of matches, taking into account each contenders own wins and losses against their respective opponents (Elo rating system).

It's a straight SELECT TOP 2, ORDER BY RAND() query. Purely random. Although, it might actually be better to have a more "random" pseudo random function pulling portraits, to ensure that newer entries get more exposure to get them up to speed.

This site is really good. Its interesting to me how people have different tastes, but overall, when you look at the top rated ones underneath, its hard to argue. I look at them and say, "fair enough". Makes me believe that the results obtained are pretty sound using this "compare 2" method. Of course the pics are very small and some pics look a lot better when bigger.
An option to click then get a slightly bigger pic of the top rated underneath would be nice.

interesting, I've probally looked through more portraits in the last hour than the last 7 years of Eve.
and while I'm impressed with the new Character creator I'm definitely starting to notice the narrow range of variety in racial types CCP allows atm.
Clothing and pose matters alot to this sort of straight up evaluation, more than a few I've seen would be 'hotter' with better poses/lighting, as does name IMO, I have a hard time voting up some of the less unique names, but its interesting to see the changes to old friends and enemies I havent encountered in game yet...
Its a fun minigame you've got here. I'd like to see some win/loss % vs pure numbers reported after voting as I can do them in my head but scanning, calculating both sets before they vanish is more work than I like while drinking..

ps.. definately add searches or loadable rank listing so you can see who is currently ahead/behind..
also a 'report' button would be good.. my be easier than trying to analyze the males/no portraits individually (you can just scan the reports every few days and remove them) as well as helping to weed out the serious uggo's some fools keep entering.

oh and considering ideas and such: could you maybe make some sort of a diagram showing how characters from specific bloodlines compete among each other? maybe showing top 3 for every bloodline for each empire, then top 3 characters for each entire empire and finally top 3 for the whole eve universe - as an addition to the normal leaderboard right now.
i get a feeling that some bloodlines just canot really compete with others by design of the game(brutor women are quite "harsh beauties" for example) and this would help to alleviate this a little bit.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, it is an enjoyable bit of fun and hopefully everyone feels they have a fair chance. Especially in light of the oppertunity to touch up any of the imperfections with the next downtime's do over.
Regarding refresh on the browser holding the existing choice, that simply doesn't work on Explorer, Firefox or the internal Chrome. As suggested, unfortunately it is entirely possible to repeatedly refresh to obtain particular selection. Maybe its cookie related.
I'll beg to differ on the logic of an ELO rating for these purposes, but simply on a normal distribution it's highly suspect that that a win/loss ratio of 5 or 10 to 1 is an expected outcome given sample size. You have the logs and hopefully that would/will shine a light on anything suspicious and time should, even out the some of the questionable voting extremes.
Rand functions, alas, they are never truely random, at best it's pseudo random and at worst it's a progression. The frequency of re-occurances suggests the latter rather than the former, but it's always a tricky thing to get right in code. Even attempting to force a random initial position can actually re-enforce a pattern occurance and it's entirely possible you are hostage to the underlining code.

Okay excellent, so lets run through this. No cookies means that every time you access the page, you'll be handed a new cookie and session ID which you promptly throw away. Unfortunately, this means that when you come back to submit your vote, the site says "who are you?" and you say "I'm someone new", so then your vote gets ignored. :/
So, its catch, either you get what you're handed and vote normally, or you choose to bypass the session by disabling your cookie, but then I can't know who you are, so I assume you're cheating and discard the vote.
As for the NoScript thing, that's fine. I've designed the site around Javascript, but if you don't have it, it will fall back to old-school links without fancy dynamic page loading. (Think gmail vs gmail classic.)

I've got 4 characters looking for me since I was submitted early today... literally hundreds of matches and I've never shown up. I think the random function needs to be more random as I seem to be getting largely the same characters over and over.
Other than that fact - and the need to be able to search for individual stats this pretty wild. I had thought that we'd need a Girls of Eve calendar but this is much better :)

But it's all looking good at the moment, and is up and running again without major problems. So some of our future plans include:

This is my idea, the Pageant should be split up into divisions or phases, such as:
Qualification,
Semi-Finals,
Finals,
Pageant,
let's say you have 3000 Female Portraits.
Qualification:
All 3000 portraits are viewed and voted on only once per client. When a specific portrait receives a specific amount of positive votes, say like 300 or something like that, that portrait is then taken out of rotation and placed into Semi-Finals.
Semi-Finals:
After 300 portraits make it into the semi-finals, you get to vote on just those 300 with the same rules, only 1 vote and viewing per portrait by the client, when the portrait again makes 300 positive votes, it's taken out of rotation and placed into the Finals.
Finals:
Only the top 30 portraits of the 300 semi-finals. The same rules apply to the 30 portraits again, only 1 vote and viewing per client. When a portrait receives another 300 positive votes, it's then taken out of rotation and placed into the Pageant.
Pageant:
Only 10 different portraits to vote on, again same rules, 300 positive votes, only 1 vote and viewing per client. Winner is taken out of rotation and Crowned 'Babe of New Eden'.
Depending on the amount of views and voting done, I figure this could be done every 3 or 4 days for a new contest, from Qualification to Pageant, so as to have another 10 portraits to vote on at the end of the month. Each 'Babe of New Eden' is taken out of rotation and is placed into this special contest to be held at the end of the month to be Crowned 'Super Babe of New Eden'.
There would be 12 Super Babes, 1 per month, who are all taken out of rotation and placed into another special contest to be held at the end of the year to be Crowned 'Ultra Babe of New Eden'.
Just think of the publicity, could make Calender's, photo spreads, isk, etc.
Awww, who am I kidding?
It's probably just a dumb idea.

Fun site, needs search option and whole ranking listing.
Given the limitations of the char gen currently, it is not surprising to see semi-clones of certain types of faces but every now and then you also find something that is unique, even if it isn`t perfect. Also some people managed to tune lighting so finely that their pictures are just really pleasant to look at.

Some suggestions:
After each vote, change the "wins" and "losses" to "number of votes" and "rank".
Find a way get around the fact that really good looking and really ugly characters have more votes than the average ones that just get the F5 tratment. Maybe set it so the top 10% of the voted people only are avilable in the selection pool 10% of the time and so on?
Also a leaderboard that show the total top 5100 as well as top 10 in each bloodline would be great.

Aside from all the voting/selection options that need to be tweaked I think there's a bevy of beauties on the site already.
Totally off topic, When I take a few minutes (okay hours) out of my day to have a look, I find myself making choices purely based on which of the two Avatars actually looks like a real human and not a plastic head. It's amazing to me the number of players that create their avatars can't actually recognize just how fake their creations look when they hit "finalize". I guess ultimately this is really an art contest. It reminds me of the 5yr old that brings home a "fridge pic" of their family and truly envision their portraits as realistic or the American Idol contestant that believes they can actually sing.

I think the current system is a little faulty. Most of the problems have been mentioned already, but the two problems that stick out the most for me is;
1. Not being able to search for my portrait, or another specific portrait.
and
2. The complete "randomness" of who gets placed up against who. Technically, one person could be placed against really tough competition, and another person could be placed against not-so-tough competition - thereby resulting in more or less votes depending on how "lucky" you are to be placed against certain people. Basically, the current system is just about as much to do with luck as actually being a well-generated character.
Instead, I think you should randomly be given a picture to rate on a scale of 1-10 -once-, that way it is fair for everyone. This would also clean up the apparently "not-so-random" generation of people to vote on. I have seen quite a few people multiple times and there are nearly 4000 portraits entered.
I also find myself randomly clicking through portraits just to see if I get mine for once, so there is that problem too.

Minor request for improvement:
Leave the character name visible after voting by its scores. I prefer *not* to know the name before I judge the beauty, and by the time I'm ready to click... the names are disappearing.
... and +1 for the search function.
As for the randomness - perhaps use a normal distribution based on # of total votes to get new portraits up to speed faster?
Or, perhaps use a matching system to predetermine matchups randomly all at once (split the list in 2, sort each by random, pair them up), and then let every visitor work their way down that list in order. Once you get to the bottom of the list, recreate the random matchup list and work through it again.

Is it just coincidence that I often get similar pictures matched up together? Like maybe same coloured hair, or same hair style, with shades. Or is it that after looking at a few hundred of these things, they all kind of blend together. LOL

This is a fun way to pass the time and from reading here, quite competitive.
As I am competitive myself, I used up 5 spare character slots just to enter a character from each race. It will be interesting to see how they do against each other and the rest of the avatars.
Other than a search function, I think this is fine the way it is.

I'm sure this was said before but I will say it again MAKE IT A 1-10 RATING SYSTEM!!!! The random 2 pics win/lose system doesn't work in the slightest you need average ratings or those at the top will never come down. to stop ballot stuffers just keep the random generator.

Total number of submissions: 4710
Currently competing babes: 3415
...so how do we know if we are competing or if we are only submitted?
This makes it seem even more biased.

Yes, that is a good question. I can only suggest that Helene won her matches against stronger opponents. Hence, her rating is 1790.45 where Ling's is only 1664.37. The thing is, there are loads of hotties in that midfield between 10 and 300, so even a small change in score can jump you a good deal of places. Give it time and you'll see that Ling will have reached similar heights and fallen again.

The 1300-odd that aren't currently in the mix are mostly guys that were submitted or generally hideous avatars that have fallen off the list. Although, as time goes on, we'll hopefully narrow the active babes to around 1000 or so.

You might be able to stabilize the leaderboard a bit by making the babes with the highest percentage of votes overall (negative and positive) get matched up less frequently (and preferably then only with other characters at or near leaderboard rank). Likewise you could make the babes with the least votes over-all enter more matches in order to build up ratios faster and to help weed out obvious troll/unsuitable entries.
It also seems like a "Disqualify Both" or "Neutral" option might be handy in order to prevent people from having to choose between two characters which are both unsuitable.
Love the site, it's a blast. Hope you get a search feature going soon. :) |

I went through 500 clicks and still didn't see myself one fricken time and yet I saw at least 20 others 2 and 3 times or more during that same time. I definitely think it's our pose. Extreme closeups don't fit their pairing algorithym or something.
I'm actually kinda peeved about this now.

I love the new profile pages added. All one has to do is enter their character ID. Mine, for example.
The ranking system seems to heavily favor new entry's. Because if they beat a veteran then their rank sky rockets. I saw a ton of profiles with insane amounts of wins (and not many losses) with like rank #60 but then there would be a rank #15 that had barely any wins at all. And the rank #60 was clearly better than the new babe at rank #15. My own portrait for example sky-rocketed to rank #2 within the first day. But after a couple more days the rank dropped tremendously. And I've noticed the same trend happening with nearly everyone who's entered.
But if you have it designed that way on purpose, then nevermind. Maybe you want the top 20 to be ever changing, I dunno.

Very nice idea but the ranking system is kind of volatile, especially in regards to the win/loss ratio which appears way more stable.
Seems like new characters get one peak in ranking and then level off after that, or keep in a sine-sweep motion.

If i really understood how it is supposed to work a character with a high probability of winning that lose versus one with a low probability of winning will lose alot of ranks with a single vote while the winner will climb faster on the lader.
If this is right his methode to snipe down the leaders seems pretty accurate : vote for good looking toons most of the time and strike ugly face when a leader appear.
Pretty good way to disrupt the game if you ask me, but this is the way of playing EvE for alot of us after all.

Prolly went up against some real losers or guys at the beginning. That would artificially enhance your rank. But as more people voted you are now where you should be in the ranking.

Odds of seeing a particular face once are actually a lot lower than the odds of seeing some random face more than once.

The way the voting is done is flawed, I have seen quite a few portraits keep repeating. This gives them a much higher chance of being a leader with more positive votes.
You should only view 1 portrait at a time shown in 512 size with 2 buttons below it, 'HOT' and 'NOT'. The portrait should have no name or rank listed and should only appear once.
As it is now, the whole system of putting 2 portraits up against each other in a random manner isn't working, some portraits get voted on a lot more than others, also the ranking sys is flawed. How can a portrait that's not even been viewed for 1 day of voting be ranked #1.
Until you come up with a more fair and just system of voting, I personally think it's just a waste of time.

The rating system is far too volatile right now, you can be in the top 10, then #700 a few minutes later, and then bounce around.

2,000 matches (aka 4,000 characters) and still haven't seen any of my 2 characters. I've seen some GUY portraits like 10 times (nevermind the leaderboard ones, "plague" is the go word with them), and yet my 2 submissions didn't show at all despite they're there since Day 1.
And I can't check wether they've got any vote at all, actually. I'm quite upset at my own foolishness for voting so much to get such a poor outcome.
ADIVAH, IMO this doesn't looks like stuff well done, and not even a mile away from being well done.

It is still in beta.
Im sure many features will come out soon. I did the same thing voting hundreds of times and not see my chars once although i've seen leaderboard chars multiple times. i've seen males! i've seen empty portraits. I've voted on the same character many times. This is not fair since some characters are getting voted on many times and other characters have yet to be seen. I know there are thousands of portraits but if you plan on making a 'pageant' out of this then its only fair to be fair.
Also YES someone needs to make a male version of this site!

The way the voting is done is flawed, I have seen quite a few portraits keep repeating. This gives them a much higher chance of being a leader with more positive votes.
You should only view 1 portrait at a time shown in 512 size with 2 buttons below it, 'HOT' and 'NOT'. The portrait should have no name or rank listed and should only appear once.
As it is now, the whole system of putting 2 portraits up against each other in a random manner isn't working, some portraits get voted on a lot more than others, also the ranking sys is flawed. How can a portrait that's not even been viewed for 1 day of voting be ranked #1.
Until you come up with a more fair and just system of voting, I personally think it's just a waste of time.

I don't know how the site works or if there still/was a method to vote over and over for the same matches, someone alluded to that earlier I think, but unless that has been taken care of once and for all you ideas in the linked thread won't mean much.
Otherwise I agree with what you are saying, names shouldn't be shown until after voting if at all on the match screen, perhaps only show it when searched for by name/id# on their 'stat' page.
I've seen several 'known' characters get win/loss ratios that don't 'match' their portraits especially when compared to the near constant visages from the leaderboard that show the depiction of voters 'liked/hot' portraits.
TIP for people your character likely isn't going to do well or make the leaderboard unless it is Asian/Caucasian, fae/sprite/petite/porcelain skin looking 'doll' and doesn't have corn roll/dread/braids which are pretty much universally 'hated' as are dark skinned characters.
One last thing though, the whole venture is AFAIK a waste of time, especially useful for now and then when I'm waiting to jump/in warp/etc. Though I admit voting for the seemingly the same pool of people over and over takes the entertainment/diversion 'fun' factor out of it.

One way to make the ranking a bit less spasmic would be to do it similar to the good old bubble sort algorithm:
The two portraits compared are ranked next to each other, if the lower ranked ones win they change places, if the higher one wins nothing happens. If you vote neither then the one ranked below both will be moved up.
You can still use the randomizer to pick which pair is compared but it won't have as much effect as it does now. Also new entrants should end up in the middle of the list and not start from the bottom.
The only drawback with this is that it can take a while for new stunning entries to reach the top, but why should they end up there in only 10 lucky votes to start with?

Please, can we ditch this pretentious ELO based leaderboard. In this context, it is just utter nonsense masquerading as pseudo science. "Beauty" is subjective, not objective, it is certainly not a skill or talent and cannot be contrived into any legitimate formula, let alone a ranking system. It may be less "attractive" to use a raw win/loss ratio but at least it's simple and clearly understandable to all.
So, please dump the ELO tosh, restore the fuglies, heck keep the men and everyone voting, try to be a bit more open about "beauty". My personal favs were "Yo Mama" and "Warp to 0" which I'm assuming have now been purged as part of the anti-fugly pogrom.

While its true that people have quirks and preferences that are not all similar, there are certain basic preferences that can be expressed in math, that we are born with and that are quantifiable.

Comparing A against B is about one thing, personal preference. It's not maths or science, it's historical, regional, racial or any other number of arbitary factors that determine why You pick A over B. Doesn't mean I or anyone else should or would, or that there is any conclusion that can be drawn from it, other than You chose A and I may have chosen B. Neither does it imply that given the same circumstance or even a similar one, we make the same choices. So any kind of ranking system that tries to generate fantasy relationships and draw inferences is barking up the wrong tree. The raw figures tell one story, this "ELO" method imposes another and it's couterproductive, confusing and prone to endless chaotic swings.

The US military had an AI package built to spot tanks. In trials it worked flawlessly. When it came to spotting tanks in the field it failed miserably. The reason, all the trial pictures were of tanks in woods. The system liked trees, not tanks.

2,000 clicks = 4,000 characters, 2 characters in, never have seen none of mine. Never mind there where only 1,400 character when I posted mine. Very "random" it is, yes. And I am the most unfortunate guy in the game, too.
OTOH, if iy is truely random, then it means any character entering now has got only 1 chance in 4,000 to score each time a user queries the web... I would call that "to die from its own success", simply the would be too many contenders to even try to unless they where split into cathegories and user had to pick one from each cathegory...
One match with people whose total matches was lower than 10% the total characters; another with people whose total matches where les than 20% of total characters; an this way up an up until the final match, able to enter leaderboard, was between people whose total matches were 100% of the total characters. (I.e., say there are 4,000 characters, then user should pick between two characters with less than 40 matches, another pick between two chars with less than 200 matches, another from the cathegory with less than 400 matches, et cetera, and leaderboard would be drawn from people who had at least 4,000 matches).

1-10 scale would be too easily manipulated I think. I like the way it is now - It's random, but once you get 1000+ votes it should paint a pretty accurate picture.

During U.S. prime time you will see the boobie skanks find their way onto the leader board and during EU prime you are more likely to see the actual babes being voted in.

LOL. Fun site. I think it is not possible to enter with a posed mug shot. You will need a direct shot of the face to get accurate readings. With my forum potrait, I get 7.96 out of 10.
* My face has poor horizontal symmetry. (maybe because of the pose)
* My nose is too long for my ears. (maybe because I made guess work on the ears with all the hair there.
* Compare to the eye width, the innerocular is nearly ideal.
* Nose is too narrow for your face width.
* Face is too wide/too short.
* Mouth is too wide for your nose.
I am quite surprise at the good score despite the bad comments.

Yea, I agree. I've changed the calculation (K-factor) to be far less volatile. That's one of the reasons I introduced the max-rank / current rank thing. I wanted to see how much the leaders were moving around. I think this is mostly because voters have different tastes, so it keeps shifting, but it was shifting a bit much. I think you can safely say, though, that if you made it in the top 20 at any stage: you're a babe ;)

Adivah, I just suggested this through feedback: in order to pick out dudes, uglies and void avatars, you may just let people vote for the admission of new contenders. Show a row of them and ask: "You want this babe to enter? Yes/No" "Yes" would mean nothing, but gathering 10 (or 20 or 50) noes= it stays out, with a chance to appeal to the webmasters just in case a real babe was being boycotted by an endless row of jokers ().

Actually a combination of everything I had posted here will work. I doubt there is any other way to make a fair rating or voting other than to view each portrait once all by itself and vote either 'HOT' or 'NOT' per client. Plain and simple. After a specific amount of positive votes, that character get's removed from qualification phase and placed into semi finals, and so on and so on.

I'm looking at highest rank attained, not current rank.
My avatar is not ugly but shes not what you would call traditionally beautiful, and shes somewhat androgenous and dark. Her highest rank is 166 which is what I'd expect.
The avatar I linked is very feminine, colors are bright, pose is playful and pupils are very dilated (bedroom eyes), thats very much what males are thought to be attracted too and her highest rank is #4. Also what you would expect.

K Rho's chin might by a bit pointy but overall the facial features are pretty close to her( <- miss puerto rico 2009) while the nose suggests some Creole ancestry as well.
So could you point the white girl features out with a huge red arrow? Because your comment seriously leaves me at a loss.

I believe I have noticed a difference, Adivah.
On top of my own five entrants, I have selected a few hotties and a few fuglies to track. They are still jumping around quite a bit, but not by as much as before. The trend now seems to be a slow and steady move as opposed to a 400 place jump.
The leaders are staying longer on the board, but the hot new entrants are able to make a steady climb to bump them.
All in all a good decision on your part to make this change.

I got to #9 on my first day, then was #1000 next day, then got back to #12 the day after and then returned to about #800 ish
It looks as though the ranking is based off your recent win/loss ratio rather than overall, so if you get a streak of wins or losses your ranking jumps about wildly.

I find it funny how CCP first made everyone roll asian chicks (achura, khanid) for awesome attributes and then made everyone struggle widening their eyes in a new character creator.

IMHO there should be a quick way to access to your character... instead of needing the ID.
Ofcourse there shouldnt be a way to rate a char directly (downvoting sucks)

My OTHER character's avatar was entered and - strangely - never even once voted on. Instead, looking up her ID, I'm told that she was no longer running. While I can see her feeling upset about being entered, I as a player have not retracted her participation in any way. What should I do?
Some feedback on your beta:
- Not sure if the elo system is the way to go. In chess, this system is used to a) reduce the problem that players purposely choosing only weaker opponents will have an unfair advantage and b) maximize the relevant information from a relatively small number of matches that are actually played. Neither applies here, since you can work with a huge number of completely randomized matches.
So I suggest you simply use a win/lose ratio, rank players only after a certain amount of matches and - maybe - tune the chances carefully toward a higher likelyhood of avatars competing against those of a similar ranking.
- Make very sure the system cannot be "gamed". EVE players are a shrewd and dedicated (sometimes both, even) bunch and, they'll try. Therefore, a "hot or not" or rating system will not work well.
- Do not give in to people asking for a "both are ugly" function. They will abuse that. Maybe a "skip" option, but I could think of a problem there, too.
- You might consider requiring a login for voters, maybe even needing an existant player character as a handle, in order to avoid botting.

ELO is very much precisely what you DO NOT want to use for something like this. Bayesian estimates or weighted averages are far far superior.

To Adivah (and anyone else who works on Eves of Babe website):
People are getting tired of voting for the same portraits over and over. This makes the 'real' votes jaded for portraits that have been up for a while.
You seriously need to induct some sort of "Hall of Fame".
For example, once a Character has "x" amount of total votes, for example, 1000 or 2000 total, then the profile is permanently frozen. (and no longer voted on but still viewable). Maybe even store the profiles that have achieved rank 1-20 in a special place one day.
This way the portraits voted on stay fresh and the older portraits don't receive jaded results.
I have already voted on the same portraits many times, sometimes several times. And I'll admit it does change my answer in a way in some cases because I've already "voted" for that portrait so many times, I got tired of it.
Now that my idea is done with, it's time for Praise.
Awesome website! Really is brilliant and fun. Props to the work put into it and to keep it up and running.
One other thing- my girlfriend is demanding you guys make a sister website like "Hunks of New Eden", or something along those lines (for male characters). She's made a lot of stunningly handsome males that she really wants rated.

Yeah, I don't really understand how the portraits get shuffled for viewing. I do know that this is a very bad record, don't understand why.
My Record?
I know I'm not a dog and I look very lifelike, especially when compared to some of the other so-called babes on this site, even a couple of the leaders.
It shows I'm ranked at #5994 and one of the close contenders is a Male portrait. WTH? I guess I'm no longer competing since the voting page states - Currently competing babes: #4535
If I am still competing, just exactly how do the stats figure in? How many times does my portrait get shown or voted on? Maybe everyone's stats/record should be erased and start fresh with a new competition.
If I'm no longer competing, then I'd like to have my character portrait and bio/record removed from the site.

Well, i spent almost 3 days voting while bored or warping. My chars are still not "approved", great...just great. And on account on shuffling, i had 3-4 same chars come up for voting in a few minutes. So i guess randomness is strange, or too much of a coincidence.

By the way, it seems that a lot of people are voting constantly just to get to their character by chance, you don't need to do that. Just use the API to get the id using the character's name, so to get my character I just loaded page :

M'lord, I might suggest a reason for this interesting finding of yours.
Anime is a pop culture phenomenon at this time. The imagery is pretty much everywhere you look. Perhaps that is the reason why, subconsciously perhaps, that people are attracted to the avatars displaying these traits. If this were the mid-sixties you might find the avatars depicting chubby unshaven hippie chicks more prevalent on the leader board. But it's the '10s now and Anime is the popular thing.
