Having played in a corporation with a few people I later find out to be of an age group I would not normally stereotype as being gamers (mid fifties) I was curious who the oldest player in EVE is. So shout out and be heard those of you who are bitter vets at life.

Well that generation you speak of (guys in their 40s-50s-60s-70s) created video games/computers/Internet/tech and well everything else you geeks like. You know like Star Wars, Star Trek, books, comics, cars etc, etc, etc.. all the endless crap you love.
Why would they not be into games and technology now?
This aint the 1950's 1960's anymore :) Get with the times
Every generation stands on the shoulders of their elders and everything they did which was a hell of alot. We are screwed now days though cause kids/teens are useless, fat and dumb as hell :)

There was a thread in Out of Pod a year or so back asking older players to introduce themselves. One or two were into their 70's. Scifi has been around for some time, E.E. Doc Smith was writing stories that predated Star Trek and Star Wars by 30 to 40 years and bore some resemblance to both in certain ways. I'm 42 so in the younger range of the 'older player' but people in their 50's+ are playing all kinds of games and highly involved in online communities.

I know a woman in her 60s (65)
She has a G15 keyboard a cyborg gaming mouse and is a total stoner XD
She's like the grandma I never had ^^ (As my dad's mom passed before I was born)
'cept you can expect her to have a few joints in her purse instead of candies lol
One thing though that throws ppl off is that she has a voice like she's 30 years younger hehe

I've played with people in their 50's and 60'. Gamers older than that have a tendency to play flight and train simulators instead of MMO's.

my apple IIe came out way before that...
but my first programming was done on an APL remote terminal attached to a suction-cup telephone accoustic modem, and the mainframe charged you $ per minute.
(and my second programming experience was on punch cards, i guess i slipped back in time lol )

I remember my year being the first year in our school to have anything to do with computers at all.
We went on a day trip to Dundee (I think it was) on a bus, to the university there, where we gawped at the room-sized computer, on which we learned to do basic arithmetic operations in Fortran with punch cards
So 52.
Funnily enough, though, I didn't get into videogames until Doom. I guess my imagination wasn't good enough to get any fun out of game graphics before that! *****

Being in my early 30s ... I just realized I'm pretty run of the mill in EVE, age-wise. While I was called old by my guildmates in WoW (when I played it).
so while it is amazing that a 70 year old person plays EVE... wouldn't it be more significant to find a 12-16 year old succeeding at EVE?

Well IÆm an OAP and my first æcomputerÆ ran on transistors, my next used AND, OR, NOT and NAND gates and was designed with a slide rule lol.
I then ægraduatedÆ via a UK101, Various Sinclair models, Atari ST, an Amstrad PC (running GEM) an Amstrad running CP/M and finally my first PC. I started programming/playing simple games on the UK101 and many, many years later having spent around 35 years designing, building and repairing computers I am still hooked on PC games.
IÆm an avid Lara Croft fan having bought my son a Playstation 1 and the game just so I could play the first version and bought every game since.

I am so happy to have found this thread. I thought that I was alone in my "Peter Pan" syndrome. Guys like me in their late 50's seem to have more restrained interests, like mowing the grass, walking the dog or just playing lawn bowls. Commodore 128D with some of the first floppy discs were a God send for us. After waiting half an hour on the C64 for the tape to load and then finding it had an error was frustrating to say the least.

Perhaps something CCP could put in their statistics. The number of subscriptions per agegroup, the only problem is however is the number of subscriptions. I don't see many 12 to 18 years old having multiple accounts as the parents probably don't want to pay for a second one. And it is pretty hard for CCP to discover multiple accounts for one user if they use plex to pay and have a different email on the account.
But I guess I'm around the avg of the eve-player: early 30. ---------------------------------- None of yet! |

I feel better after reading this thread, I hit the big five-0 this year and I thought I was freaking ancient. Now IÆm feeling kind of young. My first real world experience with computers took place probably somewhere around 86. My first work computer was with a 386 that I used to run DOS based heat load analysis programs on. Eventually I moved up to a Commodore 486 with a turbo-button and was able to actually run AutoCad version 11 or 12 if I remember correctly. That was a real treat back then, lol.

My parents were cheap, so instead of the C64, I ended up with the Vic20. 5K of RAM and until I got a cassette drive, I had to leave it on so I wouldn't lose the program I spent all day typing in from a computer magazine... good times? um... no. I'm definitely thankful for the new stuff. I keep wondering how fast and small things will get before I die. Faster! Smaller! Let's go! Let's go! Hurry up!! |

Extasy computer was my first, at school. Command line interpreter..
Our first computer at home was a VIC20, soon replaced by the C64 when it came out. Played Wingcommander series on my very own PC (Armstrad with a amazing 10Mbyte hardcard on it), then online Descent. When DeltaForce2 came out I started a clan ('99) which still exists and have 2 meetings a year in the UK. (I'm 46).
Our CEO is 58.

The personal computer began hitting it's stride in 1980. That was 31 years ago. Someone in their 60s now would have been one of the 'pioneers'. So how is it strange that someone who is 'old' would be playing an MMO? BTW, this is the 1 billionth time this thread has been done.

You laugh now, but this violent video game is warping their minds. You'll get a call one day, from the teachers at your kids' school... "Hello, Mr. Defined, I'd like you to come pick up your kids. Yes, they ganked a couple of the other kids. No, no ransom. No, it wasn't a suicide gank. They just pwned them near the bathroom gate. I'm afraid we'll have to set them as outlaws, you'll have to come get them."

It always pained be growing up that my stepdad had the imagination of, well, a rock. Anything at all with a hint of sci-fi, fantasy, you name it was disregarded. Would look, watch, nothing. Now he's a grumpy old bastard who looks like he never really enjoyed life.
I take pride that my kids see me as someone to play with instead of someone to avoid when they want to have fun.
Ah, old computers... I remember my old C64, but what really stands out was my old 8088 with it's massive 20Meg hard drive. No, the 20Meg isn't massive, but the hard drive was. Thing weighed like 10 pounds and practically needed a deisel engine to get it spinning. Sounded like it at least...

Tip for the young people: Think about everything you've seen and done and learned in all the years you've been alive. Now, take that old person's age and divide it by your own.
Now realize that's how many of your lifetimes that that old person has been around.
Moral of the story: Never turn your back on an old person.
