I'm super-impressed with the quality of both of these sites, by the way. So please, no personal aspersions about whether or not I have better things to do with my time. ;) In fact, I do, but I started mucking around with this idea just to refresh my knowledge of PHP and mysql and I got a little bit carried away with it, so I'll just post up a link to the site and you can take or leave it. EVE Online Avatar Face-Off Though the frenzy about rating avatars has died down compared with where it was a couple of weeks ago, I still think this site has a little something to offer that perhaps you haven't seen on other avatar match-up sites. Primarily, it offers players the ability to make judgments upon avatars based upon a set of attributes, such as intimidation, creepiness, heroism, and so forth. Avatars aren't assigned any sort of absolute rating about which is the best, and there really aren't any winners and losers. In fact, even the results pages for the attributes only presents a random assortment of characters with ratings greater than 50%. I did this site purely for the fun of it and to celebrate a really cool character creator tool. If anybody ever uses it and once I get it refined a little, I'll submit it to CCP as a fansite. Anyway, I hope somebody gets some enjoyment from it. Oh, one last thing: there are two versions of the game. Standard Deck. All avatars are fair game for any question. It's totally random. Stacked Deck. You're only going to see avatars that have a positive rating in the attribute asked about in the question.

So it's sort of a compliment. :) I'm happy to remove anybody's avatars if they'd prefer not to be in there. I'd have to do it as a black list, though, since I can't really stop players from submitting avatars they don't own. Also, thanks for the kind words, Tressin.

Thanks to everybody who has been playing. Somewhat astoundingly (maybe even unbelievably), players have made a selection upon almost 19,000 face-offs. No idea how many of those are legit and how many are just people clicking in time to music, but it's impressive to me, anyway (though I'm kind of vexed that people keep voting down my own avatars! ;)) I've done a few tweaks here and there to make results a little more meaningful. Something I just pushed live was an update to the face-off script to weight more recently added avatars in order to ramp up the vote totals for fresh faces. I'm happy to take any other improvement recommendations. Given even the meager amount of data that can be culled from the API, it's still possible to generate some interesting stats. For example, the most attractive race? Caldari. Ugliest race? Amarr.

A suggestion for an alternative mechanism, place one image but then put 3/4 random words that equate with your asix below, were voters choose just one that sums up the character. e.g. Attractive/Ugly Dramatic/Mundane Realistic/Unreal Professional/Amateur Good/Evil Friendly/Intimidating. Heroic/Anti-Hero Bold/Modest

Sorry--this is what happens when you try to slap together a database-driven website in a few days while also working a full-time job and taking care of a 4-month old daughter. This is also why I keep backing up my database. That probably should be fixed. I actually was handling the apostrophes, I just wasn't handling the slashes.

I might have been over-weighting newer entries. I've also done another small change to ameliorate this problem (fixed something I had done in a lazy way originally). I think you should see more variety now. I apologize in advance to anybody who encounters a bug. Hopefully, they only last a minute, because of some stupid on-the-fly update I've done, but undoubtedly, there are some kinks that still need to be worked out.
