So I got to poking around with the new forum deal and the first thing that struck me was the 'like' button. I have lurked around forums with features like this and CCP is heading down the hershey highway. Thats right. Forums with features like this turn into narcisistic circle-jerking yaywagons and drive level headed ppl away in revulsion at the thought of jumping in the yaypile.
This is already a natural tendancy of the internets and encouraging it and bringing it to eve is a bad idea.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of ccp's facebookish social networking-online aspirations and while its great business sense to suck ppl in and continue to further blur the lines of RL and drive to integrate a product into ppl's day-to-day RL routines I though eve was different.
It's already involving enough. Forget GBTWOW, EVE devs need to GBTFACEBOOK with their evil coniverings.

The "like" thing is one of the things I dislike the least about the new forums. Way to pick an inconsequential detail out of all the seriously screwed up mess that is the new forum experience. Also, this is EVE. I expect people to grant "likes" as much ironically as seriously, to the point where it will become meaningless and CCP might decide to simply remove it. Or not. Most people will probably ignore it anyway. _

How is the behavior you describe, TipsyMcStagger, worse than the rampant trolling that already exists? _____________________________

As compared to what? The incredibly high standard of discussion that takes place on the current forums? Face it, the primary sport on the EVE forums is to see who can be the fastest to type a snarky reply to every single new thread, regardless of its relative merits. I really wish that wasn't the case, but it is and it's not likely to change because of a new button or two.
The new forums have some issues that need to be worked out, but the 'like' button isn't one of them.

At least now ppl r mostly anonymous and the occasional time some narci-wallower links a photo etc. and you mouse over and instead of linking to tinypic etc its on their blog and you have a chance to move on b4 having to go shower their mental love-juice off imagine that kinda stuff which is on the periphreal being the focus, not just forums, but ingame eventually.
And I picked out the 'like' button as a 'tl;dr; one small symptom, evidence of much more to come plus I havent investigated further yet I already know what theyr up too.
Eve-facebook-online. Its coming.

An idiotic gripe and a stupid reason to boycott a forum that represents a hundred fold improvement over the 1990s rollover fossil we're typing on now.
Some people whine about the lamest crap.

Whew! Thought for a second my forum whoring life would meet a major change.
So what if you get a ridiculous little ticker? Just makes identifying obvious/frequent trolls that much easier.

While I like the "like" button as a new way to grief people, I really am so passionately against CCP's spacebook crap. Seriously, if you're gonna give people a way to connect to eachother more easily in an MMO, make it not ****. Make it a tool to connect, not a crippling bleeding wound, infected and gangrenous and an evolutionary deadend. Give us an option of a full 100% opt out that you actually respect instead of resetting whenever you feel like, and divorce "friends" from "standings." Those 2 changes will make it not ****, but it still needs a metric buttload of work before it's, well, not **** that's mostly ignored.

You dont want CCP to turn the forum into Faceforum? why? are you one of these people with only 5 friends on Facebook thats why you dont like it? Ive got like 100000 million friends and 50000 pictures taken of myself in a mirror!
Adding or removing a "Like" button will not change how people respond or act on forums. If you want people to act in a certain way, your better of writing your own "Self help...The foum experience" book.
The eve forums has a certain character about it, like most forums ive been on, and you will ALWAYS get the trolls, the flamers, the idiots......Facebook is one of, if not the most popular things to "do" online atm and i don't blame CCP for trying to incorporate a facebook type feel into the community.

This is about as idiotic as telling a policeman that you pay his salary.

I'm talking to idiots most of the time; I have to use their language. Besides, it was very short and convenient to put it like that. I'm quite sure you understood what I was trying to say.. accomplished with minimal typing!

I hate peoples that doesn't want changes in EVE. No changes makes EVE really boring and many will just leave because of boredom.

Nah, because the two give rise to drastically different behaviour.
Dislike buttons bring out the "one-star monkeys", that vote down anyone and everyone they dislike regardless of the topic and the post. Like buttons bring out the fanclubs and alt-clouds, that stroke epeens for various reasons. Having one or the other depends entirely which party you want to see more of.
The problem is that, those two groups aside, neither button serve much purpose unless it's clear what posts they're in relation to. They become methods to vote for the person, not the idea, which is just icky in many new and interesting ways. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Because Windows ME was better than 98SE, and Vista was better than XP, right?
Not everything new is better than what it replaces. I haven't used the new forums but the fact that they require HTTPS and don't work on the IGB for me is a step in the wrong direction.
